The urinary/excretory system consists of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. The kidneys filter the blood, removing waste and regulating fluid levels, electrolyte balance, and blood pH. The ureters carry filtered waste to the bladder, which stores it until the urethra empties it from the body. Nephrons within the kidneys contain glomeruli and tubules that perform filtration, reabsorption, and secretion to form urine and regulate blood pressure. Kidney dialysis is used when the kidneys fail by filtering the blood mechanically.
