The document summarizes Andrew Goodwin's analysis of key aspects of music videos from his 1992 book "Dancing in the Distraction Factory". Goodwin identified five aspects for analyzing music videos: 1) relating the lyrics and visuals through the "thought through beat", 2) using narrative and performance, 3) technical elements like camerawork and editing, 4) the relationship between the song and visuals, and 5) promoting the star image. He believed these elements were important for engaging audiences and promoting songs through music videos.

Wireless communication involves the transmission of information over a distance without the help of wires, cables or any other forms of electrical conductors.
Wireless communication is a broad term that incorporates all procedures and forms of connecting and communicating between two or more devices using a wireless signal through wireless communication technologies and devices.
Features of Wireless Communication
The evolution of wireless technology has brought many advancements with its effective features.
The transmitted distance can be anywhere between a few meters (for example, a television's remote control) and thousands of kilometers (for example, radio communication).
Wireless communication can be used for cellular telephony, wireless access to the internet, wireless home networking, and so on.
2. ABOUT ‘DANCING IN THE DISTRACTION FACTORY’
On January the 1st 1992, Andrew Goodwin released a book called ‘Dancing
in the Distraction Factory’ after years of research into music videos.
In this book he came up with a number of ‘codes and convections’ for
music videos- a range of elements that many music videos have in
common.
3. HOW TO ANALYSE A MUSIC VIDEO
Andrew Goodwin identifies 5 key aspects of music videos, that us audience
should look our for…
• Thought through beat (seeing what the lyrics mean in your head)
• Narrative and performance
• Techniqual aspects of a music video
• Relationship between the song and visuals
• The star image (protagonist), having lots of cemera shots of him/her
making them center of attention.
4. THOUGHT THROUGH BEAT
First step…
Look at the music itself, to do this analyse the music structure
understanding the chorus and verses.
Second step...
This is the main voice of the song, the voice of the artisit would be unique
to others and would give people form of identification that can be
related to the star/singer.
Third step…
Goodwin points out the artist mode of address. Songs can be seen as
stories, and the way the artists has told a story with there song. Making
a music video will also tell more of a story along side the song.
5. NARRATIVE AND PERFORMANCE
Songs fail to give us the whole narrative!
Goodwin believed its important for the artist to get involved in the music
video by performing a main role (singer). He also believes its an
important role of advertising
It helps make the song look more realistic, it also helps having a story line
to encourage the audience to watch the music video over and over
again.
The artist acting as both narrator and performer gives more authenticity.
However people have lip synced and mimed actions from some songs
and music videos and have created there own and made them look as
realistic!
6. TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF A MUSIC VIDEO
Technical aspects fold the music video together. You do this through the
use of camera work, movement, angle, mise-en-scence, editing, sound
and special effects!
Camera movements, speed, editing, cutting and post production are forms
of camera. For example for a sad song its effective to do close ups of
the actors face, and put things in slow motion (its causes more
empathy)
Lightning and colour helps set moods and empathies key moments of the
song for dramatic effect.
Mise-en-scene, the setting of the music video is crucial! Ir needs to be
authentic and realistic.
7. RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE SONG AND VISUALS
3 ways visuals promote a song…
Illustrate
Music videos use certain images and shots to illustrate to lyrics to the song
(also represents their meaning to it)
Disjuncture
This is where the meaning of the song is completely ignored
Amplify
Repeatability- images and camera shots or manipulated. Shown repeatedly
through the music video to cause effect.
8. RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE SONG AND VISUALS
Goodwin believed that a music video can promote a song by analyzing the
lyrics. This is shown in many music videos when the actress does
exactly what the songs says.
For example…
• Jump! (when the lyrics come up everyone jumps)
9. STAR IMAGE
Goodwin referred to star image is a vital part of a music video! He/she
makes the music video look more appealing to the audience also makes
it more unique with the way they’ve represented the song in a music
video. (it can totally chance the mood!)
Star image is always unique with the way they… dress, hair style, make up,
moves e.c.t...
This helps promote the acotr and also the song!
