Essay about Guide to Becoming a Jerk
Guide to Becoming a Jerk
Being a jerk can be fun. It gives you a feeling of dominance over others; you are more important then
the rest. You are the wolf among a flock of sheep; people fear you, and therefore look up to you. Being
a jerk is not hard; all you have to do is think about yourself and your own feelings, and forget that
everyone else has emotions. There are various ways of achieving this perception of importance; you
can put people down and belittle them, pretend you re better than everyone, or just be plain mean,
unpolite, and nasty. Sure, there might be some little voice inside saying that you are no better than
anyone else is, but you can drown out that nagging reminder with constant insults to others. Nothing
replaces ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This will make the other person feel insecure and reluctant to talk to you; the people around you will
either think your comments are funny (they aspire to be a jerk like you), or they will consider you rude
and disgraceful. It doesn t really matter what anyone else thinks though, does it? You are yourself and
no one else; you feel only your feelings and no one else s; so why should you be concerned with
anyone but yourself? You are king in your own mind, and your perception is everything.
If you can t be bothered to be a witty, sarcastic jerk, you can just be a regular, mean jerk. This kind of
jerk is intolerant and impatient (to a higher degree than the other type of jerk), rude, and
unsarcastically mean. The next time someone gives you something or does something for you, don t
say thank you or show gratitude; you should even go so far as to complain about what they gave you
or how they should accomplish things faster. Don t be grateful; if you are grateful, people will think
that they can win your favor with good deeds; that s manipulation. You can t let anyone win your
favor; that would show weakness, and you have to be strong to show that you are of great importance.
Be disrespectful to everyone, and elders and authority figures especially. Respect can also be linked to
weakness, since respecting someone can be taken

The Disillusionment Of Optimism In Candide, By Voltaire
In the novel Candide, Voltaire satirizes the disillusionment of optimism by depicting a multitude of
hardships seen around the world. Candide, the open minded protagonist, has been exposed to Pangloss
s optimistic philosophy for the majority of his life. However, throughout the course of the novel, it
becomes increasingly difficult to see the positive side of all the catastrophe surrounding him. It is only
after he starts doubting this philosophy that Candide starts to become influenced by the teachings of
Martin. Although Candide resides in security at the conclusion, Voltaire draws on the disastrous events
seen throughout the novel and utilizes Martin s pessimistic point of view to claim that human nature is
incomplete without suffering. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In a way, Martin acts as the embodiment of Voltaire s opinions, as the author constantly satirizes
optimism in the novel. For example, when Candide sees Vanderdendur s ship sink after stealing
Candide s money, he comments that crime is sometimes punished (Voltaire 93). This statement itself
inherently points to the loss of optimism within Candide, as he admits that some crime does go
unpunished. Furthermore, Martin draws truth the innate evil of the world by pointing out that the devil
has drowned the rest (94) of the ship s members. Even though the bad deed of the Dutch captain had
been punished, it came with the effect of killing a larger amount of innocent men. Through this
sequence of events, Voltaire thus states that a righteous event can only occur at the expense of
inflicting suffering upon others. The end of the novel places Pangloss and Martin together on the farm
in Constantinople, and it is in this tranquil setting that readers find the most revealing truths of
humanity. At this point, the pessimism of Martin has become such a large influence that even
Cacambo and the old woman draw similar conclusions about humanity. While on the farm, Martin
makes his final judgment and states that the restlessness of anxiety or ... the lethargy of boredom (140)
are the only choices man could make in life. Both of these choices represent

Hunter S. Tompson and Gonzo Journalism Essay
Hunter S. Tompson and Gonzo Journalism In the late sixties a young journalist and free lance novelist
named Hunter S. Thompson (HST) emerged with a new, crazed and exaggerated brand of reporting. It
was sooner or later referred to as Gonzo . HST s own definition of gonzo has varied over the years, but
he still maintains that a good gonzo journalist needs the talent of a master journalist, the eye of an
artist/photographer and the heavy balls of an actor and that gonzo is a style of reporting based on
William Faulkner s idea that the best fiction is far more true than any kind of journalism (Carroll, page
192). Gonzo journalism has also been referred to as outlaw journalism, new journalism, alternative
journalism, literary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Steadman s work will be found on the title page to this essay). As the deadline for the article
approached, and with the article still incomplete, HST resorted to ripping out pages of his notebook
and sending them to the editors. What resulted was the beginning of gonzo journalism. Many see
gonzo journalism to be a variation of a theme, which began with new journalism in the 60 s, led
primarily by author Tom Wolfe. (The Electric Kool Aid Acid Test, etc.) New Journalism was said to
have broken all the rules of traditional journalism. The old style journalists were supposed to take an
objective point of view in their articles. The new journalists were far more subjective, getting
personally involved in the stories they were reporting. New journalism really isn t new at all.
Objectivity has been the great myth of journalism. As hard as media sources try to be objective, they
can never truly achieve it. Everything from space limitations (a journalist must decide what is and
what is not important enough to fit into a column) to illustrations (this gives readers a non objective
picture in their head about the issue) infringe on objectivity. New journalism and gonzo journalism
alike pay no regard to the objectivity laws of journalism and instead focus their works very little on
the facts but on the facts , as they

The Juvenile Justice System Essay
1. Name four problems that existed with the juvenile justice system in the early 19thcentury. The
juvenile justice system was subject to a lot of corruption and civil rights violations in its early stages.
Juveniles did not have the same rights as adults and could be forced into terrible living or working
conditions. With no child labor laws, delinquent juveniles could be sentenced to forced labor in
factories or to houses of refuge. With the ruling of Ex Parte Crouse, the state took ultimate
responsibility of children and send them to these institutions, even against the will of the parents.
Some of these institutions, such as houses of refuge may have started with good intention, but they
ultimately led to rampart corruption and abuse of juveniles. 2. Which type of children and young
people did Reform Schools focus on working with? Houses of Refuge were intended for which type of
juveniles? Reform schools formed to take custody of wayward or incorrigible children that the state
deemed necessary. A child could be taken from their parents and sent to a reform school if it is deemed
that the parents are not providing a good enough home for them. Houses of refuge were designed to
get juveniles out of the adult system. It was proven that locking up youths with criminals was a bad
idea for multiple reasons, so houses of refuge were formed to separate them. They were designed for
those juveniles that the state deemed savable, and those seen as to far gone would be sent to the

Abu Ghraib Torture Essay
The acts of torture performed on the inmates at Abu Ghraib were both cruel and inhumane. But what if
the reason the guards tortured the inmates was due to the result of obedience from their superiors. The
cause of the torture of the prisoners at Abu Ghraib could have stemmed from situational factors
instead of the will of a few aggressive soldiers. Authority figures that use persuasive methods can be
very influential. There are many circumstantial possibilities as to why the guards treated the prisoners
cruelly. Most people don t attribute the torture to many situational and external causes. In this case,
most people attribute the torture to the internal faults of the guards when it could very well be outside
sources at fault. Fear ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Issue involvement is a type of involvement in which the attitudinal issue under consideration has
important consequences for the self (Franzoi, 2003, Pg 217). Once again, fear could have been an
issue in the persuasion of the guards. The guards realized that they had to do their jobs and act in
compliance with orders or face the consequences. In many of the torture pictures at Abu Ghraib, the
prisoners are wearing bags on their heads or something to mask their face. The supervisors of the jail
could have masked the inmates to make the guards feel less responsible about the vicious acts. Since
the victim was masked and cannot tell who is torturing them, a kind of separation is created between
the guard and the inmate. The results are also unequivocal in relation to the distance from the direct
exertion of violence: the greater the distance, the less the subjects feel responsible and the greater the
obedience (Meeus Raaijmakers 159). By masking the prisoners a sense of deindividualization and lack
of self awareness occurred because the soldier knows that the inmate does not know who he/she is.
Without such self awareness, the deindividuated don t think of themselves as separate individuals and
do not attend to their own inner values and behavioral standards (Franzoi 336). With this sense of
deindividualization, the guards performed actions they normally would not ever do. Since they

Why Is Secrecy Important In The Scarlet Letter
Secrecy is the key to survival when surrounded by a scornful community that is ready to pounce on
anyone s sinful past. Concealment of one s feelings not only protects one s weaknesses but also helps
in avoiding conflicts with society. Many characters in The Scarlet Letter, particularly Hester,
Dimmesdale, and Chillingworth, hide their feelings in order to keep their dark pasts from the grasps of
both each other and the Puritan society that aches to condemn the sins of criminals. In order to create
suspense throughout the story and emphasize the importance of secrecy, Nathaniel Hawthorne hides
the pasts of his obscure characters from not only the Puritan society within The Scarlet Letter but also
from the community outside the novel: the readers. Although it is apparent ... Show more content on

However, the audience is never told what clues Chillingworth uncovers. In fact, Chillingworth s
thought processes are never revealed to us. For example, when he catches a glimpse of Dimmesdale s
chest in his house, the audience is not told of what he has seen. Even when Dimmesdale reveals his
chest to the Puritan crowd at the end of the novel to confess his secret sin, the audience is still not told
of what is on the chest. Interestingly, the crowd holds a variety of accounts on what was on
Dimmesdale s chest. Some say that there was a scarlet letter imprinted on his chest while others deny
that there was any mark whatever on his breast, more than on a new born infant s, (236). We are only
able to infer that there is some sort of A on Dimmesdale s chest because he tells Hester, Happy are
you, Hester, that wear the scarlet letter openly upon your bosom! Mine burns in secret! (176).
Hawthorne keeps the audience confused with the ambiguity of Dimmesdale s confession by keeping
the Puritan crowd disconcerted with the different accounts of the

Spider Veins Research Paper
How to remove spider veins naturally is something many women young and old want to know.
[wp_ad_camp_2]
I spent years trying to get rid of this embarrassing affliction caused by these little veins on my legs.
Spider veins are somewhat like varicose veins only smaller.
Women are 4 times more likely to suffer from them compared to men. And there are many reasons
why you may have this problem.
Being overweight, ageing (of course), hereditary, menopause (changes in estrogen levels), pregnancy,
standing for long periods of time. Sitting for long periods of time, smoking, poor circulation, and
taking the contraceptive pill.
These veins are usually found on the legs, back of the calves, thighs, and face.
Keep in mind, how to remove spider veins ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The veins will also return if there is not enough compression used afterward. Maybe this was my
problem.
I haven t tried laser treatment, I can t give you my opinion.
When looking at these types of treatments for how to remove spider veins, both are quite costly.
Home remedies may take longer to achieve results, although, they are much cheaper.
How To Remove Spider Veins Naturally
There are many options you can choose from when it comes to removing spider veins naturally.
Along with your chosen remedy, include leg exercises, designed to help improve blood flow to the
legs.

Apple Cider Vinegar
Pour apple cider vinegar into a bowl and soak a cloth in it and wrap around the spider veins, do this
about 3 times a day for 10 to 15 min.
Alternatively, you can massage vinegar into the veins.
Apple cider vinegar will improve circulation and contains anti inflammatory properties.
You should see an improvement within 3 to 4 weeks of doing this 3 times daily. It can be quite time
consuming, therefore, if you can only fit in doing it once or twice, just be prepared that a favourable
outcome will take

Still, customers will perceive quality based advantage as an advantage for Boeing s product over its

Yet, Boeing has made certain that input from all significant stakeholders are factored into its products

company is integrated and used correctly by all employees. Therefore, it is always possible to make
changes and or modifications to a company s existing product lifecycle, but not necessary if it s not

Psychology And Christianity By David Entwistle
4 MAT Review: Integrative Approaches to Psychology and Christianity
Allison McLeod
Liberty University
Summary
The book Integrative Approaches to Psychology and Christianity by David Entwistle, allowed readers
to explore a synopsis that addressed worldview issues, theoretical foundations and the models of
integration. One subject that I enjoyed reviewing was the comparisons that Enwistle displayed of the
relationship of psychology and theology throughout the class text. Additionally, Entwistle offered
information that displayed how the two are both designed by God and that God is the creator of all
truth. (Entwistle, p.150, 2010).Thus, the author attempted to show the reader various examined claims
and tensions that resulted from these influences.
We as individuals ordinarily go through life looking at life through our own views of how things
should be grounded on our own worldviews. While, a worldview is how a person views the world and
the theories that they personally have of the world. Nevertheless, Entwistle provides a fresh outlook
for the observer on how psychology is integrated into our worldviews, as a source of guidance and
faith. In addition, this is addressed on theology in which, the bible stems from. I found the assimilation
of psychology and theology that the author provides, to be essential in assisting individuals with a
variety of issues. For some individuals this can be a challenge, being that some Christians have a hard
time with integrating

The First Nations Peoples Of Canada
The First Nations peoples of Canada s right to self govern has been a widely debated and highly
controversial topic since the British North America Act in 1867, when the Canadian government
gained the authority to negotiate treaties with the First Nations and purchase their land. First Nations
people believe that they have an inherent right to self govern, as they were the sole inhibitors of
Canada before the Europeans made contact in the 1500 s. Before colonization, the aboriginals had
formed their own communities, each with it s own culture, customs and laws; they occupied their own
land and had chiefs to govern their people. In 1876, the government of Canada passed the Indian Act,

Financial Transparency Act, learning that their chief was making an annual salary of upwards of

conditions. Members of the band have come forward with some of the living conditions; band
members were struggling month to month in mouldy homes with poor drinking water and lack of
sewer pipes, while nothing had been done to provide social programs or other amenities , as told by

many people on reserves living in third world conditions in a country with such a high standard of
living, due to greed and corruption by it s leaders; the First Nation s community is not ready for self
governance. With the little control that the state has allowed the First Nations, the majority have
shown that they cannot uphold a suitable standard of living and next to no social programs for their

if they ever went into foreclosure, they could be secure in knowing that they would still have a place

be incorporating some socialism factors of government into our federal government. I consider this a

Basic Elements Of Poetry
Poetry
Poetry is a way of feeling life, according to Daisy Zamora, a Nicaraguan poet. Her statement helps
answer how does poetry help us feel life . Poetry captures intense experiences of creative perceptions
of the world in a musical language. If prose is just like talking, poetry is like singing.
If you want to understand poetry, you must understand its basic elements. In this lesson, you will

wants to deliver, his purpose in writing the poem and identify techniques he used in his poem.

Every poem has a speaker, or a voice that talks to the reader. In prose, the narrator is the speaker but

Most research on capital structure has focused on public, nonfinancial corporations with access to U.S.
or international capital markets. This is the right place to start. These companies have the broadest
menu of financing choices and can adjust their capital structures at relatively low cost. Yet even 40
years after the
Modigliani and Miller research, our understanding of these firms financing choices is limited. We
know much more about financing tactics for example the tax efficient design or timing of a specific
security issue than about financing strategy, for example the firm s choice of a target overall debt
level.
Research on financing tactics confirms the importance of taxes, information differences and agency
costs. Whether these factors have first order effects on the overall levels of debt vs. equity financing is
still an open question. Debt ratios of established, public U.S. corporations vary within apparently
homogenous industries.
There is also variation over time, even when taxation, information differences and agency problems
are apparently constant.
Some Facts about Financing
Most of the aggregate gross investment by U.S. nonfinancial corporations has been financed from
internal cash flow (depreciation and retained earnings).
External financing in most years covers less than 20 percent of real investment, and most of that
financing is debt. Net stock issues are frequently negative: that is, more

Gender and Aging Paper
Issues Men Face Men, as well as women, face frequent issues while they age, whether that is age
discrimination, mental health diseases, or just general health problems. As for men, they live a much
shorter life than women do. A numberless of people wonder why that is: Men have an inclination of
high risk behaviors, such as alcohol abuse, smoking, driving recklessly, and going to war. Some
women participate in some, if not all of these activities as well more men participate in these activities

One reason this is that men work as long as they possibly can. If men keep working while the women
retire, we as a society will think that men are still young because they keep working. As for women,
we think they will be decrepit since they would rather retire at an earlier age. Not only do men appear
to be decrepit at a later age, but they also seem more attractive at an older age than women. This could
be that women tend to obtain more wrinkles than men women touch their face more than men because
of applying makeup. Women care a lot more about their face than men do. This is why men appear to
be older at a later age. While both men and women have equal rates of developing Alzheimer s
disease, men have a greater chance of developing vascular dementia than women are. In a study
shown, men have more brain atrophy than women do. As people age, they tend to lose brain cells. The
brain will shrink in volume as people get older. The brain does this due to the number of brain cells

Examples Of Inventions During The European Industrial...
Inventions during the European Industrial Revolution
There are many inventions during the European Industrial Revolution that impacts society for
Europeans. There are inventions that made other inventions better and also inventions that
revolutionized inventions that we already possessed. A man named James Kay in 1733 invented one of
the inventions called the Flying Shuttle. He built it, supposedly, with nothing more that a pocketknife
and his tool. The flying shuttle improved on the old hand loom. A worker pulled a cord rope back and
forth to send a small piece of canoe shaped wood, or shuttle, flying across a wood frame through
threads to weave cloth. The flying shuttle was a small improvement and was still powered by man
other than coal, wind, water. Nonetheless it began the crucial process by which unskilled workers
could produce more cloth with machines that skilled workers could produce by hand. This invention
in my opinion made a big impact to the European Industrial Revolution. I think just about all of these
inventions are very good for society, and changed the world as we know it today.

The Steam Engine was the energy behind the most advanced textile inventions, such as the spinning
mule and the power loom. It symbolized the transition from human power in homes to machine power
in factories. The steam engine was originally invented in England to pull water out of coal mines. For
thousands of years, wood from local forests had been the main fuel in England, as well as the main
material for shipbuilding and housing construction. By the end of the seventeenth century few forests
remained. By the early seventeen hundreds, the easy to open coal pits were gone, and mine shafts as
deep as two hundred feet were dug to find it. Finally, in 1708, Thomas Newcomen invented a simple
engine that used steam to pump water out of

Different Theories About Learning Styles Essay
Introduction Learning style is an individual s unique approach to learning based on strengths,
weaknesses, and, preferences. Learning styles explains the concept that every person learns
differently. Assessments of learning style typically ask individuals to evaluate what sort of information
presentation they prefer, and, what kind of mental activity they find most engaging, and, attractive for
them. Theories about learning styles agree that all people can be classified according to their style of
learning. In this paper different theories about learning styles are reviewed briefly. At the end, Gendlin
experiential theory is reviewed in detail.

Reflective Essay On Self Esteem
Self acceptance is an extremely prevalent issue that numerous people struggle with. It is one of the
hardest to surmount, for it is something I still struggle with to this day. Overall, my journey is a
working progress as it will perpetuate to have its downfalls to test me. Like many of my generation,
social media has played an excessively paramount role in our lives, both negatively and positively.
Sources of harmless entertainment have also unintentionally encouraged self judgment. Be that as it
may, my perspective has been widely opened unexpectedly through a speaker s presentation as she
showed us how to recognize our self worth. Confidence and self esteem are hard to acquire for some,
but it should not be a quantity you divest yourself of. Self acceptance of all insecurities and doubts is
paramount since every individual has a unique beauty that should be cherished in order to pursue a life
full of love and jubilance.
During my sophomore year in high school, we had a Career Day with several guest speakers. They
had split us up by gender, the girls stayed on the right side of the school while the boys stayed on the
left. We could not enter the opposite sides considering we had presentations concretely for each group.
As the boys had speakers to discuss the development of a gentleman, we had speakers addressing
topics relating to makeup and on how to be a lady. Towards the end of the day, my friends and I
decided to choose our last presentation randomly. As we entered the room, there was this resplendent
woman with a surprisingly cordial atmosphere. She addressed us as if we were her own children; you
could sense the love she had for positivity before she even commenced to speak. She gave us a
background story of her childhood during our age, for she too had struggled with accepting herself
with all her insecurities. She described her several encounters with bullying and how it had impacted
her self esteem even though she appeared so vigorous and confident. I admired that about her the
most, not once did she ever show the slightest bit of weakness, yet she too had relatable problems.
Then she mandated us to indite down the worst thing someone had ever verbally expressed about us,
even if it were of our own

Breakups are commonly messy and hard to get through. A myriad of emotions follow a bad breakup
anger, frustration, pain, and depression is just a few. More than just these negative feelings, breakups
usually entail negative thoughts that often occupy one s mind most of the time, especially if the
incident had recently occurred. For some, moving on seems like the biggest hurdle of all and getting
used to being single again is just as tough. Studies have shown that different events trigger different
chemical reactions in the brain and that the more one particular reaction occurs, the more the brain
will develop this kind of thinking and affect one s emotions. This means that the more one dwells on
the negative emotions after a breakup, the more it will be difficult for the brain to adjust and try to be

I Speak Through My Clothes
I speak through my clothes. (Hebdige, 1993: 100, quoting Eco, 1973) Fashion is one of the ways that
one creates identity. In particular, since the rise of youth culture in the 1960s fashion has become... a
way of defining one s identity or else a way of avoiding such definition . (Gonzalez Bovone, 2012: 23)
The 1960s saw a rise in mass production of consumerism fashion, and has been used as a form of
expressing ones identity; whether it be inspired or interpreted from religion, social status, habitus,
gender, cultural icons, or subcultures (such as punk, pastel goth, hipster, etc.) Crane states in Fashion
and its Social Agendas, that due to the availability of inexpensive clothing... that those with limited
resources can find or create personal styles that express their perceptions of their identities (Crane,
2000: 6); the consumer is expected to construct an individualised appearance from a variety of
options. (Crane, 2000: 155) However, Polhemus argues that Fashion is an arbitrary language system
where things are really what they appear to be (Polhemus, 2011: 49), suggesting that fashion is a tool
used for illusion. Bovone contributes, stating that On the stage of everyday life, the performer declares
what he is... his image is at stake and he is involved in a continuous negotiation with his fellow
performers and the audience. (Gonzalez Bovone, 2012: 72) Polhemus and Bovone both illustrate that
whilst fashion helps to create identity, it is not a reliable

Willa Cather s My Antonia
In her novel My Antonia, Willa Cather, while writing in a sexist time, calls attention to the power of
the female in life and society through Antonia, Lena Lingard, Tiny Soderball and Frances Harling and
accentuates and celebrates the significance of the matriarchal world by use of Jim Burden as the
narrator. Jim holds an enlightened consciousness of the female because, after spending most of his life
with these women, he sees how they started with nothing ended with a successful life. In a time when
women were expected to be subordinate to men, Cather s female characters defy the stereotype and
prove their self reliance and independence with the accomplishment of a prosperous life. The strength
of the female is primarily revealed to Jim through Antonia, whose determination and confidence show
to him that despite her struggles, she continues to give birth to multiple children which further
triumphs her challenges that led to successes. Since most women are accompanied by a male in life,
Lena proves that even with their absence, success can come from female independence. Frances
serves as a more obvious explanation to how females thrived in a non supported environment because
she has the same job as many men, but victoriously triumphs over them. By declining the conform to
the typical female role, Antonia, Lena, Frances, and Tiny advocate to the female character their
importance in life and society, showing that their absence would be virtually useless to males. Antonia

statement, Kempley misrepresents Karl. He isn t a homicidal maniac, but rather someone with a

Shakespeare Uses Manipulation, Lies, And Deceit
Shakespeare Uses Manipulation, Lies, and Deceit Many people believe lying is just a bad habit, but
that is not true. Lying is a part of human nature, no matter if it is a big or small lie, everyone has lied
before ( Lying: Bad Habit Or Human Nature? ). Everyone has different reasons for deceiving others,
but that does not change the fact that everyone has lied at some point. Human nature keeps the world
from achieving complete perfection, and Shakespeare allows this idea to be the foundation that his
plays build off of. The human nature of deception is found as a common theme in Shakespeare s
Hamlet and Much Ado About Nothing. Shakespeare uses these plays to communicate to his audiences
that sometimes in order to find the truth you have to use trickery and manipulation; thus creating the
idea that deception can be evil or harmless depending on the circumstances and the intentions of those
who are trying to decieve. Hamlet elucidates the dangers that deception can provoke in relationships
and shows the consequences of lying. Shakespeare shows his tangled opinions about deception
throughout Much Ado About Nothing by using manipulation to help benefit others and destroy
relationships; this allows Shakespeare to further show his idea that deception can be used for good and
evil. One of Shakespeare s main themes that is seen throughout many of his plays is deception; this
brings more dramatic components to the audience. Hamlet is a play that is solely created around a

Scientific studies have focused on the question of whether there is a risk of getting brain cancer for
those who use mobile phones compared to non users. Two types of studies are generally used to
investigate suspected cancer causes: epidemiological studies, which look at the incidence of a disease
in certain groups of people, and animal studies (Phones, Cancers and Brain Tumors What is the REAL

cause and effect relationship exists between a single variable in a person s life (in this case, cell phone

Cancer takes many years to develop, which makes long term cell phone effects hard to study. For

How can scientists account for the fact that these studies sometimes expose animals to RF almost

battle took a toll on Peter as it was hard for him to kill so many beast when he had killed only one

Grant Petersen Honors English 10 10/1/17 Block 1 Book Report #1 Till We Have Faces (C.S. Lewis)
One of the nation s most recognized novels is the renowned classic Till We Have Faces. Written by
C.S. Lewis, this classic is a one for one first person journalized memoir from the perspective of a since
exiled elderly ruler Orual, who has yet to meet her goals of castigating the gods of her time.
Throughout the novel, Lewis includes an interesting plot that encompasses a strange but vivid course

of human culture from past to modern day living. As for the story s plot, a series of settings, ideas, and

This process is completed by compelling the reader to include themselves in all manner of physical
senses. This will inevitably emulate an evocative inner world to the extent where the reader can have
an approximate understanding of the actual emotions and struggles dealt with by the novel. On the
second hand, with much trial and tribulation does much learning and upskill come. As the title of the
book suggests, Orual asks How can they (The gods) meet us face to face till we have faces? (294). In a
great deal of the book, Orual hides her ugliness behind a veil which consequently causes her to be
contextually blind from the aftermath of her actions. Thus, the question implies the idea that one
should come to a fuller understanding of themselves to shave away their afflictions and illusions. This
will allow others (Or the gods), to have the ability to open up and express necessary material. Orual
comes to this conclusion at the end of the book during her judgment. A long tough ridden journey of
trial and tribulation has eventually paid off as greater knowledge and a wider perspective. To succor,
many of the novel s symbols assist in understanding the characters and plot. Like many other stories
despite the novel s appalling plot, some of the most prominent characters represent a somewhat Christ
like exemplary figure in some given manner. A prime example, for instance, is Psyche s appearance to

  • 2. Essay about Guide to Becoming a Jerk Guide to Becoming a Jerk Being a jerk can be fun. It gives you a feeling of dominance over others; you are more important then the rest. You are the wolf among a flock of sheep; people fear you, and therefore look up to you. Being a jerk is not hard; all you have to do is think about yourself and your own feelings, and forget that everyone else has emotions. There are various ways of achieving this perception of importance; you can put people down and belittle them, pretend you re better than everyone, or just be plain mean, unpolite, and nasty. Sure, there might be some little voice inside saying that you are no better than anyone else is, but you can drown out that nagging reminder with constant insults to others. Nothing replaces ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This will make the other person feel insecure and reluctant to talk to you; the people around you will either think your comments are funny (they aspire to be a jerk like you), or they will consider you rude and disgraceful. It doesn t really matter what anyone else thinks though, does it? You are yourself and no one else; you feel only your feelings and no one else s; so why should you be concerned with anyone but yourself? You are king in your own mind, and your perception is everything. If you can t be bothered to be a witty, sarcastic jerk, you can just be a regular, mean jerk. This kind of jerk is intolerant and impatient (to a higher degree than the other type of jerk), rude, and unsarcastically mean. The next time someone gives you something or does something for you, don t say thank you or show gratitude; you should even go so far as to complain about what they gave you or how they should accomplish things faster. Don t be grateful; if you are grateful, people will think that they can win your favor with good deeds; that s manipulation. You can t let anyone win your favor; that would show weakness, and you have to be strong to show that you are of great importance. Be disrespectful to everyone, and elders and authority figures especially. Respect can also be linked to weakness, since respecting someone can be taken ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Disillusionment Of Optimism In Candide, By Voltaire In the novel Candide, Voltaire satirizes the disillusionment of optimism by depicting a multitude of hardships seen around the world. Candide, the open minded protagonist, has been exposed to Pangloss s optimistic philosophy for the majority of his life. However, throughout the course of the novel, it becomes increasingly difficult to see the positive side of all the catastrophe surrounding him. It is only after he starts doubting this philosophy that Candide starts to become influenced by the teachings of Martin. Although Candide resides in security at the conclusion, Voltaire draws on the disastrous events seen throughout the novel and utilizes Martin s pessimistic point of view to claim that human nature is incomplete without suffering. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In a way, Martin acts as the embodiment of Voltaire s opinions, as the author constantly satirizes optimism in the novel. For example, when Candide sees Vanderdendur s ship sink after stealing Candide s money, he comments that crime is sometimes punished (Voltaire 93). This statement itself inherently points to the loss of optimism within Candide, as he admits that some crime does go unpunished. Furthermore, Martin draws truth the innate evil of the world by pointing out that the devil has drowned the rest (94) of the ship s members. Even though the bad deed of the Dutch captain had been punished, it came with the effect of killing a larger amount of innocent men. Through this sequence of events, Voltaire thus states that a righteous event can only occur at the expense of inflicting suffering upon others. The end of the novel places Pangloss and Martin together on the farm in Constantinople, and it is in this tranquil setting that readers find the most revealing truths of humanity. At this point, the pessimism of Martin has become such a large influence that even Cacambo and the old woman draw similar conclusions about humanity. While on the farm, Martin makes his final judgment and states that the restlessness of anxiety or ... the lethargy of boredom (140) are the only choices man could make in life. • 4. Hunter S. Tompson and Gonzo Journalism Essay Hunter S. Tompson and Gonzo Journalism In the late sixties a young journalist and free lance novelist named Hunter S. Thompson (HST) emerged with a new, crazed and exaggerated brand of reporting. It was sooner or later referred to as Gonzo . HST s own definition of gonzo has varied over the years, but he still maintains that a good gonzo journalist needs the talent of a master journalist, the eye of an artist/photographer and the heavy balls of an actor and that gonzo is a style of reporting based on William Faulkner s idea that the best fiction is far more true than any kind of journalism (Carroll, page 192). Gonzo journalism has also been referred to as outlaw journalism, new journalism, alternative journalism, literary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Steadman s work will be found on the title page to this essay). As the deadline for the article approached, and with the article still incomplete, HST resorted to ripping out pages of his notebook and sending them to the editors. What resulted was the beginning of gonzo journalism. Many see gonzo journalism to be a variation of a theme, which began with new journalism in the 60 s, led primarily by author Tom Wolfe. (The Electric Kool Aid Acid Test, etc.) New Journalism was said to have broken all the rules of traditional journalism. The old style journalists were supposed to take an objective point of view in their articles. The new journalists were far more subjective, getting personally involved in the stories they were reporting. New journalism really isn t new at all. Objectivity has been the great myth of journalism. As hard as media sources try to be objective, they can never truly achieve it. Everything from space limitations (a journalist must decide what is and what is not important enough to fit into a column) to illustrations (this gives readers a non objective picture in their head about the issue) infringe on objectivity. New journalism and gonzo journalism alike pay no regard to the objectivity laws of journalism and instead focus their works very little on the facts but on the facts , as they ... • 5. The Juvenile Justice System Essay 1. Name four problems that existed with the juvenile justice system in the early 19thcentury. The juvenile justice system was subject to a lot of corruption and civil rights violations in its early stages. Juveniles did not have the same rights as adults and could be forced into terrible living or working conditions. With no child labor laws, delinquent juveniles could be sentenced to forced labor in factories or to houses of refuge. With the ruling of Ex Parte Crouse, the state took ultimate responsibility of children and send them to these institutions, even against the will of the parents. Some of these institutions, such as houses of refuge may have started with good intention, but they ultimately led to rampart corruption and abuse of juveniles. 2. Which type of children and young people did Reform Schools focus on working with? Houses of Refuge were intended for which type of juveniles? Reform schools formed to take custody of wayward or incorrigible children that the state deemed necessary. A child could be taken from their parents and sent to a reform school if it is deemed that the parents are not providing a good enough home for them. Houses of refuge were designed to get juveniles out of the adult system. It was proven that locking up youths with criminals was a bad idea for multiple reasons, so houses of refuge were formed to separate them. They were designed for those juveniles that the state deemed savable, and those seen as to far gone would be sent to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Abu Ghraib Torture Essay The acts of torture performed on the inmates at Abu Ghraib were both cruel and inhumane. But what if the reason the guards tortured the inmates was due to the result of obedience from their superiors. The cause of the torture of the prisoners at Abu Ghraib could have stemmed from situational factors instead of the will of a few aggressive soldiers. Authority figures that use persuasive methods can be very influential. There are many circumstantial possibilities as to why the guards treated the prisoners cruelly. Most people don t attribute the torture to many situational and external causes. In this case, most people attribute the torture to the internal faults of the guards when it could very well be outside sources at fault. Fear ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Issue involvement is a type of involvement in which the attitudinal issue under consideration has important consequences for the self (Franzoi, 2003, Pg 217). Once again, fear could have been an issue in the persuasion of the guards. The guards realized that they had to do their jobs and act in compliance with orders or face the consequences. In many of the torture pictures at Abu Ghraib, the prisoners are wearing bags on their heads or something to mask their face. The supervisors of the jail could have masked the inmates to make the guards feel less responsible about the vicious acts. Since the victim was masked and cannot tell who is torturing them, a kind of separation is created between the guard and the inmate. The results are also unequivocal in relation to the distance from the direct exertion of violence: the greater the distance, the less the subjects feel responsible and the greater the obedience (Meeus Raaijmakers 159). By masking the prisoners a sense of deindividualization and lack of self awareness occurred because the soldier knows that the inmate does not know who he/she is. Without such self awareness, the deindividuated don t think of themselves as separate individuals and do not attend to their own inner values and behavioral standards (Franzoi 336). Concealment of one s feelings not only protects one s weaknesses but also helps in avoiding conflicts with society. Many characters in The Scarlet Letter, particularly Hester, Dimmesdale, and Chillingworth, hide their feelings in order to keep their dark pasts from the grasps of both each other and the Puritan society that aches to condemn the sins of criminals. Even when Dimmesdale reveals his chest to the Puritan crowd at the end of the novel to confess his secret sin, the audience is still not told of what is on the chest. Interestingly, the crowd holds a variety of accounts on what was on Dimmesdale s chest. Some say that there was a scarlet letter imprinted on his chest while others deny that there was any mark whatever on his breast, more than on a new born infant s, (236). We are only able to infer that there is some sort of A on Dimmesdale s chest because he tells Hester, Happy are you, Hester, that wear the scarlet letter openly upon your bosom! Mine burns in secret! One subject that I enjoyed reviewing was the comparisons that Enwistle displayed of the relationship of psychology and theology throughout the class text. Additionally, Entwistle offered information that displayed how the two are both designed by God and that God is the creator of all truth. (Entwistle, p.150, 2010).Thus, the author attempted to show the reader various examined claims and tensions that resulted from these influences. We as individuals ordinarily go through life looking at life through our own views of how things should be grounded on our own worldviews. While, a worldview is how a person views the world and the theories that they personally have of the world. Nevertheless, Entwistle provides a fresh outlook for the observer on how psychology is integrated into our worldviews, as a source of guidance and faith. In addition, this is addressed on theology in which, the bible stems from. I found the assimilation of psychology and theology that the author provides, to be essential in assisting individuals with a variety of issues. Inventions during the European Industrial Revolution There are many inventions during the European Industrial Revolution that impacts society for Europeans. There are inventions that made other inventions better and also inventions that revolutionized inventions that we already possessed. A man named James Kay in 1733 invented one of the inventions called the Flying Shuttle. He built it, supposedly, with nothing more that a pocketknife and his tool. The flying shuttle improved on the old hand loom. A worker pulled a cord rope back and forth to send a small piece of canoe shaped wood, or shuttle, flying across a wood frame through threads to weave cloth. The flying shuttle was a small improvement and was still powered by man other than coal, wind, water. Nonetheless it began the crucial process by which unskilled workers could produce more cloth with machines that skilled workers could produce by hand. More than just these negative feelings, breakups usually entail negative thoughts that often occupy one s mind most of the time, especially if the incident had recently occurred. For some, moving on seems like the biggest hurdle of all and getting used to being single again is just as tough. Studies have shown that different events trigger different chemical reactions in the brain and that the more one particular reaction occurs, the more the brain will develop this kind of thinking and affect one s emotions. This means that the more one dwells on the negative emotions after a breakup, the more it will be difficult for the brain to adjust and try to be positive again. ... In particular, since the rise of youth culture in the 1960s fashion has become... a way of defining one s identity or else a way of avoiding such definition . (Gonzalez Bovone, 2012: 23) The 1960s saw a rise in mass production of consumerism fashion, and has been used as a form of expressing ones identity; whether it be inspired or interpreted from religion, social status, habitus, gender, cultural icons, or subcultures (such as punk, pastel goth, hipster, etc.) Crane states in Fashion and its Social Agendas, that due to the availability of inexpensive clothing... that those with limited resources can find or create personal styles that express their perceptions of their identities (Crane, 2000: 6); the consumer is expected to construct an individualised appearance from a variety of options. • 31. Willa Cather s My Antonia In her novel My Antonia, Willa Cather, while writing in a sexist time, calls attention to the power of the female in life and society through Antonia, Lena Lingard, Tiny Soderball and Frances Harling and accentuates and celebrates the significance of the matriarchal world by use of Jim Burden as the narrator. Jim holds an enlightened consciousness of the female because, after spending most of his life with these women, he sees how they started with nothing ended with a successful life. In a time when women were expected to be subordinate to men, Cather s female characters defy the stereotype and prove their self reliance and independence with the accomplishment of a prosperous life. The strength of the female is primarily revealed to Jim through Antonia, whose determination and confidence show to him that despite her struggles, she continues to give birth to multiple children which further triumphs her challenges that led to successes. Since most women are accompanied by a male in life, Lena proves that even with their absence, success can come from female independence. Frances serves as a more obvious explanation to how females thrived in a non supported environment because she has the same job as many men, but victoriously triumphs over them. By declining the conform to the typical female role, Antonia, Lena, Frances, and Tiny advocate to the female character their importance in life and society, showing that their absence would be virtually useless to males. • 34. Shakespeare Uses Manipulation, Lies, And Deceit Shakespeare Uses Manipulation, Lies, and Deceit Many people believe lying is just a bad habit, but that is not true. Lying is a part of human nature, no matter if it is a big or small lie, everyone has lied before ( Lying: Bad Habit Or Human Nature? ). Everyone has different reasons for deceiving others, but that does not change the fact that everyone has lied at some point. Human nature keeps the world from achieving complete perfection, and Shakespeare allows this idea to be the foundation that his plays build off of. The human nature of deception is found as a common theme in Shakespeare s Hamlet and Much Ado About Nothing. Shakespeare uses these plays to communicate to his audiences that sometimes in order to find the truth you have to use trickery and manipulation; thus creating the idea that deception can be evil or harmless depending on the circumstances and the intentions of those who are trying to decieve. Hamlet elucidates the dangers that deception can provoke in relationships and shows the consequences of lying. Shakespeare shows his tangled opinions about deception throughout Much Ado About Nothing by using manipulation to help benefit others and destroy relationships; this allows Shakespeare to further show his idea that deception can be used for good and evil. One of Shakespeare s main themes that is seen throughout many of his plays is deception; this brings more dramatic components to the audience. Two types of studies are generally used to investigate suspected cancer causes: epidemiological studies, which look at the incidence of a disease in certain groups of people, and animal studies (Phones, Cancers and Brain Tumors What is the REAL story?). Scientific studies are sometimes difficult to carry out in a way that can determine whether a cause and effect relationship exists between a single variable in a person s life (in this case, cell phone use) and the person s disease (brain cancer) (Phones, Cancers and Brain Tumors What is the REAL story?). Variables that complicate the research in a relationship between brain cancer and cell phones: Cancer takes many years to develop, which makes long term cell phone effects hard to study.
