Narrative, performance, conceptual
Star Persona
Relation of visuals to Song
Technical aspects of a music video
3. The structure of the song is the first thing to
notice when creating a music video, the choruses
and verses are very important in knowing how
many times a theme needs to be repeated
visually or when some parts of the video should
be displayed.
The artists voice is a key element in music
videos, the voice can make associations of its
own (Roland Barthes theory) so needs to be
considered greatly before planning the editing or
shot lists.
The mode of address is the last key component
that helps us understand whether an artist is
telling a story or giving us many ideas without a
narrative structure to follow.
4. Andrew
Goodwin made the clear point that
when music videos are made they need to
take into consideration whether the video is
just repeating many other music videos made
before, this is why our video needs to be
unique and stand out so we won’t settle with
an obvious idea
However, the lip synching and other actions
of the people in the video need to be real
enough for audience members to enjoy it and
not so different that the video looses sight of
what the artist wants to put across
5. This
is an absolutely vital aspect of any music
video, the artist needs to have their own
personality as a musician that may be
different to their natural real life
personality.
If there is no substance within the artists
portrayed within the video then there is
likely to be a loss of interest for the
audience watching.
6. Illustrate
– Music videos use a set of images to
illustrate the meaning of lyrics and show the
conventions of a certain genre
Amplify – Meanings behind music videos get
repeated and manipulated from the past thoughts
and feelings that we have about certain subjects
Contradict – The meaning of the song is completely
ignored which rarely happens
7. Cinematography – helps an audience focus on key
parts of the video to put across certain feelings
Editing – Can manipulate the audience into
feeling the meaning of the song and beat of the
song more easily
Sound – The beats of the music as we look at the
music video are key in ensuring the whole video
looks completely professional and crafted for a
purpose
Mise en scene – The props, costume, settings,
lighting along with many other aspects are
essential in creating an entire mode of address
to audience members so that they can
understand the messages and themes extremely
quickly
