Punk Rock Subculture
Punk Rock in America: The Development, the Youth Subculture and Salt Lake City
In both the United States and Great Britain, a genre of music, now known as punk rock was
developing in the late 1960s and 1970s that would provide an outlet for the emotions young adults
were feeling at that time. For the purpose of this paper, I will focus on the development of punk in the
United States, however punk rock arose at the same time in both the US and Great Britain, and had
what one might describe as a symbiotic, yet adversarial relationship (Stalcup). Therefore, one cannot
completely disregard the development of punk rock in Great Britain while discussing the development
of punk rock in America. In the US, punk rock arose on the east coast, mostly ... Show more content

American punk bands first began on the east coast in places such as New York City as a counteraction
to the sounds being played during the time, such as The Beach Boys surfer sounds, folk music and
disco. Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground were some of the first pioneers in what would become
American punk. After the Velvet s demise...New York was a hotbed of activity in the early 1970s
(Stalcup). One of the best punk clubs in New York City during this time is known as CBGB (Country
Blue Grass and Blues). Many groups such as the New York Dolls and Television, got their start either
at CBGB or in New York as a whole. Television would go on to become a band that influenced others
to speak to the youth subculture. With Television s song, (I Belong to the) Blank Generation
Television emphasized the emptiness of his generation, on the chorus, I belong to the blank generation
and I can take it or leave it each time (Stalcup). Since once something is introduced, it cannot be taken
away, punk rock bands drew inspiration from those such as Iggy Pop and the Stooges. However,

Graduating High School Life Analysis
Coming from a family of six, I was the first to graduate high school. Within my immediate family,
graduating from high school was viewed as a choice, not a priority. They all started a family early,
dropped out of school, and struggled through day to day life. Still, I did learn the value of working
hard for what my family needed. Another value that became introduced was to constantly want more
and never settle for what life hands out. Once I understood the military was an option after high
school, it became a goal. That being the moment, graduating high school became a priority in my
eyes. With hard work and goals set, I became the first in my family to graduate high school. Growing
up from a family that always supported the military I assured myself of what my future career would
be. My grandfather and uncle joined the military straight from high school. The observable
characteristics where their dress and appearance. Their behavior seemed different from the other
people I grew up close to. They were proud, confident, and I admired that. Day by day, they were up

The non observable characteristics that the military improved within my own were also values and
customs. When entering the military, I myself had one set of values that included family. The longer
my enlistment, the more my coworkers became an extension of that family. When my unit deployed,
the reliance for each other was greater than the trust given a loved one. The one custom the military
honors more than all others: the utmost respect for the American flag. The flag became a symbol of
what we were fighting for. The military ended up being a life history with hard earned
accomplishments. After being forced to retire from the military, it occurred to me the customs and
values the military drilled in me became a large part of my daily

Analysis of Sanaotrium Purkersdorf by Josef Hoffmann Essay
The Purkersdorf Sanatorium and the Fusion of Function and Design
Stark white and machine like from a distance, the Purkersdorf Sanatorium designed by Austrian
architect Josef Hoffmann emanates a feeling of sterility. However, the building also exhibits a hint of
luxurious charm upon closer observation. As the first major commission for the Wiener Werkstätte
company, Josef Hoffmann was determined to introduce his forward looking ideas to the era. Through
the sanatorium, Hoffmann successfully demonstrated not only the visual appeals of modern simplicity
but also how modernism was appropriately adjusted to enhance the building s intended purpose.
Having studied under renowned architect Otto Wagner, Josef Hoffmann was familiar with the ... Show

Even the lamps, tables and window designs mirror similar geometric patterns. By doing so, what
Hoffmann has created is a harmonious environment that is both practical and visually soothing The
sanatorium provided a diverse offering of programs and resources to patients. Their services included
hydrotherapy, electrotherapy, special diets, etc. Their facilities included billiard rooms, reading rooms,
music rooms, saloons, etc. Patients could access everything they needed to feel comfortable. The
effective layout planning of the building contributed to effective therapy practices. Utilities and
services were hidden in the basement, social gathering and dining spaces were on the first floor, and
living quarters were on the second and third floors. This separation of spaces due to functions created
an intuitive organizational structure. The luxury and layout referenced the style of a grand hotel, but
included many quality health related benefits. With an array of functional offerings, each room in the
sanatorium was designed to best serve the function of the room. For example, the bedrooms intended
for tuberculosis patients had the largest windows to allow the greatest amount of sunlight possible.5
Just as functionally focused as the exterior, Hoffmann used the same concept of practicality when
designing the interior elements of the Purkersdorf Sanatorium. As a traditionally trained artist,
Hoffmann was not just an architect, but innovator in

accusing the local director of the United Way, Dr. Harvey Serene, of embezzling more than $400,000

Why Should Schools Be Allowed To Have A Security Block
Internet Blocking
Some schools give students laptops for part of their resources. They can search the internet and look
up information they need for essays and assignments. This may sound like a great idea in theory, but
once you get the laptop, you soon realize your searching options are extremely limited. If you don t
word things correctly, the thing you search can end of blocked. Why would the school allow such a
great tool to be used for school, and then block 90% of what we are allowed to use? Why bother with
the computers in the first place? And most of all, isn t that taking away our rights? The first complaint
most people have over this matter is the contradicting cost. In a lot of cases, the school may pay for
the computers, but who has to pay the school? The students and their parents. So the students are
really the ones who paid for the computers, and we are told what we can and can t do with them. That
sounds pretty stupid either way you look at it. Even in cases where the students and their families don
t pay a dime, the school uses tax dollars to pay for them. Our parents pay taxes, so it s still their
money. We should be allowed to say if we want a security block or not. ... Show more content on

We might not be adults yet, but we are expected to act like adults and that includes the benefits of

to act as another parent. What the student searches should be between the student and their parents. If
the kid screws up, let his parents deal with it. The kid will learn and move on. It s not so far fetched to
let the parents be the parents and the school to stay out of the way. It is none of their

Who Is To Blame In The Cruel God Of Genesis
The Cruel God of Genesis
This essay will propose and support the thesis that God carries the blame for the expulsion of man
from the Garden of Eden and resulting downfall of mankind.
Genesis has always been the cause of heated discussions. The work itself is not all that confusing, but
rather the symbolism buried deep within the text is. The opinions of the reader often have a substantial
influence on the reader s interpretation of the text. Because the scripture has played such an important
role in the theological beliefs of so many Christians, extremely different interpretations of the text
have the potential to create distance between even the closest of friends and even worse, families. To

Gave usually implies the transfer of possession from one person to another. In all actuality, God was
merely teasing Adam and Eve with the idea of eternal paradise. God knew of the inevitable original
sin and even still he gave Adam and Eve a taste of paradise. If indeed God loved them as much as he
supposedly did, wouldn t he have saved them the torment of having to surrender a true heaven on
earth because they made one little mistake? God knew that by giving man free will he would also be
giving them the opportunity to lose everything that they held dear to them. Also, if the will bestowed
on Adam were so free, why would he have to be subject to the consequences of his actions? In all
actuality, Adam and Eve did have free will; just as long as they didn t think for themselves and only
did what God told them to do. In essence, it is very much like getting something for free, but still
having to pay the tax. In other words, God dropped the theoretical ball when he came up with his not
so free will. The final question that remains is why? Why did God bring to an end his own creations
eternal happiness?
When given just the information presented in Genesis 1 3, the motives behind God s cruel plot are not
quite so obvious. But when consideration is taken for the fact that the entire Bible is, for all logical
reasons, God s plan set in plain ordinary words. All things must come to an end, so the saying goes.
Even the world as we know it will come to an end.

Structure Of An Essential Amino Acid
Task 2: Protein Structure
Task 2a: model of an essential amino acid.
Methionine (C5H11NO2S) is a Non polar (hydrophobic) essential amino acid that contains a sulfur
atom. According to Wolf (2000), a hydrophobic molecule such as Methionine is usually located near
the center of a protein covered by hydrophilic molecules.
The R group of Methionine is relatively non reactive. It, therefore, plays more structural protein roles
than functional protein (Betts Russell, 2003). Due to its non reactivity Methionine does not actively
participate in chemical reaction that occurs at the active site of an enzyme. However, the sulfur atom
has potential for oxidation (Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics, University of
Arizona, 2003). Its flammability likelihood of low, but its combustibility potential can be realized at
high temperatures (Science lab, 2013).
Although the carboxyl end has a pKa of 2.28 and that of the amino end has a pKa pf 9.21 (Science lab,
2013), the R group of Methionine is neutral (Nave, 2012).
Task 2b: A series of diagrams, with clear labels, of the different levels of protein structure (i.e.
Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, Quaternary).
Task 2c: diagram that demonstrates how a peptide bond is made through dehydration, using a
complete chemical equation.
Task 2d: diagram that demonstrates how a peptide bond is broken through hydrolysis, using a
complete chemical equation.
Task 2e: Explain the four forces (i.e. bonds or interactions) that

Introduction
Healthy living is having a balanced lifestyle to improve people s health and well being. Unhealthy
living is engaging in activities that can potentially harm ones health. Obesity and heart disease are two
of the many illnesses associated with an unbalanced lifestyle. The benefits of a healthy lifestyle are
amazing compared to those who have an unhealthy lifestyle. There are long term and short term
benefits for having a healthy lifestyle such as, longevity and mood improvement.

Research suggests that weight training helps combat: osteoporosis, sarcopenia, diabetes, heart disease,
and cancer (Winett Carpinelli, 2001).
Diet: Restricted fried food.
Diet is essential to having a healthy lifestyle. The body needs key nutrients from different foods to
help the body function properly. Fried food is very unhealth due to the high calorie content and fried
foods have very few nutritional value. If frying foods cannot be balanced it can be detrimental to one s
health. Not only does fried foods have physical effects on the body, it also can cause mental effects
according to The British Journal of Psychiatry (Akbaraly, et al., 2009). They found that, processed
food dietary pattern is a risk factor for CES D depression (Akbaraly, et al., 2009). The short term
benefit of eliminating fried foods and process food can help reduce the chances of depression. In
addition, studies show that fried foods are linked to laryngeal cancer according to Cancer research in
the Uk (Bosetti, et al., 2002). The long term benefit of eliminating fried foods and process food can
help reduce the chances of cancer. Water intake: Restrict high sugar beverages
¬¬¬¬¬¬¬ A good diet not only includes what people eat, but what people drink as well. Staying away
from drinks with high sugar content can prevent health risks. Water is the healthiest drink one can
consume. The benefits of staying away from sugary drinks and drinking water is astounding.

Classroom Management Reflection Paper
3. Reflection on theory in practice
3.1 Introduction
Teachers use a variety of preventative and corrective strategies in their classroom organisation. These
practices should be based on a teacher s pedagogical perspectives. While there are many different
practices, the physical layout of the classroom; expectations, rules and code of conduct; logical
consequences; and I messages will be the focus of this reflection.
3.2 Classroom physical layout and resources
The physical layout of the classroom was aimed at cooperative learning. A method of organisation that
has the students participate in small groups (Lyons et al., 2014). Tables and chairs were generally

This system was based on a behavioural perspective, whereby expectations were set and behavioural
or academic compliance was rewarded. This method is most similar to the assertive discipline outline
by Lyons et al. (2014). The use of this token reinforcement system is recommended for motivating
disinterested students, encourage students with poor academic outcomes, or to deal with a class with
challenging behaviours (Woolfolk Margetts, 2013). In this case, the token system may have been
appropriate because it also functioned as social reinforcement, which is consistent with cognitive
behavioural theory (Lyons et al., 2014). Whereby, students felt social pressure to conform to the
expectations of the teacher and were reminded by peers when they were not conforming.
The class code of conduct also reflects an assertive discipline approach with one behavioural
descrpitor stating, listen and follow instructions . However, unlike the code of conduct advocated by
Lyons et al. (2014), this code of conduct did not articulate a values statement and principles. Instead,
only behavioural descriptors were listed. Having the behavioural descriptors without the principles
and values statement detaches it from its purpose. Therefore, why students had to listen and follow
instructions was not clearly explained.
3.4 Logical consequences
In the classroom, the teacher used logical consequences which are based on Goal Centered Theory. A
consequence differs from a punishment by

Anti White he opens the article saying When we were growing up in Harlem our demoralizing series
of landlords were Jewish, and we hated them. We hated them because they were terrible landlords, and
did not take care of the building. This statement itself clearly shows the relationship between Blacks
and Jews during the time he was growing up in New York. He further states Furthermore, the Jew can

The Jewish acceptance of their ability to fit into the white crowd became a huge problem for blacks.
Considering the history of blacks and the history of Jews, there are some commonalities. First of all,
would be that both groups are minorities. Second, both groups of people have been victims of
oppression throughout their existence. However, for those Jewish survivors of the Holocaust, they
were able to escape their sorrows and migrate to the United States for a better life. For African
Americans, this wasn t the case. Where were they to run to post slavery? They were stuck in their
place of misery that lasted for years and the only thing they could do was hope for better days in the
country that hurt their race. There were very different views on the idea of whiteness . In Jane Anna
Gordon s What Should Blacks Think When Jews Choose Whiteness? An Ode to Baldwin, she states
that Jews in the United States are seen by their black counterparts to have opted to become white.
Assuming that most blacks at the time were ignorant to the actual history behind Jews, they felt like
they were just choosing whiteness and genuinely wanted to contribute to the oppression of blacks,
leading to an increased amount of Anti Semitism due to anti whiteness. In Karen Brodkin s How Jews

Analysis Of The Poem The Winter Evening Settles Down
T.S Eliot s poem, The winter evening settles down is a short, simple to read poem with several
different examples of imagery. Eliot uses descriptive words, for instance, withered leaves , broken
blinds , and lonely cab horse (lines 7 10). He paints an extremely bleak image of a town that seems to
be deserted of people. The tone of the poem plays hand in hand with the imagery used. This town is an
unpleasant place where it has seemed to be neglected for some years now. Eliot s use of imagery takes
the reader to this deserted, torpid place; however, at the same time, his goal is to bring the life back
into this grim town.
As stated prior, the town being described in the poem has a very dull and gloomy feel that surrounds
it. The first line reads, the winter evening settles down. By personifying winter, the reader is able to
have a visual idea of what is currently happening in this fallen town. After reading this line one is able
to make the inference that the setting of this poem is the winter season. A winters day can start off
beautiful and seem magical, however, when the day comes to an end and the snow slowly starts to
melt and everything becomes disgusting. Eliot is slowly painting an eerie scene in just the first line of
the poem. There is also an underlying feeling of exhaustion and boredom described throughout this
poem. The burnt out ends of smoky days (line 4) causes the reader to visualize perhaps the burnt out
end of a cigarette. The fire is gone at the

The snow seemed like it will never stop. At my house, that sits upon the top of a mountain, we had

With the smell of black coffee, I woke up in my sister s room. The sunshine was beginning to peak
into the small yellow room, my sister, Allison, was still sleeping with shallow breaths. I carefully
swing my legs out of her bed, the frame made a quick, high pitch creak as I stand up. As I tiptoe

the bedroom door behind me. I descend down the steps, awaiting me is a zealous black dachshund.
She shakes her body happily and runs towards the door, her nails clicking on the wood floor along the
way. I try to open the frosting glass door, but the compacted snow was hindering the glass. With a
burst of strength, the door opens and the cold and angry air slaps my face. Hopping out the front door,
my dachshund lands in a pile of snow and pushes the snow in the house. I close the door quickly, to
see my grandmother sitting at the old wooden kitchen table. She smiles as my mother walks in. My

Kant Vs Hobbes
1. Thomas Hobbes is the founding father of modern political philosophy, in his work ¨Leviathan¨ he
sets out why people should obey governmental authority in order to avoid the risk of chaos and
bloodshed which he defines as the ¨state of nature.¨ Imagine a world without laws. Hobbes called this
hypothetical time, with no rules to command our actions, a state of nature, and he describes life there
as solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short. In a state of nature, every man is against every man. One
might assume that in such a state of nature the strong would naturally triumph over the weak and
balance would be naturally restored, however, according to Hobbes people are equal. Every individual

Kant refers to this principle of universality as categorical imperatives. If it is necessary for you to lie
to prevent an innocent person from being killed, you must ask what the maxim of the action is. The
maxim, in this case, is lying. If you approve the maxim of lying even to save a life then you are
universalizing that action, basically saying that everyone should always lie if it is in someone s best
interest. If you should be able to do it, then everyone should be able to do it. This leads to a
contradiction and Kant explicitly states that moral actions cannot bring about

Katharsis In Medea, King Lear, And All My Sons
Poetics, by Aristotle, addresses each part of a tragedy and its significance, including katharsis. The
main purpose of a tragedy is to provoke pity or fear in the reader or audience, then a kommos occurs,
a song of lamentation, and the katharsis happens subsequently. The katharsis is a cleansing or purge
from those feelings of pity or fear, as the character whom faces tragedy from their faulty, laments.
Kommos creates katharsis through the death of children in the tragedies Medea, King Lear, and All
My Sons. All three plays follow Poetics guidelines, regarding the inclusion of katharsis and the tragic
event inspiring katharsis, to be among family members. However, each play approaches the aspect of

Lear, and All My Sons. In the tragedy Medea, Jason is faced with realization of the death of his twin
sons who were killed by their, mother, Medea; he falls into agony as he laments, inspiring a katharsis
in the reader. Jason cheated on Medea, assuming that it was okay with her, saying, ...I/ Grew tired of

husband s fiancée and kill her own sons. ...I shall kill my own children. /My children, there is none
who can give them safety, Medea expresses, as she plots her plan (26). Jason is unaware of this act
that his wife is ready to commit. No longer does he have a fiancée, but now he has lost his heirs to the
kingdom. The tragic act occurring among family members, happens in Medea, which was highlighted
in Poetics. The death of Medea and Jason s sons leads to Jason s

Similarities Between Ww1 And Russia
There are parallels between what was happening in Ireland and Russia during World War I that
spurred revolution in both of them. Both countries were generally unhappy with their government and
their involvement in the war. The war amplified the problems, like poverty in Russia and England
limiting Ireland s government, that already existed in both of those countries. Without the negative
impacts of World War I on countries like Russia and Ireland, there would have been less of a call for
revolution.
The social and political climate in Russia changed greatly during WWI. The main reason was because
the people began to dislike the imperial family. Tzar Nicholas II put himself in charge of Russia s
military and let his people down. His leadership led to many defeats and morale in Russia became low.

One of the major similarities between the two countries situation was that Germany had involvement

they also sent revolutionary Vladimir Lenin back to Russia after he was exiled. Lenin eventually led

government. Both Russia and Ireland were displeased with their governments and a large reason these
revolutions happened was to change this. In addition, both countries suffered because of their ruling
government s involvement in the war. Irish soldiers were treated poorly and there was animosity
between English and Irish soldiers. Meanwhile. The Russian army had a similar animosity, but there s

This being said indicates that Pop art could be seen as one of those crossover movements. The
confusion and extreme madness of colour and space show events of the Dada influence. Investigating
the historical and cultural issues could be the starting point for many artworks and inspiration. To say
that an artwork is brash, extreme or subversive, indicates a responds to any artwork or movement.
However the point of art, to get a respond either being good or bad... If you have serious ideas, you
make art, discoveries, and all of a sudden your head starts to break up into laughter, if you find that all
your ideas are useless and ridiculous, know that DADA HAS BEGUN TO SPEAK TO YOU 10.The
readymade object being seen as a thing becomes an issue of context rather than the use of materials.
The question it raises, is it art because its contexts are in a gallery space? or should we ask what is the
fundamental aim of the objects used? The object of art is the intelligently language in a visual format.
The Dada movements short influence could be seen as a weapon that injected humour both in a

Psych Field Experience
Very interesting post. Working in Psych must be hard. I would imagine this field would be difficult for
some HP to set aside their own personal beliefs and judgement. I feel like as humans we always judge
what we don t understand. I would assume that this field of work could lead to compassion fatigue and
burnout due to the types of patients they care for. For example, when I worked in MedSurg I had a
patient on the unit that was a frequent flyer and attempted suicide multiple times. She would stay on
my unit they could place her on behavioral health, and it seemed like every time she was admitted I
was always working. I never had her as a patient but I had spent a lot of time talking with her through
the night. Some of the nurses that cared

The Influence Of Soccer In America
Soccer is the most popular sport in the world by far. It beats out Cricket, which is the second most
popular sport, by one billion viewers. Soccer is even considered a religion or art in other countries, but
in America soccer isn t as popular as it is in other parts of the world. The biggest hindrance to soccer s
popularity in America was that it became viewed as un American. Soccer became the most popular
sport worldwide, because of how little you need to play the sport. The only thing that you need is the
ball, not even another person is required to practice the sport. Since soccer requires so little, merchants
and missionaries would take soccer with them when they travelled. When British merchants would go

How Has War Changed Over Time
In war there is death, but where in death does it change to become what is known today as modern
warfare? Was it a landmark like the first use of a tool or tactic, or is it during a time as a society? The
impactfulness of guns changed the ways wars were fought still even today, but the tanks and airplanes
changed it on even a larger aspect. The other side of the coin is that the perspective of war has
changed through the ages. It changed from an all out barbaric massacre of people, to a gentlemanly
and honorable act, to a cold and cruel mechanized meat grinder. Where did death change to become
modern? In the early 17th century, the revolutionary flintlock was invented in France, changing the
way wars were fought forever. Instead of having ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the 19th century, war was mostly fought in a gentlemanly way. Swords were exchanged when
surrendering, white gloves were worn, and soldiers did When conversations about civil war come up,
it generally is generally known as what is know as volley fire. Volley fire against massed troops
delivered effective projectiles out to 200 yards, but at 300 yards balls from muzzle loaders lost most of
their lethality. Also, while well trained soldiers could load and shoot their muskets five times per
minute, volley fire led to a collective rate of only two to three shots per minute. This tactic was mostly
used up until World War I, where trench warfare became the dominant and obvious tactic due to the
introduction to large artillery. Trench warfare is the obvious solution because when on the battlefield,
death rains to everywhere that can be seen at eye level, the only obvious idea is to dig down because
machine guns can not shoot through the ground. Trench warfare was a puzzle to break and with each
week it was not solved, millions lost their lives. When tanks entered the battlefield in 1916, the barbed
wire was able to be broken and the fire from the enemy was useless. This is where the next tactic came
to age, the blitzkreig. The blitzkrieg, translated to lightning warfare, was most notably used by the
Nazi German army by combining fast moving tanks and dive bombing aircraft to take the area and
infantry to hold the area. Within a little over a year of the first attack of Czechoslovakia, the Nazis
were able to conquer all of europe using this tactic. The problem with this is that it is not very
defensive. Once both the Soviets and the Allied forces broke through the main line, it took 9 months to
capture Berlin. Some credit this victory for the Allies for the mass amount of propaganda first
developed in World War I and perfected in World War 2.

Marriage Is A Unique Social Institution
Marriage is a unique social institution that could be interpreted and defined in a variety of forms and
characterizations. In an emotional aspect, marriage can be generalized as being in a romantic love
relationship in which it is legally monogamous. Although sharing an emotional bond with a significant
other is important, there are several factors that must be taken into consideration when making a
decision into getting married. A couple must understand the depths of marriage in terms of survival.
This emphasizes the realistic aspect of marriage which involves money. Affording a house, a family,

Marriage is a socially approved courtship between two individuals in which the relationship involves
sexual and economic benefits that is assumed to be permanent and includes mutual rights and
obligations. A social institution, as defined by Jonathan Turner, is a complex of positions, roles,

Argumentative Essay On Offshore Oil
While there are many benefits to offshore oil drilling, there are just as many detriments. Many people
believe that even with expanded offshore drilling, world oil prices will not be greatly affected. If it s
not going to save us money than why should we even consider spending the money to do it? To build
an offshore drilling facility is very expensive and many countries do not have the resources or budget
to take on such a huge investment. If a country does not have oil and petroleum resources, it will not
be able to drill offshore. Because of this, offshore drilling will not be equally distributed around the
world.
There are many environmental hazards that come along with offshore oil drilling, including pollution
and the risk of oil spills. Expanding offshore drilling will increase carbon dioxide emissions,
increasing temperatures globally. This has been a continuing issue for decades that does not need to be
increased any more than it already has. Since petroleum is the main cause of air pollution in the world
today, pollution is an ever increasing problem of this industry. The only way to truly address this
pollution problem is to stop increasing expansion of offshore drilling. ... Show more content on

The Coward s way A Sound of Thunder (Ray Bradbury) and The Lottery (Shirley Jackson) are both
connected through a specific quality that characters in both stories contain. That quality is the inability
to make good decisions. When faced with alarming or stressful situations, Eckels, Travis, and the
townsfolk in the lottery, make bad decisions. The townsfolk blunder through their life, blindly
following the unjust tradition to stone someone to death each year. Eckels and Travis are both
cowards, and cowards tend to make bad decisions because they are selfish. Both stories are connected
by these cowardly people that make bad decisions. The lottery townsfolk are put under pressure by not
a person, but by tradition. Tradition makes them scared, and fear blinds people. Traditions can have
many beginnings, but ones such as this, with no positive result, are simply a terrible decision.
However, the townsfolk believe in tradition, and this pressures them into going along with this
horrible idea. When Mrs. Hutchinson is chosen, she also makes a bad decision. Fear can cause denial,
which, in Mrs. Hutchinson s case, can lead to your death. Instead of turning tail and running from her
fate, she stands and lets the other townsfolk surround her, simply saying, It isn t fair, it isn t right, (The
Lottery). Then simply letting the other townsfolk kill her

Surgical Treatment Of Surgical Site Infection
Surgical site infections are estimated to occur in 3% of surgical patients and cost the healthcare system
billions of dollars every year. Surgical site infection contributes to an increased risk of morbidity and
mortality in patients undergoing a surgical procedure. This paper will present preventative evidence
based practice undertaken by healthcare personnel to prevent the occurrence of surgical site infection.
These practices include but are not limited to the appropriate administration of prophylactic
antimicrobial agents and the benefits to patients, the preoperative hair removal methods by shaving
versus clipping and in many cases whether hair removal is necessary or is carried out as a ritual.
Surgical site infections (SSIs) within a 30 day period of an operative procedure can contribute to an
increased risk of morbidity and mortality every year. To prevent the occurrence of an SSI, healthcare
professionals must include a scrupulous operative technique, administration of appropriate
antimicrobial prophylaxis and minimize the introduction of contamination by hospital personnel and
operating room environment. The student wishes to emphasize specifically the importance of skin
preparation to prevent surgical site infection.
Patient safety is of the utmost importance to all health care professionals and nurses are at the frontline

Falling in love with Jenny was something Forest was grateful for. He felt praised for knowing such a
woman as Jenny. Life changed for Forest when he met Jenny. She brought a sense of relief to his life,

feel gratified to know her as a human. Also, Forest gave back to Jenny by giving her flowers and

Gratitude is used either as referring to the wellness in one s self and the wellness outside one s self.

Malaysian animations are generally appealing... the only concern I have is I can t really feel the
uniqueness of Malaysian values that they should have... Every one of those productions seems
struggling to earn recognition...
He also pointed out, when looking at Malaysian animations, he could not see any elements that hold
them as a whole. Every Malaysian animation that he has seen is very heavily influenced by others like
Western and Japanese animations, whereas, Malaysian identities are hardly found. To him, as a
product coming from a supposedly unique country with unique cultures, it should strongly bear its
own distinctive trademark and can give positive examples to the audience. This unique characteristic
could be an effective vehicle to educate audience at all level.
As western and foreign influences in animation are very much the issue for Malaysian animation
productions, it is very hard to pull ourselves away from this norm since people are thinking that
following the trend is the right thing to do. Although to start with, animation shorts that were produced
by National Film of Malaysia in the year 1983, directed and made possible by Hassan Mutalib, were
quite interesting and can be considered as successful to portray Malaysian scene. It did not only have
Malaysian flavours in its looks, the contents were also very much Malaysian.

Steroid Use Of Sports On Sports
Joe Butts Mrs. Gallos English 3H 2 May 2016 Steroid use in Sports Steroid use in sports has became a
large factor of impact in the sports world today. Everyone has their own opinion on it. They either
enjoy watching athletes be ridiculously good at their sport, and they find it entertaining, or they like to

Recording The Oratorio Song Of The Forests
Prior to composing the oratorio Song of the Forests op. 81 in 1948, Shostakovich composed the film
music Michurin that was about the life of horticulturist Ivan Vladimirovich Michurin (1855 1935).
The film music encouraged Shostakovich to compose another work based on the same rural theme.
Below is his statement during the aired interview in 1955 that confirms it:
My work in cinematography has proven beneficial for my activity as a composer. Indeed, a number of
my compositions are a direct outcome of my work in the cinema. For instance, my work on the film
Michurin has prompted me to compose my oratorio the Song of the Forests.
In fact, the lines in song no. 5 Комсомольцы выходят вперед (Young Communists go forward!) of

Another recycled material is the melody that occurs in the movie between 31 45 and 32 04 on the
scene where Michurin and the dignitaries were raising their glasses in a toast to Michurin s much
expected success in developing a new horticultural technique for the benefit of Russian people. The
piano plays the melody as a background music in the scene. Part of the melody becomes an important
recurrent motive that gives a sense of unity to the oratorio Song of the Forests op. 81 (fig. 2). The
unavailability of the film music score forces the author to assume that the melody is written in the key
of C major as seen in fig. 2 below.
Both the short and the longer versions of the melody, which appear previously in film music Michurin
(fig. 2), appear in all songs of the oratorio and give a sense of unity. Borrowing the terminology
mentioned by Pauline Fairclough, the short version will be called motive x. Therefore, the full length
version will be called melody x. Motive x starts on the first scale degree and ascends until the fifth
scale degree with a sixth scale degree as a diatonic upper neighbor pitch.According to Fairclough,
motive x connects songs number 1, 6, and 7, and this proves that the Song of the Forests was
composed very carefully. In addition to Fairclough s statement, motive x actually occurs in other
songs as well generating a coherence in the oratorio. Below is several examples of the utilization of
motive x in each song.
Melody x appears

The Life and Contribution to the Development of the British Empire of James Cook

The purpose of this paper is to describe the life and the contribution to the development of the British
Empire of one of the most important English explorers. It was in the second half of the 18th century

trading centres and eventually, new lands to settle their surplus criminals and poor, unemployed
citizens.
New inventions in navigation these inventions had a profound influence, not only upon Britain, but
even upon much of the rest of the world. John Hadley s invention of the reflecting quadrant made it
possible to determine the latitude at noon or by night. Extremely accurate, it was quickly adopted by
the admiralty (1730). John Harrison s ship chronometer was to revolutionise the world s shipping
(1736). A new method of combating scurvy was found James Lind recommended to use citrus juice
(1747) and finally, John Campbell introduced the new sextant to the Royal Navy (1757). All of these
inventions helped to create Britain s naval supremacy.
A new philosophical approach the 18th century in Western Europe is the beginning of the Age of
Reason, the philosophers and scientists stressed the value of global discovery, of learning more about
the earth and of collecting unusual flora and fauna from around the globe.

Case Analysis Of Selfridges
1.1. Targeting
Targeting is a method of examining the market segments and follow all or any of the following 3
types: undifferentiated, multisegment (differentiated) and concentration (niche) (Palmer, 2009).
Selfridges products diversity means its target include both men and women aged 25 years belonging to
the high income group whose interest is fashion and luxury. Thus, Selfridges targeting can be said to
be concentration (niche); however, due to its prime locations, Selfridges also attracts general public
including families, singles and tourist. Therefore, in that aspect, its targeting strategy is differentiated.
1.2. Positioning and perceptual mapping
Customer perception of a brand is based on how the company positions its brand in the marketing to
generate that impression in their minds. This positioning is based on the company s market position
and its competitors positions.
Selfridges brand positioning is that of high price with high fashionability. Luxury department store
segment is highly competitive because products and brands available are similar and thus brand
loyalty serves as the differentiating factor. Harrods and Harvey Nichols are the strongest competitors
in that segment. However, Harrods is more high end oriented, while although Harvey ... Show more

Selfridges has a clear and well defined logo and colour scheme, making it easily recognisable. In
addition, Selfridges philosophy and vision is well defined in their Vision and Values statement
(Selfridges Group, 2014c), and financially, the company is in a very good condition as can be seen
with Selfridges attaining record gross sales of £1.2 billion and £150 million in operating profit in
2013, which was again bettered in 2014 with gross sales of £1.3 billion and an operating profit of
£155 million, despite the high street gloom in the UK (Selfridges Group, 2014b; The Guardian, 2015;

The American Education Essay
The American Education
Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, the American educational system has undergone much
transition in response to our changing society. Though there have been many problems raised
throughout the years in regard to what our school systems should be teaching our children, there have
also been many developments.
In the final decades of the 20th century, education has continued to evolve in order to meet society s
demands. The transformation of society has created numerous problems in the educational system.
These problems consist of the segregation of races, religions, social classes, and politics. In the earlier
part of the 20th century, African Americans were segregated within schools. They were placed ...

(Examples: Driving taxicabs and cooking in restaurants ). This inflation occurred because the labor
force put such a high demand on education, but did not expand to accompany this high demand. The
inflation became problematic due to the fact that businesses were donating privately funded money to
the educational institutions rather than the citizens in the communities with higher taxes.
Toward the end of the 20th century and beginning of the 21st century, the American education system
has continued to evolve with some new curricular modifications. In 1992, the ?Children of the
Rainbow? curriculum was introduced in New York. This revolutionary curriculum required
elementary schools to teach tolerance towards gays and lesbians. Other new curricula proposals
centered around sexual education, which intended for schools to teach about family values,
abstinence, and sexually transmitted diseases, and methods of family planning. Another major issue
that the American school system was dealing with was nutrition and eating habits of youth. In 2002
the U.S congress passed the ?Obesity and Prevention Treatment Act?, to improve the eating habits in
the nation , where more than 60 percent of Americans are overweight.
Economic concerns and issues continue to plague the education system throughout the United States.
The ?Head Start? program has been established to provide early childhood education to give
economically disadvantaged children early

Lady Chatterly s Lover and A Clockwork Orange
Introduction
Banning books is a legally approved censorship of a text or a body of works, varying from nation to
nation and, mainly, within different periods. It is closely associated with social conventions such as
moral, religious or political attitudes, which shift over time, and thus re evaluate art. D.H Lawrence
Lady Chatterly s Lover and Anthony Burgess A Clockwork Orange are known for their notoriety in
different moments of the twentieth century, because they as well were part of certain definitions of
culture and associated cultural values.
D.H Lawrence: Lady Chatterly s Lover (1928)
Lawrence s novel is a story about a sexual relationship between two members of different class
systems, with sexually explicit descriptions, and words such as fuck or cunt (LCL, pp.46, 320). Thus,
in the first half of the twentieth century, the book was considered offensive or unsuitable for the
public. The character of Lady Chatterley, through an affair with a gamekeeper Oliver, rediscovers her
sexuality, and makes some realisations about her mental and physical needs. In the crude language,
Lawrence captured something new and challenging to the public consensus on a decent culture.
Consequently, a trial of 1960 under the Obscene Publications Act 1959 meant a break with old values,
allowing the book to be viewed as a text of a literary merit, and recognising wider changes of social
norms. It coincided with beginnings of the sexual revolution, greater freedoms in publishing and

A Day At Oakleaf Junior High School
The alarm clock blared as six o clock struck. I groggily climbed out of bed to
begin what I thought was just another day at Oakleaf Junior High School. I followed my usual
routine which included brushing my teeth, taking a shower, and eating my bowl of
delicious Coco Puffs. I gathered my backpack and headed towards the door to begin my
long trek to school when all of a sudden my parents exclaimed, B, you don t have to go
to school today. We re going on vacation! I looked at them with disbelief as she hastily
ushered me out the front door into the already prepared Toyota Highlander. Next thing I
know, I was headed out of Oakleaf to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, with my family for
another action packed vacation.

Once we entered the city, we began the infeasible task of searching for our
luxurious and prominently recognized five star hotel. The ceaseless mazes of intertwined
roadways proved to be an obstruction to our mission. We eventually managed, after
countless stops to request aid from passersby, to find the awe inspiring Coral Beach
Resort Suites. Its magnificent architecture and larger than life appearance took my
breath away. The pure white hotel seamlessly merged with the sandy beach and perfectly
contrasted with the aqua blue sea. In the distance, I could easily see the turquoise
swimming pool that seemed to be as momentous as the ocean itself. After taking in all the
sights, my family and I entered the massive double doors of the hotel and received
countless greetings from the eager hotel staff. They swiftly handed us our room key and
administered directions to our room. We scaled the monstrous building with a unique view
of the beautiful beach through the pristine glass elevator. Within no time, we arrived at our
extravagant and vast suite and were not disappointed with its contents. The enormous
king size beds were so comfortable that it seemed as if I were floating on a cloud.
Furthermore, the limitless space made me feel right at home. After a wonderful night s
sleep, I arose to my parents rushing me into my bathing suit to begin the day s
adventure. As my family

Research Paper On William Shakespeare
What s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet? William
Shakespeare. He himself describes who he is with ease with an excerpt from his book, Twelfth Night.
People all around the world are familiar with Shakespeare. His plays and sonnets are read in
classrooms of all ages around the world. But how does Shakespeare relate back to the time period he
was from? As historians and readers, we know that Shakespeare gifted us with his words, plays, and
sonnets, as well as benefited the people of his time with entertainment from plays. But, could
Shakespeare have changed history with his work? Is it possible that Shakespeare was a pivotal
member of creating the humanist idea and expanding the Renaissance? Did Shakespeare change the
way people thought about religion during this time? Is Shakespeare responsible for inspiring
democracy and putting English mistakes on paper and thus preventing the fall of the United States?
Since Shakespeare s work reached many different kinds of people, it s fair to say that ... Show more

It is believed that William was a member of a group of London players, as an excellent actor, which is
a possible reason as to why he was so familiar and fit in with the drama and author scene in the future.
One of his most famous quotes is about acting and taking is literally in real life. This quote is from the
comical play As You Like It: All the world s a stage, and all the men and women merely players: They
have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts. This cannot be for
certain though, because a lot of information about Shakespeare s life is still unknown. As an introvert,
Shakespeare found himself often times alone. During his private time, he would write. Many people
are familiar with Shakespeare s work. Among his most popular plays are Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet,
Macbeth, A Midnight Summer s Dream, and Julius

My Antonia Literary Analysis
Human minds are filled up with memories and events that have taken place throughout their lifetime.
Some memories can be good, while others are not so pleasant. In My Antonia, we get to see the
positive and negative events that Jim Burden experiences. This also allows us to see into the author s
life because she bases memories from her own personal life to the book. Paralleling characters and
events from her own childhood in the Midwest, Willa Cather gives an insightful look into pioneer life
in My Antonia.
There are many examples of deep and dark memories in this novel. This can be known as gothic
literature, which ...the gothic is an eruption of chaos, a haunting within the heart of realism and order,

People see them more different than the Black Hawk women due to their freedom in becoming a wife,
in their jobs, and in their own moral code. They were more vivid and alive than most others, especially
when they were dancing (Yukman 3). Antonia was known as the best dancer. She loved to dance and
thought about it all the time. People started to talk about her around town, and she was starting to get a
bad name for herself. The Harling s gave her the choice of working with them still and stop dancing
because it was a bad reputation for their name, but Antonia was not going to give up on her passion.
Due to this, she decided to quit her job with the Harling s to pursue her love of dance (Cather

Notice To Defendant Summary
Johnson further contends that the circuit court abused its discretion by failing to exclude the Notice to
Defendant and the OPD Form because the documents probative value was substantially outweighed
by the danger of unfair prejudice. Specifically, Johnson asserts that the documents should have been
excluded because they indicate that he had a pending criminal case, and that they indicate that he is
indigent. The State, for its part, asserts that the documents were critical to establish that the contraband
at issue here belonged to Johnson, and that any prejudice may have suffered did not substantially
outweigh the evidence s probative value. We agree with the State. Although a judge has no discretion
to admit irrelevant evidence, a judge does have considerable discretion to exclude evidence if its
probative value is substantially outweighed by the danger of unfair prejudice, confusion of the issues,
or misleading the jury, or by considerations of undue delay, waste of time, or needless presentation of
cumulative evidence. Md. Rule 5 403. Decisions in this realm are left to the sound discretion of the
trial judge and will be reversed only upon a clear showing of abuse of ... Show more content on

Without the admission of the documents to give context to how the contraband was discovered, there
are at least four individuals who might reasonably have possessed the contraband. To be sure, the
parties contest the persuasive value of these documents vigorously. The State, maintains that the
contraband was found in the trunk of a vehicle with multiple occupants and individuals to whom the
vehicle was registered was not among the occupants. Whereas Johnson maintains that the documents
are unreliable. Regardless of their persuasive value, the documents found with the vehicle were
perhaps the only mechanisms to distinguish the possessor of the contraband from the numerous others
who had access to the

  • 2. Punk Rock Subculture Punk Rock in America: The Development, the Youth Subculture and Salt Lake City In both the United States and Great Britain, a genre of music, now known as punk rock was developing in the late 1960s and 1970s that would provide an outlet for the emotions young adults were feeling at that time. For the purpose of this paper, I will focus on the development of punk in the United States, however punk rock arose at the same time in both the US and Great Britain, and had what one might describe as a symbiotic, yet adversarial relationship (Stalcup). Therefore, one cannot completely disregard the development of punk rock in Great Britain while discussing the development of punk rock in America. In the US, punk rock arose on the east coast, mostly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... American punk bands first began on the east coast in places such as New York City as a counteraction to the sounds being played during the time, such as The Beach Boys surfer sounds, folk music and disco. Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground were some of the first pioneers in what would become American punk. After the Velvet s demise...New York was a hotbed of activity in the early 1970s (Stalcup). One of the best punk clubs in New York City during this time is known as CBGB (Country Blue Grass and Blues). Many groups such as the New York Dolls and Television, got their start either at CBGB or in New York as a whole. Television would go on to become a band that influenced others to speak to the youth subculture. With Television s song, (I Belong to the) Blank Generation Television emphasized the emptiness of his generation, on the chorus, I belong to the blank generation and I can take it or leave it each time (Stalcup). Since once something is introduced, it cannot be taken away, punk rock bands drew inspiration from those such as Iggy Pop and the Stooges. However, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Graduating High School Life Analysis Coming from a family of six, I was the first to graduate high school. Within my immediate family, graduating from high school was viewed as a choice, not a priority. They all started a family early, dropped out of school, and struggled through day to day life. Still, I did learn the value of working hard for what my family needed. Another value that became introduced was to constantly want more and never settle for what life hands out. Once I understood the military was an option after high school, it became a goal. That being the moment, graduating high school became a priority in my eyes. With hard work and goals set, I became the first in my family to graduate high school. Growing up from a family that always supported the military I assured myself of what my future career would be. My grandfather and uncle joined the military straight from high school. The observable characteristics where their dress and appearance. The one custom the military honors more than all others: the utmost respect for the American flag. The flag became a symbol of what we were fighting for. Analysis of Sanaotrium Purkersdorf by Josef Hoffmann Essay The Purkersdorf Sanatorium and the Fusion of Function and Design Stark white and machine like from a distance, the Purkersdorf Sanatorium designed by Austrian architect Josef Hoffmann emanates a feeling of sterility. However, the building also exhibits a hint of luxurious charm upon closer observation. As the first major commission for the Wiener Werkstätte company, Josef Hoffmann was determined to introduce his forward looking ideas to the era. Their services included hydrotherapy, electrotherapy, special diets, etc. Their facilities included billiard rooms, reading rooms, music rooms, saloons, etc. Patients could access everything they needed to feel comfortable. The effective layout planning of the building contributed to effective therapy practices. Utilities and services were hidden in the basement, social gathering and dining spaces were on the first floor, and living quarters were on the second and third floors. This separation of spaces due to functions created an intuitive organizational structure. The luxury and layout referenced the style of a grand hotel, but included many quality health related benefits. With an array of functional offerings, each room in the sanatorium was designed to best serve the function of the room. For example, the bedrooms intended for tuberculosis patients had the largest windows to allow the greatest amount of sunlight possible.5 Just as functionally focused as the exterior, Hoffmann used the same concept of practicality when designing the interior elements of the Purkersdorf Sanatorium. They can search the internet and look up information they need for essays and assignments. This may sound like a great idea in theory, but once you get the laptop, you soon realize your searching options are extremely limited. If you don t word things correctly, the thing you search can end of blocked. Why would the school allow such a great tool to be used for school, and then block 90% of what we are allowed to use? Why bother with the computers in the first place? And most of all, isn t that taking away our rights? The first complaint most people have over this matter is the contradicting cost. In a lot of cases, the school may pay for the computers, but who has to pay the school? The students and their parents. So the students are really the ones who paid for the computers, and we are told what we can and can t do with them. That sounds pretty stupid either way you look at it. Even in cases where the students and their families don t pay a dime, the school uses tax dollars to pay for them. Our parents pay taxes, so it s still their money. Who Is To Blame In The Cruel God Of Genesis The Cruel God of Genesis This essay will propose and support the thesis that God carries the blame for the expulsion of man from the Garden of Eden and resulting downfall of mankind. The opinions of the reader often have a substantial influence on the reader s interpretation of the text. If indeed God loved them as much as he supposedly did, wouldn t he have saved them the torment of having to surrender a true heaven on earth because they made one little mistake? God knew that by giving man free will he would also be giving them the opportunity to lose everything that they held dear to them. Also, if the will bestowed on Adam were so free, why would he have to be subject to the consequences of his actions? In all actuality, Adam and Eve did have free will; just as long as they didn t think for themselves and only did what God told them to do. In essence, it is very much like getting something for free, but still having to pay the tax. In other words, God dropped the theoretical ball when he came up with his not so free will. The final question that remains is why? Why did God bring to an end his own creations eternal happiness? When given just the information presented in Genesis 1 3, the motives behind God s cruel plot are not quite so obvious. But when consideration is taken for the fact that the entire Bible is, for all logical reasons, God s plan set in plain ordinary words. All things must come to an end, so the saying goes. • 10. Structure Of An Essential Amino Acid Task 2: Protein Structure Task 2a: model of an essential amino acid. Methionine (C5H11NO2S) is a Non polar (hydrophobic) essential amino acid that contains a sulfur atom. According to Wolf (2000), a hydrophobic molecule such as Methionine is usually located near the center of a protein covered by hydrophilic molecules. The R group of Methionine is relatively non reactive. It, therefore, plays more structural protein roles than functional protein (Betts Russell, 2003). Due to its non reactivity Methionine does not actively participate in chemical reaction that occurs at the active site of an enzyme. However, the sulfur atom has potential for oxidation (Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics, University of Arizona, 2003). Its flammability likelihood of low, but its combustibility potential can be realized at high temperatures (Science lab, 2013). Although the carboxyl end has a pKa of 2.28 and that of the amino end has a pKa pf 9.21 (Science lab, 2013), the R group of Methionine is neutral (Nave, 2012). This system was based on a behavioural perspective, whereby expectations were set and behavioural or academic compliance was rewarded. This method is most similar to the assertive discipline outline by Lyons et al. (2014). The use of this token reinforcement system is recommended for motivating disinterested students, encourage students with poor academic outcomes, or to deal with a class with challenging behaviours (Woolfolk Margetts, 2013). In this case, the token system may have been appropriate because it also functioned as social reinforcement, which is consistent with cognitive behavioural theory (Lyons et al., 2014). Whereby, students felt social pressure to conform to the expectations of the teacher and were reminded by peers when they were not conforming. The class code of conduct also reflects an assertive discipline approach with one behavioural descrpitor stating, listen and follow instructions . However, unlike the code of conduct advocated by Lyons et al. (2014), this code of conduct did not articulate a values statement and principles. Instead, only behavioural descriptors were listed. Having the behavioural descriptors without the principles and values statement detaches it from its purpose. Therefore, why students had to listen and follow instructions was not clearly explained. 3.4 Logical consequences In the classroom, the teacher used logical consequences which are based on Goal Centered Theory. We hated them because they were terrible landlords, and did not take care of the building. However, for those Jewish survivors of the Holocaust, they were able to escape their sorrows and migrate to the United States for a better life. For African Americans, this wasn t the case. Where were they to run to post slavery? They were stuck in their place of misery that lasted for years and the only thing they could do was hope for better days in the country that hurt their race. There were very different views on the idea of whiteness . In Jane Anna Gordon s What Should Blacks Think When Jews Choose Whiteness? An Ode to Baldwin, she states that Jews in the United States are seen by their black counterparts to have opted to become white. Assuming that most blacks at the time were ignorant to the actual history behind Jews, they felt like they were just choosing whiteness and genuinely wanted to contribute to the oppression of blacks, leading to an increased amount of Anti Semitism due to anti whiteness. • 14. Analysis Of The Poem The Winter Evening Settles Down T.S Eliot s poem, The winter evening settles down is a short, simple to read poem with several different examples of imagery. Eliot uses descriptive words, for instance, withered leaves , broken blinds , and lonely cab horse (lines 7 10). He paints an extremely bleak image of a town that seems to be deserted of people. The tone of the poem plays hand in hand with the imagery used. This town is an unpleasant place where it has seemed to be neglected for some years now. Eliot s use of imagery takes the reader to this deserted, torpid place; however, at the same time, his goal is to bring the life back into this grim town. As stated prior, the town being described in the poem has a very dull and gloomy feel that surrounds it. The first line reads, the winter evening settles down. By personifying winter, the reader is able to have a visual idea of what is currently happening in this fallen town. After reading this line one is able to make the inference that the setting of this poem is the winter season. A winters day can start off beautiful and seem magical, however, when the day comes to an end and the snow slowly starts to melt and everything becomes disgusting. Eliot is slowly painting an eerie scene in just the first line of the poem. There is also an underlying feeling of exhaustion and boredom described throughout this poem. The burnt out ends of smoky days (line 4) causes the reader to visualize perhaps the burnt out end of a cigarette. The fire is gone at the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hobbes called this hypothetical time, with no rules to command our actions, a state of nature, and he describes life there as solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short. If you approve the maxim of lying even to save a life then you are universalizing that action, basically saying that everyone should always lie if it is in someone s best interest. In the 19th century, war was mostly fought in a gentlemanly way. Swords were exchanged when surrendering, white gloves were worn, and soldiers did When conversations about civil war come up, it generally is generally known as what is know as volley fire. Volley fire against massed troops delivered effective projectiles out to 200 yards, but at 300 yards balls from muzzle loaders lost most of their lethality. Also, while well trained soldiers could load and shoot their muskets five times per minute, volley fire led to a collective rate of only two to three shots per minute. This tactic was mostly used up until World War I, where trench warfare became the dominant and obvious tactic due to the introduction to large artillery. Trench warfare is the obvious solution because when on the battlefield, death rains to everywhere that can be seen at eye level, the only obvious idea is to dig down because machine guns can not shoot through the ground. Trench warfare was a puzzle to break and with each week it was not solved, millions lost their lives. When tanks entered the battlefield in 1916, the barbed wire was able to be broken and the fire from the enemy was useless. This is where the next tactic came to age, the blitzkreig. The blitzkrieg, translated to lightning warfare, was most notably used by the Nazi German army by combining fast moving tanks and dive bombing aircraft to take the area and infantry to hold the area. Within a little over a year of the first attack of Czechoslovakia, the Nazis were able to conquer all of europe using this tactic. The problem with this is that it is not very defensive. The piano plays the melody as a background music in the scene. Part of the melody becomes an important recurrent motive that gives a sense of unity to the oratorio Song of the Forests op. 81 (fig. 2). The unavailability of the film music score forces the author to assume that the melody is written in the key of C major as seen in fig. 2 below. • 42. Case Analysis Of Selfridges 1.1. Targeting Targeting is a method of examining the market segments and follow all or any of the following 3 types: undifferentiated, multisegment (differentiated) and concentration (niche) (Palmer, 2009). Selfridges products diversity means its target include both men and women aged 25 years belonging to the high income group whose interest is fashion and luxury. Thus, Selfridges targeting can be said to be concentration (niche); however, due to its prime locations, Selfridges also attracts general public including families, singles and tourist. Therefore, in that aspect, its targeting strategy is differentiated. 1.2. Positioning and perceptual mapping Customer perception of a brand is based on how the company positions its brand in the marketing to generate that impression in their minds. This positioning is based on the company s market position and its competitors positions. Selfridges brand positioning is that of high price with high fashionability. • 43. The American Education Essay The American Education Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, the American educational system has undergone much transition in response to our changing society. Though there have been many problems raised throughout the years in regard to what our school systems should be teaching our children, there have also been many developments. In the final decades of the 20th century, education has continued to evolve in order to meet society s demands. The transformation of society has created numerous problems in the educational system. These problems consist of the segregation of races, religions, social classes, and politics. In the earlier part of the 20th century, African Americans were segregated within schools. This inflation occurred because the labor force put such a high demand on education, but did not expand to accompany this high demand. The inflation became problematic due to the fact that businesses were donating privately funded money to the educational institutions rather than the citizens in the communities with higher taxes. Toward the end of the 20th century and beginning of the 21st century, the American education system has continued to evolve with some new curricular modifications. In 1992, the ?Children of the Rainbow? curriculum was introduced in New York. This revolutionary curriculum required elementary schools to teach tolerance towards gays and lesbians. Other new curricula proposals centered around sexual education, which intended for schools to teach about family values, abstinence, and sexually transmitted diseases, and methods of family planning. Another major issue that the American school system was dealing with was nutrition and eating habits of youth. In 2002 the U.S congress passed the ?Obesity and Prevention Treatment Act?, to improve the eating habits in the nation , where more than 60 percent of Americans are overweight. Economic concerns and issues continue to plague the education system throughout the United States. The ?Head Start? program has been established to provide early childhood education to give economically disadvantaged children early ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Lady Chatterly s Lover and A Clockwork Orange Introduction Banning books is a legally approved censorship of a text or a body of works, varying from nation to nation and, mainly, within different periods. It is closely associated with social conventions such as moral, religious or political attitudes, which shift over time, and thus re evaluate art. D.H Lawrence Lady Chatterly s Lover and Anthony Burgess A Clockwork Orange are known for their notoriety in different moments of the twentieth century, because they as well were part of certain definitions of culture and associated cultural values. D.H Lawrence: Lady Chatterly s Lover (1928) Lawrence s novel is a story about a sexual relationship between two members of different class systems, with sexually explicit descriptions, and words such as fuck or cunt (LCL, pp.46, 320). Thus, in the first half of the twentieth century, the book was considered offensive or unsuitable for the public. The character of Lady Chatterley, through an affair with a gamekeeper Oliver, rediscovers her sexuality, and makes some realisations about her mental and physical needs. In the crude language, Lawrence captured something new and challenging to the public consensus on a decent culture. Consequently, a trial of 1960 under the Obscene Publications Act 1959 meant a break with old values, allowing the book to be viewed as a text of a literary merit, and recognising wider changes of social norms. It coincided with beginnings of the sexual revolution, greater freedoms in publishing and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 49. Notice To Defendant Summary Johnson further contends that the circuit court abused its discretion by failing to exclude the Notice to Defendant and the OPD Form because the documents probative value was substantially outweighed by the danger of unfair prejudice. Specifically, Johnson asserts that the documents should have been excluded because they indicate that he had a pending criminal case, and that they indicate that he is indigent. The State, for its part, asserts that the documents were critical to establish that the contraband at issue here belonged to Johnson, and that any prejudice may have suffered did not substantially outweigh the evidence s probative value. We agree with the State. Although a judge has no discretion to admit irrelevant evidence, a judge does have considerable discretion to exclude evidence if its probative value is substantially outweighed by the danger of unfair prejudice, confusion of the issues, or misleading the jury, or by considerations of undue delay, waste of time, or needless presentation of cumulative evidence.
