Anemia is defined as a low level of hemoglobin or hematocrit based on gender. Signs and symptoms depend on the level and chronicity of anemia. Anemia can be caused by inadequate red blood cell production due to bone marrow damage, iron deficiency, or inflammation. It can also be caused by red blood cell destruction or loss. The retic index is a measure of red blood cell production corrected for hematocrit and shift factors. Hypoproliferative anemias involve marrow damage, iron deficiency, low stimulation, inflammation, metabolic defects, or renal disease. Maturation disorders can cause microcytic or macrocytic anemia affecting cytoplasmic or DNA synthesis.
