Thought Beats - seeing physical representations of the sound in the video
Firstly, you need to look at the music itself. you must take into account the structure
of the song for example the chorus and verses and then use camera angles, editing and
other various techniques to help emphasize the message these are getting through.
Secondly, the Artist's voice is very unique and can form trademarks and identification
for the song that work hand in hand with the star image. This could also be matched
with Roland Bathes theory of the Grain of Voice as an expressive instruments and can
make associations of its own
Thirdly, the way the artist addresses the audience, songs can be seen as stories with
effective narratives with the artist/singer as the story teller, making the music video a
communication device with them telling us a story and us listening.
Narrative and Performance
Songs however fail to give us a complete narrative, we only seem to get a feel to the
meaning of the song then we tend to make up our own idea of what we are being told.
Goodwin explains that music videos should not consider common narrative and keep
to what is important which is their role of advertising.
A music video should cohere repeatability, narrative and performance work hand in
hand as can be seen in my music video as we use editing to strongly intertwine the
narrative and live performance and this is because it makes it easier for the audience
to watch over and over again without losing interest and also leaves some of it to their
imagination as can be seen previously in this theory.
The artist is both narrator and participant which helps reinforce the authenticity of the
video however it can still be seen that lip sync and other mimed actions remain at the
heart of music videos and their believability as this is extremely important to the
audience.
Star Image
This is a very vital part of music videos, Meta narrative which is a big story that
describes the development of the star over time, it has a very important part to play in
the music video production as can be seen in my music video as the same person
plays the character in the narrative and is lead guitarist and singer in the narrative
allowing this strong bond to form between them both (star and audience).
Relation of Visuals to Song
Illustration: Music Videos can use a set of images, actions or all of the narrative to
illustrate the meaning of the lyrics and genre, this is the most common of the three
relations in music videos and is seen in our video to some degree.
Amplification: This is similar to that of repeatability, meanings and effects are
manipulated and constantly shown through the video and beaten into the audience's
vision.
Disjuncture: This is where the narrative of the song and meaning of the lyrics is
completely disregarded when it comes to the music video and what is shown and
represented on it.
These are the three ways in which a music video works to promote its song.
Technical Aspects
Technical aspects are the glue that hold the music video together through the use of
camera work, movement, angles, mise en scene, editing, sound and special effects.
Speed, camera movement, editing, cutting, and post production are all forms of use of
camera.
Lighting and colour help set the mood and emphasise key moments of the song for
dramatic effect.
Mise en Scene, the setting for music videos is vital, it needs to look authentic to attain
professionalism and believability.
Beats, music videos use cuts to go with the beat or rhythm making the video more
entertaining.
Technical aspects are taking a very heavy impact when it comes to editing my video
together and my group and I are making sure they are used well and professional to
ensure a believable video.
