What is anger?
Anger is the feeling you get when
someone has done something wrong
to you or when something happens to
you that you don’t like.
Anger Definition
Anger
Getting angry isn’t a bad thing. It’s a
natural and normal feeling that everyone
experiences!
The important thing is to learn how to cope
with it in a healthy way so that it doesn’t
hurt you or other people.
Anger Buttons
Before we learn about healthy ways to cope with your
anger, let’s talk about anger buttons!
Anger buttons (sometimes called triggers) are
things that happen that cause you to feel angry.

– Someone takes your things without asking
– You have to wait a long time before it’s your turn
– You get a bad grade on a test or quiz
– You’re not allowed to play with your friends
– Someone calls you or a family member a name
– Someone breaks your things
– You get blamed for something you didn’t do
– A player on the other team is cheating
– You have to clean up a mess you didn’t make
– You have to stop doing an activity you’re enjoying

When you get angry, you can feel it in your body!

Coping with anger in a or positive way
means that you respond in a way that helps
you and others feel better about the situation.
Coping with anger in a or negative
way means that you respond in a way that
makes things worse for yourself or others.

Stop and think! Before you respond, give yourself time to think about the best
way to handle the situation. Reacting right away can lead to a poor choice.
Removing yourself from the situation. If you feel that you won’t be able to
remain calm, you can take a break and walk away from the situation if you need.
Telling the other person how they made you feel. Tell them why your feelings
were hurt and what you need them to do differently next time. They might
apologize and try hard not to hurt your feelings in the future.
Talking to someone about what made you angry. Talking about your feelings can
help you to calm down. It can be helpful to hear from others about how they
would handle the situation. Who do you talk to when you’re feeling angry?
Good Ways to Cope
What are Goodways ofcoping with anger?
Practicing relaxation to help your body calm down. Think of something calming
while doing some deep breathing. What is something you can think about that
would help you feel relaxed?
Listening to music or watching a movie/show. This can help take your mind off
of what is making you angry. What’s a song or show that makes you feel happy?
Doing something physical. Let out some of your energy by playing a sport or a
game that you enjoy. What is something physical that you would do?
Using positive self-talk. Positive self-talk is when you say or think things to
yourself to help you feel better. What could you tell yourself the next time
you’re feeling angry?
Doing something different. If the way you’ve been coping with anger keeps
getting you in trouble, try to do something completely different just once and
see how it goes!
Good Ways to Cope
Responding as soon as you get mad. Responding right away when you get mad
usually leads to a wrong decision. Give yourself time to cool off!
Saying or doing mean things to the other person. Doing this usually makes the
other person angry and only makes the situation worse.
Using negative self-talk. Negative self-talk keeps you angry and can lead you
to making a poor choice. What are some examples of negative self-talk?
Hitting the other person or destroying property. It is NEVER okay to hit
something or someone when you get angry! You could seriously hurt yourself or
the other person or get into BIG trouble.
Not sharing your feelings. When you’re mad, it is helpful to express your
feelings rather than holding it all in. You can share your feelings with the other
person or with a friend or adult.

What are Poor ways of coping with anger?
Kara and Tina are playing basketball togetherat
thepark. Kara wins thegame and says, “Whoo hoo!
I won! I’m thebest player in theworld!”
This makes Tina angry, so shepunches Kara in the
arm. They start fighting!
