Andrew Goodwin created a theory identifying 7 key aspects that make a successful music video. These include: 1) A relationship between lyrics and visuals, 2) A narrative performance, 3) Star iconography with close-ups, 4) Voyeurism, 5) Intertextuality, 6) Technical elements, and 7) Genre conventions. Goodwin believed lyrics could illustrate, disjuncture from, amplify, or abstract from visuals. Narratives help audiences connect to artists. Iconography and close-ups make artists recognizable. Voyeurism uses intimacy and sexuality. Intertextuality references other works. Technical and genre aspects round out successful music videos.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2. KEY ASPECTS OF A MUSIC VIDEO
• Andrew Goodwin Created a book called ‘Dancing in the distraction’ as he
was interested in the visual language therefore focused on the implicit and
explicit music features. He believed that there were specific key features
that help make a successful music video.
1. Key relationship between the lyrics and visuals
2. Narrative performance through song
3. Star Iconography/ Lots of close ups of the artist
4. Voyeurism
5. Intertextuality
6. Technical aspect of the music video
7. Typical genre of music
3. RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VISUALS AND LYRICS
• Goodwin believed that there was Four main ways that the lyrics could
possibly correlate to the visuals of the music video:
1. Illustrate- This is when there are some shots/ images that sometimes
refer to the lyrics to further explain the meaning.
2. Disjuncture- The lyrics of the music video is completely ignored and
therefore the visuals are contradicting the lyrics.
3. Amplified- This is when there is a specific message within the lyrics, thus
an image is more likely to be repeated making the meaning more
prominent.
4. Abstract- Abstract is similar to Disjuncture in a way that it doesn’t follow
the meaning of the lyrics in the music video. An abstract video is more
confusing as short meaningless imagery is created in order to be put
randomly together leaving the meaning of the music unclear.
4. NARRATIVE/ PERFORMATIVE SONGS
• Goodwin believed that as audience members we create our own
perception of the message being sent out therefore Goodwin highly
encouraged creating a narrative to the music video, as this will entice
the audience as it is interesting and exclusive to the artist. Goodwin
thought that it was crucial for the artist to be the main character in a
story based music video to help the audience have a better
connection with the artist. Also it helps give the song a more realistic
stance and could make the song more relatable as certain people
could related to the storyline. Goodwin believes miming is still the
most popular option for artists when creating a music video, howeve
it is in the artists best interest to lip sing as natural as possible to
make it real to the audience as this is more appealing.
5. STAR ICONOGRAPHY
• Andrew Goodwin again thought it was vital to have star iconography as it
makes the music video more appealing to the audience member. Star
iconography is when the Artist does something or associates something
with themselves to make them unique and easily identifiable. Using star
iconography helps the artist stay current and makes the audience more
inclined to remember them and eventually over time it becomes a big role
in their production of music videos.
• An example of an artist is Michael Jackson, he is known for his iconic
moves, cropped tight black trousers, white socks and his signature hat.
• If the artist is recent Andrew Goodwin recommends to take
close up shots in order for your face to be remembered.
CLOSE UPS OF THE ARTIST
6. VOYEURISM
• Voyeurism is essentially watching something that we as an audience
wouldn’t usually watch, which almost creates an awkward atmosphere due
to the provocative manner being displayed by male and female artists.
Voyeurism is usually the artist making loads of eye contact with the camera
in a seductive manner, Voyeurism can be explored by the following things:
1. Nudity/ Near nudity/ revealing clothing
2. Exhibition
3. Mirrors
4. An intimate location: bathroom, bedroom
5. Television screens
6. Cameras
• An example is Miley Cyrus’ single wrecking ball, she wears provocative
clothes and uses normal objects in a seductive and inappropriate
manner. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=My2FRPA3Gf8
7. INTERTEXUALITY
• Intertextuality is when the artist is representing another piece of
media within media(Films, Television programs, Other music videos,
adverts and branding i.e.: Clothes, perfume, make up etc.)
• Andrew Goodwin believed that Intertextuality was a good thing for
artists as it gave them a chance to broaden their fan base and expand
their work.
• An example is Adele she produced some music for the 2011 James
Bond movie called Skyfall. Also recently Sam smith has released a
song that represents intertextuality as it produces the new 2015
James Bond film.

8. TECHNICAL ASPECT OF THE MUSIC VIDEO
• Andrew Goodwin says that the technical aspects of the video are very
important as it is essentially what brings the music video together, Things
such as:
1. Camera work- This includes, Angles, movement, cutting and post
production.
2. Mise-en-scene- This is very vital as it helps the artist gain authentication
and make their work more professional, which will appeal to a larger
target audience
3. Lighting - Lighting is crucial as it helps set the mood for the entire music
video and can help create extra emphasis on certain parts of the song.
4. Editing- Editing is also important as it is where you piece it together. Also
in editing matching the rhythm of the song to the imagery can create
effective cuts making the music video more entertaining.
9. TYPICAL GENRE’S
• Depending on the type of genre music videos tend to have similar characteristics. For example:
1. Heavy Metal Music Videos- performative, usually shot at their live shows on stage, mostly shot
in black and white with extreme camera close ups.
2. Boyband and girl band- Usually have a fully formed dance routine, Singing about love, For
example on of Little Mix’s first music videos ‘Wings’ has a full dance routine and close ups. Also
another music video that shows a typical genre is The Wanted as they almost mock traditional
boybands.
3. Rap- women in bikinis, flashy sports cars, money, Rap artists are usually by pool sides or an
abandoned warehouse
4. Rock- Many rock music videos are based on horror films so can be linked to intertextuality.
