(especially a house or
district) so that it conforms
to middle-class taste”

Ryan J. Davis. Anti-Gentrification Graffiti in Bushwick, New York City.
4. EFFECTS
more luxury houses,
increase in number of
evictions, conversion of
rental units to ownership
decrease in industrial uses
→ increase in office or
multimedia uses,
development of live-work
“lofts”/high-end housing
new ideas rotate about
what is attractive and
desirable aka noise,
appearances, architecture
Lori E. Said. Anti-Gentrification Graffiti in East Village, New York City.
5. CONSEQUENCES
Renters most vulnerable to gentrification:
when prices increase → tenants pushed out via
turnover, rent hikes or eviction; buyers of
buildings evict current residents to renovate
New economic effects out of reach to all but
well-educated newcomers; industrial activities
(considered to be nuisance/environmental
hazard) and small local businesses (lose lease
due to competition) are shut down →
low-income individuals lose jobs
