Activated charcoal is a fine, black powder that binds to chemicals in the GI tract to reduce their toxicity. It works by binding poisons and preventing their absorption from the stomach into the body, making it most effective within one hour of ingestion. Activated charcoal can decontaminate the gut without invasive procedures and is proven safe for both adults and children. However, it is not effective against caustics, heavy metals, rapidly absorbed substances, or certain other insoluble drugs. Side effects may include constipation, diarrhea, or vomiting.
