Swot Analysis Of Dicks Sporting Goods Retailer
SWOT Analysis of Dicks Sporting Goods Retailer
Dicks Sporting Goods retailer is one of the leading companies in selling athletics products. Over the
years, the company has achieved tremendous milestones in the industry. However, this being a
competitive sector, there are various factors that inhibit the company s progress. This research paper
will conduct a SWOT analysis of the company, and there after offer possible recommendations on the
effect.
Strengths
Dicks has specially designed goods, making their brand be recognized as a manufacturer of high
performance goods that are very popular with athletes. This positive perception has enabled the
company to be a competitive choice for both serious and casual athletes. Additionally the company
offers its services to athletes of all skills and classes at negotiable price range (well, 2012). Also, the
fact that most of the products of prominent companies including Nike, Adidas are only available at
Dicks. The fact that these brands are very popular with customers makes Dicks a popular destination
for them. Furthermore, Dicks provides assortment differentiated services that make its products stand
out above those of the competitors. A good example is the teaming up agreement between Dicks and
Adidas which saw the company initiate a line aimed at the production of baseball bats and gloves.
Also, Dicks was an exclusive licensee of 2014 world cup soccer games and Umbro products in the
United States (Dicks, 2013). Development of

Don Delillo Quest For Fulfillments
In Don Delillo s Underworld, the baseball is sought after as the ultimate goal and a fulfillment in life
for Nick and the memorabilia collector. On the other hand, the ubiquitous use of waste throughout the
novel is a motif of both the byproduct and the opportunity cost of mankind s quests for fulfillment.
Waste, whether as literal waste, wasted love, wasted lives, or objects all serve as a contrast to the value
of the baseball as an object of fulfillment. The baseball Bobby Thomson hit is important because it is
both worthless and priceless at the same time. It is worthless when it is removed from the context of a
baseball game; it loses the very purpose that it stands for. Yet, people like Nick and the memorabilia
collector are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The baseball, as one possible objective for fulfillment, symbolizes the desires and goals of mankind. If
the baseball is viewed in such a way (as a symbol of inherent human goals), then Nick and co. are not
redeemed by the baseball. Instead, they are simply very human, driven by their pursuit of the
fulfillment of lifelong objectives. However, where there is a quest for fulfillment, regret inevitably
follows. The regret comes from either the failure in fulfillment or the opportunity cost (the sacrifice)
of such a quest. For example, an investment banker may fail to ever become a managing director; and
he might never become the journalist he was aspiring to be. This regret, ubiquitous throughout the
novel, is represented by the motif of waste. For example, a prostitute whose silicone breasts had
leaked [...] was unemployed now (246) after possibly failing in her desire to profit from prostitution.
Another illustration of waste lies in The Wall, where children waste lives and pass away in the worst
of the projects in New York. Waste, whether as literal waste, wasted lives, or wasted love, springs
when someone fails in reaching a goal and/or from the associated cost in reaching such a goal. The
baseball is juxtaposed with the motif of waste to show the relationship between the quests for human

The Need to Measure Transit System Performance
The necessity to measure transit system performance along with its different dimensions has led to the
development of a large number of quantitative performance indicators. Nevertheless, depending upon
the specific indicator assessed, one can reach to different conclusions regarding performance.
Furthermore, though performance and scale economies are closely related issues, they have been
generally examined separately in the transit literature. There have been significant amounts of research
undertaken in order to examine the transit system performance, and in turn of assessing the
performance based on such methods but the two characteristics underline the work. First, due to
heterogeneity in getting different relationships between efficiency and effectiveness, system
performance, existence of scale of economies and various such issues, the conclusion which have
come out of different studies is not same. In other words there are conflicting conclusions. Even
researchers are not using the data which is provided by NTD (National Transit Data base) and as a
result the comparability of findings across researches is questionable. A second problem arises
because researches have been using cross section time series data from largely heterogeneous systems
and have introduced a size related bias in their results (Berechman, 1993). Tomazinis (1977) specified
a set of indicators in order to measure the public transit systems s performance. His measurement was
built on three bases;

Essay About My Dream
Let me first start off by asking you a question, do you have a dream you are satisfied with? Do you
think your dream is good enough to make/keep you happy for the rest of your life in the future? Now
remember those questions and keep your answer in mind as you read this. At the very end, did your
answer change or stay the same? We shall see.
We all have dreams whether it s the one you get while sleeping, daydreaming in class, or the dream
you are working towards for. The main questions many ask today is what is my dream (like a future
career) or how will I make my dream come true? These are the questions I find asking myself from a
day to day basis. Another one and the most important question, in my opinion, would probably be will

Passion gives you a goal or a dream to chase after too. Another quote I hear pretty often is Have
Outstanding Passion Every Day! CollegeTrack. We strive with outstanding passion in whatever we do,
whether is completing a homework assignment, doing a sport, club activities, and just in life in
general. Having this passion gives you something to look forward to every day instead of mindlessly
getting up to go to school or work to do the same generic tasks everyday. Everyday is a new day,
which means there are new challenges, by having a passion it gives you the motivation, the excitement
to conquer new challenges. Think of it as Candy Crush, you worked on a single level for days and you
finally passed that level, the sense of accomplishment encourages you to pass the next level and so
forth. The kind of people with the most amount of passion are CEO and entrepreneurs because they
get to enjoy their creations in their business every day, solve a new problem in their business or create
another branch of their franchise. For example, Bart Kwan and Joe Jo of JustKiddingFilms, who are
very passionate about film and comedy, combined their two interests and created a YouTube franchise
where they dedicate themselves to making comedic videos. Another example would be myself. I am
very passionate about happiness, wary of others feelings, tend to know when one is happy or sad, and
know how to properly comfort someone. I dedicate my free time to making sure the people around me

The Innocence of Lamb in Songs of Innocence by William Blake
Songs of Innocence by William Blake collocates the naïve lives of children and loss of innocence of
adults, with moral Christian values and how religion has the capacity to promote cruelty and
prejudice. Blake was born in 1757, up to and after the French Revolution he wrote many works
criticizing enlightened rationalism and instead focused on intellectual ideas that avoided
institutionalization and propelled ethical and moral order. Blake s collection of poem exposes and
explores the values and limitations of secular and religious institutions. The Lamb focuses on children
s naivetés and innocence, but also curiosity in regards to faith, and ideas of nature and God. Though
naiveté and meekness are present throughout The Lamb , Blake focuses on an underlying Christian
theme of combining the pastoral with the spiritual. For example, the speaker, a boy, talks to a lamb, his
beastly counterpart. The boy, speaking to the lamb asks. Little lamb, who made thee? (Blake 1). The
opening query asked by the boy represents rhetoric of both the natural and spiritual world. Bryan
Aubrey, in his critical essay of the lamb states, everything in creation is embraced by the tenderness of
the divine...[there] is no separation between human self, the natural world, and the divine kingdom
(Aubrey 1). Therefore, just as Blake suggests the lamb does not just represent the innocent but is the
principal idea of the poem. The lamb represents unity among nature and religious creation.

Special Needs Kids Are Not Sick Or Gross
Special needs kids are not sick or gross. They only want to be accepted. They want to feel normal.
They cannot help the way they were born. People who have never dealt with special needs children do
not see what they go through on a daily basis. One out of every 10 children under the age of 14 has
some type of special need. Which includes any medical disability, chronic or life threatening illness.
The children and parents both deal with emotional battles. The parents are more tired emotionally and
physically then a parent without a special need kid.. They feel alone, because raising a special needs
kid is very challenging and takes a lot more effort. They are scared because they do not know what the
future holds. Organizations like CEIP give kids and parents more hope. They give them something
positive to look forward to. The Cumberland Early Invention Program is a very supportive program. It
is good to know there are still non profit companies out there that are genuinely non profit . Some
companies/programs claim to be non profit but they still have their hand in the cookie jar. The other
companies claim to use a certain amount in other areas. In which, they never state exactly what other
areas. The Cumberland Early Invention Program puts 100% back into the company while individuals
are volunteering 100%. So in other words, the Cumberland Early Invention Program is actually for
people that need help and not for themselves.

Theme Of A Confederacy Of Dunces
A Confederacy of Dunces, by Kennedy Toole, is a novel that narrates the struggles and
misunderstandings of a thirty year old man, Ignatius Reilly, living in New Orleans with his mother.
Not sane but not insane, this book is filled with situations of comic relief that allows the reader to truly
grasp the writing style of Toole. A social criticizing theme, controversial characters and a very unique
sense of structure makes ups the novel s 14 chapters. Ignatius is found in a conflicting situation when
his mother and him are in a car accident, which leaves them with a debt of a thousand dollars.
Ignatius, even though he has a high education and is 30 years old, he is unemployed and still living
with his mother. But in this moment of need, Ms. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Why did Ignatius act like he didn t care nor love his mother or anyone around him? Why are there so
many different roles in this story but seem to have little or no connection? Who is Ignatius and why
should I read a whole novel mainly revolving him? It was disconcerting at first, it was difficult to
maintain interest but as the story progressed you saw deeper into the intricate mind of this strange
gentleman named Ignatius. You began to see that the lack of social skills was rooted from scarring
incidents in his childhood. That he wasn t a cold and unappealing man as he first appeared; he felt true
feelings for his ex girlfriend, he feared being judged as crazy and entering a mental institution, and he
actually could be affected by the actions of his mother. We also learn that Ms. Reilly was not only
looking for her well being, but that there were strands of love for her son and wanting to see him
succeed in life, in whatever sense that may be. Another very interesting part to the way of Ignatius in
Toole s writing is the dominant voice throughout the story. This can be rooted from the fact that it is
said that the story is a loose version of his own life experiences. Toole s way of presenting a very
disturbing, controversial, and difficult to relate to protagonist, was my main discomfort in the novel.
Discomfort doesn t necessarily mean bad though; reading the

Tupac Shakur s Conspiracy Theory
Contrary to official explanations of key events are conspiracy theories, alternate explanations that

love a narrative that comes with a conspiracy theory, it s the reason why a theory never vanishes. One
theory that never vanished was that the death of Tupac Amaru Shakur. Reasons behind conspiracy
theories are to basically keep the conversation going. Conspiracy theories give people an out to

The Black Panthers were an organization during the late 1960 s to fight for African American rights.
Tupac grew up in an infrastructure where he had to struggle and battle for his rights growing up during
the decades of the seventies and eighties because of the color of his skin. With tension and anger
building inside of him, he used poetry to express his frustrations and immediately found his outlet. His
outspoken charisma brought him attention from millions of people relating to the similar situation
Tupac was going through, and eventually he used his poetry and pursue a career in Hip Hop. Topics
that he explained included using guns, drugs, committing crimes, having multiple affairs, and
threatening the lives of people, specifically against law enforcement and his old best friend
Christopher Wallace, The Notorious B.I.G. Wallace is often suspected of being the mastermind behind
the conspiracy, because of his ongoing war with Tupac. They were both best friends, as Tupac initially
took Wallace under his wing by teaching him how to record his music lyrically and developing his
approach to hip hop. Both Tupac and Christopher Wallace spent a lot of time together before their
fallout because of reports of an affair between Tupac and Wallace s wife, Faith Evans. This rumor was
confirmed when Tupac released a song titled Hit Em Up where Tupac explicitly raps about having an
affair with Faith Evans. Theorists believe the affair gave Wallace the motive to kill Tupac for this
betrayal. However, six months later, Christopher Wallace would die similarly to how Tupac died, but
both deaths are not correlated with each

The Political Economy Of Globalization
Joseph Stiglitz and Layna Mosley both discuss globalization in detail and both have similar views
regarding globalization. In the chapter The Political Economy of Globalization Layna Mosley asks the
question whether globalizations effect on government policy making has adverse effects on the state
of the global economy or if governments retain autonomy in regards to policymaking despite
globalization. She analyzes trends in globalization and the hypothesis of the race to the bottom as well
as economic openness and if government are truly in control of capital markets. Joseph Stiglitz
however analyzes globalization in a historical and current point of view and how the management of
globalization has comparatively helped developed nations extensively more than developing/poor
nations. Stiglitz s supports his argument regarding the poor management of globalization by arguing
that monopoly power created by patents and the TRIPs agreement has resulted in an unfair global
market and is overall very critical of trade agreements. This paper will summarize and critically
analyze these two readings and why both texts make strong a valid point in regards to the management
of globalization and its effect on the global environment. Furthermore this paper will argue why the
texts support the claim that globalization has not only prospered but also resulted in the end of the
nation state because of the increasing interdependence between countries all around the world.

Planet Of Slums By Mike Davis Essay
Mike Davis, author of Planet of Slums, predicts the direction in which the world s cities are headed,
and how the changes in living conditions are only going to deteriorate if certain trends continue. The
title of his book explains Davis s vision for the future of cities as he feels there is enough evidence
pointing towards an exponential rise in slum populations across the world s largest cities. Additionally,
he expresses his opinion on many issues regarding the rapid rise in developing cities slum populations,
although he offers very one sided arguments geared towards those who feel the current system is
causing more problems rather than improving current conditions. This causes Davis to overlook the
problems of slums as resolvable through different modes of assistance such as international aid
programs. Instead, he views aid programs as the root cause of imbalance created during
industrialization. Throughout the book, Davis presents information that confirms his preconceptions
towards the slums. Therefore, all the evidence that is presented by him portrays confirmation bias as
Davis fails to mention anything about the resolution of the problem of the growing number of slums
and instead sees this problem as unavoidable. Particularly, Davis writing, although intended for the
general population, is more geared towards critics who have similar ideas. Instead of providing the
means through which the economy could be improved and the problem of slums could be resolved, it

The Risks Of Teenage Birth Rates In Teens
Imagine waking up every hour, feeding and changing a baby of your own. Getting about four hours of
sleep each night. In 2015 a total of 229,715 teenage girls had to go through this, because they took the
risk of being sexually active at a very young age. The birth rate is 22.3 births per 1,000 women
between the ages 15 19 years old (17Ce). Birth rates in teens have dropped increasingly from the year
1991 to now, but that still hasn t stop these young girls from becoming teen moms. Many teen births
differ by age, racial and ethnic groups, and region of the country. In 2014 73 percent of all teen births
occurred to 18 19 year olds. Birth rates are higher among Latina and African American adolescents. In
2014, Latina adolescent female s ages 15 19 years old had the highest birth rates. There was 38 births
per 1,000 adolescent females. African American adolescent females had the second highest birth rates
in 2014, with 34.9 births per 1,000 adolescent females. White adolescent had 17.3 births per 1,000
adolescent females (HHS).
Pregnancy and birth have been a significant contributor to high school dropout rates. Adolescents who
are enrolled in school and are engaged in learning, participating in class, are involved in after school
activities, and have a positive attitude toward school are less likely than other adolescents to have or
mother or father a baby. The children of teenage mothers are more likely to have lower school
achievement and to drop out of high school, have more health problems, and face unemployment as a
young adult (17Ce). Adolescents with mothers who gave birth as a teen and whose mother only has a
high school diploma, are more likely to have a baby before the age 20 than those whose mothers were
older at their birth and who attended college (HHS). Less than 2% of teen mom actually earn a college
degree by 30 years old (DoSomething.org).
In 2010 teen pregnancy and childbirth accounted for at least $9.4 billion in cost to U.S. taxpayers for
increased health care and foster care (17Ce). Sex education, teaching self respect, encouraging
abstinence, and laying out consequences are just some ways that our society can prevent this
tremendous cost and teen pregnancy (Sammons). Abstinence remains

In The Paradise Of The Bachelors And Tartarus Of Maids
In The Paradise of the Bachelors and Tartarus of Maids Melville demonstrates how the oppressive
power of the upper class over the working class, molds and kill the social, emotional and physical life
of the working class while they benefit from it. Melville depicts how industrialism created an
economic separation of classes that although seemed unrelated and contradictory in their different
spaces, both sustained each other. The upper class, the bachelors, needed the labor of the lower class
to maintain the wealthy life they had and the lower class, the maids, survived with the small wages
gained with their labor. In order for the upper class to continuously enjoy their privilege, they had to
exploit in any way possible the working class. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He first emphasizes how ample and bright the place is. He also narrates how there are poisonous
particles... as motes in sun beams, into the lungs (40). He expresses how suffocating this place is with
a cough (14). The fact that the women don t cough and are used to it is like saying they don t breathe
anymore. He describes the women as the blank looking girls, with blank, white folders in their blank
hands (12). He portrays these women as cadavers being preserved in this cold place, like a morgue. He
says, ...face pale with work, and blue with cold; an eye supernatural with unrelated misery (11). He is
intentionally making the reader feel they are dead alive through the description of a physical death,
then a social and emotional death.
Despite the economic distinction and living conditions that separated the bachelors and the maids,
they both have similarities. Though there are similarities, they only further expose the power of the
upper class over the working class. These similarities bring to our attention the topic repeatedly
discussed in class, which is the power of choosing. Both the bachelors and the maids lived or were
isolated from the world and had no attachments to family. Melville explains, ...these easy hearted men
had no wives or children to give an anxious thought (6). The bachelors chose to not have a family so

The American Army in the Mexican War
During the 19th century, the United States had two armies. Authorized by congress in 1789, the first
was the standing army called as U.S. army. This force consisted of officers commissioned by Congress
and men who joined for a five year period. In 1792. Congress created an auxiliary army called as
militia. The U.S. army was a national force while the militia was the armies of various states. The
militia could be called for federal service: to execute the laws, to suppress insurrections, and to repel
invasions. This two level arrangement formed the basis of military establishment during the war. The
U.S. army was not prepared for the war. The congress authorized 8613 men and officers for the war

The Lesson Of The Moth Literary Analysis
Poets and Authors use main characters and genres to build a central message of their literary work.
Sometimes different genres can be used to build the same theme. In the lesson of the moth by the poet
Don Marquis, there is a common theme throughout the whole poem, what is it like to have something
worth dying for. He uses a moth, the protagonist, to express the theme. In a similar way, Daniel Keyes,
author of Flowers for Algernon , a short story, uses Charlie Gordon, an intellectually challenged man,
who wants to be smart, to gradually build upon the theme of having a dream worth dying for. Both the
poet and the author convey a central message through a protagonist in their work. In the lesson of the

In his first appearance on the show Meyer Lansky gives a very earnst and well worded but fake

future importance of the petrol industry, all of which allow for a good character defining moment. His
main motivation and driving force through out the series is his own ambition to gain money, power

oppression, it goes even deeper than that: in 1931 Lansky has achieved more than he could have

The use of overcomplicated words or jargon can influence an individual s ability to communicate and
interact as they may not understand what is being said.
Environmental factors: This includes loud noise and too many people etc. This can affect interaction

or upset. It may be hard to hear what others are saying when there is loud noise so individuals will not
understand what it being said and therefore won t be able to provide a response.
Fears: If an individual receiving care has a prior worry of the treatment they might receive when care
is provided they may isolate themselves away from the care providers and refuse to communicate with

What Is My Favorite Word Essay

I have a few words that I like and live by , but my favorite word is different . It takes a lot to be

but with our own unique touch.

The First Movement of Beethoven s Sonata Op.31 No.1...
This sonata was composed around 1802, a point at which Beethoven experienced the crisis of
encroaching deafness. From then on, the composer started to introduce innovative and bold ideas
within classical framework in his musical composition to expand the expressiveness of his music. His
novel approach was evident in his formal and harmonic arrangement in the first movement of Sonata
Op.31 No.1. Distinctive harmonic departure from the classical sonata form convention fills the
movement with drama. In classical sonata form convention, tonality is to be established in the first
theme with no ambiguity so as to make contrast with the second theme, which is normally set in the
dominant. In the first movement of Beethoven s sonata Op.31 ... Show more content on

He preserved the harmonic integrity by finally returning to the home key G major (Fig. G) in the
closing section of the second theme (mm.265 275).
Fig. F
Fig. G The return to the home key can be seen as a relief from the dissonance produced by the
passages of second themes in E major and b minor. Yet, the tonality on G major is not distinctive
enough to induce a home returning emotion in the listeners. Therefore, the composer restated the
opening of the first theme in G major and continues with arpeggiando passages (Fig. H) (mm.288 295)
establishing the dominant of the home key. The coda (mm.295 324) consists only simple harmonies
(Fig. I) of the tonic and dominant seventh, reassuring the listeners the sense of finally returning home.
Fig .H Fig .I Employing remote keys and tonicisation seem not sufficient for the composer to display
his ability to expand the expressiveness of his music. Thus, Beethoven employed the technique modal
mixture through out the second theme in both exposition and recapitulation. For instance, the second
theme in the exposition starts with B major harmony (mm.65 69) (Fig. C). With a descending scale,
the second theme swiftly changes to b minor (mm.72 79) (Fig. J). It creates abrupt change in the mood
from a sweet dance like major passage to a stormy minor one. From measure 72, b minor persists
throughout the second theme except

Several do it over opposition, Christ against Culture. Additional do it by regular evangelizing,

multicultural method with his five types of Christian ethics (Yoder, 1996). According to Atkinson,
(1995), the fundamental situation is that Christ is against culture. Culture is viewed as being
intimidating to Christianity in belief as well as tradition. Regardless of the society in which Christians
find themselves, they are called to oppose the customs and accomplishments of culture. Assurance to
Christ requires a decision (Yoder, 1996).
Christ against culture known as the New law on this interpretation the Lordship of Christ does not
define that untruth is the uppermost of abundant powers, on the other hand, that He is the solitary
power surrounding the Christians (GCU, lecture). It therefore, awards Christ and culture as a major
one or both superior; if we take up our cross and follow Christ, we need to discard any faithfulness to
culture. For example, the book of (1 John 2:15) declares, Do not love the world or anything in the
world; if anyone loves the world, the love of the father is not in him (NIV, 1995).

Sloth In Henry Fairlie s The Seven Deadly Sins Today
Change the channels for an hour or two
Sloth (or Acedia), one of the 7 deadly sins in the Christian tradition, can be generally defined as
physically and emotionally shirking one s duties. Henry Fairlie, in The Seven Deadly Sins Today ,
says that Sloth is a state of dejection that gives rise to sluggishness...a poisoning of the will (Fairlie
113). It is this very state that Green Day describes so aptly in their debut single Longview .
Longview describes the life of the slothful person. In the first few lines the slothful person admits to
himself, I m fucking lazy (Armstrong). This general attitude pervades the entire song and the worst
part of the slothful person in Longview is that he understands this is a dejected state of his own
making. He is in a house with unlocked doors but knows that he has essentially locked the door to my
own cell (Armstrong). This is consistent with Fairlie s understanding of the Christian sin. In the same
way the slothful person in the song locks himself away, so does sloth ... Show more content on

Failing to love a good according to its proper measures and failing to carry out corresponding
obligations (sloth) can lead a person, as it does in the song, to seek another distraction, one that
perhaps does not require anything of them. Instead of looking for a job, as his mother requests, the
slothful person in Longview smokes, gets high, and masturbates. Getting high (in my experience at
least) tends to contribute to a state of slothfulness and encourages the shirking of one s obligations.
The masturbation part however, seems to fall under another deadly sin, the sin of lust. Seeking sexual
pleasures in the wrong sort of way and improperly loving persons as the man in Longview is doing
appears to be a symptom of lust. In this way Longview shows the relation between sloth and lust and
how easily one can lead to

How Children s Services Have Evolved Into Their Current Form
This essay will show how and why children s services have evolved into their current form in the UK.
It will explore children s services from the 19th to the 21st century and show how they have changed
and developed. This essay will look at the welfare state in relation to the Beveridge report, the creation
of the NHS and other children s services, political ideologies and policies and legislation. It will
conclude with modern day future challenges of children s services including the five social evils.
Children s services support and protect vulnerable children, young people, their families and carers.
(nhs.co.uk) According to Malcolm Hill (2012), if as societies are to achieve the best for all children
and particularly who are in need, it will require providing them with the best possible services. During
the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901, there was great wealth and also great poverty. Most
middle class children worked in factories and mills; factory owners employed children as they didn t
complain and were also cheap to pay. During Victorian Britain, there were no laws to protect children
from work. Lord Shaftesbury argued in parliament for laws to be changed; inspectors went into
factories to find out what they were really like, this resulted in three laws to be passed. These were
1841 Mines Act, 1847 Ten Hour Act and 1874 Factory Act. By 1874 no child under ten would be
employed in factories. (www.bbc.co.uk) In 1870, the government passed a law, drafted

Cosmopolitan Canopy Analysis
In cities all across America, people congregate in certain areas to either accomplish daily tasks or just
for personal gain. Whether one may know it or not, these places can become refuges from the
sometimes chaotic nature of reality even if it s for less than an hour. The Reading Terminal Market in
Center City, Philadelphia, serves as just one place among many. There are people who rush either by
foot or in their cars to get to wherever their destination is outside, but the moment someone steps
through the entrance, the market itself transforms into its own domain. Occasionally, whenever
someone opens the door, you can hear the car horns and shouts from people who are frustrated.
However, when you just look at the market and all it has to offer, all the stress from the day seems to
melt away. In Elijah Anderson s The Cosmopolitan Canopy: Race and Civility in Everyday Life, the
Reading Terminal Market is a prime example. Through the atmosphere, people, and personal first
hand encounters, anyone could call the Reading Terminal Market a cosmopolitan canopy. To begin, it
may be useful to get some insight of Anderson s piece of cosmopolitan canopies. As defined by
Anderson, a cosmopolitan canopy is a place where people come together from all varying walks of life
to take time to themselves and away from their busy lives. It serves as a common ground for people in
a surrounding area through a common interest or activity. There is no evidence of bigotry or tensions

How Corporate Scandals Crush the Company, Investors, and...
Tracing back the history of accounting scandals, major corporate scandals not only hurt the economy
but also crush investors confidence on investing in companies. For example, the Enron scandal, the
WorldCom scandal, and so on. The majority of corporate scandals are created by greedy corporate
senior officers. One way to create a scandal is cooking the books . Cooking the book is an accounting
term which means making false financial statements in order to meet the number that investors or
banks expected. In this case, Richard Scrushy is one of the greedy Chief Executive Officers (CEO).
According to Washington Post, Richard Scrushy, was a self made son of the new South, a former
teenage parent who hauled himself up from a menial job to become an emperor of the new economy

Having courage isn t the same as having no fear. It s being afraid and pushing forward anyway.
Although spoken by a fictional character, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III from Dreamworks
Dragons, this quote holds a very real truth. This truth is especially evident in the lives of siblings Hans
and Sophie Scholl, founders of a peaceful anti Nazi group in Germany called The White Rose. After
realizing the errors of Hitler s ways, they started writing anonymous leaflets to expose him, which
they knew could cause them a lot of trouble. Despite the looming danger of an entire nation pining
against them, the Scholls persevered courageously to make a difference in their own setting in a way
that inspires me to do the same. In the 1930s, German teenagers everywhere were joining the Hitler

Among the good natured types is moral courage. Moral courage is being persistent in the face of
adversity when everyone else is against what you know is right. This can be manifested in a variety of
ways. It can be as trivial as standing up to a bully or as extreme as going up against an entire nation to
spread a message it does not want to hear. The White Rose knew that Hitler was wrong, yet the wool
had been pulled so thickly over everyone s eyes, that it would take far too long to remove it all before
the authorities exterminated the bugs trying to undo their work. Even so, the White Rose knew that all
it takes is a spark to start an inferno. As little progress as it may have seemed they made, it graduated
into something phenomenal. In the words of Sophie Scholl, Somebody, after all, had to make a start.

Chesapeak Bay and Jamestown
It is evident that every culture is affected by the environment in which said culture evolves. Whether
these effects can be observed in the gods differing societies worship, or by the way in which resources
are accumulated, the reasons are all the same. How each society and culture interacts with its
environment dictates its development and growth. There is no more evident an example of this than
the Chesapeake Bay area, pre, mid, and post colonization, using the colony of Jamestown as an model
for contact interactions between two distinct cultures, and how these relations can be dictated by the
environment. In the period termed pre contact the indigenous peoples living in the Chesapeake Bay
region were known collectively as the Powhatan people. This name was used for the collective of the
Algonquian speaking tribes in the Chesapeake Bay and, during the time of interest, was led by Chief
Powhatan, who took his tribe name as his ruling name. Chief Powhatan inherited the rule of six tribes
when he became chief, as well as having accumulated a multitude of tribes during his reign to create
the Powhatan confederacy. Within this confederacy, each distinct tribe was responsible for providing
military support when requested, as well as were required to provide taxes in the form of pelts, food,
copper and pearls. Notably, at no point was gold objectively mined by the Powhatan people. These

Management of Chronic Pain
Introduction
Long term condition (LTC) is a health problem that cannot be cured, at present, but can be managed
by medication or therapies (Snodden., 2010: p1). There are more than 15 million people in England
that are suffering from long term conditions (Department of Health., 2013). Long term conditions are
more common in older people. The percentages of people of over 60 having a LTC is 58 per cent
compared to under that is 14 per cent (Department of Health, 2012). LTC is also more predominant in
more deprived groups, such as the poorest social class as it has 60 per cent higher prevalence than of
those in the richest social class. (Department of Health, 2012).
According to The World Health Organisation (1999), defined pain as an unpleasant sensory or
emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such
damage. Pain is traditionally described as acute or chronic pain. The prevalence of chronic pain (CP)
is higher than of acute of pain, as it affects 7.8 million people of all ages in the UK (Chronic Pain
Policy Coalition., 2006). The current leading cause of mortality that is accounting for 60% of all
deaths is due to chronic diseases and is also a problem as causes an increasing burden on the health
care service (World Health Organisation., 2007). CP can affect a person s quality of life if managed
poorly, statistics shows that 25% of people lose their job and 22% leads to depression. (Chronic Pain

The Importance Of Kinship In Cultural Anthropology
Kingsborough Community College
Importance of Kinship in cultural anthropology
Student: Amulang Mantsynov
Professor: Igor Pashkovskiy
Kinship has traditionally been one of the key topics in social and cultural anthropology. There are two
primary reasons for this. First, although not all communities are constituted on the basis of kinship, all
humans have a kinship as individuals and are related to other individuals through it. Second, for the
sorts of tribal, classless, economically unspecialized societies that anthropologists have mostly though
no longer exclusively studied, kinship has appeared to be the main or even sole form of social
organization. These observations led various theoretical approaches, especially the schools of
functionalism and structuralism within social anthropology, to focusing on how social groups are
formed. They got interested in studying of how individuals are related to one another through kinship,
and what kinds of mutual rights and duties they have as a result. (R. Parkin. Kinship)
Parkin (2012) also points out that unlike the functionalists and structuralists, cultural anthropologists,
elected to focus more greatly on the symbolic rather than socio practical aspects of kinship. They are
interested in the meanings attached to being a particular sort of relative. They also study how symbols
of and perspectives on an individual, the body, and gender tell kinship ideas and practices. In broad
terms, a study of kingship from the symbolic standpoint has prevailed in America since the beginning
of the twentieth century and periodically has been reinvented and by the 1970s become more
influential in world anthropology, especially in its poststructuralist phase. The field of study of a
kinship can be divided into three major categories: descent (that is, relations between generations);
affinity (marriage); and siblingship. However, the siblingship hasn t been studied as widely as the first
two categories. (R. Parkin. Kinship).
By the definition provided in the New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, kinship is a relation between
two or more persons that is based on common ancestry (descent) or marriage (affinity). In his work

Portrayal of Women in Arthur Miller s Death of a Salesman
Although Death of a Salesman is mainly about a salesman named Willy Loman, the almost hidden
presence of the women in the novel goes all too often unnoticed. Linda Loman seems to be the glue
that holds the Loman clan together, as Willy, Biff, and Happy are all deluded in one way or another.
Arthur Miller depicts Willy s wife in a very specific way, and this is a very crucial part of the story. He
depicts the other women in the story in ways that complement Linda s distinct nature. Although Linda
s role as a woman in society is extremely limited, she is a heroic character, both wife and mother to

Believe In Divorce
Do you believe in divorce? Do you believe it is better for the child or children in the middle of the
divorce? I believe it isn t, because a girl now 17 named Kristina Herrndobler says even though she has
no memory of the trauma, but she still has an abiding skepticism of marriage. Also, in the United
States almost 50% of marriages end in divorce, which means 50% of people in the U.S will either see
the effects of divorce or feel them first hand. This should not be taken lightly because a portion of that
50% are children and since they are so impressionable, being that children are often sheltered from
sorrow and sadness this can leave them emotionally scarred for the rest of their lives . I believe that
divorce can leave children psychologically ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I believe differently, because I ve been through two divorces and in actuality they often make things
more tense and cause more arguments than before the divorce was even done and over with. Divorce
comes with hurt, sorrow, and many negative effects on the future of everyone involved. Divorce gives
children an increased risk of depression, anxiety, anger issues, trust issues, learning disabilities and
other psychological problems that they will have to deal with for the rest of their lives which they
have a lot left to live of. As I said above even a woman now 26 has fears of being with someone any
less than perfect because of what she went through as a child. Research has shown that the trauma of
divorce follows everyone involved through the rest of their lives even if it is the past and even if all
that follows them is memories it is all still negative. Divorce comes with custody battles and with
those come arguing and tension that is unnecessary which leads to more frustration and sadness which
all comes down to just complete negativity. On top of all of that it brings upon unnecessary financial
problems that could be avoided through therapy and even just being civilized and not being selfish. So
before you say divorce is better for the well being go and check some statistics because 99% of them
state the opposite which makes your claims

Thompson Essay
Nathaniel Lee Professor P. Hiebert RWS 100 07 10 September 2014 Thompson Essay Clive
Thompson, in his chapter excerpt Public Thinking, from the book Smarter Than You Think: How
Technology Is Changing Our Minds For the Better published by Penguin Group, argues that the
development of technology of mass communication improves the user s writing and their ability to
collaborate. To support his argument, he incorporates statistics to show the enormity of the production
of writing, anecdotes to connect with the reader s emotions, experiments to support the claim that
people perform better in front of an audience, Stanford Study of Writing to support the claim that
students are writing more than before and history to debate how the ... Show more content on

This is extremely relevant to the topic of the audience effect. This evidence is used to persuade us that
the audience effect does exist for the better, just like when an author posts a blog for the entire world
to view. Thompson used a survey of mathematicians about the question of multiples. He argues that
with more communication, we can use better teamwork to discover solutions more efficiently. The
respondents were asked if they did the same work as another person unknowingly. 31% agreed to this
statement and noted that if they worked together, they think they would have completed the task more
efficiently. I question its credibility because of the anonymity of the surveyors and the ambiguity of
the methods. However, I find the opinions shared by the mathematicians very valuable because they
are one of the best at what they do. I do find this evidence sufficient because professionals were
interviewed. Thompson includes this survey because it clearly supports his claim. I find this extremely
relevant to because it is about the topic of interconnections and can be strongly, positively correlated
to the lack of communication before. Thompson uses anecdotes that are easily relatable and have a
great expression of feelings. One of them is about the experiences of Ory Okolloh, a Kenyan law
student studying in the United States, blogging about the tragic current events of her home

Essay On Great White Sharks
With a body like a torpedo and a mouth like a black hole, it s nearly impossible to not think about this
miraculous predator as you float on the surface of the great blue sea. Even though the great white is
virtually the perfect predator, an attack on a human is unlikely and for the attack to be fatal is even
more unlikely. Being at the top of the food chain the shark has few threats. Orcas and larger sharks are
their only fear. Ironically, human interaction poses the biggest threat to the sharks. They are caught
and their fins and jaws are sold. Great whites can grow between 15 and 20 feet in length and weigh up
to 5,000 lbs. making them the largest predatory fish in the world. Males reach maturity around 10
years old while females mature later between 14 and 16 years of age. Females also grow to become
much larger than males. Not much is known about a great white shark s mating rituals because it has
never been witnessed but it is known the eggs hatch in the female s womb and the pups feed on the
unfertilized eggs. Females give birth to between ten and twelve pups a litter. They are commonly
found along the coasts of Australia, South Africa, California and the northeastern United States. The
sharks like to stay in warmer waters because it s where their prey is found. Although the like to hover
near the surface they have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is because they do not survive, they need open water, they get depressed in captivity and they are
super expensive to keep. The record for a great white kept the longest in captivity is 44 days in a
million gallon tank housed at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Before that the record was held at
SeaWorld with 10 days. Luckily if you want to get up close and personal with these beasts there are
other ways to do so such as boat tours and getting in an underwater cage where you are almost
touching them. So, it s not completely impossible to admire these perfect

Charles Manson Neglect
Other Contexts of Neglect and Abuse Manson s grandparents. When Kathy Maddox was arrested and
imprisoned in 1940 for an armed robbery, 6 year old Manson was sent to live with his grandparents
who were perceived as overly obsessive religious fanatics. According to Hickey (2003), Manson s
grandmother dominated the household with both a stern and unwavering interpretation of what she
believed to be God s plan and some of her strictly religious practices included intense prayer sessions
both before and after meals, as well as at bedtime. There was no drinking, smoking, or swearing
allowed, and Manson was told to turn the other cheek to any violent or aggressive act initiated by
some of the other kids at school. His grandmother also demanded that everyone living in her house
must abide by her rules or else suffer the consequences, and this included her own husband as well. As
Hickey (2003) explains, Manson never witnessed any display of affection between his grandparents.

Adler s theory of individual personality doesn t necessarily account for individuals with two unique
sides personality, which is evident throughout the context and background of his life. On one hand, he
was a magnetic and loving person that drew in others with his intelligence and self proclaimed talent.
On the other hand, the persona he presented to others was not his true self. Deep within the depths of
Manson s charming personality hides a villain, a manipulator, a criminal, and a murderer. In addition
to the many lies that he has told about both himself and his life, as well as the manipulative behavior
he displays, it s exceptionally hard to decipher what is fact and what is just simply untrue, making the
application of any psychological theory nearly impossible. However, Adlerian theory does provide a
probable explanation for why Manson turned out the way he

The Free Trade Area Of The Americas
The Free Trade Area of the Americas
Introduction
The Free Trade Area of the Americas agreement (FTAA), was first introduced in 1994 with intentions
of finalizing the deal by 2005. However, the agreement failed to pass due to the backlash of some of
the Latin American countries involved, especially Venezuela and its President of the time, Hugo
Chavez, who held a strong vocal opposition of the free trade agreement (The Defeat of the FTAA). In
this paper I will discuss the history of the FTAA, about how it started, why it did not happen, and if it
will be possible in the future. I will give my opinion on whether the FTAA will ever come back and if
the current free trade deals will help or hurt a possible resurgence of the FTAA.
Members of the Deal The Free Trade Area of the Americas consists of 34 countries from the North
America and South America continents. List of countries: 1. Antigua and Barbuda

  • 3. Don Delillo Quest For Fulfillments In Don Delillo s Underworld, the baseball is sought after as the ultimate goal and a fulfillment in life for Nick and the memorabilia collector. On the other hand, the ubiquitous use of waste throughout the novel is a motif of both the byproduct and the opportunity cost of mankind s quests for fulfillment. Waste, whether as literal waste, wasted love, wasted lives, or objects all serve as a contrast to the value of the baseball as an object of fulfillment. The baseball Bobby Thomson hit is important because it is both worthless and priceless at the same time. It is worthless when it is removed from the context of a baseball game; it loses the very purpose that it stands for. Yet, people like Nick and the memorabilia collector are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The baseball, as one possible objective for fulfillment, symbolizes the desires and goals of mankind. If the baseball is viewed in such a way (as a symbol of inherent human goals), then Nick and co. are not redeemed by the baseball. Instead, they are simply very human, driven by their pursuit of the fulfillment of lifelong objectives. However, where there is a quest for fulfillment, regret inevitably follows. The regret comes from either the failure in fulfillment or the opportunity cost (the sacrifice) of such a quest. For example, an investment banker may fail to ever become a managing director; and he might never become the journalist he was aspiring to be. This regret, ubiquitous throughout the novel, is represented by the motif of waste. For example, a prostitute whose silicone breasts had leaked [...] was unemployed now (246) after possibly failing in her desire to profit from prostitution. Another illustration of waste lies in The Wall, where children waste lives and pass away in the worst of the projects in New York. Waste, whether as literal waste, wasted lives, or wasted love, springs when someone fails in reaching a goal and/or from the associated cost in reaching such a goal. The baseball is juxtaposed with the motif of waste to show the relationship between the quests for human ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Need to Measure Transit System Performance The necessity to measure transit system performance along with its different dimensions has led to the development of a large number of quantitative performance indicators. Nevertheless, depending upon the specific indicator assessed, one can reach to different conclusions regarding performance. Furthermore, though performance and scale economies are closely related issues, they have been generally examined separately in the transit literature. There have been significant amounts of research undertaken in order to examine the transit system performance, and in turn of assessing the performance based on such methods but the two characteristics underline the work. First, due to heterogeneity in getting different relationships between efficiency and effectiveness, system performance, existence of scale of economies and various such issues, the conclusion which have come out of different studies is not same. In other words there are conflicting conclusions. Even researchers are not using the data which is provided by NTD (National Transit Data base) and as a result the comparability of findings across researches is questionable. A second problem arises because researches have been using cross section time series data from largely heterogeneous systems and have introduced a size related bias in their results (Berechman, 1993). Tomazinis (1977) specified a set of indicators in order to measure the public transit systems s performance. His measurement was built on three bases; ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Essay About My Dream Let me first start off by asking you a question, do you have a dream you are satisfied with? Do you think your dream is good enough to make/keep you happy for the rest of your life in the future? Now remember those questions and keep your answer in mind as you read this. At the very end, did your answer change or stay the same? We shall see. We all have dreams whether it s the one you get while sleeping, daydreaming in class, or the dream you are working towards for. The main questions many ask today is what is my dream (like a future career) or how will I make my dream come true? These are the questions I find asking myself from a day to day basis. Another one and the most important question, in my opinion, would probably be will I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Passion gives you a goal or a dream to chase after too. Another quote I hear pretty often is Have Outstanding Passion Every Day! CollegeTrack. We strive with outstanding passion in whatever we do, whether is completing a homework assignment, doing a sport, club activities, and just in life in general. Having this passion gives you something to look forward to every day instead of mindlessly getting up to go to school or work to do the same generic tasks everyday. Everyday is a new day, which means there are new challenges, by having a passion it gives you the motivation, the excitement to conquer new challenges. Think of it as Candy Crush, you worked on a single level for days and you finally passed that level, the sense of accomplishment encourages you to pass the next level and so forth. The kind of people with the most amount of passion are CEO and entrepreneurs because they get to enjoy their creations in their business every day, solve a new problem in their business or create another branch of their franchise. For example, Bart Kwan and Joe Jo of JustKiddingFilms, who are very passionate about film and comedy, combined their two interests and created a YouTube franchise where they dedicate themselves to making comedic videos. Another example would be myself. I am very passionate about happiness, wary of others feelings, tend to know when one is happy or sad, and know how to properly comfort someone. • 6. The Innocence of Lamb in Songs of Innocence by William Blake Songs of Innocence by William Blake collocates the naïve lives of children and loss of innocence of adults, with moral Christian values and how religion has the capacity to promote cruelty and prejudice. Blake was born in 1757, up to and after the French Revolution he wrote many works criticizing enlightened rationalism and instead focused on intellectual ideas that avoided institutionalization and propelled ethical and moral order. Blake s collection of poem exposes and explores the values and limitations of secular and religious institutions. The Lamb focuses on children s naivetés and innocence, but also curiosity in regards to faith, and ideas of nature and God. Though naiveté and meekness are present throughout The Lamb , Blake focuses on an underlying Christian theme of combining the pastoral with the spiritual. For example, the speaker, a boy, talks to a lamb, his beastly counterpart. The boy, speaking to the lamb asks. Little lamb, who made thee? (Blake 1). The opening query asked by the boy represents rhetoric of both the natural and spiritual world. Bryan Aubrey, in his critical essay of the lamb states, everything in creation is embraced by the tenderness of the divine...[there] is no separation between human self, the natural world, and the divine kingdom (Aubrey 1). Therefore, just as Blake suggests the lamb does not just represent the innocent but is the principal idea of the poem. The lamb represents unity among nature and religious creation. ... People who have never dealt with special needs children do not see what they go through on a daily basis. One out of every 10 children under the age of 14 has some type of special need. Which includes any medical disability, chronic or life threatening illness. The children and parents both deal with emotional battles. The parents are more tired emotionally and physically then a parent without a special need kid.. They feel alone, because raising a special needs kid is very challenging and takes a lot more effort. They are scared because they do not know what the future holds. Organizations like CEIP give kids and parents more hope. They give them something positive to look forward to. • 8. Theme Of A Confederacy Of Dunces A Confederacy of Dunces, by Kennedy Toole, is a novel that narrates the struggles and misunderstandings of a thirty year old man, Ignatius Reilly, living in New Orleans with his mother. Not sane but not insane, this book is filled with situations of comic relief that allows the reader to truly grasp the writing style of Toole. A social criticizing theme, controversial characters and a very unique sense of structure makes ups the novel s 14 chapters. Ignatius is found in a conflicting situation when his mother and him are in a car accident, which leaves them with a debt of a thousand dollars. Ignatius, even though he has a high education and is 30 years old, he is unemployed and still living with his mother. But in this moment of need, Ms. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Why did Ignatius act like he didn t care nor love his mother or anyone around him? Why are there so many different roles in this story but seem to have little or no connection? Who is Ignatius and why should I read a whole novel mainly revolving him? It was disconcerting at first, it was difficult to maintain interest but as the story progressed you saw deeper into the intricate mind of this strange gentleman named Ignatius. You began to see that the lack of social skills was rooted from scarring incidents in his childhood. That he wasn t a cold and unappealing man as he first appeared; he felt true feelings for his ex girlfriend, he feared being judged as crazy and entering a mental institution, and he actually could be affected by the actions of his mother. We also learn that Ms. Reilly was not only looking for her well being, but that there were strands of love for her son and wanting to see him succeed in life, in whatever sense that may be. Another very interesting part to the way of Ignatius in Toole s writing is the dominant voice throughout the story. This can be rooted from the fact that it is said that the story is a loose version of his own life experiences. Toole s way of presenting a very disturbing, controversial, and difficult to relate to protagonist, was my main discomfort in the novel. Discomfort doesn t necessarily mean bad though; reading the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. The Political Economy Of Globalization Joseph Stiglitz and Layna Mosley both discuss globalization in detail and both have similar views regarding globalization. In the chapter The Political Economy of Globalization Layna Mosley asks the question whether globalizations effect on government policy making has adverse effects on the state of the global economy or if governments retain autonomy in regards to policymaking despite globalization. She analyzes trends in globalization and the hypothesis of the race to the bottom as well as economic openness and if government are truly in control of capital markets. Joseph Stiglitz however analyzes globalization in a historical and current point of view and how the management of globalization has comparatively helped developed nations extensively more than developing/poor nations. Stiglitz s supports his argument regarding the poor management of globalization by arguing that monopoly power created by patents and the TRIPs agreement has resulted in an unfair global market and is overall very critical of trade agreements. This paper will summarize and critically analyze these two readings and why both texts make strong a valid point in regards to the management of globalization and its effect on the global environment. Furthermore this paper will argue why the texts support the claim that globalization has not only prospered but also resulted in the end of the nation state because of the increasing interdependence between countries all around the world. • 11. Planet Of Slums By Mike Davis Essay Mike Davis, author of Planet of Slums, predicts the direction in which the world s cities are headed, and how the changes in living conditions are only going to deteriorate if certain trends continue. The title of his book explains Davis s vision for the future of cities as he feels there is enough evidence pointing towards an exponential rise in slum populations across the world s largest cities. Additionally, he expresses his opinion on many issues regarding the rapid rise in developing cities slum populations, although he offers very one sided arguments geared towards those who feel the current system is causing more problems rather than improving current conditions. This causes Davis to overlook the problems of slums as resolvable through different modes of assistance such as international aid programs. Instead, he views aid programs as the root cause of imbalance created during industrialization. Throughout the book, Davis presents information that confirms his preconceptions towards the slums. Therefore, all the evidence that is presented by him portrays confirmation bias as Davis fails to mention anything about the resolution of the problem of the growing number of slums and instead sees this problem as unavoidable. Particularly, Davis writing, although intended for the general population, is more geared towards critics who have similar ideas. Instead of providing the means through which the economy could be improved and the problem of slums could be resolved, it is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. The Risks Of Teenage Birth Rates In Teens Imagine waking up every hour, feeding and changing a baby of your own. Getting about four hours of sleep each night. In 2015 a total of 229,715 teenage girls had to go through this, because they took the risk of being sexually active at a very young age. The birth rate is 22.3 births per 1,000 women between the ages 15 19 years old (17Ce). Birth rates in teens have dropped increasingly from the year 1991 to now, but that still hasn t stop these young girls from becoming teen moms. Many teen births differ by age, racial and ethnic groups, and region of the country. In 2014 73 percent of all teen births occurred to 18 19 year olds. Birth rates are higher among Latina and African American adolescents. In 2014, Latina adolescent female s ages 15 19 years old had the highest birth rates. There was 38 births per 1,000 adolescent females. African American adolescent females had the second highest birth rates in 2014, with 34.9 births per 1,000 adolescent females. White adolescent had 17.3 births per 1,000 adolescent females (HHS). Pregnancy and birth have been a significant contributor to high school dropout rates. Adolescents who are enrolled in school and are engaged in learning, participating in class, are involved in after school activities, and have a positive attitude toward school are less likely than other adolescents to have or mother or father a baby. The children of teenage mothers are more likely to have lower school achievement and to drop out of high school, have more health problems, and face unemployment as a young adult (17Ce). Adolescents with mothers who gave birth as a teen and whose mother only has a high school diploma, are more likely to have a baby before the age 20 than those whose mothers were older at their birth and who attended college (HHS). Less than 2% of teen mom actually earn a college degree by 30 years old (DoSomething.org). In 2010 teen pregnancy and childbirth accounted for at least $9.4 billion in cost to U.S. taxpayers for increased health care and foster care (17Ce). In The Paradise Of The Bachelors And Tartarus Of Maids In The Paradise of the Bachelors and Tartarus of Maids Melville demonstrates how the oppressive power of the upper class over the working class, molds and kill the social, emotional and physical life of the working class while they benefit from it. Melville depicts how industrialism created an economic separation of classes that although seemed unrelated and contradictory in their different spaces, both sustained each other. The upper class, the bachelors, needed the labor of the lower class to maintain the wealthy life they had and the lower class, the maids, survived with the small wages gained with their labor. In order for the upper class to continuously enjoy their privilege, they had to exploit in any way possible the working class. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He expresses how suffocating this place is with a cough (14). The fact that the women don t cough and are used to it is like saying they don t breathe anymore. He describes the women as the blank looking girls, with blank, white folders in their blank hands (12). He portrays these women as cadavers being preserved in this cold place, like a morgue. He says, ...face pale with work, and blue with cold; an eye supernatural with unrelated misery (11). He is intentionally making the reader feel they are dead alive through the description of a physical death, then a social and emotional death. Despite the economic distinction and living conditions that separated the bachelors and the maids, they both have similarities. Though there are similarities, they only further expose the power of the upper class over the working class. These similarities bring to our attention the topic repeatedly discussed in class, which is the power of choosing. In the lesson of the moth by the poet Don Marquis, there is a common theme throughout the whole poem, what is it like to have something worth dying for. He uses a moth, the protagonist, to express the theme. In a similar way, Daniel Keyes, author of Flowers for Algernon , a short story, uses Charlie Gordon, an intellectually challenged man, who wants to be smart, to gradually build upon the theme of having a dream worth dying for. What interests me is how similar these people are compared to one of my favorite zombie movie, 28 Days Later. In both the novel and in the movie, the zombie like creatures are infected with something that gives them an insurmountable rage, making them want to destroy every person in their path. • 22. The First Movement of Beethoven s Sonata Op.31 No.1... This sonata was composed around 1802, a point at which Beethoven experienced the crisis of encroaching deafness. From then on, the composer started to introduce innovative and bold ideas within classical framework in his musical composition to expand the expressiveness of his music. His novel approach was evident in his formal and harmonic arrangement in the first movement of Sonata Op.31 No.1. Distinctive harmonic departure from the classical sonata form convention fills the movement with drama. In classical sonata form convention, tonality is to be established in the first theme with no ambiguity so as to make contrast with the second theme, which is normally set in the dominant. In the first movement of Beethoven s sonata Op.31 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He preserved the harmonic integrity by finally returning to the home key G major (Fig. G) in the closing section of the second theme (mm.265 275). Fig. F Fig. G The return to the home key can be seen as a relief from the dissonance produced by the passages of second themes in E major and b minor. Yet, the tonality on G major is not distinctive enough to induce a home returning emotion in the listeners. Therefore, the composer restated the opening of the first theme in G major and continues with arpeggiando passages (Fig. H) (mm.288 295) establishing the dominant of the home key. The coda (mm.295 324) consists only simple harmonies (Fig. I) of the tonic and dominant seventh, reassuring the listeners the sense of finally returning home. Fig .H Fig .I Employing remote keys and tonicisation seem not sufficient for the composer to display his ability to expand the expressiveness of his music. Thus, Beethoven employed the technique modal mixture through out the second theme in both exposition and recapitulation. For instance, the second theme in the exposition starts with B major harmony (mm.65 69) (Fig. C). With a descending scale, the second theme swiftly changes to b minor (mm.72 79) (Fig. J). It creates abrupt change in the mood from a sweet dance like major passage to a stormy minor one. From measure 72, b minor persists throughout the second theme except ... Henry Fairlie, in The Seven Deadly Sins Today , says that Sloth is a state of dejection that gives rise to sluggishness...a poisoning of the will (Fairlie 113). It is this very state that Green Day describes so aptly in their debut single Longview . Longview describes the life of the slothful person. In the first few lines the slothful person admits to himself, I m fucking lazy (Armstrong). This general attitude pervades the entire song and the worst part of the slothful person in Longview is that he understands this is a dejected state of his own making. Whether these effects can be observed in the gods differing societies worship, or by the way in which resources are accumulated, the reasons are all the same. How each society and culture interacts with its environment dictates its development and growth. There is no more evident an example of this than the Chesapeake Bay area, pre, mid, and post colonization, using the colony of Jamestown as an model for contact interactions between two distinct cultures, and how these relations can be dictated by the environment. In the period termed pre contact the indigenous peoples living in the Chesapeake Bay region were known collectively as the Powhatan people. There are more than 15 million people in England that are suffering from long term conditions (Department of Health., 2013). Long term conditions are more common in older people. The percentages of people of over 60 having a LTC is 58 per cent compared to under that is 14 per cent (Department of Health, 2012). LTC is also more predominant in more deprived groups, such as the poorest social class as it has 60 per cent higher prevalence than of those in the richest social class. (Department of Health, 2012). • 37. The Importance Of Kinship In Cultural Anthropology Kingsborough Community College Importance of Kinship in cultural anthropology Student: Amulang Mantsynov Professor: Igor Pashkovskiy Kinship has traditionally been one of the key topics in social and cultural anthropology. There are two primary reasons for this. First, although not all communities are constituted on the basis of kinship, all humans have a kinship as individuals and are related to other individuals through it. Second, for the sorts of tribal, classless, economically unspecialized societies that anthropologists have mostly though no longer exclusively studied, kinship has appeared to be the main or even sole form of social organization. These observations led various theoretical approaches, especially the schools of functionalism and structuralism within social anthropology, to focusing on how social groups are formed. They got interested in studying of how individuals are related to one another through kinship, and what kinds of mutual rights and duties they have as a result. (R. Parkin. Kinship) Parkin (2012) also points out that unlike the functionalists and structuralists, cultural anthropologists, elected to focus more greatly on the symbolic rather than socio practical aspects of kinship. They are interested in the meanings attached to being a particular sort of relative. They also study how symbols of and perspectives on an individual, the body, and gender tell kinship ideas and practices. In broad terms, a study of kingship from the symbolic standpoint has prevailed in America since the beginning of the twentieth century and periodically has been reinvented and by the 1970s become more influential in world anthropology, especially in its poststructuralist phase. The field of study of a kinship can be divided into three major categories: descent (that is, relations between generations); affinity (marriage); and siblingship. However, the siblingship hasn t been studied as widely as the first two categories. (R. Parkin. Kinship). By the definition provided in the New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, kinship is a relation between two or more persons that is based on common ancestry (descent) or marriage (affinity). Another woman who seems to have existed only to serve men is Willy Loman s mother. On one occasion, in speaking with Ben, Willy remembers being on her lap, and Ben, on learning that his mother is dead, utters a platitudinous description of her, Fine specimen of a lady, Mother (1183), but that s as much as we learn of her. • 39. Informative Essay On Windshields The Drive shared, It wasn t until the late 1920s that safety glass, windshields, were introduced. After the 1920s windshields quickly became a common safety feature in vehicles. Chris Loberg, owner of Loberg s Auto Glass and Repair, is the man behind the profession of replacing and installing windshields since 2003, it s 2016 now. While the safety and advertising in 2003 and 2016 are similar, there are also so many technology changes that made installing auto glass safer and making advertising a little more challenging. In 2003 Chris Loberg started Loberg s Auto Glass and Repair and continues this profession now in 2016. He said, I chose to pursue auto glass because I have worked on cars in some way my whole life. Auto glass was a new avenue that I didn t learn about yet, I wanted to give it a try. • 40. Believe In Divorce Do you believe in divorce? Do you believe it is better for the child or children in the middle of the divorce? I believe it isn t, because a girl now 17 named Kristina Herrndobler says even though she has no memory of the trauma, but she still has an abiding skepticism of marriage. Also, in the United States almost 50% of marriages end in divorce, which means 50% of people in the U.S will either see the effects of divorce or feel them first hand. This should not be taken lightly because a portion of that 50% are children and since they are so impressionable, being that children are often sheltered from sorrow and sadness this can leave them emotionally scarred for the rest of their lives . I believe that divorce can leave children psychologically ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I believe differently, because I ve been through two divorces and in actuality they often make things more tense and cause more arguments than before the divorce was even done and over with. Divorce comes with hurt, sorrow, and many negative effects on the future of everyone involved. Divorce gives children an increased risk of depression, anxiety, anger issues, trust issues, learning disabilities and other psychological problems that they will have to deal with for the rest of their lives which they have a lot left to live of. As I said above even a woman now 26 has fears of being with someone any less than perfect because of what she went through as a child. Research has shown that the trauma of divorce follows everyone involved through the rest of their lives even if it is the past and even if all that follows them is memories it is all still negative. Divorce comes with custody battles and with those come arguing and tension that is unnecessary which leads to more frustration and sadness which all comes down to just complete negativity. On top of all of that it brings upon unnecessary financial problems that could be avoided through therapy and even just being civilized and not being selfish. So before you say divorce is better for the well being go and check some statistics because 99% of them state the opposite which makes your claims ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Thompson Essay Nathaniel Lee Professor P. Hiebert RWS 100 07 10 September 2014 Thompson Essay Clive Thompson, in his chapter excerpt Public Thinking, from the book Smarter Than You Think: How Technology Is Changing Our Minds For the Better published by Penguin Group, argues that the development of technology of mass communication improves the user s writing and their ability to collaborate. To support his argument, he incorporates statistics to show the enormity of the production of writing, anecdotes to connect with the reader s emotions, experiments to support the claim that people perform better in front of an audience, Stanford Study of Writing to support the claim that students are writing more than before and history to debate how the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is extremely relevant to the topic of the audience effect. This evidence is used to persuade us that the audience effect does exist for the better, just like when an author posts a blog for the entire world to view. Thompson used a survey of mathematicians about the question of multiples. He argues that with more communication, we can use better teamwork to discover solutions more efficiently. The respondents were asked if they did the same work as another person unknowingly. 31% agreed to this statement and noted that if they worked together, they think they would have completed the task more efficiently. I question its credibility because of the anonymity of the surveyors and the ambiguity of the methods. However, I find the opinions shared by the mathematicians very valuable because they are one of the best at what they do. I do find this evidence sufficient because professionals were interviewed. Thompson includes this survey because it clearly supports his claim. I find this extremely relevant to because it is about the topic of interconnections and can be strongly, positively correlated to the lack of communication before. Thompson uses anecdotes that are easily relatable and have a great expression of feelings. One of them is about the experiences of Ory Okolloh, a Kenyan law student studying in the United States, blogging about the tragic current events of her home ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Essay On Great White Sharks With a body like a torpedo and a mouth like a black hole, it s nearly impossible to not think about this miraculous predator as you float on the surface of the great blue sea. Even though the great white is virtually the perfect predator, an attack on a human is unlikely and for the attack to be fatal is even more unlikely. Being at the top of the food chain the shark has few threats. Orcas and larger sharks are their only fear. Ironically, human interaction poses the biggest threat to the sharks. They are caught and their fins and jaws are sold. Great whites can grow between 15 and 20 feet in length and weigh up to 5,000 lbs. making them the largest predatory fish in the world. Males reach maturity around 10 years old while females mature later between 14 and 16 years of age. Females also grow to become much larger than males. Not much is known about a great white shark s mating rituals because it has never been witnessed but it is known the eggs hatch in the female s womb and the pups feed on the unfertilized eggs. Females give birth to between ten and twelve pups a litter. They are commonly found along the coasts of Australia, South Africa, California and the northeastern United States. The sharks like to stay in warmer waters because it s where their prey is found. Although the like to hover near the surface they have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When Kathy Maddox was arrested and imprisoned in 1940 for an armed robbery, 6 year old Manson was sent to live with his grandparents who were perceived as overly obsessive religious fanatics. According to Hickey (2003), Manson s grandmother dominated the household with both a stern and unwavering interpretation of what she believed to be God s plan and some of her strictly religious practices included intense prayer sessions both before and after meals, as well as at bedtime. There was no drinking, smoking, or swearing allowed, and Manson was told to turn the other cheek to any violent or aggressive act initiated by some of the other kids at school. His grandmother also demanded that everyone living in her house must abide by her rules or else suffer the consequences, and this included her own husband as well. On one hand, he was a magnetic and loving person that drew in others with his intelligence and self proclaimed talent. On the other hand, the persona he presented to others was not his true self. Deep within the depths of Manson s charming personality hides a villain, a manipulator, a criminal, and a murderer. In addition to the many lies that he has told about both himself and his life, as well as the manipulative behavior he displays, it s exceptionally hard to decipher what is fact and what is just simply untrue, making the application of any psychological theory nearly impossible. • 46. The Free Trade Area Of The Americas The Free Trade Area of the Americas Introduction The Free Trade Area of the Americas agreement (FTAA), was first introduced in 1994 with intentions of finalizing the deal by 2005. However, the agreement failed to pass due to the backlash of some of the Latin American countries involved, especially Venezuela and its President of the time, Hugo Chavez, who held a strong vocal opposition of the free trade agreement (The Defeat of the FTAA). In this paper I will discuss the history of the FTAA, about how it started, why it did not happen, and if it will be possible in the future. I will give my opinion on whether the FTAA will ever come back and if the current free trade deals will help or hurt a possible resurgence of the FTAA. Members of the Deal The Free Trade Area of the Americas consists of 34 countries from the North America and South America continents. List of countries: 1. Antigua and Barbuda 2. Argentina 3.
