The Skeleton Council Poem

Analytical Essay The Skeleton Council by Katherine Leyton
The Skelton Council by Katherine Leyton was published in Volume 36 No. 4 of Contemporary Verse 2
during the spring of 2014. The poem opens on a house inhabited by a woman and a group of skeletons
that meet every evening for examination. One night, the woman blinks and sees a doppelganger of
herself in an empty room. The Skeleton Council by Katherine Leyton uses symbolism, imagery, and
style to express the oppressive nature of family secrets and their distortive and obsessive effects on the
narrator.
In The Skeleton Council, Leyton uses the skeletons as a symbol for the family secrets that plague the
narrator. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first half of the poem is comprised of a more complex syntax than the second half. The sentences
in the first half are longer, averaging 3 lines each and use a more descriptive diction with words such
as anxious (line 3), encouraging (line 5), and sideboards (line 2). This heavier style brings forward an
oppressive element as the meaning is trapped behind dense language. In the second half, the style
becomes more simplistic with sentences averaging 1 2 lines and word choice becoming more concise.
This change in style clearly presents the meaning in the second half taking away the oppressive
atmosphere and reinforcing the distortion of the narrators feelings.
In The Skeleton Council by Katherine Leyton, the symbolism of skeletons as well as the juxtaposition
that imagery and style form with the narrator s feelings are utilized throughout the poem. These
elements help to express the oppressive nature of un earthed secrets in the narrator s life and the
distortive and obsessive effects they have on

The Hunger Games By Suzanne Collins
In the Hunger Games , citizens in thirteen districts are subordinates to the citizens of the capital. These
subordinates were forced to work for the capital and were given no mercy there were public beatings
for crimes and even their kids were killed on a comical television show for the capital citizens. These
ideas, which Suzanne Collins used in her book, can be traced to our own past. Similar to the forced
labor and abuse the Capital imposed on the district members in the Hunger Games , blacks in early
United States were treated very poorly. Ironically, many people living in the United States after the
Revolutionary War were still oppressed, slavery still existed, and discrimination was prevalent.
Slavery did get banned in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The registration and bond were irregularly enforced. Many blacks got away with not registering,
however, a rapid increase of blacks caused an enforcement of the regulation. This enforcement,
resulted in over a thousand free blacks fleeing the state to Canada or other states. Blacks in Ohio were
also limited politically. They could not vote, hold office, or testify in court. In 1860, the regulation on
voting was modified some, yet only mulattoes were given the right to vote. Blacks also could not
enlist in the state militia. Socially, blacks were also at a disadvantage in Ohio. Whites did not want to
associate with blacks in the state. When a plan had been made to settle around 500 ex slaves from
Virginia in Ohio, they threatened armed attack (Horton et Horton 107). Discrimination was a daily
occurrence for blacks, particularly in southern Ohio, near the Ohio River, which acted as a border
between slavery and non slavery land. Free blacks were limited in regard to which jobs they could
have. No free black could work unless they had a valid license and they were generally offered the
worst jobs available. At Cincinnati s riverfront, men gathered each day in search of jobs (Horton and
Horton 110). The blacks were typically, only given the least desirable jobs available (Horton and
Horton 110). These jobs were temporary and were

Carrier Mediated Transport
The body can be described as a series of interconnected compartments. Cell membranes are the
barriers among the different compartments. In order for drugs to gain access to the cells, they must
move between the different compartments, more importantly cell membranes, after being
administered. The two most important methods for dealing will cell membrane travel are diffusion
through lipid and carrier mediated transport.
Diffusion through lipid is when non polar molecules can dissolve easily in membrane lipids and thus
diffuse readily across the cell membrane without any assistance. The rate at which a molecule diffuses
strongly depends on it s molecular size; smaller molecules diffuse at a more rapid rate than larger
ones. A drug s lipid solubility is the main determining factor for it s rate of diffusion transfer. ... Show

This type of transport can be divided into two sub groups: solute carrier (SLC) transporters and ATP
binding cassette (ABC) transporters. SLC transporters move solutes passively down their
electrochemical gradient. Uniports are used in this case to carry one molecule at a time across the
membrane. This sub group can be further divided into organic cation transporters (OCT) and organic
anion transporters (OAT). ABC transporters transfer molecules through the membrane through active
pumps fueled by ATP. This is done in order to go against the electrochemical gradient. Antiport,
transport of two molecules together in the opposite direction, and symport, transport of two molecules
together in the same direction, are used coupled with Na+ or other

The Effects Of Television On Our Life
Everything has positive and negative outlooks. Televisions don t have to be a negative thing. Some
believe that watching television is negative and cannot be influencing to others, but some may seem to
believe that you can learn a few thing from watching TV. But watching television can perhaps have a
positive impact in your life. Television can enhance the different ways you tend to see things, it can be
an informative way of learning, and can also be a soul searching moment of inspiration.
Watching TV can be a positive act in your day to day life. You may believe that TV cannot be a
positive act in your in life, but when watching certain television shows you learn different life lessons.
Shows like the educational channels, history channels, and other related channels are great shows to
watch. It helps you build up you social and learning skills, and can make you look at things as well as
life a little differently now that you have watched it from a different aspect. You can learn a lot from
watching these particular kinds of shows, because when you see how it is being done and how others
do it on the television, its gives you that mind set that you want to go out and experience it a different
way, instead of the way you usually have done it. For example, I knew somebody who talked about
having a child at a young age. We were at her house one day and we were watching this television

Buck And White Fang Comparison
A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself. (Josh Billings) This is
certainly true of two famous dogs in American literature: Buck and White Fang, who have a lot of
similarities, but many differences.
In the beginning of their stories, both Buck and White Fang are similar but also different. First, both
get kidnapped and made into sled dogs. For example, Buck gets kidnapped by Manuel and sold to be a
sled dog and White Fang gets trapped by Gray Beaver and becomes a sled dog. Since, both dogs
become sled dogs, this is a similarity they share. Second, White Fang and Buck are both mixed breeds.
For instance, Buck is half Saint Bernard and half Scotch Shepherd, White Fang is half Husky and half
Wolf. Since ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, both dogs are rescued from near death experiences. For example, Buck is saved by John
Thornton when he is almost beaten to death by his owner; White Fang is saved by Jack Conroy when
he is almost killed from a dog fight. Since, they were both saved from being killed they are the same.
Second, they are also different because they fall in love with their new owners at different times after
being saved. For instance Buck is saved by John Thornton and instantly falls in love with him, But
White Fang is hesitant of Jack Conroy when he saves him, and it takes him a little longer to fall in
love with Jack. Since, Buck and White Fang fell in love with the person that saved them at different
times, Last, White Fang and Buck are also the same because both dogs saved their good owners. For
example, when Jack s gold mine caved in and he was buried with rocks, White Fang saves him by
moving the rocks off of him; and when John Thornton is drowning Buck saves him by pulling him out
of the water. Since they both did a heroic thing and saved their masters they are the same in this ways.
In conclusion, at the end of their stories, Buck and White Fang are the same but also different in many

What goods and services does a government want to provide? To what extent does it believe in
subsidizing firms? What are its priorities in terms of business support? Political decisions can impact
on many vital areas for business such as the education of the workforce, the health of the nation and
the quality of the infrastructure of the economy such as the road and rail system. * Economic Factors
These include interest rates, taxation changes, economic growth, inflation and exchange rates. As it
can be seen throughout the Foundations of Economics book economic change can have a major
impact on a firm s behavior. For examples, * higher interest rates may deter investment because it
costs more to borrow * a strong currency may make exporting more difficult because it may raise the
price in terms of foreign currency * inflation may provoke higher wage demands from employees and
raise cost * national income growth may boost demand for a firm s products
* Social Factors
Changes in social trends can impact on the demand for a firm s products and the availability and
willingness of individuals to work. In the UK, for example, the population has been ageing. This has
increased the costs for firms who are committed to pension payments for their employees because
their staff is living longer.
It also means some firms such as Asda have started to recruit older employees to tap into this growing
labor pool. The

Reasons And Results Of The Civil War
Reasons and Results of the Civil War
The Civil War was a very critical event in American History. It started by many disagreements
between the North and the South. For blacks as for other Americans, the Civil War was a strong voice
preaching the needs for devotion and allegiance to form a justified nation. After the war ended there
were many results that would forever linger throughout America and the world. The South was known
as the Confederate States of America, seceded from the North, which was known as the Union. The
seceding of the South was because of four decades of intense sectional differences and conflicts
between both South and North. The secession of the Southern states was not an instinctive act.
Situations ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On the other hand the South wanted to withhold all undetermined powers to the individual states and
to withhold all these projects. The predominant issue why the South seceded was the slavery issue.
The South wanted and called for slavery and would do anything they could to keep it. Cold heartedly
the slaves were items and if taken away would put a huge dent in investments towards Southerners.
The value to the slaveholding planter class was immeasurable. Northerners demanded for collective
bargaining to develop goals such as free education, better salaries and working conditions for workers,
and better rights for woman. Northerners said that slavery revoked the rights of a human to be a free
person. The subject of slavery left, and the North headed for war and eventually defeated the South in
the Civil War. Without this war I sorely would have to say that we could have been in a much more
segregated society than we already are. This war was needed in order to produce a stronger and more
stable country for everyone.
Slavery was abolished in the Union during Abraham Lincoln s presidency. Lincoln called it
Emancipation Proclamation. This movement was definitely a day of awakening for America as a
whole, which finally realized what free meant. All the Southern states would soon rejoin the Union.
After the war concluded

Character Analysis Of Nora Helmer In A Doll s House
Character Analysis of Nora Helmer in A Doll s House Imagine a world where Susan B. Anthony did
not right for a woman s right to vote or Katharine Hepburn did not defy Hollywood s ideal view of the
traditional female movie star. Women have not always been given such a voice or granted such a place
in marriage and society as they have today. In large part, the level of equality men and women share in
the present time is due to the bold and brave feminist literature writers of the nineteenth century. One
such writer being Henrik Isben who, in 1879, wrote his play A Doll s House. A Doll s House centers
around the character of Nora Helmer, wife to a wealthy, domineering husband, Torvald. As a
nineteenth century wife, Nora was conflicted throughout the play with the male chauvinistic view of a
woman s role in marriage and society and her own aspirations of self identity. In Act I of A Doll s
House, Isben introduced Nora to the audience through the viewpoint of how society thought of women
during that time childlike, uneducated, dependent, and submissive. The first act of the play starts off
when Nora had returned home from Christmas shopping, and Torvald was in the study. Singing and
giddy, Nora was excited for the Christmas festivities ahead for her husband and children. She snuck
macaroons from her pocket and ate them quickly and secretively, like a child sneaking a cookie before
dinner. Nora asked Torvald to come out of the study to see what she had bought. Several times

The Myth Of Romantic Love
Countless people in our society, today, endure the myth of romantic love. Through this myth,
numerous adults do not distinguish the true meaning of love. The Myth of Romantic Love, a chapter
from The Road Less Traveled by Dr. Scott Peck, bestows information concerning the impact and
suffering the myth of romantic love has brought onto humanity. According to the author, we cannot
comprehend what happens when we fall in love. The author believes it is our genetics that causes us to
fall in love. He also supports the fact that fairy tales, romantic comedy, and popular music, all
influence adults to believe romantic love exists. The author postulates that through society we are
influenced to believe romantic love exists and we each obtain a soul mate who will be perfect for ...

In other words, if one person has a positive attitude towards others, her husband would probably also
have a positive attitude towards others. I have noticed that people who acquire marriage often have a
few things in common, like personality. If, unfortunately, your soul mate does leave or die, do not
despair; there are many people in the world who share your personalities and interests, so you just
need to spend some time to find him or her. In addition, if your soul mate does leave it just means he
or she is not meant for you or was not really your soul mate. In conclusion, despite the fact that
marriage may be a life changing decision, it all comes down to actually knowing if your husband or
wife absolutely loves you and you love them back. As I have stated previously love isn t a lie, though
it may be difficult to achieve. Though many people today are influenced by romantic love, through our
words and our ability as humans to understand one another, someday the human race may not need to
be influenced by the myth of romantic

Reservation System
The drafters of the Indian constitution visualized that a major chunk of population, because of living
in remote areas, might remain devoid of benefits that would be available to other citizens of free India.
To neutralize this handicap they introduced reservations in education and

remote locations. And they believed that in due course of time the backward classes would be propped
up to a level that equals the others.
Some strange reawakening prompted the Janta Party government under Bharat Ratna Morarji
Desai to enlarge the span of reservations. Mandal commission was established in India in 1979 with a
mandate to identify the socially or educationally backward, based on additional parameters. The
commission brought in 11 socio economic and educational indicators to determine backwardness and
introduced the term Other Backward Classes (OBC) , as a yet another class distinction in the country.

Bear Hunt Illustration
The children s book We re Going on a Bear Hunt utilises the switching between black and white
illustrations and full colour effectively. The pages of the story that are in black and white occur when
the family meet an obstacle, such as long wavy grass , and once they have overcome said obstacle the
illustration returns to colour. It repeats in this manner throughout the picture books entirety. In doing
this, the illustrator has emphasised the texts gloominess and foreboding of what the family will have to
do ( we have to go through it ).
The way this text has been structured by combining the aperture, exposition and inciting moment. The
first sentence We re going on a bear hunt tells the reader what the story is going to entail whilst giving
away what future conflict they could be if the family were to find a bear. The exposition is also viewed
here as the reader, with the illustrations help, knows that we (the family) are who is involved and it is
a beautiful day in the country. Conflict rises steadily on every second page revealing a new hurdle the
family has to conquer (mud, lake etc) but is resolved immediately until the climax when the big bear is

Analysis Of Upon The Breeze She Spread Her Golden Hair
Upon the Breeze she spread her Golden Hair by Franscesco Petrach Franscesco Petrach sonnet Upon
the Breeze she Spread her Golden Hair is a love poem in which the persona describes his love feelings
about the subject, Laura. However, he laments that while his love for her is everlasting, it only results
in pain because the feeling is not mutual thus not reciprocated by Laura. In fact, the structure and style
of the poem help in conveying his message. Petrach uses metre, rhyme, and alliteration to impart the
feeling of euphony in the audience regarding the poem. Nonetheless, there are few instances in which
he deviates from the set structure, which mirrors real life situations and the love experience he
describes as imperfect. First, the poet uses metre, a style that emphasizes the use of a specific
structure, which is an appropriate way of presenting poems with positive themes such as love. In this
case, the poet achieves metre through the use of a uniform number of syllables in every line of the first
stanza (10 syllables per line). This approach not only makes the poem memorable in recitation and
listening but also relaxes the listener which is important in understanding the subject matter. Petrach
uses a qualitative metre, which concentrates on the use of uniform syllabic arrangement. As a result,
he creates an aesthetic euphony thus making the listener and the reciter to enjoy the presentation of the
poem. The technique is appropriate in the presentation of a love sonnet. Equally, the first two stanzas
have four lines each, but the last two stanzas have three lines each. This aspect aligns with the two
perspectives presented in the poem, the first being his great affection for Laura, and the second is an
expression of the pain he experiences as a result of the unreciprocated love. Furthermore, he has been
unable to express his feelings to her, which compounds his pain evident in the words I had love s
tinder in my breast unburned, was it a wonder if it kindled there? (Lines 8 9). Additionally, Petrach
uses rhyming words encompassing a rhyme scheme with the pattern abbaabbacdefgh. Evidently, the
rhyme scheme is regular in the first two stanzas but is absent in the last two stanzas. It is

The Jewish Community Of Today
The Jewish community of today believe that the Pharisees of Jesus time have transformed into a group
called rabbinic Judaism after the destruction of the temple in 70 C.E. They are believed to be the
Rabbi s of today, and are living proof, that they all were not against Jesus.
Today, all major branches of Judaism claim at least some affinity with rabbinic Judaism of centuries
gone by, and perceive Judaism as issuing not simply from the Hebrew Bible but also from the
interpretation of those Scriptures by the Pharisees and their successors, the rabbis (Cook, M. J. p.
441).
With this in mind, it is believed that we can get a better understanding of the Pharisees and Scribes of
when Jesus walked the earth. By using the Gospels and the rabbinic writings one could get a clear
picture of this group according to Dr. Cook. There is one account in the Gospel of John were one
Pharisee questions Jesus and is trying to understand who Jesus is and what message is he bringing
them.
Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus
by night and said to him, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do
these signs that you do unless God is with him (John 3:1 2).
Nicodemus mentions that he is not the only one, and must mean that other Pharisees and Scribes did
believe that Jesus was from God. They most likely thought Him to be a prophet and not the Messiah
because he did not come and rescue them from their captures.

Confessions Of A Scholarship Essay
A week ago I almost gave up again. Saturday was spent on my in law s porch with a coffee and
Baileys stewing over my frustration in losing my 14th scholarship contest. I sat out there, posed like
an author, leaning on the arm of the chair with my chin rested on curled fingers, holding my pen like a

beginning of the year honestly believing if I just wrote enough essays statistically I would eventually
win something. Two authors, Kristina Ellis and Marianna Ragins, won $500,000 and $400,000
respectively while they were still in high school. Their books gave me the jumpstart to try writing as a
way to pay for school, and the idea grew into considering writing as a viable career. While I often
think about giving up this project for a second job I can t bring myself to do it; the learning benefits
now outweigh frustration of losing. I have no allusions to thinking I could win $400,000 in
scholarships but it lifts my spirits knowing it can be done. I didn t find Kristina Ellis s Confessions of
a Scholarship Winner or Marianne Ragin s Winning Scholarships for College to be exceptionally
helpful for writing but as an average student, I found their similar backgrounds encouraging. Neither
was a top athlete or elite test taker, just average students who were very dedicated to the scholarship

Snow Piercer Analysis
Snow Piercer was directed by Bong Joon ho in 2013, which is based on the French novel Le
Transperceneige. At first glance, most people will not understand the many themes that this particular
film has. After carefully examining the film the viewers may find the hidden themes in the film that
will be explained in this analysis. Themes that will discuss are humanity, revolt, and master of your
fate. There are many sub themes within the film but this particular analysis, it is the crucial focus on
these themes because it helps develop the central plot and conflict with in the film. The first theme
that will discuss is humanity. The whole plot of the movie focuses on preserving humanity or what s
left of it. After global warming had destroyed the earth and making unsuitable for any living creature
to survive the Conductor train made that makes an around trip cross the earth to try to preserve
humanity. Even though he was ridiculed about his theories and his plan to save humanity he still went
ahead with plans and end up saving what was left of humanity. Throughout the movie, many of the
characters humanity was tested. Even though the Conductor saved humanity he sectioned off the train
by class. The lower class was placed in the last cart of the train. They were treated horribly and were
supplied with the basic necessity of living. Since the lower class did not have the basic necessity of
living their humanity was questioned every day. Later in the film the protagonist in the

Censorship in the Media Essay
The parameters of the term censorship have been changed and manipulated very much over the years.
Television and movie ratings have become more lenient against violence and indiscretion because
these things are now seen as entertainment. Is this appropriate for our youth? Should children be
exposed to these images so early on? How does censorship in the media affect adolescents? Children
are the future of our society and need to have some understanding of real world occurrences.
Ultimately, censorship can only be determined by the parents. The media cannot filter every bit of
controversial images. What rights does the media have in this situation? How are their First
Amendment rights applied here? As an aspiring political science ... Show more content on

Some see this as the denial of an individual s freedom of speech.
In order to establish a group that censors televisions and movies, the Motion Picture Producers
Association (MPAA) was created. Each rating category has a description of the appropriate age at
which to view the film and whether or not a parent s accompaniment is necessary. The Motion Picture
Producers Association assesses a film and gives it a rating of G (general audiences), PG (parental
guidance suggested), PG 13 (parents strongly cautioned), R (restricted), or NC 17 (no one under
seventeen admitted). As the film industry has been changing over time, so have the ratings. More and
more parents are having issues with the ratings that some films are issued. The man behind the ratings,
Jack Valenti, president of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), says the system works
just fine. Parents use it and trust it, and that s why it s lasted for almost 35 years, Valenti says. It warns
parents in advance about what s in a particular movie, but ultimately, parents are responsible for the
behavior and conduct of their children not the ratings system (Hansen 273).
The main issue in censorship today is responsibility. Who is essentially responsible for properly
censoring and controlling

The Drowned World, Comedy, And Elegy
Climate change and drastic effects go hand in hand when it comes to evaluating aspects of the
Anthropocene. Literary forms such as tragedy, comedy, and elegy play an influential role in the
discussion of these subjects, shaping the way they are interpreted and comprehended. In J.G. Ballard s
The Drowned World, the use of these literary forms frame the ideas of how climate change affects a
future Earth and what that means for humanity. Furthermore, this work manifests different emerging
trends of the Anthropocene such as terraforming, biotechnological de extinction, and cosmopolitanism
to portray an altered world. Tragedy exemplifies itself in many different forms throughout Ballard s
novel. This literary form is especially conveyed through the tragic role of Kerans and the undeserved
death of Bodkins. The question of whether Kerans takes the form of a tragic hero is a duality
presented by the actions he has performed. His heroic tendencies reveal themselves during his attempt
to refill the lagoon after it was drained by Strangman; however, his reasons for doing so were selfish,
and he fled the scene immediately after the act was completed. While the act itself displayed Keran s
noble intentions of wanting to return the lagoon to its natural pristine state of primal times, his fleeing
afterwards illustrates his true motives of heading South leaving the others to deal with the impact of
his actions. Likewise, Bodkin attempted to refill the lagoon at an earlier place in the

Changes Within Urban Chinese Lifestyle Over The Last...
2.1. The Refocus on Economic Development Any investigation into the changes within Urban Chinese
lifestyle over the last thirty years must account for the macroeconomic changes brought by the
changes in the Chinese state policy. The people Republic of China (PRC) has undergone a number of
significant changes in policy and ideology during the course of its Communist leadership, and the
economic transformation it has experience represents arguably the most significant revolution in its
modern history. The changes in China s economy can be traced to between 1976 to 1978, when the
Cultural Revolution had effectively ended and widespread social, economic, and political conflict that
accompanied it. The Culture Revolution was motivated in large part by revolution ideology and an
attempt to purge the state of its liberal bourgeoisie elements, hence the forced reeducation and
relocation from the cities to rural areas of millions of Chinese citizens . As the havoc wrought by the
Cultural Revolution dissipated, China s leaders focused on the goal of enriching their impoverished
nation. The nation had been paralyzed economically by the chaos that had ensued . While there was
agreement among China s political leaders regarding the need for economic change, the road forward
for the nation was unclear. Although China s planned economy had performed well relative to other
low income nations around the world, its regional standing within East Asia was weak. Its neighbors,

BP Vs Exxon Fracking
The oil and gas industry has been a hot topic for most of my adult life. I was newly married when the
Exxon Valdez ran aground. I had two brothers working on off shore rigs in the Gulf of Mexico when
the BP Deepwater Horizon rig exploded. The world s dependence upon oil and gas has created a need
to find alternate energy and one of those ways is through fracking. Let us compare these oil disasters
and fracking, and first consider how managing ethical risk can reduce accidents, next compare the risk
that BP, Exxon, and the fracking industry face to continue to provide energy sources, and finally how
ethical leadership can help the oil and gas industry manage risk. The structure of business ethics is
voluntary, legal, and core practices. BP and Exxon had an obligation to act ethically in all three areas.
Exxon s 3rd mate was not license to pilot through Prince William Sound. The captain was drunk and
asleep and when he was awake and in charge he ignored the Coast Guard s recommendations. Exxon
knew the captain had issues with alcohol. The company hired to do the clean up was ill prepared, had

Analysis Of Blessing By Puanani Burgess
Jennette Walls once said, When God closes a door, he opens a window, but it s up to you to find it.
After reading the article Blessing Revealed by Puanani Burgess, this quote is the first connection that
emerges in my mind. The closed door represents the difficulties or disabilities that we have to face.
And the window represents our opportunities for succeeding; discover what your strengths are and
how you can utilize them as a weapon are the most significant. Everything is earth has two sides
which are the good and bad. For instance, the boy from Puanani Burgess story has screwed up with
the fact that he is having trouble with reading as well the math stuff in the beginning. After meeting

others. Making new friends and learning things in school are extremely rough as an English language
learner. I still remember the fear of getting lost in the strange place during my first week of school as a
Middle school kid here in American. The place where I lived is like 15 minutes walking distance from
the school. One day I was walking home from school and somehow I got lost. Without a cell phone
and not known the street from where I lived were extremely scared for me. I was only able to speak
very little English at that time, and that restricted me from asking for help from others. Having trouble

Chapters 1 2 In the first two chapters of Harper Lee s To Kill a Mockingbird, we are introduced to
some of the main characters and get some history on them. The main character of the story is a young
boy or girl, who is very smart and thoughtful for their age of 6. The story begins by describing the
ancestors of the main character as well as some background in the town of Maycomb, such as the
stories about the Radleys and their mysterious ways. While reading I noticed the incredibly obvious
difference in language, and way of life. When the character told of his/her childhood, and how there
were mules to bring supplies around, as well as the brick/dirt roads, which are almost nowhere to be

She was having lots of trouble in school due to her learning from Atticus and Calpurina, as well as not
getting along with the other children, like Walter, who she was rude to. Walter is from a poor family,
and I think shows how the social class works in the story. When I had first started reading the book I
thought Scout was a boy, since she was always hanging out with her brother and Dill. The way that
she acts is very different than how girls are supposed to act and I really appreciate the impartial views
of the author, and hope the views are continued through the story. I really like that Scout is a tough
girl, who isn t afraid to do all the things her brother and other boys do.
While Scout is a smart girl, I don t feel that a first grader can be as smart as the author is portraying, I
really think that the book is told from a much older Scout who is looking back on the events during
her childhood, which it had shown at the beginning of the story as she was talking in past tense. I m
incredibly interested to learn more about the creepy Radleys and what had happened to Gem s arm.

Attitudes towards women, and their role in American...
Attitudes towards women, and their role in American Musical Theatre.
For my essay, I am going to look at the attitudes towards women, both from men and other women,
and the significant role that that women had in telling the stories in American musical theatre.
Showboat was the first musical of its kind. Up to this point, musicals consisted of songs and dances,
with often feeble storylines based around the big stars. Showboat had a real story, adapted from a
novel, and both the singing and dancing told the story.
At the beginning of Showboat, after we have been introduced to the main characters, we hear the main
female characters attitude towards men and love.

The musical starts with a woman singing Summertime, to lull her baby to sleep. When this fails, her
husband has a try. He sings A woman is a sometime thing , this song shows the attitude of the men
towards their women in the community, that they are less respected than men.
Bess is clearly outside the close knit Catfish Row community. She is a bar girl and drug addict, who is
in total contrast to the stereotypical, hard working, religious women of Catfish Row. Crown
(Bess partner) kills a gambling partner and leaves Bess in Catfish
Row while he runs away from the police. Porgy and Bess become a couple, and we see Bess changing.
She starts to dress like the women of Catfish Row and gives money to help bury Clara s husband (who
Crown killed). The women s attitude towards her changes and they stop seeing her as a tart and start
looking at her as a friend.
Bess doesn t have a theme of her own, instead adopting part of the theme of whoever she s with.
The loneliness theme that she absorbs is used by Gershwin to show that Bess love can take away
Porgy s loneliness. Later this theme
adoption is used to link Bess with Sportin life. We are also shown
Bess dependence on other people as she doesn t sing a song on her own. By using Porgy s range of a

The Current Challenges of Cultural Identity Essay
Cultural identity refers to the feeling belonging to a certain culture that is attributed to the upbringing
of an individual in the given culture. Cultural identity gives a person the sense of belonging and
belonging towards their culture. Modern cultural studies show that cultural identification has taken a
new face. Various cultural identifiers can be used to identify the culture of an individual. These
identifiers include nationality, language, location, gender, religious beliefs, history, and ethnicity.

In most case, identity is shaped by culture. Since culture is a set of ideals life practices, routines and
attitudes set up by a certain community hence culture plays a major role in shaping the identity of an
individual. An individual s character and attributes can be because of their background. This is due to
the set up that one has grown up (Dumas 19). People tend to learn more about their culture, and as
they grow up it becomes part of them. They embrace the culture s beliefs and tend to do things
following the set routines. The aspect of following the set routine and beliefs play a significant part in
shaping the identity of an individual. The identity of an individual is evident in a person from the
things that they do about their culture. Some individuals with the knowledge that they have acquired
from their culture are willing to carry out activities depicting their knowledge. A person s identity can
be known from the way they express themselves in relation to their culture, his notion brings about the
aspect of one s identity in relation to their culture. This aspect of culture shaping an individual s
identity experiences challenges in some given instances. Migration to another country with a different
culture can be a big challenge to a person who is accustomed to a certain culture. This is because one
may be unable to fit in the new environment because of the new culture. Factors that can cause lack of

Ww1 Total War
Total war is a military conflict in which each of the participating nations mobilize all available
resources in order to completely extinguish another nation s ability to engage in warfare. The
utilization of the governments, economies and populations of the participating nations in WW1
reached an extent never seen before in history. A war economy was adopted throughout Britain,
France and Germany. The mass manufacturing of weapons, munitions and other war material was
prioritized, and with the mass leap of technology, it indeed affected the outcome and the nature of
WW1.
As in the wars prior to WW1, artillery was a key component and a prerequisite for battlefield success.
Artillery proved to be a crucial aspect and the number one threat to infantry and tanks alike. Artillery
came in several light, medium and heavy forms. Furthermore, field guns served in the direct line of
sight role whilst mortars and howitzers allowed for indirect fire support. Howitzers were established in
order to be used under cover or against hidden targets. They fired shells on a high trajectory through a

was a perfect Hollywood blockbuster, everything happened for a reason and it was a beautiful story

The Signalman and the Red Room are well known examples of nineteenth century ghost stories. Write

stories do you enjoy the most.
Charles Dickens and H.G. Wells were both living during the Victorian era. The many radical changes
in this era tainted their writing. Both Wells and Dickens were against the social situation at the time,
this is evident in their writings. Although Britain had many colonies, wealth was not circulating

In the Red Room the visitor is travelling through a corridor and then into a room. The corridor is
shadowy and the visitor has to move his candle from side to side he does this to see what is before him
on either side, before actually moving on. This creates an atmosphere of tension even before he
reaches the Red Room. When the visitor enters the red room he notices a shadow in the alcove , this
alarms him and he does not feel quite alone with the presence of the shadow. To reassure myself he
places candles in various places to block all shadows from forming.
In The Signalman Dickens uses large sentences so the result is therefore trying to create an effect of
ongoing images in the mind of the visitor and in the setting of the place. Dickens also uses long
sentences in The Signalman, when he is describing the setting. This is because he is trying to create an
image in the readers mind; this is achieved by long descriptions. An array of powerful adjectives is
utilized by Wells, such as grand staircase , great window this exaggerates the visitor s journey down
the corridor. The castle seems gargantuan in size and seems to overwhelm the visitor. Also there is not
much dialogue in The Red Room. This is mainly because the visitor is on his own with his mind.

Hybrid Cars Essay
Hybrid Cars

known as hybrids. The presentation gave some background about laws pertaining to emissions but at
the same time was designed more to educate the consumer as to what a hybrid actually is. You do not

Current Emission Standards are confusing. At this point in time, we are at a major transition as to what
will be the future of combustion vehicles. Present day standards do not call for the kind of emission
requirements that will account for the current rate of global warming. To fix this problem we must
either cut back on the number of vehicles on the road (not likely to happen) or use less fuel. There are

The increased fuel efficiency of the hybrids actually makes city driving more economical than
highway driving. Overall fuel efficiency (MPG) can be doubled. All of these factors lead to reduced
emissions.
At this point, it would be appropriate to include a brief summary of the Emission Standards as
proposed by the EPA. The Federal mandates on emissions include Tier 1 and Tier 2. Tier 1 took effect
in 1997 and was the first call for a reduction in emissions since the 50s. Tier 2 will be phased in
beginning 2004. Currently, Tier 1 standards take into account the size of the car when determining
emission ratings. When Tier 2 takes effect, the size of the car will no longer matter (i.e. an SUV will
be held to the same standards as a subcompact car). The Tier 1 and Tier 2 guidelines only apply to
passenger cars. Buses, trucks, and construction equipment will have different mandates.
The National LEV (NLEV) standard goes hand in hand with the California Emissions Standards
(developed by the CARB: California Air Resources Board). NLEV is short for the National Low
Emission Vehicle Standard. California came up with its own guidelines for emissions which are more
rigid than today?s Tier 1 standard. The Federal Government adopted this standard into its NLEV
program. It is a voluntary program that was proposed mostly by California and the Northeast US.
NLEV has been adopted to carry car designs from Tier 1 into Tier 2. The NLEV program consists of

Perhaps we could compare him to another leader, President William Jefferson Clinton, in his
exemplification of charisma. Another trait crucial to Schindler s leadership is the ability to shrewdly
harness the skills of others. The most obvious example of this ability is his employment of the Jewish
accountant Itzhak Stern. Despite the fact that Stern is Jew, Schindler knows he is the best man to help
run his business and keep track of his finances and contacts. He immediately recognizes Stern s ability
and puts his trust in him. Likewise, Schindler s utilization of Poldek Pfefferberg to connect him to the
black market is an equally important union. His trust in Pfefferberg also demonstrates his strong
character judgment. Moreover, another apparent manifestation of this quality is Schindler s use of the
Jews in his factory. Besides the fact that they were inexpensive, he knew that they would be
dependable and efficient. Finally, our leader develops an ongoing partnership with the evil
Hauptsturmfuhrer Amon Goeth to get what he needs, his workers. We could similarly compare
Schindler s recognition of trustworthy people and sense of opportunity in taking advantage of the
skills of others to leaders we have discussed in class like Ross Perot. Perhaps most importantly,
compassion is what Schindler may be most remembered for. Despite his image as a shrewd,
opportunistic businessman, the entrepreneur

Sports And Sports Fanatics
My everyday routine is nothing short of excitement, the thrill I get from my everyday life is seeing
what is going on in the sports realm. Sports controls my everyday activities and makes me who I am. I
have an extreme passion and love for almost every sport known to mankind. I am a hard core typical
sports fanatic in today s world. The first reason is sports controls how I act and talk. Secondly, I spend
an excessive amount of time consuming sports activities. Perhaps the trait the plays the biggest role in
making me such a huge fanatic is the amount of money I put into sports. First off, my vocabulary and
the way I talk is often controlled by sports and my passion for the games. Just like most sports fans I
love to trash talk especially when my teams are succeeding. For example, when I go to a sports event
if my team is winning I love rubbing it in the faces of the supporters for the opposing team. Sports
affects how I talk by effecting my mood based on my teams performances whether it is good or bad.
For instance, when the Philadelphia Eagles lose my mood is atrocious and I speak negatively with
little hope in my voice. However, when they win I use much more positive words through the week
and I become upbeat. Often people know if the Eagles won their game based on how I act and speak.
The way I talk is one aspect that proves that I am a typical sports fanatic that lets sports control my
life. Secondly, it is obvious to the world that I am a typical ports fanatic due

Drezner Reaction Analysis In Daniel W. Drezner s book, Theories of International Politics and
Zombies, Drezner explores the theoretical impact a zombie apocalypse would have on international
relations. In his exploration of ideas, Drezner analyzes the approaches of different types of feminism
disciplines to a zombie apocalypse. The two feminist ideas he explores are liberal feminism and post
structuralist feminism. Drezner however, ignores the idea of a radical feminist approach in a critical
time such as a zombie apocalypse. As an important discipline and idea around feminism, Drezner s
lack of acknowledgement of this idea proves to be hurtful to his argument of the reaction of feminists
as a whole to a potential zombie apocalypse. I will apply radical feminism to a zombie apocalypse to
better understand Drezner s focus on feminism, and contrast these ideas with those explored in the
book. I am to explore the differences between radical feminism and the two feminist theories Drezner
focuses on, liberalism and post structuralism.
Daniel Drezner explains the ideas that many feminist s share: the world is vastly different for women
than it is for men. The gap between the genders is to the detriment of women. Radical feminist would

reservations about reporting priests that were suspected of sexual abuse. The church has been hiding
reports and avoiding suspicion by not acting guilty. Instead of bringing the issue public they have
instead launched a three year investigation of U.S. women religious congregations which cost over
three million. The Vatican leadership also ordered a doctrinal evaluation of the U.S. women religious
leadership s central network, the Leadership Conference of Women Religious. Furthermore, bishops
have issued press releases as well as reports and studies. The United States Conference of Catholic
Bishops published two reports on February 27, 2004. The first report written by the John Jay College
of Criminal Justice included the data and statistics of the sexual abuse reports while the second report
written by the National Review Board talks about the cause and effect of the problem. In addition the
USCCB has also enacted the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young

The Crucible And The Handmaids Tale Analysis
By exploring settings societies governed by political and social patriarchies, both Arthur Miller s the
Crucible and Margaret Atwood s The Handmaids Tale provide commentary on women s role in
society. Both texts are set against a backdrop in which women are seen as a second class and are
subject to male dominance. The similarities in the two texts lie within their separate discussions of
gender roles in society, but they differ on the intricacies of this. From a theocratic standpoint, the play
and the novel dissect the faults in an oppressive society, with Miller making it abundantly clear that it
can in fact be challenged instead of conformed to. Atwood also somewhat entertains this concept, but
both writers have different perceptions on identity and individuality in worlds that don t seem much
unlike our own. The consequences of a patriarchal, theocratic state based on the foundation of
Puritanism is first challenged by The Crucible, which evaluates its effect on the women in its society.
This specific form of religion seemed unhealthy to Miller, as in the search for the perfect people,
Puritans became obsessed with seeking out the damned and condemning them. Perfection was seen as
a responsibility to these people as they wanted to ensure the Devil could not harm them, and the
playwright attributes this paranoia as one of the main reasons behind the mass hysteria in Salem that
followed. The townspeople were constantly looking for evil in everything that went wrong, and

Trauma Symptom Inventory Case Study
The Trauma Symptom Inventory (TSI), originally published by the Psychological Assessment
Resources, in 1995 and created by John Briere Ph. D., is utilized to evaluate acute and chronic
posttraumatic symptomology. The materials associated with administering this test include the use of a
computer with Windows XP, 7, 8, or 10, must maintain a NTFS file system, CD ROM drive for
installation, internet connection or a telephone in order to activate. One can download all of the other
necessary materials from PariConnect, which include the introductory kit, necessary software,
professional manuals, scoring sheets, among other reusable booklets. Prices range from $52.00
upwards to $375.00.
Test Construction
The TSI consists of 100 item questionnaire ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Taking into consideration that the scales are able to capture a broader range of behavior they are also
limited to their data, and may eventually need to be updated. One major weakness is that there is no
data that indicated that with treatment the TSI score of a PTSD patient will decrease. Therefore, one
cannot be sure if the overall use of the test is helpful or not. Another weakness is the use of validity
scales, since answering the questions are based on the participant being honest. In my experience,
most individuals are not entirely honest and either underplay or over exaggerate their issues upon the
first meeting. As far as uniqueness, I am not entirely sure how unique the TSI is since it is measuring
whether or not an individual is symptomatic with regards to trauma. I feel that anyone could the
criteria to diagnose PTSD or any other trauma related condition into test form and say it is useful in
assisting with diagnosing PTSD. Since the test does not conclusively diagnose PTSD and does not
provide with any follow up to support whether treatment decreases symptoms, I feel it is very similar
to most test that assist in diagnoses. In my professional opinion, I feel that the test may be useful at
times, however, I do not feel that it would be useful in patience that a therapist or psychologist has just
met. Trauma is a sensitive subject and most individuals in therapy, as stated prior, are not necessarily
willing to open up immediately or have a tendency to embellish their experiences. Therefore, I believe
that while the test could assist in a diagnosis that the data may be skewed and the test have to be taken
again in monthly intervals, which is not the intended purpose of the test. Lastly, in my professional
opinion I would not use the test. I feel that it may be a waste of money and time, to come up with a
diagnosis that an

Analysis Of The Ghost Of King Hamlet
The Puppet Master
The Ghost of King Hamlet in William Shakespeare s Hamlet is a heavily debated character within the
play. Although the Ghost calls Hamlet his son there s no proof the Ghost is in fact the spirit of King
Hamlet. Which brings into question the nature of its character and motives. The Ghost of King Hamlet
is clearly evil based on its willingness to jeopardize Hamlets soul for revenge against Claudius. Based
solely on a religious standpoint, we could come to a few conclusions about the Ghost in Hamlet. One
being that even Hamlet was unsure of its origin and purity. He was afraid when he says Angels and
ministers of grace defend us! Be thou a spirit of health or goblin damned (Hamlet 1.4.39). John
Mullan, a Professor of English at University College London speculates in his Ghosts in Shakespeare
article that He does not simply take word of the Ghost on trust, ...and devout Protestants did not
believe in Ghosts, and Protestant Theologians often argued that apparitions could therefore only be
devices of the devil to disturb and mislead Christians (Mulan). We know Shakespeare struggled with
his own faith. In knowing this, it s hard to determine which faith characteristics he would have given
the Ghost and Hamlet, but it does seem like more than one was used for Hamlets character. King
Hamlet s Ghost appears to Hamlets saying, I am thy fathers spirit doomed for a certain term to walk
the night and for the day confined to fast in fires, Till

These claims included accusations that Napster was response for allowing users to infringe upon
existing copyrights and were even encouraging users to download unlicensed copyrighted materials.
When the recording industry won this landmark lawsuit, Napster stopped offering their file sharing
services to users, and soon their company failed. The Institute for Policy Innovation make a
conclusion that global music piracy causes $12.5 billion of economic losses every year, 71,060 U.S.
jobs lost, a loss of $2.7 billion in workers earnings, and a loss of $422 million in tax revenues, $291
million in personal income tax and $131 million in lost corporate income and production taxes. Today,
most people who download music illegally do it by using new peer to peer networks like BitTorrent.
The BitTorrent protocol is for of handling a lot of data very quickly and is very popular for people

The Skeleton Council Poem Stephanie Philpott Professor David Barrick Writing 1000G January 28 2015 Analytical Essay The Skeleton Council by Katherine Leyton The Skelton Council by Katherine Leyton was published in Volume 36 No. 4 of Contemporary Verse 2 during the spring of 2014. The poem opens on a house inhabited by a woman and a group of skeletons that meet every evening for examination. One night, the woman blinks and sees a doppelganger of herself in an empty room. The Skeleton Council by Katherine Leyton uses symbolism, imagery, and style to express the oppressive nature of family secrets and their distortive and obsessive effects on the narrator. The first half of the poem is comprised of a more complex syntax than the second half. The sentences in the first half are longer, averaging 3 lines each and use a more descriptive diction with words such as anxious (line 3), encouraging (line 5), and sideboards (line 2). This heavier style brings forward an oppressive element as the meaning is trapped behind dense language. In the second half, the style becomes more simplistic with sentences averaging 1 2 lines and word choice becoming more concise. This change in style clearly presents the meaning in the second half taking away the oppressive atmosphere and reinforcing the distortion of the narrators feelings. In The Skeleton Council by Katherine Leyton, the symbolism of skeletons as well as the juxtaposition that imagery and style form with the narrator s feelings are utilized throughout the poem. These ideas, which Suzanne Collins used in her book, can be traced to our own past. In order for drugs to gain access to the cells, they must move between the different compartments, more importantly cell membranes, after being administered. The two most important methods for dealing will cell membrane travel are diffusion through lipid and carrier mediated transport. Diffusion through lipid is when non polar molecules can dissolve easily in membrane lipids and thus diffuse readily across the cell membrane without any assistance. After the war ended there were many results that would forever linger throughout America and the world. The South was known as the Confederate States of America, seceded from the North, which was known as the Union. Northerners demanded for collective bargaining to develop goals such as free education, better salaries and working conditions for workers, and better rights for woman. Anthony did not right for a woman s right to vote or Katharine Hepburn did not defy Hollywood s ideal view of the traditional female movie star. Women have not always been given such a voice or granted such a place in marriage and society as they have today. In large part, the level of equality men and women share in the present time is due to the bold and brave feminist literature writers of the nineteenth century. One such writer being Henrik Isben who, in 1879, wrote his play A Doll s House. A Doll s House centers around the character of Nora Helmer, wife to a wealthy, domineering husband, Torvald. As a nineteenth century wife, Nora was conflicted throughout the play with the male chauvinistic view of a woman s role in marriage and society and her own aspirations of self identity. In Act I of A Doll s House, Isben introduced Nora to the audience through the viewpoint of how society thought of women during that time childlike, uneducated, dependent, and submissive. The first act of the play starts off when Nora had returned home from Christmas shopping, and Torvald was in the study. Singing and giddy, Nora was excited for the Christmas festivities ahead for her husband and children. She snuck macaroons from her pocket and ate them quickly and secretively, like a child sneaking a cookie before dinner. Nora asked Torvald to come out of the study to see what she had bought. The pages of the story that are in black and white occur when the family meet an obstacle, such as long wavy grass , and once they have overcome said obstacle the illustration returns to colour. • 19. Analysis Of Upon The Breeze She Spread Her Golden Hair Upon the Breeze she spread her Golden Hair by Franscesco Petrach Franscesco Petrach sonnet Upon the Breeze she Spread her Golden Hair is a love poem in which the persona describes his love feelings about the subject, Laura. However, he laments that while his love for her is everlasting, it only results in pain because the feeling is not mutual thus not reciprocated by Laura. In fact, the structure and style of the poem help in conveying his message. Petrach uses metre, rhyme, and alliteration to impart the feeling of euphony in the audience regarding the poem. Nonetheless, there are few instances in which he deviates from the set structure, which mirrors real life situations and the love experience he describes as imperfect. First, the poet uses metre, a style that emphasizes the use of a specific structure, which is an appropriate way of presenting poems with positive themes such as love. In this case, the poet achieves metre through the use of a uniform number of syllables in every line of the first stanza (10 syllables per line). This approach not only makes the poem memorable in recitation and listening but also relaxes the listener which is important in understanding the subject matter. Petrach uses a qualitative metre, which concentrates on the use of uniform syllabic arrangement. As a result, he creates an aesthetic euphony thus making the listener and the reciter to enjoy the presentation of the poem. The technique is appropriate in the presentation of a love sonnet. Equally, the first two stanzas have four lines each, but the last two stanzas have three lines each. This aspect aligns with the two perspectives presented in the poem, the first being his great affection for Laura, and the second is an expression of the pain he experiences as a result of the unreciprocated love. Furthermore, he has been unable to express his feelings to her, which compounds his pain evident in the words I had love s tinder in my breast unburned, was it a wonder if it kindled there? (Lines 8 9). Additionally, Petrach uses rhyming words encompassing a rhyme scheme with the pattern abbaabbacdefgh. Evidently, the rhyme scheme is regular in the first two stanzas but is absent in the last two stanzas. It is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They are believed to be the Rabbi s of today, and are living proof, that they all were not against Jesus. Today, all major branches of Judaism claim at least some affinity with rabbinic Judaism of centuries gone by, and perceive Judaism as issuing not simply from the Hebrew Bible but also from the interpretation of those Scriptures by the Pharisees and their successors, the rabbis (Cook, M. J. p. 441). With this in mind, it is believed that we can get a better understanding of the Pharisees and Scribes of when Jesus walked the earth. By using the Gospels and the rabbinic writings one could get a clear picture of this group according to Dr. Cook. There is one account in the Gospel of John were one Pharisee questions Jesus and is trying to understand who Jesus is and what message is he bringing them. Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him (John 3:1 2). The Motion Picture Producers Association assesses a film and gives it a rating of G (general audiences), PG (parental guidance suggested), PG 13 (parents strongly cautioned), R (restricted), or NC 17 (no one under seventeen admitted). As the film industry has been changing over time, so have the ratings. More and more parents are having issues with the ratings that some films are issued. The man behind the ratings, Jack Valenti, president of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), says the system works just fine. Parents use it and trust it, and that s why it s lasted for almost 35 years, Valenti says. It warns parents in advance about what s in a particular movie, but ultimately, parents are responsible for the behavior and conduct of their children not the ratings system (Hansen 273). • 24. The Drowned World, Comedy, And Elegy Climate change and drastic effects go hand in hand when it comes to evaluating aspects of the Anthropocene. Literary forms such as tragedy, comedy, and elegy play an influential role in the discussion of these subjects, shaping the way they are interpreted and comprehended. In J.G. Ballard s The Drowned World, the use of these literary forms frame the ideas of how climate change affects a future Earth and what that means for humanity. Furthermore, this work manifests different emerging trends of the Anthropocene such as terraforming, biotechnological de extinction, and cosmopolitanism to portray an altered world. Tragedy exemplifies itself in many different forms throughout Ballard s novel. This literary form is especially conveyed through the tragic role of Kerans and the undeserved death of Bodkins. The question of whether Kerans takes the form of a tragic hero is a duality presented by the actions he has performed. His heroic tendencies reveal themselves during his attempt to refill the lagoon after it was drained by Strangman; however, his reasons for doing so were selfish, and he fled the scene immediately after the act was completed. While the act itself displayed Keran s noble intentions of wanting to return the lagoon to its natural pristine state of primal times, his fleeing afterwards illustrates his true motives of heading South leaving the others to deal with the impact of his actions. Likewise, Bodkin attempted to refill the lagoon at an earlier place in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Refocus on Economic Development Any investigation into the changes within Urban Chinese lifestyle over the last thirty years must account for the macroeconomic changes brought by the changes in the Chinese state policy. The people Republic of China (PRC) has undergone a number of significant changes in policy and ideology during the course of its Communist leadership, and the economic transformation it has experience represents arguably the most significant revolution in its modern history. The changes in China s economy can be traced to between 1976 to 1978, when the Cultural Revolution had effectively ended and widespread social, economic, and political conflict that accompanied it. The Culture Revolution was motivated in large part by revolution ideology and an attempt to purge the state of its liberal bourgeoisie elements, hence the forced reeducation and relocation from the cities to rural areas of millions of Chinese citizens . As the havoc wrought by the Cultural Revolution dissipated, China s leaders focused on the goal of enriching their impoverished nation. The nation had been paralyzed economically by the chaos that had ensued . While there was agreement among China s political leaders regarding the need for economic change, the road forward for the nation was unclear. Although China s planned economy had performed well relative to other low income nations around the world, its regional standing within East Asia was weak. Its neighbors, ... I had two brothers working on off shore rigs in the Gulf of Mexico when the BP Deepwater Horizon rig exploded. The world s dependence upon oil and gas has created a need to find alternate energy and one of those ways is through fracking. Let us compare these oil disasters and fracking, and first consider how managing ethical risk can reduce accidents, next compare the risk that BP, Exxon, and the fracking industry face to continue to provide energy sources, and finally how ethical leadership can help the oil and gas industry manage risk. The structure of business ethics is voluntary, legal, and core practices. BP and Exxon had an obligation to act ethically in all three areas. Exxon s 3rd mate was not license to pilot through Prince William Sound. The captain was drunk and asleep and when he was awake and in charge he ignored the Coast Guard s recommendations. For my essay, I am going to look at the attitudes towards women, both from men and other women, and the significant role that that women had in telling the stories in American musical theatre. Showboat was the first musical of its kind. Up to this point, musicals consisted of songs and dances, with often feeble storylines based around the big stars. Showboat had a real story, adapted from a novel, and both the singing and dancing told the story. Bess is clearly outside the close knit Catfish Row community. She is a bar girl and drug addict, who is in total contrast to the stereotypical, hard working, religious women of Catfish Row. Crown (Bess partner) kills a gambling partner and leaves Bess in Catfish Row while he runs away from the police. Porgy and Bess become a couple, and we see Bess changing. She starts to dress like the women of Catfish Row and gives money to help bury Clara s husband (who Crown killed). The women s attitude towards her changes and they stop seeing her as a tart and start looking at her as a friend. Bess doesn t have a theme of her own, instead adopting part of the theme of whoever she s with. The loneliness theme that she absorbs is used by Gershwin to show that Bess love can take away Porgy s loneliness. Later this theme adoption is used to link Bess with Sportin life. The Crucible And The Handmaids Tale Analysis By exploring settings societies governed by political and social patriarchies, both Arthur Miller s the Crucible and Margaret Atwood s The Handmaids Tale provide commentary on women s role in society. Both texts are set against a backdrop in which women are seen as a second class and are subject to male dominance. The similarities in the two texts lie within their separate discussions of gender roles in society, but they differ on the intricacies of this. From a theocratic standpoint, the play and the novel dissect the faults in an oppressive society, with Miller making it abundantly clear that it can in fact be challenged instead of conformed to. Atwood also somewhat entertains this concept, but both writers have different perceptions on identity and individuality in worlds that don t seem much unlike our own. The consequences of a patriarchal, theocratic state based on the foundation of Puritanism is first challenged by The Crucible, which evaluates its effect on the women in its society. This specific form of religion seemed unhealthy to Miller, as in the search for the perfect people, Puritans became obsessed with seeking out the damned and condemning them. Perfection was seen as a responsibility to these people as they wanted to ensure the Devil could not harm them, and the playwright attributes this paranoia as one of the main reasons behind the mass hysteria in Salem that followed. Another weakness is the use of validity scales, since answering the questions are based on the participant being honest. In my experience, most individuals are not entirely honest and either underplay or over exaggerate their issues upon the first meeting. As far as uniqueness, I am not entirely sure how unique the TSI is since it is measuring whether or not an individual is symptomatic with regards to trauma.
