The ankle is a hinge joint composed of the tibia, fibula, and talus bones. It has three main ligaments that hold the distal tibia and fibula together and provide stability. Additional ankle motions can be viewed through external and internal oblique views or a poor lateral view. Stress views are also used to examine ligament injuries. When examining ankle radiographs, the ABCs (ankle bones, mortise, and re-examination), malleoli, tarsal bones, Achilles fat triangle, and peripheral areas should be assessed.
