Free Will In Sophocles Antigone
Antigone by Sophocles follows an adamant, strong willed woman attempting to defend her ideal
towards death by providing her brother and a traitor to the state, Polynices, a proper burial against the
positive law asserted by the King. In the play, Ismene, Antigone s sister, best exemplifies the suffering
engendered by authoritarian repression and over dependency on the role of fate versus the role of free
will. The ramifications pertaining to the characters subdued and powerless individuality presents a
modern day parallel to the compulsion Syrian civilians are facing under the tyrannical rule of Bashar
al Assad.
During the conversation between Antigone and Ismene within the prologue, Antigone, resolute and
determined, proposes to her sister ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The quotation, I m forced, I have no choice I must obey the ones who stand in power [Ismene, 78] is
applicable to a modern day context upon considering the political scenario and civil unrest in Syria.
Bashar al Assad, the Syrian President, is the equivalent to Sophocles Creon in the sense that they share
ultimate power and authority over their people. The prideful exercising of available dominance over
civilians forms another bridge between al Assad and Creon, which enables us to create parallels
between those facing and accepting the repression. Al Assad s regime has been in power for the last
three election terms. The reason for this is not his political competency but rather his dictating
presence which has terrorized a majority of innocent citizens. Fifteen children in the southern Syrian
city of Daraa had their nails removed by torture as they scribbled anti Assad words on their school
walls. His regime has continued to kill hundreds of protestors who stood up for the students and has
left many more scarred with fear and threat. Similar to Ismene s dialogue and situation during the
prologue, innocent Syrians feel forced [Ismene, 78] and, despite living in a so called democracy, have
no choice [Ismene, 78] but to

The Role Of The Mirabal Sisters In Rafael Trujillo s Regime
The Mirabal sisters or Mariposas, are three revolutionaries who inspired and assisted the overthrow of
Rafael Trujillo, the dictator in the Dominican republic. These sisters at a young age observed countless
flaws in Trujillo s Regime, he was overpowering and passed many unjust laws. The Mirabals,
especially knew that they had to do something to end this terrible regime, so they joined the
revolution. These brave women sacrificed raising their own children and even their own lives. These
revolutionaries are viewed as selfish by numerous people because they left behind their own children.
Although the positive outcome of their actions proves that their actions were selfless. It was justified

The three Mirabal sisters left their children with Dede their other sister, and left to fight for this
revolution. I got the amazing chance to interview Minou Mirabal, the daughter of Minerva Mirabal.
She has grown up to be a politician, and goes to work every day knowing that her free wonderful life
would not be possible without her mother s sacrifices. If the Mirabal sisters didn t make these
sacrifices their children would have grown up in an unfair country. Minou understands that her mother
had to let her go in order to provide a good life for her and her country.
The Mirabals sacrificed their lives to free our country, so that we and our children could live in a free
country. Trujillo s henchmen murdered the Mirabal sisters, and made it look like an accident.
Furthermore, their death led to other revolutionaries deciding to assassinate Trujillo to end his terrible
regime. It undeniably justifiable for three women to risk their lives to save their families and country,
their selfless actions are the reason the Dominican Republic is the way it is

Research Paper On At First Sight By Nicholas Sparks
Number one New York Times bestselling author Nicholas Sparks in his novel At first sight said The
emotion that can break your heart is sometimes the very one that heals it... This essay discusses the
thoughtful quotation of the author. Most of the great people whose life path inspires us experienced
lots of difficult situations, heartbreaks, disappointments. For example: Mahatma Gandhi, Abraham
Lincoln, Mother Teresa, Steve Jobs... the list goes on. In my view they become great persons just
because of their great failures during lifespan. They felt anger, sadness, and hate... whatever was the
emotion they felt, it made them move forward, and somehow these emotions broke them down and
healed them too. They lost something good and found something

What Is Josiah Strong s Ideology
Josiah Strong and his ideology compared to Nazi ideology Josiah Strong s and Hitler s (Nazi)
Ideology have many similarities and differences. Both ideologies subscribe to some of the same social
and political theories and have many points of comparison and interest. First of all, both Strong and
Hitler subscribed to theories of racial hierarchy and social Darwinism. Interestingly, although both
believed their races to be the superior there was some mutual respect between the two. Hitler admiring
the British empire and having good relations with the royal family and Strong referring to the German
Race as one of the noblest (even though living at different times in history) Strong believed Protestant
Christianity was the most powerful force for civilizing peoples all over the world, and he believed that
people of Anglo Saxon origin were the best positioned to civilize the rest of the world. This race is
destined to dispossess many weaker ones, assimilated others, and mold of the remainder until... it has

Dewey s Rational Problem Solving Process
When it comes to conflict in the workplace, it is not a question of if it will occur, but rather a question
of when. There is also a question of how well managers will deal with this conflict and if it will
become constructive or destructive (Hynes, 2010, p. 237). John Dewey recommends using a 6 stage
process that reasonable individuals can use to solve a problem (Hynes, 2010, p. 311). Dewey
recommends first defining a problem, analyzing a problem and then brainstorming possible answers to
the problem (Hynes, 2010, p. 311). He then recommends identifying the parameters of what must
occur to eliminate a problem, choosing the best solution from identified options and then
implementing the chosen solution (Hynes, 2010, p. 311).
Dewey s Rational Problem Solving Process The conflict described in Case 10 1 is a classic case of a
non managerial employee being pulled in multiple directions by managerial employees. Rankin, a non
managerial employee in the Credit department, often helps Sims, the manager of Accounting (Hynes,
2010, p. 238). However, sales have been increasing so Rankin has not been able to help Sims as often
as she previously had been because she has also needed to assist the Sales department (Hynes, 2010,
p. 238). As a result, Sims approached Martinez, the manager of Sales, and told him that she needed
Rankin s assistance more than he needed her help in assisting the Sales department (Hynes, 2010, p.
238). Basically, a conflict over a resource ensued

Camping At Devils Lake
The vibrant greens, the hastening winds through the trees, the mosquitoes biting where mosquito spray
is lacking, and the raccoons stealing the last box of lucky charms, these are some of the joys
experienced in the great outdoors. The outdoors is one of my favorite get away locations. From before
my adolescence to this day, I am an outdoorsman: From camping at Devils Lake, to canoeing the
Canadian Boundary Waters, and even sailing the Florida Keys. Camping is enjoyable for me because
it is a place of freedom, a place of relaxation, and a place where I can create memories with my family
and friends. The secluded outdoors, away from cities, is a place broken away from the chains of
society. Though campgrounds still have rules, the rules instituted our quite lax in both definition and
enforcement. People can often do a lot more in a campground or in nature reserves than in cities or
even towns. A minor example of this would be the use of bicycles, in a city bicycles need to ride in the
bike lane on the right side of the road, however in a campground you can ride the bike on the road or
take it off road onto the trails and explore. Though most campgrounds have rules on where you can
ride your bike, the rules are not very strict nor are they very enforced. Since there is only a minute
amount of people you encounter while camping it also allows you the freedom of doing whatever you
want without the judgmental eyes of society laying upon you. I enjoy the lack of judgment

many records of floods in the past and some very minor earthquakes. There are still dangers of floods
and earthquakes, and many people live on the fault line, where it is expected to have a huge
earthquake in about 50 years. This large earthquake could destroy many homes and neighborhoods
and will cost the city a substantial amount of money to repair all of the damages.
Growth over time and space Population has increased a lot in Sandy. There were a few people in the
1900s, when the city was still developing. But ever since, the population has boomed. Sandy
experienced its biggest growth in 1970 1980, when the population increased 711%[5].

Here is a projection for future population trends in Sandy. It is expected that population growth will
expand steadily. By 2060, the population in Sandy would increase to over 145,000.

coming to Sandy because it is a safe place to raise their children. There is a lot of economic

How Sugar Affects The Melting Rate Of Ice Research
The Effect of Sugar On The Melting Rate Of Ice.
Abstract:
The melting rate of each type of ice cube was different, depending on whether they had sugar in them
or not. One type of ice cube contained sugar, where the other one didn t, and as a result, the lowering
of the freezing point of the water seemed to be affected by the sugar.
Introduction:
I conducted this experiment to see whether sugar would cause the ice cube to melt faster. There were
two different types of ice cubes; just pure water, and water that contained sugar.
Liquid water contains molecules that are disordered and jumbled, but when it is frozen, the molecules
become ordered and regular. The sugar molecules don t fit into this, so when you freeze the water, the
water freezes first and the sugar stays behind in the liquid part as the ice develops. Sugar makes the
ice harder to form, therefore lowering the freezing point. By lowering the freezing point, it keeps the
ice from re freezing as easily, helping to melt the rest of the ice. ... Show more content on

The only dependent variable is the time the ice cubes take to melt. The controlled variables are the
size of the ice cube, and the room conditions they melted in.
Aim:
To see which type of ice cube melts faster (the one with or without sugar).
Hypothesis:
If the sugar in the ice cubes will cause the ice cubes to melt quicker than the ones without it.
Equipment:
 1 tablespoon (20 g) White Sugar
 280 ml of water (this needed to be divided in half for the different types of ice cubes, so 140 ml for
each ice tray and 10 ml for each cube)

The Downfall Of The Lehman Brothers
Part A
On September 15, 2008, the infamous investment bank Lehman Brothers was forced to file for
Chapter 11 bankruptcy by the federal court. The firm was entangled in risky business that ultimately
led to its demise because they did not take reasonable care to avoid acts that were foreseeably
damaging to the United States economy.
Established in the United States, Henry Lehman and his brothers, Mayer and Emanuel, formed a
partnership to start a general merchandising business together naming it Lehman Brothers. Soon after
its founding, the Lehman Brothers marked their evolution by turning into a global financial service
firm. The firm grew to be a major player in the financial history of the country, rapidly prospering to
be the fourth largest modern investment and brokerage bank corporation. The Lehman Brothers held a
policy until the 1920 s that only family members were permitted to form legal partnerships among this
firm, then eventually branched off allowing other key members to be carried into the business.
Lehman Brothers continued to develop their financial strategies and invested heavily into the
mortgage market. Once the firm became a practitioner for mortgages, the inflating housing market
became an appealing investment. Consequently, Lehman purchased five mortgage lenders one of
which included BNC Mortgage, a subprime mortgage lender. These mortgages were offered to people
who may not have the finest credit rating or the ability to carry the mortgage should rate

Comparing Augustine de Hippo and Mohammed to the Idea of a...
Greek and Roman cultural values pervaded the Western religious society and made it possible for a
series of Christian and Muslim religious individuals to be associated with historic figures present in
Ancient Greece and Rome. While the modern society has a different understanding of the concept of
the traditional hero, society during the early centuries perceived heroes as being individuals who
possessed a series of attributes related to religious ideas and to a general attitude that promoted moral
behavior. Individuals like Augustine de Hippo and Mohammed have come to be seen as having
several attributes that linked them to the idea of the classic Greek hero.
It is surely surprising that religion has adopted a pagan Greek term with the purpose of trying to
describe some of its most notable figures. It is not necessarily that Augustine de Hippo and
Mohammed were considered to possess superhuman abilities, as people came to associate them with
heroes because they were dedicated to assisting the masses and because they were predisposed to
doing good.
In addition to being perceived as one of the most important attributes in a saint, heroism actually
started to be praised by Christians as one of the principal qualities in any true Christian. Augustine de
Hippo basically believed that in order to be seen by God as a person who was capable to serve
divinity, the respective individual needed to be familiar with the attitudes that he or she needed to put
across and with the fact

People lost their life s savings, their homes and farms. In his first broadcast on the radio Roosevelt
speech, declared that This great Nation will endure as it has endured , we will revive and will prosper
the only thing we have to fear is fear itself . Heeding the nation to call for action, and action now he
promise to exercise broad executive power to wage a war against the emergency. The first step was to
save the banks. During his first hundred days as president, FDR ordered all banks to closed to stop
people from withdrawing money from the banks, until congress meeting into special session. On
March 9 congress passed Roosevelt s Emergency Banking Act, in which recognized the banks and
closed the ones there were insolvent. Banks would re open immediately with government support, and
the ones that were insolvent would be handed over to federal conservators who would guide them to

A Website On Air Pollution
Our proposal is to create a website that encourages people to learn about how to use their car
efficiently. Our website is called Greenriding and there are some games and quizzes that teach you
about air pollution. During this game you earn points and you can trade it in for coupons and the
coupon is sent to the person by email, and comes in a printable PDF. These coupons can be traded in
for things that help air pollution (free smog checks, free tire inflation, free shuttle rides, and free tune
ups). The reason our proposal is mainly focused on learning lessons, to earn points, to get coupons, is
because actually keeping your car in good shape is a huge impact on the environment. Also getting
your car checked out, and fixed soon after your engine light goes on, can improve your mileage by
more than 30%. The second part of Greenriding is a car and shuttle system called Greenrides. You can
either rent a shuttle bus for multiple people, or you could rent an individual car for just a few people.
To become a member of the Greenrides program, you pay $25 per year. You get the individual car
rides for free, but would still pay $10 per shuttle ride. We the car manufactures are concerned that the
next generation of drivers will not be educated enough on air pollution. They should be able to learn
about air pollution for a small price. Your car is designed to run at an optimal efficiency, however
time, distance, and weather, contribute to decreasing that efficiency. Routine

Gallipoli Research Paper
The average Indian is almost ignorant about Gallipoli as a campaign in World War I, retired Indian Air
Force wing commander Rana Chhina said in a 2015 ABC article. The average Australian however,
may think they have learnt every last detail of the campaign before they ve even graduated high
school. When one thinks of the ANZAC legend, they think of thousands of strapping, fit, young, white
lads going off to the war to fight for King and country. Seldom does one think of the 15,000 Indian
men fighting alongside those. Neither does one contemplate just how much... nor perhaps how little
the ANZAC legend means to the Indian population in Australia because of this disregard. It is

Professor Stanley claims that the number was in excess of 15,000 in his new book. Those numbers are
comparable to the 20,000 ANZAC soldiers who fought at Gallipoli. According to updated records at

them, approximately 10% of the serving Indian militia also died, 3,500 wounded. And yet, Mr. Chhina
says that the only recognition in India of the 15,000 that fought and 1,500 that died is but a small

Literary Criticism In Cardinal Richelieu
Alfredo Camacho
Dr. Fontes
CLAS 5
3 October 2017
Book Review Poetry is a form of art that serves the purpose to express the writer s opinions, and also
combat oppressive forces without the use of any physical force. These writers can relate to the
expression by the playwright and novelist Edward Bulwer Lytton in the play Cardinal Richelieu, The
pen is mightier than the sword (BBC); this expression serves as a metaphor in its own right as the
nature describes the effect of words to provide a stronger impact on the intended audience than any
kind of violence would. This term ties in perfectly with the ideas of Chicanx; the Chicanx perspective
of life is oppression and the dangers of racial tensions and manners to dethrone those who impose that
on others. They have long fought against the unfair forces that have come against them, and have been
involved in many violent forms of protest. With Cesar Chavez becoming more invested in the peaceful
form of protesting to gain trust and momentum in the campaigns they were in, more and more writers

Puerto Rican And American Culture
Puerto Rican has always been an area of interest to America, and United States government has had
dealings with them over the past hundred or so years. Puerto Rico is a small island off the coast of the
more southeast tip of the United States right below the tip of Florida. The island is located in the
caribbean sea and is among an island chain of different islands like Jamaica, Cuba, and the island of
Haiti. Puerto Rico just like many other territory in the caribbean sea became under United States
control in one way or another starting in the early 1900s. The United States saw Puerto Rican, as a
desirable possession given its strategic location, potential markets, and agricultural possibilities.
(Scupin, p209) The Puerto Rican American people faced many challenges and accomplishments when
they first came to America; there contributions to American culture are vast, and there immigration
history is full of stores of hardship and togetherness.
The Puerto Rican people just like the Mexican American people became part of America s by
conquest and not by choice. Business dealing with Puerto Rican seemed to shape its history with the
United States, and was the main reason for Puerto Rican becoming a United State territory. Once
settled on the mainland Puerto Ricans had to deal with prejuect and missunderstandings due to fact
that they spoke spanish, but were not from Mexcio. Because Puerto Ricans call themselves Hispanics
or Latinos, they group themselves with Mexicans,

Overcoming Resilience
To overcome an obstacle, one must have some essence of resilience within. Resilience has been
defined as an attitude that enables the individual to examine, enhance and utilize the strengths,
characteristics and other resources available to him or her (Harrington, 2012). As a gunner in the
military for a Bradley Fighting Vehicle, you are responsible for the turret and weapon system. Having
never been a Bradley Commander, when asked to step up and take command I felt overwhelmed with
the task at hand. Without being resilient, I would have failed as a Brandley Commander. My first day
at the job, I met with my new crew and explained that we are going to have strict standards and that
my intent is to become a top performing crew in our platoon.

Comparing Frankenstein And Frankendoodle And Frankenstein
Frankenstein is a classic science fiction novel written by Mary Shelley, through the ages many
adaptations have taken the story through various forms of popular culture. Spongebob Squarepants, a
popular children s television show often alludes to classic literature, and makes it entertaining for all
ages. While this example is quite comical, it does hold classical elements associated with
Frankenstein, but takes a spin on the classic science fiction novel. In this essay I will consider the
similarities and difference between the two texts; Frankendoodle as well as Frankenstein . By looking
at the allusion apparent in Frankendoodle , it is clear to see that many of the more popularized
characteristics are found throughout the text, such as; a name given to the creature, the creature being
aggressive thoughtless monster, and the creator having a sidekick. Fundamentally, the idea of a
creature being born into this world through unconventional means is clearly demonstrated in both
texts. Frankendoodle shadows Mary Shelley s original text, Frankenstein but allows it to highlight the
Frankenstein that was born through many forms of popular culture.
Spongebob Squarepants is a children s television show that aired periodically from the early 1990 s
into 2010. It s production takes place in Nickelodeon Studios by main producer, Stephen Hillenburg.

Persuasive Essay On Second Hand Smoke
Second hand smoke, what is it? Can it cause health problems? Will second hand smoke affect my
children? The answer is yes. People that smoke in public can cause a number of health issues.
Everywhere in the world people smoke, and the smell of smoke is so familiar now that some people
do not even notice it. Statistics show that nonsmokers chance of getting lung cancer and having
strokes increases by twenty to thirty percent when around cigarette smoke. Even the healthiest person
in the world can have major health problems being around smokers. People should not be able to
smoke in public because it is putting everyone at risk.
Everywhere you go you see someone smoking or smell it and everyone that is standing or walking by
that person gets a higher chance of getting sick. Smoking is so addictive that the people that smoke do
not care who they are around they just want a cigarette. The 360 billion cigarettes smoked in the
United States in 2007 translates to a total of 135,000,000 pounds of discarded butts in one year in the
United States alone ( Cigarette Litter ). The number is only increasing, that data was from ten years
ago so imagine how many cigarettes are smoked today. More than 16 million Americans live with a
smoking related disease. ( Current Cigarette smoking Among Adults in the United States ). Smoking is
definitely bad for the person doing it but it is just as bad for the people around it.
So how can we stop this smoking epidemic? We can raise prices on

The Environmental Hazards Of The United States
A common sight to a visitor on a beach in the U.S. is garbage that has been pitched by another person
or washed up on the beach, after it has been carelessly thrown away. All the carelessly disposed of
trash eventually accumulates, rather it be in one place, such as a landfill, or in many places just
dispersed and spread out, like litter. In 1997, Captain Charles Moore came across a large trash deposit,
while sailing in his boat, Alguita, in the pacific. What he encountered that day could only be described
as a floating continent of trash, which today has names such as trash vortex , plastic soup , and Eastern
Garbage Patch (Friedman 7 10). The mass of trash is still present today and is calculated to be twice
the size of the U.S., weighing in at around 100 million tons of trash (Friedman 7). This garbage patch
is one of the leading growing environmental hazards of the world today. The trash has been linked to
cancer, caused by the toxins released in the water from the plastics, the killing of seabirds, and the
killing of more than a 100,000 marine mammals each year (Friedman 9). This is one of the negative
effects human trash is having on the planet and how people are now turning to recycling to help
resolve problems similar to this. Today people in the U.S. alone produce 245 million tons of trash a
year, which helps contribute to problems like the trash vortex (Lazarus 13). Recycling would help cut
this trash flow significantly, while having other positive effects, if

Psychoanalysis As A Form Of Therapy
Psychoanalysis is a form of therapy that has been used for years. It offers a way to investigate the
unconscious elements of the mind as well as bring repressed memories back into the conscious mind.
My German Question is a memoir written by an assimilated Jew that probes his childhood between
the years of 1933 1939 in Nazi Germany. Throughout Peter s experience in Nazi Germany, he used
different tactics to try to cope with the trauma. Peter said I had developed strategies for survival
designed to keep me as sane as possible in the madhouse into which the accident of birth and the
perversity of history had thrown me (Gay, 94). These coping mechanisms included hobbies, such as
watching sports and stamp collecting, as well as indulgences, such as chocolate and books from his
parents locked cabinet full of sexually informative readings. However, Peter s most commonly used
method was psychoanalysis. He relied on the ideas of Sigmund Freud and psychology to try to
comprehend his thoughts and feelings. Peter s use of psychology to analyze his experience was a very
effective approach to cope under brutal dictational rule. The very first exposed act of psychoanalysis
in Peter s memoir was when he visited Germany for the first time after leaving to America. His first
interaction was with a woman checking passports. Peter s first thoughts were A glance at her had left
no doubt in my mind: murderous anti Semitism was alive and flourishing in my native land (Gay, 5).

Non verbal cues are those expressions of emotions and attitudes toward another person and in

includes good examples, including: environment, proximity, posture, gestures, facial expressions, eye
behavior and vocalics.
One area missing within communications chapter was what the person is wearing, but was included in
chapter 6, perception and performance evaluations. Many books advocate dressing for success. Some
examples include shopping, salesperson and the office. If you are going to shop at flea markets,
dressing down is a good way to start the bargaining process. A car salesperson should dress to show
that he is successful, but not ostentatious.
In my profession, I dress towards the client based on whether suit and tie or casual are the choice for
the client s organization. This non verbal cue can aid in preparing the initial psychological base for the
remainder of the conversation and ensure that it does not detract from the conversation while it is
ongoing.

Boxing Should Not be Banned Essay
Boxing Should Not be Banned In recent years, there have been many campaigns to try and have
boxing banned. Those in favour of banning boxing argue that it is dangerous, potentially life
threatening and generally unsafe. It can also be argued that it is immoral to give someone money for
fighting with someone else. Those who are against boxing being banned argue that it is no more
dangerous than other sports. In this essay, I will critically examine each of these arguments and

All boxers obviously believe that the benefits of the ancient sport outweigh its negative side. This is
shown in their enthusiasm to take potentially high risks in order to gain the rewards of winning. Like
all sports, there is an element of danger involved however we have the freedom to decide whether or
not to take part in it.
One of the main arguments for boxing being banned is that serious medical injury can result from
boxing due to continuous blows to the head. In boxing when the head is knocked sideways, the brain
swirls in the skull, its layers shearing and sliding off one another, tearing vital nerve fibres . Statistics
show that 15 20% of boxers ending a professional career develop the punch drunk syndrome . This
syndrome consists of the brain weakening, loss of memory, slowed speech and difficulty in walking.
Also boxing can effect the time of death. A professional boxer dies around 10 15 years earlier than the
average life expectancy. People argue that a sport, which can result in players suffering from brain
damage and cerebral ischemia ( a disruption of blood supply to an area of the brain ) should be banned
straight away because of the life threatening risks involved
However, Dr Nigel Warburton, a lecturer in philosophy for the Open University, claims that the

Hippocrates, regarded as the greatest physician of antiquity, and other physicians created a
Hippocratic Oath in which a group of professional physicians upheld a strict code of ethics
(greekmedicine.net). This is a precursor to modern, medical ethics and had a great influence on the
ideas of later physicians. Hippocrates believed that the body was made up of four liquids, or humors ,
yellow bile, black bile, blood, and phlegm. He thought that for an individual to be healthy or fight of
disease, the four fluids had to be in balance inside the body. While this was obviously wrong, it was
still a prominent discovery at the time. The Greeks also contributed heavily to biology, mainly by the
work of Aristotle. He made countless observations on the behavior and habits of the plants and
animals in the world, and placed an emphasis on categorizing them. In total, he classified 540 species
and dissected over 50 (leadershipclassics.org). He also believed in the Great Chain of Being, a scale of

set the standard for zoologists and biologists after him, and have been a major influence on biology for

Abstract: A mechanism of the initiated nonbranched chain process of forming 1,2 alkanediols and
carbonyl compounds in alcohol formaldehyde systems is suggested. The quasi steady state treatment
is used to obtain kinetic equations that can describe the nonmonotonic (with a maximum) dependences
of the formation rates of the products on the concentration of free unsolvated formaldehyde. The
experimental concentration of the free unsolvated form of formaldehyde are given at the different
temperatures, solvent permittivity, and total concentrations of formaldehyde in water and alcohols.
An empirical equation for calculating the free formaldehyde concentration in alcohol formaldehyde
(including water/ethanediol formaldehyde) systems at various temperatures and total formaldehyde
concentrations and an equation for evaluating solvent concentrations in these systems were derived.
Keywords: nonbranched chain process, free formaldehyde, 1 hydroxyalkyl radical, formyl radical,

  • 2. Free Will In Sophocles Antigone Antigone by Sophocles follows an adamant, strong willed woman attempting to defend her ideal towards death by providing her brother and a traitor to the state, Polynices, a proper burial against the positive law asserted by the King. In the play, Ismene, Antigone s sister, best exemplifies the suffering engendered by authoritarian repression and over dependency on the role of fate versus the role of free will. The ramifications pertaining to the characters subdued and powerless individuality presents a modern day parallel to the compulsion Syrian civilians are facing under the tyrannical rule of Bashar al Assad. During the conversation between Antigone and Ismene within the prologue, Antigone, resolute and determined, proposes to her sister ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The quotation, I m forced, I have no choice I must obey the ones who stand in power [Ismene, 78] is applicable to a modern day context upon considering the political scenario and civil unrest in Syria. Bashar al Assad, the Syrian President, is the equivalent to Sophocles Creon in the sense that they share ultimate power and authority over their people. The prideful exercising of available dominance over civilians forms another bridge between al Assad and Creon, which enables us to create parallels between those facing and accepting the repression. Al Assad s regime has been in power for the last three election terms. The reason for this is not his political competency but rather his dictating presence which has terrorized a majority of innocent citizens. Fifteen children in the southern Syrian city of Daraa had their nails removed by torture as they scribbled anti Assad words on their school walls. His regime has continued to kill hundreds of protestors who stood up for the students and has left many more scarred with fear and threat. Similar to Ismene s dialogue and situation during the prologue, innocent Syrians feel forced [Ismene, 78] and, despite living in a so called democracy, have no choice [Ismene, 78] but to ... The Role Of The Mirabal Sisters In Rafael Trujillo s Regime The Mirabal sisters or Mariposas, are three revolutionaries who inspired and assisted the overthrow of Rafael Trujillo, the dictator in the Dominican republic. These sisters at a young age observed countless flaws in Trujillo s Regime, he was overpowering and passed many unjust laws. The Mirabals, especially knew that they had to do something to end this terrible regime, so they joined the revolution. These brave women sacrificed raising their own children and even their own lives. These revolutionaries are viewed as selfish by numerous people because they left behind their own children. If the Mirabal sisters didn t make these sacrifices their children would have grown up in an unfair country. Minou understands that her mother had to let her go in order to provide a good life for her and her country. The Mirabals sacrificed their lives to free our country, so that we and our children could live in a free country. Trujillo s henchmen murdered the Mirabal sisters, and made it look like an accident. Furthermore, their death led to other revolutionaries deciding to assassinate Trujillo to end his terrible regime. This essay discusses the thoughtful quotation of the author. Most of the great people whose life path inspires us experienced lots of difficult situations, heartbreaks, disappointments. For example: Mahatma Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, Mother Teresa, Steve Jobs... the list goes on. In my view they become great persons just because of their great failures during lifespan. They felt anger, sadness, and hate... whatever was the emotion they felt, it made them move forward, and somehow these emotions broke them down and healed them too. Both ideologies subscribe to some of the same social and political theories and have many points of comparison and interest. First of all, both Strong and Hitler subscribed to theories of racial hierarchy and social Darwinism. Interestingly, although both believed their races to be the superior there was some mutual respect between the two. Hitler admiring the British empire and having good relations with the royal family and Strong referring to the German Race as one of the noblest (even though living at different times in history) Strong believed Protestant Christianity was the most powerful force for civilizing peoples all over the world, and he believed that people of Anglo Saxon origin were the best positioned to civilize the rest of the world. • 7. Dewey s Rational Problem Solving Process When it comes to conflict in the workplace, it is not a question of if it will occur, but rather a question of when. There is also a question of how well managers will deal with this conflict and if it will become constructive or destructive (Hynes, 2010, p. 237). John Dewey recommends using a 6 stage process that reasonable individuals can use to solve a problem (Hynes, 2010, p. 311). Dewey recommends first defining a problem, analyzing a problem and then brainstorming possible answers to the problem (Hynes, 2010, p. 311). He then recommends identifying the parameters of what must occur to eliminate a problem, choosing the best solution from identified options and then implementing the chosen solution (Hynes, 2010, p. 311). Dewey s Rational Problem Solving Process The conflict described in Case 10 1 is a classic case of a non managerial employee being pulled in multiple directions by managerial employees. Rankin, a non managerial employee in the Credit department, often helps Sims, the manager of Accounting (Hynes, 2010, p. 238). However, sales have been increasing so Rankin has not been able to help Sims as often as she previously had been because she has also needed to assist the Sales department (Hynes, 2010, p. 238). As a result, Sims approached Martinez, the manager of Sales, and told him that she needed Rankin s assistance more than he needed her help in assisting the Sales department (Hynes, 2010, p. 238). Basically, a conflict over a resource ensued ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Camping At Devils Lake The vibrant greens, the hastening winds through the trees, the mosquitoes biting where mosquito spray is lacking, and the raccoons stealing the last box of lucky charms, these are some of the joys experienced in the great outdoors. The outdoors is one of my favorite get away locations. From before my adolescence to this day, I am an outdoorsman: From camping at Devils Lake, to canoeing the Canadian Boundary Waters, and even sailing the Florida Keys. Camping is enjoyable for me because it is a place of freedom, a place of relaxation, and a place where I can create memories with my family and friends. The secluded outdoors, away from cities, is a place broken away from the chains of society. Though campgrounds still have rules, the rules instituted our quite lax in both definition and enforcement. People can often do a lot more in a campground or in nature reserves than in cities or even towns. A minor example of this would be the use of bicycles, in a city bicycles need to ride in the bike lane on the right side of the road, however in a campground you can ride the bike on the road or take it off road onto the trails and explore. Though most campgrounds have rules on where you can ride your bike, the rules are not very strict nor are they very enforced. Since there is only a minute amount of people you encounter while camping it also allows you the freedom of doing whatever you want without the judgmental eyes of society laying upon you. • 11. How Sugar Affects The Melting Rate Of Ice Research The Effect of Sugar On The Melting Rate Of Ice. Abstract: The melting rate of each type of ice cube was different, depending on whether they had sugar in them or not. One type of ice cube contained sugar, where the other one didn t, and as a result, the lowering of the freezing point of the water seemed to be affected by the sugar. Introduction: I conducted this experiment to see whether sugar would cause the ice cube to melt faster. There were two different types of ice cubes; just pure water, and water that contained sugar. Liquid water contains molecules that are disordered and jumbled, but when it is frozen, the molecules become ordered and regular. The sugar molecules don t fit into this, so when you freeze the water, the water freezes first and the sugar stays behind in the liquid part as the ice develops. Sugar makes the ice harder to form, therefore lowering the freezing point. By lowering the freezing point, it keeps the ice from re freezing as easily, helping to melt the rest of the ice. ... • 12. The Downfall Of The Lehman Brothers Part A On September 15, 2008, the infamous investment bank Lehman Brothers was forced to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy by the federal court. The firm was entangled in risky business that ultimately led to its demise because they did not take reasonable care to avoid acts that were foreseeably damaging to the United States economy. Established in the United States, Henry Lehman and his brothers, Mayer and Emanuel, formed a partnership to start a general merchandising business together naming it Lehman Brothers. Soon after its founding, the Lehman Brothers marked their evolution by turning into a global financial service firm. The firm grew to be a major player in the financial history of the country, rapidly prospering to be the fourth largest modern investment and brokerage bank corporation. The Lehman Brothers held a policy until the 1920 s that only family members were permitted to form legal partnerships among this firm, then eventually branched off allowing other key members to be carried into the business. Lehman Brothers continued to develop their financial strategies and invested heavily into the mortgage market. Once the firm became a practitioner for mortgages, the inflating housing market became an appealing investment. • 13. Comparing Augustine de Hippo and Mohammed to the Idea of a... Greek and Roman cultural values pervaded the Western religious society and made it possible for a series of Christian and Muslim religious individuals to be associated with historic figures present in Ancient Greece and Rome. While the modern society has a different understanding of the concept of the traditional hero, society during the early centuries perceived heroes as being individuals who possessed a series of attributes related to religious ideas and to a general attitude that promoted moral behavior. Individuals like Augustine de Hippo and Mohammed have come to be seen as having several attributes that linked them to the idea of the classic Greek hero. It is surely surprising that religion has adopted a pagan Greek term with the purpose of trying to describe some of its most notable figures. It is not necessarily that Augustine de Hippo and Mohammed were considered to possess superhuman abilities, as people came to associate them with heroes because they were dedicated to assisting the masses and because they were predisposed to doing good. In addition to being perceived as one of the most important attributes in a saint, heroism actually started to be praised by Christians as one of the principal qualities in any true Christian. Augustine de Hippo basically believed that in order to be seen by God as a person who was capable to serve divinity, the respective individual needed to be familiar with the attitudes that he or she needed to put across and with the fact ... • 18. A Website On Air Pollution Our proposal is to create a website that encourages people to learn about how to use their car efficiently. Our website is called Greenriding and there are some games and quizzes that teach you about air pollution. During this game you earn points and you can trade it in for coupons and the coupon is sent to the person by email, and comes in a printable PDF. These coupons can be traded in for things that help air pollution (free smog checks, free tire inflation, free shuttle rides, and free tune ups). The reason our proposal is mainly focused on learning lessons, to earn points, to get coupons, is because actually keeping your car in good shape is a huge impact on the environment. Also getting your car checked out, and fixed soon after your engine light goes on, can improve your mileage by more than 30%. The second part of Greenriding is a car and shuttle system called Greenrides. You can either rent a shuttle bus for multiple people, or you could rent an individual car for just a few people. To become a member of the Greenrides program, you pay $25 per year. You get the individual car rides for free, but would still pay $10 per shuttle ride. We the car manufactures are concerned that the next generation of drivers will not be educated enough on air pollution. They should be able to learn about air pollution for a small price. Your car is designed to run at an optimal efficiency, however time, distance, and weather, contribute to decreasing that efficiency. Routine ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 19. Gallipoli Research Paper The average Indian is almost ignorant about Gallipoli as a campaign in World War I, retired Indian Air Force wing commander Rana Chhina said in a 2015 ABC article. The average Australian however, may think they have learnt every last detail of the campaign before they ve even graduated high school. When one thinks of the ANZAC legend, they think of thousands of strapping, fit, young, white lads going off to the war to fight for King and country. Seldom does one think of the 15,000 Indian men fighting alongside those. Neither does one contemplate just how much... nor perhaps how little the ANZAC legend means to the Indian population in Australia because of this disregard. Professor Stanley claims that the number was in excess of 15,000 in his new book. Those numbers are comparable to the 20,000 ANZAC soldiers who fought at Gallipoli. According to updated records at the Australian War Memorial, 8,159 Australian and New Zealand combatants perished. Together with them, approximately 10% of the serving Indian militia also died, 3,500 wounded. And yet, Mr. Chhina says that the only recognition in India of the 15,000 that fought and 1,500 that died is but a small plaque at a hospital in Ferozepur. It is no surprise that all that the Indian militants had done is not near to common knowledge. • 20. Literary Criticism In Cardinal Richelieu Alfredo Camacho Dr. Fontes CLAS 5 3 October 2017 Book Review Poetry is a form of art that serves the purpose to express the writer s opinions, and also combat oppressive forces without the use of any physical force. These writers can relate to the expression by the playwright and novelist Edward Bulwer Lytton in the play Cardinal Richelieu, The pen is mightier than the sword (BBC); this expression serves as a metaphor in its own right as the nature describes the effect of words to provide a stronger impact on the intended audience than any kind of violence would. This term ties in perfectly with the ideas of Chicanx; the Chicanx perspective of life is oppression and the dangers of racial tensions and manners to dethrone those who impose that on others. They have long fought against the unfair forces that have come against them, and have been involved in many violent forms of protest. With Cesar Chavez becoming more invested in the peaceful form of protesting to gain trust and momentum in the campaigns they were in, more and more writers began to express their feelings and place their own two cents into the mixture of ideas. Often long stories are made in effort to express a personal form of how life is changing and growing fears are turning into, however some writers chose to use poetry as their version of a weapon against the oppressing forces. A poem is much shorter and does not provide the sufficient build up that can be placed into a Chicano novel, but the effect of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Puerto Rico is a small island off the coast of the more southeast tip of the United States right below the tip of Florida. The island is located in the caribbean sea and is among an island chain of different islands like Jamaica, Cuba, and the island of Haiti. Puerto Rico just like many other territory in the caribbean sea became under United States control in one way or another starting in the early 1900s. The United States saw Puerto Rican, as a desirable possession given its strategic location, potential markets, and agricultural possibilities. (Scupin, p209) The Puerto Rican American people faced many challenges and accomplishments when they first came to America; there contributions to American culture are vast, and there immigration history is full of stores of hardship and togetherness. The Puerto Rican people just like the Mexican American people became part of America s by conquest and not by choice. • 23. Comparing Frankenstein And Frankendoodle And Frankenstein Frankenstein is a classic science fiction novel written by Mary Shelley, through the ages many adaptations have taken the story through various forms of popular culture. Spongebob Squarepants, a popular children s television show often alludes to classic literature, and makes it entertaining for all ages. While this example is quite comical, it does hold classical elements associated with Frankenstein, but takes a spin on the classic science fiction novel. In this essay I will consider the similarities and difference between the two texts; Frankendoodle as well as Frankenstein . By looking at the allusion apparent in Frankendoodle , it is clear to see that many of the more popularized characteristics are found throughout the text, such as; a name given to the creature, the creature being aggressive thoughtless monster, and the creator having a sidekick. Fundamentally, the idea of a creature being born into this world through unconventional means is clearly demonstrated in both texts. Frankendoodle shadows Mary Shelley s original text, Frankenstein but allows it to highlight the Frankenstein that was born through many forms of popular culture. Spongebob Squarepants is a children s television show that aired periodically from the early 1990 s into 2010. It s production takes place in Nickelodeon Studios by main producer, Stephen Hillenburg. The Environmental Hazards Of The United States A common sight to a visitor on a beach in the U.S. is garbage that has been pitched by another person or washed up on the beach, after it has been carelessly thrown away. All the carelessly disposed of trash eventually accumulates, rather it be in one place, such as a landfill, or in many places just dispersed and spread out, like litter. In 1997, Captain Charles Moore came across a large trash deposit, while sailing in his boat, Alguita, in the pacific. What he encountered that day could only be described as a floating continent of trash, which today has names such as trash vortex , plastic soup , and Eastern Garbage Patch (Friedman 7 10). The mass of trash is still present today and is calculated to be twice the size of the U.S., weighing in at around 100 million tons of trash (Friedman 7). This garbage patch is one of the leading growing environmental hazards of the world today. The trash has been linked to cancer, caused by the toxins released in the water from the plastics, the killing of seabirds, and the killing of more than a 100,000 marine mammals each year (Friedman 9). This is one of the negative effects human trash is having on the planet and how people are now turning to recycling to help resolve problems similar to this. Today people in the U.S. alone produce 245 million tons of trash a year, which helps contribute to problems like the trash vortex (Lazarus 13).
