2. Camerawork and editing
Throughout the music video they used a variety of different shot
transitions, these include dissolve to white and ripples. We do not
commonly see these used in music videos but they are affect here as
the whole meaning and message behind the music video is about
expressing yourself and being different which is shown in this music
video.
In this music video they have used cuts throughout the video,
they fit with Goodwin 7 as the cut to the beat of the music.
Linking between music and visuals, the editing techniques
used in this music video vary throughout.
Throughout this music video there is a range of mid shots these are
specifically used to show the locations of the music video. In this music
video there is a range of locations in particular one of the locations
used is a square where people are dancing basically ‘expressing
themselves’ this links to the overall message of the video being about
diversification.

During this music video a variety of different
locations are used for different purposes, we
see a street where people are dancing this is
used to show to the audience how these
people are expressing themselves and showing
how they are different. A variation of natural
and artificial lighting is used throughout this
music video. Another location used in this
music video is a bright tunnel where a group of
teenagers are dancing, this fits well with the
message behind the video being about
conveying your inner self and the bright colors
attracts a younger target audience.
A range of different costumes are worn
throughout the music video by the teenagers, we
can see the main male character in the middle of
the video trying on clothing until he finds a outfit
that he likes, this is shown to be different to his
friends. This portrays to the audience the whole
idea of being yourself and different.
The other costumes in this video include the one worn
by the older genie/ wiser mind we see him wearing a
white suit. This is used to show to the audience that he
is in control and has power.
The props used by the ‘genie’ in the music
video include a magic wand, this is used and
matched with the editing techniques to seem
like he has vanished. The props he uses are also
stereotypical of what we think a genie would
be holding/using. Other props include the
letter/diary entry written by the teenage boy
which the teenager is writing and the ‘genie’
ends up getting hold of it, this is part of the
narrative storyline in the music video and helps
to show the audience the narrative of the
video.

4. Strengths and weaknesses

Weaknesses:-
• I think more of a variety of shots could
have been used, these used mainly mid
shots and long shots and I think a range of
more shots such as close ups to show the
characters emotions could have been
interesting.
• Throughout some of the video parts of the
narrative were not clear to the audience,
such as the ‘genie’ in the start it was
unclear what the purpose of the character
was to begin with.
• A range of different shots and camerawork
to be used, such as POV and thinking more
carefully about the camera angles they
could have used to portrayed certain
characters.
• A good range of transitional effects
have been used throughput this music
video, they used a range of different
transitions and these worked
effectively in fitting with the music
video.
• The editing throughout this music
video is particularly good the use of
cuts to the beat of the music fits well
with the genre of the music video
being pop, the cuts make the music
video exciting to follow for the
audience.
• The locations and narrative fitted well
together, the locations used matched
the message which was trying to be
put across to the audience about
being different and unique.

5. Representation Teenagers/ young adults are represented throughout
this music video, we see stereotypes of teenagers
being reinforced in this music video these include
teenagers like having fun and are lively and full of
energy. We see this throughout as the teenagers are
dancing in the streets. The purpose of this is so the
audience will be able to engage and relate to the
characters in the music video therefore they may
watch the whole music video and like it as they could
feel engaged with the characters. Teenagers are also
shown to spend a lot of time with there friends, this is
portrayed in this music video with the teenagers in a
tunnel dancing and having fun singing to the music,
this may be relatable for all teenagers watching the
music video.
Teenagers/ young adults are represented to be
reinforcing stereotypes of all teenagers enjoy spending
money and shopping this is seen in this music video
when the main male character Is shopping and we see
him going into the changing room to try on the clothes.
This has been shown because teenagers will be able to
relate with the character and feel engaged.

way of expressing them self.

Throughout this music video there is shown to be a controlled use of camerawork, the majority of shots are filmed using
a tripod to stabilize. Steady movements are used throughout and movements are used to fit the purpose of the music
video effectively. The framing works particularly well in this music video, attention to detail has been particularly used
here as there is no unnecessary objects in the background of the shots and the camera shots and sizes vary throughout.
These also link well with the genre of the music video, mid shots and close ups used in this music video link to the
dance/pop genre of the music video. Some of Andrew Goodwin's theories have been expressed throughout this music
video the main one being the music linking to the visuals as throughout the song we see some of the lyrics appearing on
screen. The mise en scene throughout was well picked and fitted especially well with the target audience of the music
video, teenagers. The clothing chosen and the props used fitted with the genre and narrative well, this included the use
of a ‘magic wand’ when the genie was shown this was used well to portray to the audience the story.
The editing throughout the music video was clever and worked effectively, the clear use of a variety of shot transitions fitted well
and the transitions of such a ‘dissolve’ used when the genie disappeared worked particularly well. The message throughout the
music video was clear to the audience to gather about expressing yourself and being different in society is okay. The cuts used
throughout the video worked well, cuts were used when the beat of the music changed clearly showing a link between the music
and the visuals. The lip-syncing throughout the music video was accurate and it worked effectively and well making the video
more believable, the actors chosen throughout the music video worked well as the teenagers were able to portray the clear
message to the audience and also they did there role particularly well in order to convey the narrative.
