Antivenom is prepared by hyperimmunizing horses with snake venoms to produce antibodies. It is the only specific treatment for snake envenomation. Horses are used as they produce large volumes of plasma. The plasma is purified and lyophilized. Antivenom is administered intravenously to neutralize venom in the bloodstream, with dosage depending on severity of envenomation. Reactions can occur and are managed with prophylactic drugs, slowing infusion, or stopping administration. Antivenom is an important treatment but should only be used when envenomation signs are present.
