Ansible Overview
Ansible is a very simple IT automation platform that makes your systems and applications easier to deploy
and maintain. Automate everything from code deployment to network configuration to cloud management. It
aims to provide large productivity gains to a wide variety of automation challenges
Ansible is an open-source IT Configuration Management, Deployment and Orchestration tool. It aims to
improve the scalability, consistency, and reliability of your IT environment. It is simple to use yet powerful
enough to automate complex multi-tier IT application environments.
Ansible can also automate the configuration of a wide range of systems and devices such as databases,
storage devices, networks, firewalls, and many others. It makes sure that all the necessary packages and
all other software are consistent on the server to run the application. The best part is that you don’t even
need to know the commands used to accomplish a particular task. You just need to specify what state you
want the system to be in and Ansible will take care of it.
It allows you to create groups of machines, describe how these machines should be configured or what
actions should be taken on them. Ansible issues all commands from a central location to perform these
tasks. It uses the playbook to describe automation jobs, and which uses a very simple language YAML.
Features of Ansible
Configuration Management: Ansible is designed to be very simple, reliable, and consistent for
configuration management. For example, change the configuration of an application, OS, or device; start
and stop services; install or update applications; implement a security policy; or perform a wide variety of
other configuration tasks.
Application Deployment: Ansible makes DevOps process easier by automating the deployment of
internally developed applications to your environment systems. Ansible lets you quickly and easily deploy
multi-tier apps. You won’t need to write custom code to automate your systems; you list the tasks required
to be done by writing a playbook, and Ansible will figure out how to get your systems to the state you
want them to be in. In other words, you won’t have to configure the applications on every machine
manually.
Features of Ansible
Orchestration: With application deployment, you need to manage front-end, back-end services,
databases, networks, storage, and so on. Also, you need to make sure that all the tasks are handled in
the proper order. Ansible uses automated workflows, provisioning, and more to make orchestrating tasks
easy. Once you’ve defined your infrastructure using the Ansible playbooks, you can use that same
orchestration wherever you need to.
Security and Compliance: As with application deployment, site-wide security policies (e.g. firewall rules)
can be implemented along with other automated processes. If you configure the security details on the
control machine and run the associated playbook, all the remote hosts will automatically be updated with
those details. That means you won’t need to monitor each machine for security compliance continually
manually.
Ansible Architecture
The Ansible orchestration engine interacts with a user who is writing the Ansible playbook to execute the Ansible
orchestration and interact along with the services of private or public cloud and configuration management
database. The below diagram explains it.
Let us start with Public/Private Cloud which is the Linux server. It can also act as a repository for all IT installation
and configurations. The above architecture has a bunch of host machines to which ansible server connects and
pushes the playbooks through SSH.It has ansible automation engine using which users can directly run a playbook
Ansible Architecture
There are multiple components in the ansible automation engine. The first is a host inventory. It’s a list of all
the IP addresses of all the hosts.
Next, there are modules. Ansible comes with hundreds of inbuilt modules and modules are those pieces of
code that get executed when you run a playbook. A playbook contains plays, a play contains different tasks,
and a task includes modules.
When you run a playbook, it’s the modules that get executed on your hosts, and these modules contain
action in them. So, when you run a playbook, those action takes place on your host machines. You can
make your custom modules also. All you must do is write a few lines of code and make it your module, and
you can run it anytime you want.
Then the architecture has playbooks. Playbooks here actually define your workflow because whatever tasks
that you write in a playbook,it gets executed in the same order that you have written them. For example, if
you have written that install a package first and then start, it’ll do the same. Playbooks are very simple to
write YAML code. YAML code is a very simple data serialization language; it’s pretty much like English.
Next, in the architecture are plugins. Plugins here are special kind of modules. These plugins get executed
before a module is getting executed on the nodes.Plugins get executed on the main control machine for
logging purposes.Ansible also has action plugins, which are front-end modules, and they can execute tasks
on the controller machine before calling the modules themselves.

  • 4. Ansible Overview Ansible is a very simple IT automation platform that makes your systems and applications easier to deploy and maintain. Automate everything from code deployment to network configuration to cloud management. It aims to provide large productivity gains to a wide variety of automation challenges Ansible is an open-source IT Configuration Management, Deployment and Orchestration tool. It aims to improve the scalability, consistency, and reliability of your IT environment. It is simple to use yet powerful enough to automate complex multi-tier IT application environments. Ansible can also automate the configuration of a wide range of systems and devices such as databases, storage devices, networks, firewalls, and many others. It makes sure that all the necessary packages and all other software are consistent on the server to run the application. The best part is that you don’t even need to know the commands used to accomplish a particular task. You just need to specify what state you want the system to be in and Ansible will take care of it. It allows you to create groups of machines, describe how these machines should be configured or what actions should be taken on them. Ansible issues all commands from a central location to perform these tasks. It uses the playbook to describe automation jobs, and which uses a very simple language YAML.
  • 5. Features of Ansible Configuration Management: Ansible is designed to be very simple, reliable, and consistent for configuration management. For example, change the configuration of an application, OS, or device; start and stop services; install or update applications; implement a security policy; or perform a wide variety of other configuration tasks. Application Deployment: Ansible makes DevOps process easier by automating the deployment of internally developed applications to your environment systems. Ansible lets you quickly and easily deploy multi-tier apps. You won’t need to write custom code to automate your systems; you list the tasks required to be done by writing a playbook, and Ansible will figure out how to get your systems to the state you want them to be in. In other words, you won’t have to configure the applications on every machine manually.
  • 6. Features of Ansible Orchestration: With application deployment, you need to manage front-end, back-end services, databases, networks, storage, and so on. Also, you need to make sure that all the tasks are handled in the proper order. Ansible uses automated workflows, provisioning, and more to make orchestrating tasks easy. Once you’ve defined your infrastructure using the Ansible playbooks, you can use that same orchestration wherever you need to. Security and Compliance: As with application deployment, site-wide security policies (e.g. firewall rules) can be implemented along with other automated processes. If you configure the security details on the control machine and run the associated playbook, all the remote hosts will automatically be updated with those details. That means you won’t need to monitor each machine for security compliance continually manually.
  • 7. Ansible Architecture The Ansible orchestration engine interacts with a user who is writing the Ansible playbook to execute the Ansible orchestration and interact along with the services of private or public cloud and configuration management database. The below diagram explains it. Let us start with Public/Private Cloud which is the Linux server. It can also act as a repository for all IT installation and configurations. The above architecture has a bunch of host machines to which ansible server connects and pushes the playbooks through SSH.It has ansible automation engine using which users can directly run a playbook
  • 8. Ansible Architecture There are multiple components in the ansible automation engine. The first is a host inventory. It’s a list of all the IP addresses of all the hosts. Next, there are modules. Ansible comes with hundreds of inbuilt modules and modules are those pieces of code that get executed when you run a playbook. A playbook contains plays, a play contains different tasks, and a task includes modules. When you run a playbook, it’s the modules that get executed on your hosts, and these modules contain action in them. So, when you run a playbook, those action takes place on your host machines. You can make your custom modules also. All you must do is write a few lines of code and make it your module, and you can run it anytime you want. Then the architecture has playbooks. Playbooks here actually define your workflow because whatever tasks that you write in a playbook,it gets executed in the same order that you have written them. For example, if you have written that install a package first and then start, it’ll do the same. Playbooks are very simple to write YAML code. YAML code is a very simple data serialization language; it’s pretty much like English. Next, in the architecture are plugins. Plugins here are special kind of modules. These plugins get executed before a module is getting executed on the nodes.Plugins get executed on the main control machine for logging purposes.Ansible also has action plugins, which are front-end modules, and they can execute tasks on the controller machine before calling the modules themselves.
