Amebiasis is caused by the parasite Entamoeba histolytica and can range from mild diarrhea to severe dysentery. Diagnosis is made by identifying the parasite in stool samples. Treatment targets both actively infected individuals and asymptomatic carriers to prevent future infections. Metronidazole is the drug of choice as it is effective against both the luminal and systemic forms due to its activation by anaerobic organisms. It has good absorption and achieves high tissue concentrations. Common side effects include nausea and metallic taste.
