Analysis Of The Motif Of Black Invisibility, By Michelle...
"Blackness": An Invisible Disposition Explored Through Free Enterprise and Invisible Man
As observed throughout history and various societies, the notion of a "racial hierarchy" proves to be a superficial design which ultimately assigns
value to a group of people based solely upon their skin color. As a result, certain groups are promptly associated with influence and supremacy, while
others are disregarded in their "inherent" inferiority. Michelle Cliff's Free Enterprise and Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man approach this paradigm by
facilitating their readers' understandings regarding the debilitating ostracism associated with the social construct of "blackness," as well as the
metaphorical societal invisibility that is suffered as a result. In Free Enterprise, Cliff's implementation of the motif of black invisibility is prevalent
throughout the depiction of a leper colony. In the literal sense, the colony serves the purpose of preventing those with leprosy, a disease which
"flourishes among the darker races," from infecting the rest of the general populace (Cliff 35). In the metaphorical sense, however, its existence in the
work is meant to represent the estrangement and containment of marginalized people from the other, "superior" society. Through the eyes of Annie
Christmas, the channel of the narrator's observations, the "numericalized" lepers are described as a secreted and unknown people, "hidden away as she
had hidden herself" (Cliff 42). In the colony, there is

Analysis Of The Play ' The Play Of Sweet Town '
Production Report
The Play of Sweet town is set in a small country town in the mid–1960s, Sweetown explores Australia's uneasy relationship with the darker aspects of
our national history. It deals with themes of, Australian history, memories, change, denial, reconciliation, identity, guilt. The writer Melissa Reeve's
purpose for its creation was to bring to attention and satirise the history that happened and was forgotten many years ago. The set is minimalistic,
sparse and Non–realistic, with open space in the middle to reflect the outback and the use of some 1960s set pieces such as chairs to indicate the era.
The style of the play is a satire, which is a form of comedy that can also be found at the heart of more serious drama. Its ... Show more content on

The purpose of Ralph in the play is one that unintentionally takes the good guy down, he is the betrayal of the story, and he deals with themes of
change and guilt. Ralphs key objective in the play is to help but the motivation behind that is to be important that is his main driving force. My
rehearsal technique of getting into character was quite extensive, along with regular rehearsal, I and the others on stage would do improvisation in
our characters and build a back story with each other to better cement our chemistry. I wrote a back story for the character and tried to work out what
he would do on a daily basis, that along with watching a number of different videos from the time period and listening to music form the 1960s time
period really helped me find my character.
The means through which I showed my character was through the tone of voice and the body language directed towards the other person. One the
first night of performance my acting was much more skewered to the side of realism, with a stern and authority voice directed towards the characters
at the apex club, with body language which was at times antagonising with arms directed to the person or person's I was speaking to. While I was
talking to characters such as Veronica or Jack, a stern yet

The Crucible Character Analysis
Liam Ryan Mr. Healy Eng 2. Honors The Crucible Arthur Miller The main character, John Proctor proves himself an honest, level headed, dignified
man who is broken down but never lets go of his name showing that his reputation is more important than his life. For example, he cannot escape the
adultery he committed with Abigail. Proctor tries to ignore this, but during the trials, Proctor realizes that the only way to stop Abigail would be to
confess his adultery. Proctor cannot ruin his reputation, he wants to maintain his dignity, however, as the trails begin to lead to more and more deaths,
Proctor has no choice. Furthermore, after he is thrown in jail, he continues go down a downward spiral. Proctor is forced to admit working with Satan
to save himself and others that will be hanged. He loses self–respect because he must lie and act like a fool just to survive. In addition, when given a
paper to sign, Proctor cannot sign it. Although he gave up his soul, his name is all he has left and he cannot give it up and he tears up the paper and
chooses to hang. Being a good man, Proctor will never give up is name. To him, giving up his name means giving up his dignity, without it he is
nothing, so he would rather die with dignity, than live with nothing. With all the characters of The Crucible, there are many plot points to focus on, but

Lord Of The Flies Character Analysis
The first character that readers are introduced to in William Golding's Lord of the Flies is Ralph, a young British boy with fair skin and an
athletic build. Ralph is shown to have a child like personality at first; the first thing he does is strip and run into the ocean to swim, and as he looks
around he is excited by the prospect of his very own undiscovered island without adults around. However, despite the childish and innocent side of
his personality, Ralph is a natural leader and is quickly elected as such by the boys on the island after he calls a meeting by blowing on a conch
shell. As the chief of the island, Ralph suggests that the boys build a signal fire at the top of the mountain on the island in case a passing boat or plane
might see it and save them. Ralph and three other other boys, Jack, Simon, and Piggy, all hike to the top of the mountain, but when they are about to
make their signal fire, none of them know how to start it without having any matches– until Jack points to Piggy. Piggy is a fat boy with asthma and
glasses with frames that "had made a deep, pink V on the bridge [of his nose]", he is the most educated of the boys, but is often ignored or made
fun of; his glasses are an essential part of him and his identity. Piggy's glasses are also important to the boys in the book because they are used to start
the signal fire, signally the start of civilization on their island; Piggy's glasses become a symbol of advancement, innovation, and civilization.

The Good Soldier Analysis
Within the novel The Good Soldier, by Ford Maddox Ford, narration serves as an imperative framing mechanism for propelling the plot of the story,
while also generating the fragmentation necessary for maintaining the unclarity that pervades John's story. By both subtly positioning the narrator John
Dowell as an outsider relative to the other characters, and consequently emphasizing the notion of being outside, Ford facilitates a pointillistic
representation of the infidelities that characterize his story. Not only does Ford distance Dowell from the other characters in his narrative, but he also
prompts the reader to reject John as an omnipotent, reliable source, thereby provoking the former to rely on interpretation as the primary means for
finding resolution. Emphasizing several factors that distinguish John from the other characters, such as his nationality, his inclusion in and knowledge
of the infidelitous relationships, his personality type, his future reflective standpoint, and his tendency to infuse his current attitudes and nostalgia into
his retelling of this story, Ford employs narration as the essential mechanism for framing the story.
Initially denoting both his position as an outsider, and his efforts to justify the abhorrent, adulterous, behavior of Edward Ashburnham and Florence,
Dowell frames himself as an American who is merely observing British culture. While establishing himself within his story, Dowell claims that the
adulterous affair "is, I believe, a state of things only possible with English people of whom, till today, when I sit down to puzzle out what I know of this
sad affair, I knew nothing whatever," proceeding to concede that "Six months ago [he] had never been to England" (13). That Ford notes this distinction
on the first page of the narrative forces the reader to immediately consider John as a relative outsider in the story, a notion that is compounded by the
latter's constantly identifying cultural differences between himself and the Ashburnhams. By conceding that he had not even traveled to England prior
to his experience with the Ashburnhams, Dowell implicitly frames their cultural differences as responsible for Edward Ashburnham's infidelitous
tendencies and Leonora's

Savagery
In William Goldings Lord of the Flies the boy's human nature shifts into savagery without a civilization to keep them in order. The first character
to start the slow descent into savagery is Ralph who because of his continual battle for power with Jack, uses violence to settle disputes, contributes
to the killing of Simon, and emulates a wild animal to survive. Roger who rejects the idea of civilization from the start instills fear in younger tribe
members, kills Piggy, and plans the brutal sacrifice of Ralph. Finally, Jack adapts a ruthless way of leading allowing an obsession with hunting as he
segregates his tribe from civilization and leads the hunt for Ralph. The fall towards savagery of these three characters in a leadership role leads... Show

While arguing, "Ralph hit Jack in the stomach and made him grunt. Then they were facing each other panting and furious, but unnerved by each
other's ferocity." Ralph losses sight of his own civility, causing him to drastically act out in savagery. Jack does not take the act of defiance lightly.
Giving him yet another reason to have his tribe turn against Ralph. Next, Ralph again loses his civility in a moment of savagery thus contributing to the
killing of Simon. Ralph who is leading his tribe into a better civilization turns into a savage with his group closely following his lead. They murder
Simon, this being significant because he showed the most civility and was only trying to help when he approached the group of savages. Instead the,
"memory of the dance that none of them attended shook all 4 boys convulsively." All the boys in Ralph's tribe deny their involvement because they
can't come to terms with what they did to one of their friends. Ralph may have stood on the outside and never stabbed Simon, but he also never
attempts to stop the dance. As the leader he should have intervened. This act has a predominant effect on

The True Maeaning of Invisiblity
With the title that Ralph Ellison chose for this book one could easily conclude, without even reading it, that the text is science fiction and deals with
the super natural. Upon actually reading it however it becomes painfully obvious that the main character of "Invisible Man" is quite visible indeed.
Fictional or not, he is a regular human being made of flesh and bone, and he even says so in the first sentences of the book. So how can this black
man possibly deem himself invisible? Perhaps this nameless protagonist cannot be blamed completely for this freak occurrence. Maybe the invisibility
stems from a lack of sight of the people (mainly white) around him. Those people allow themselves to be blinded by the semitransparent veil of
stereotypes and racism, causing them not to be able to see the protagonist/narrator for who he really is. With that being said, the narrator himself still
has a part to play in this so called invisibility. Throughout the story the narrator's actions cause people to see him as someone he is not. It seems as
though every time there is about to be a turning point in the narrator's life his good ambitions are tampered with by the cruel intentions of those around
him.
The genres of this work appear to be African American literature, satire, and in a sense it is a coming–of–age kind of story. As such, the story follows
the narrator's life during the great migration/Harlem Renaissance era and has many different locations. It starts off in the

12th Man Essay

to identify fans as '12th man'." Sport Marketing Quarterly, 16, 115–117.
The legal dispute between the National Football League's Seattle Seahawks and Texas A&M University over the exploitation of the slogan "12th Man"
is not only a respectable example of the significance of brand loyalty, but it is also an important case that proves the importance of having a strong
brand equity. Both sport organizations take considerable pride in their supporters and fans, who they realize is the backbone of their success as an
organization/ corporation. Texas A&M University's claim over the use of the phrase "12th Man" was arguable but they stood their ground when the
Seahawks defied the University's letter to discontinue their usage of the phrase. The TAMU Vice President for Communications was protected under
the Federal Trademark Act of 1946, which had the purpose of defending the right of the owner to protect the mark that symbolizes their respective
organization. The case between the two warring sport properties (which was ultimately settled out of court) proved the importance of brand equity and
the benefits of it as well–one major benefit being the licensing and merchandising opportunities to sell to other organizations. In exchange for the
Seahawks to use the 12th man trademark, they had to pay a $100,000 licensing fee plus, publicly

Lord Of The Flies Conflict Analysis
In the text Lord of the Flies by William Golding, a group of schoolboys become stranded on a deserted island with no adult supervision, this in turn
causes conflict within the group. Golding uses the conflict to help me understand the individuals in the text. This gave me a greater insight and
understanding of their characters. The first time Golding illustrates the conflict between Jack and Ralph, is in chapter one when they experience their
encounter. Through this, it helped me to establish the obvious difference in opinion andleadership. The first major conflict I identified was when it
came to electing a chief. "I ought to be chief." Jack believed that he was the best option as he thinks of himself of having superiority, because he was
blessed with a previous life as being authority figure, leader of the choir. I recognised this distinctly as he wants to be called "merridew" his
surname. However, when it came to votes Jack's choir was unable to override the other school boys, and Ralph was elected chief due to his natural
leadership presence and "a stillness about Ralph... that marked him out." Jack was described by Golding as "this was the voice of one who knew his
own mind" so it was evident that he had already framed himself as a leader. This disappointment and anger was easily recognisable as he continued to
interrupt Ralph, clearly illustrating that he was jealous of the authority Ralph had above him. In reaction Ralph recognised this hatred and tried to keep

Female and male are two fundamental sectors of humanity. Anima and animus are psychologist Carl Jung's way to describe the feminine and

Hamlet's mind never stops working. His dialogues are majorly infested with unraveled philosophies and understandings of the essence of human life:
"the whips and scorns of time / Th' oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely / The pangs of disprized love, the law's delay / The insolence of

rather, they project shadows upon Hamlet's determination to avenge by glazing his lenses with a pessimistic perception of life. As a result, Hamlet
questions the necessity of killing Claudius and fails to settle the revenge accordingly to his father's will. The perfect foil character for the audience to
collate against Hamlet's feminine mentality is Hamlet himself. His character is an amalgamation of contrasting personalities: good and bad, feminine
and masculine. The prince's masculinity is discerned in the courage that lifts his steps when the ghost of Old Hamlet told him to go to a more isolated

Letter From A Birmingham Jail Rhetorical Analysis
While Martin Luther King Jr. was locked up in a jail he received a letter from eight clergymen. They reached out to King in a letter that is called "A
Call for Unity." In this letter, they are telling king that people needed to stand up and try to make a change by peaceful protesting to get their point
across ("A Call for Unity"). King then replies to their letter with a letter of his own which is known as "Letter from a Birmingham Jail." King states
that he gets a lot of letters and doesn't reply to them but he thought that the clergymen meant good so he would try to answer their questions to the best
of his ability (King). Also in the letter, he focuses on what is going on in Birmingham at the time and tells about himself and how he oversaw a lot of
planning comities (King). In the "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" King uses three main ways to connect with the audience of the letter and those are
ethos, pathos, and logos.
Ethos can be a very effective way of reaching out to the people, because it is showing what kind of person that you are and in a way what is
expected out of you. Ethos is sometimes most affective at the begging of the letter because it is laying out the background of the author. King states "I
have the honor of serving as president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference..." (King). When King made this statement towards the
beginning of his letter it was showing that he had power over people. Not only was he showing that he had power he was also showing that he was
a Christian and worked with others to do something that they believed in. King then goes on to state "I cannot sit by idly by in Atlanta and not be
concerned about what happens in Birmingham". Some people may not understand why I would label this ethos, I label it that way because he is
showing that he cares about things that is a distance away from him and he does not just care about what is happening in the city that he is currently
living in. By King saying that he is a Christian people would expect a lot out of him, because he a person that people look up to daily. King is also a
person that people would go to for advice with him being a president.
Pathos in my opinion could be one of the best ways to connect with your

Essay On Invisible Man
People often describe a point in their life where suddenly everything becomes clear. It may be an epiphany, offering meaning, purpose, or a path to
self–discovery. One event, conversation, or action may result in an illuminating moment changing the course of one's life. Oliver Wendell Holmes, a
nineteenth century American poet, describes the lasting effects of this phenomena, "a moment's insight is sometimes worth a life's experience". The
narrator, in Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man, experiences this life– altering moment when he is ensnarled in a race riot. Observing the violence, protests,
and destruction surrounding him, he suddenly realizes he has failed himself and his race, those who once looked up to him now deem him responsible

He tells the narrator, "'you're nobody, son. You don't exist

Modernist Movement in Ford's Good Soldier and Woolf's...
Ford Madox Ford and Virginia Woolf were major contributors to the modernist movement. They, as well as others (such as James Joyce), were trying
something new, by breaking down the boundaries of traditional writing. Ford's Good Soldier and Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway are two particular examples
of the genre. These novels were not well–received in their own time. As time went on, however, the attitudes of the literary world changed and were
able to finally see these works for what they really are – exemplary pieces of fiction, certainly worth merit.
The Good Soldier was first published in 1915. Rebecca West penned a promising review for the year, ending with "Indeed, this is a much, much better

He questions Dowell's mental balance because he degrades Florence, his wife, for her indiscretions. Edward Ashburnham is guilty of the very same
things, yet he is still regarded as "good people." He also wonders at "the meaning of the narrator's nearly phobic concern with Catholicism, or of the
way in which his slurs at Leonora are justified by her attachment to that persuasion"(46).
If the implication is that John Dowell is crazy, Schorer is failing to see other psychological reasons why a man such as Dowell would think this way.
It is evident that our narrator has not fully processed all of the events before he begins to tell of them. In addition, Dowell obviously wants to continue
thinking highly of Ashburnham the "good soldier," and this completes John's psychological quandary. At the very least, Schorer recognizes the merit of
The Good Soldier, and his essay appears to understand the deliberate complexities of the novel.
Charles Hoffman likens The Good Soldier to an allegory, "the breakup of civilization itself, heading toward disaster" (53). Even while the quartet is
falling apart, however, they still put on the proverbial brave face and, to all outward appearances, are just fine. This can be applied to the world at
large. Ford also exposes the evil kernel within the hearts of mankind. To others, these are "good people," but they hold

Essay Characterization in The Good Soldier
In The Good Soldier, Ford Maddox Ford does not fully develop any of the characters. The reader is intended to use the narrator Dowell's
disconnected and inaccurate impressions to build a more complete version of who the characters are, as well as form a more accurate view of what
actually happens with "the sad affair" (Ford 9) of Dowell's pathetic life. This use of a single character's various perceptions creates a work that
follows the style of literary impressionism, which, to some extent, should be only a series of personal impressions that culminates in the portrayal of
reality as "a subjective experience" (van Gunsteren 239). This very subjectivity of reality is clearly evident in Dowell's perception of other people and
events.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He also says that her heart had made him lead the life "of the sedulous, strained nurse" (13), constantly needing to watch her and protect her from
anything that might possibly excite her or cause damage to her heart. While this apparently constrictive relationship could be construed as
irritating, Dowell does not seem to have any objection to the role Florence has given him, even when he later realizes that she had faked her heart
condition to manipulate him. For the most part, Florence even inspires some degree of pity in him, and she often becomes "poor dear Florence"
(12) in his mind. That he is capable of pity for such a manipulative person is only explained by his oblivious nature. This particular version of
Florence shows the full extent of his lack of understanding as he attempts to explain things to himself. It also shows the degree of his gullibility.
Dowell also describes Florence as weak and simple–minded, saying that "she was bright and she danced" (17). This portrays Florence as an essentially
superficial person. However, this superficiality does not really say anything directly about Florence, but illustrates what Thomas C. Moser phrases as
"Dowell's conviction of the meaninglessness of existence" (Moser 354). Dowell's life consists entirely of a series of dinners and teas, none of which he

Essay on the Genius of Ralph Ellison
The Genius of Ralph Ellison
I am an invisible man. With these five words, Ralph Ellison ignited the literary world with a work that commanded the respect of scholars everywhere
and opened the floodgates for dialogue about the role of African–Americans in American society, the blindness that drove the nation to prejudice, and
racial pluralism as a forum for recognizing the interconnection between all members of society regardless of race.
I am invisible, understand, simply because people refuse to see me. . . . That invisibility to which I refer occurs because of a peculiar disposition of the
eyes of those with whom I come in contact. A matter of the construction of their inner eyes, those eyes with which they look through... Show more

He became a wartime correspondent and his literary works and articles were favorably reviewed. Jazz was still a major influence in his life and he
used jazz themes and lyrics throughout his works. A voracious reader,Ellison became attuned to the stylistic nuances of Emerson, Kafka, Joyce, and
T.S. Eliot and his works seem to reflect the melding of such literary giants with the rich heritage of music, language, and belief in the African–American
culture.
Invisible Man won the National Book Award in 1953, a year after its publication. The book was widely seen as the first great African
–American work
to completely penetrate literary circles without being condescendingly regarded as "good black literature." The complexity of the characters, the events,
and the symbolism of the book launched Ellison to a status enjoyed by his peers Faulkner, Joyce, and others. Ellison's ingenuity in constructing the
invisible man, his world, and his interactions created an American masterwork that transcended race.
To call Invisible Man great literature would be addressing only the intellectual and artistic value of the work. Invisible Man became a catalyst for a
larger societal movement toward recognizing the value of African–Americans as an intrinsic part of American culture. Ellison's work also propelled
discussion about racial pluralism. The nameless character was irrevocably human

Lord Of The Flies Teamwork Vs Independence Essay
I believe that being in a group is much more beneficial than being independent. Throughout the book lord of the flies there are two tribes who
represent teamwork versus independence. There is Ralph's tribe who are democratic and work as a group for survival. Then on the other side there is
Jacks tribe where everyone is free to do whatever they want. The definition of teamwork is "The process of working collaboratively with a group of
people in order to achieve a goal". This ties in perfectly with the novel because Ralph's tribe is working together and sharing ideas to achieve their
goal of getting rescued. There are three reasons why I believe working in a group is better than being independent. The first reason is that two heads
are always better than one. The second is that teamwork allows people to accomplish projects and goals which are difficult to do alone. My final
reason is that teamwork builds morale.

Lord Of The Flies Chapter 1 Analysis Essay
Write an analysis of the opening chapter of the novel. How successfully does Golding convey the positive and negative aspects of the island and
mans impact on it? During chapter 1 Golding portrays the island and mans impact on it in both positive and negative ways. He also uses many
literary devices when showing these aspects. The first positive image is shown when ralph describes the granite as being "Like icing" "on a pink
cake" the colour pink in this similie presents beauty and happiness and "icing" reinforces the happiness. However this could be interpreted negatively as
the hunger of the boys at this time. Additionally positivity and beauty are both presented in "The air was filled with butterflies, lifting, fluttering and
settling." This shows the happiness of the boys at this time. Another positive image... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

and they understand that the best way to go about this is democratically. Ralph is also smart and diplomatic when he devolves power to his main
competitor, Jack in "Jack's in charge of the choir". Ralph asserts his power when he disallows piggy from going on the scouting trip but he does so
reasonably in "Now go back, piggy, and take names. That's your job, so long". Also the scouting adventure was a very good idea. Ralph is
presented positively through the metaphor "Ralph's golden body" showing he is in good condition physically and being called "golden" suggests
purity and health. Ralph is also depicted as a good person in "but there was a mildness about his mouth and eyes that proclaimed no devil" this also
links with the other religious imagery within the book. The play is ambivalent as is also shows a very negative side to the

The White Men Have Intentions Opposite Of Those From...
I. The white men have intentions opposite of those from Invisible Mans. IM is merely an entertainer or comedy act for the wealthy white men.
In Twarie's article, he discusses an element of moral and emotional ambiguity to the novel, contributing to the mode of questioning that dominates it.
Symbolic situations are illuminated in Ellison's novel such as the Battle Royal, and the boxing match which give rise to the stereotypes we see
throughout the chapter (196).
When the IM first arrived at the ballroom, he was under the impression that because he was there anyway, he might as well take part in the battle royal
to be fought (Ellison 2). The Invisible Man suspected that fighting a battle royal might distract from the dignity of his speech. Tewarie tells us that the
Battle Royal scene emphasizes the essentially feudal nature of southern society in the relationship between the black, and the white men. Tewarie
emphasizes that "a black man cannot hope to be conceded his individuality nor his personhood" (193). As the chapter continues, we see how the white
men at the smoker treat the IM, and interact with him. Before the battle royal begins I can see that the Ellison forecasts an air of humility and social
responsibility– acknowledging social inequality.

Even though Ralph is a young teenage boy he still possesses the characteristics of a grown man. He shows us courage, responsibility, strength, hard

island out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The boys claim they were shot down, but no one knows for sure what had happened. Somehow
everyone survives the plane crash except for the pilot which means the youngsters were without any adult supervision. Ralph's childishness was soon

To make the mask a little more interesting I have created two flaps that cover the mask except for the two eye sockets. On the flaps you will see a
map of the island with much detail and color to represent the luscious landform and will provide the feeling of what's going on inside the island
once you reveal the flaps. Before you take a look inside though you will notice that I have not covered the eyes. Inside each eye you will see a symbol.
In the right eye I have drawn a picture of a boat sailing across the ocean and in the left I have drawn a bonfire. I Drew the reflection of the boat to
symbolize how eager Ralph is to get off the island and we can all see this by the way he blows up in Jack's face. And for the fire it represents and
shows that the boys need to respect and listen to each other if they want to survive. Now on to the inside. The first object that would catch my eye
when you look inside is the conch shell that is placed on the bottom middle of the mask. The conch shell represents peace and binds the boys
together to create a brotherhood. The shell is a light pinkish color with a mix of white to blend the emotions.I have also drawn a pair of sticks that
are on fire creating an "X" in the middle of the mask to symbolize strength and power. Above the two I have written the word "bravery" to show that
Ralph is willing to whatever it takes to lead his fellow schoolmates. On top of the mask you will notice a detailed crown with diamonds and jewels,
I drew this because it shows his leadership and responsibility he has granted to the group. The crown consists very rich and eye capturing colors.

Lord Of The Flies Character Analysis
William Golding's Lord of the Flies, gives a look at what life would be like without any rules of civilization and how society would be when
influenced by evil. Jack and Ralph battle to be the alpha male and to lead all young children to do what they think is best. Jack later decides that
Ralph's leading skills is aren't substantial and decides to break off into a new society, taking with him many followers. Ralph believes that
everyone's goal should be to get off the island while Jack believes their society should result to chaos and war. Jack wants to lead the whole island
to evil which make Ralph have to decide whether he should fall to evil or stay good. Jack's actions toward Ralph affects Ralph's outlook on life and
his choices. Jack's savage influence on Ralph's integrity represents how easily evil can corrupt society when impacted by wrongdoing. Jack's violent
instinct to kill the pig makes Ralph irritated and causes Ralph to lash out at Jack. Jack wants to kill the pig and Ralph wants to be rescued. When
Jack speaks to Ralph, Jack says, "There was lashings of blood, you shoulda seen it" Golding 69. Ralph becomes even more aggressive towards Jack

Analysis Of Social Inequality In Battle Royal By Ralph...
Social inequality seems to be more common in places you will not expect. The story "Battle Royal" By Ralph Ellison explains that a young boy
grows up to learn the harsh reality of being an invisible man. The author does this by putting the main character in the story, though situations that
make him realize that he is diminished from society. The meaning of the story is supported by the setting of where different things take place
throughout the story. Places such as the main ballroom played an important role. The ring of where the battle royal took place between the classmates
can also be looked at to see how the narrator explains his point. Towards the end is when the main character presents his speech in a harsh environment
that forces him to push his boundaries. These three settings throughout the story help the reader understand the meaning of the story that social
inequality can make someone become an invisible man. According to the story "Battle Royal" by Ralph Ellison, the settings differ between different
parts of the story. In the beginning when the passage states "It was in the main ballroom of the leading hotel... was told since I was to be there
anyway, I might as well take part in the battle royal to be fought by some of my schoolmates as part of the entertainment" (Ellison 205). The main
character finds himself having no choice but to do what he was told without a say about whether he would want to or not. This form of obedience of
social class between the African American boy and white men happens throughout the story. Ralph Elision continues to explain that the form of
entertainment was to watch the kids fight brutally in a bloodshed battle between African school boys. It all began when he was invited into the hotel
ballroom that he would begin being told what to do or what to say or act. The way the room was set up, put a boxing ring in front of a row of chairs
from all three sides. Immediately after the main character arrives to the boxing ring is when he faces a new challenge that he must overcome. This
fight between classmates has him worried that he might not even get a chance to give his speech. The author implies that the setting of the boxing ring
can intimidate anybody if there were

George bush Essay
I. INTRODUCTION
Bush, George Herbert Walker (1924– ), 41st president of the United States (1989–1993), president at the end of the Cold War between the United States
and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Bush also organized an unprecedented global alliance against Iraq during the Persian Gulf Warof
1991, but he was less successful in dealing with U.S. domestic problems and was defeated after one term by Bill Clinton in the 1992 election.
II. EARLY LIFE
Bush was born in Milton, Massachusetts, but grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut. His parents came from wealthy Midwestern families. His father,

In 1964 Bush ran for the U.S. Senate against Ralph Yarborough, the Democratic incumbent. Yarborough argued that Bush's views were too extreme,
and, like most Republican candidates that year, Bush was defeated in the landslide that accompanied the victory of Texas Democrat Lyndon B. Johnson
over U.S. Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona in the presidential election. Bush's strong showing in the firmly Democratic state, however, won the
attention of a former Republican vice president and U.S. senator from California, Richard Nixon. In 1966, with assistance from Nixon, an affluent
Houston district elected Bush to the U.S. House of Representatives, and reelected him in 1968.
In the Congress of the United States Bush identified with Republican moderates who were practical and business–oriented, approaches to which his
father had subscribed. He won a coveted seat on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee (which has jurisdiction over financial matters),
supported the extension of voting rights to 18–year–olds, and voted to abolish the military draft. After two terms, he gave up his seat in the House to
run again for the Senate, expecting to take on his old rival Ralph Yarborough. The Democrats, however, nominated a much more moderate candidate
instead, former congressman Lloyd Bentsen, who defeated Bush in the fall.

What Is The Theme Of Law And Order In Lord Of The Flies
William Goldings 'Lord of the Flies' represents the theme of Law and order throughout the novel. During the novel the group of the boys are stuck on
an island and some turn into savages. Golding uses symbolism, characters and actions to represent law and order.
The conch was the first thing to gather all the boys on the island, for a meeting. The boys then discussed how things should be done and they elect
to vote for a chief. "Him with the shell." Ralph, the fair haired, good looking boy is voted as chief. But he isn't voted chief because of his age,
leadership skills or any form of democracy. Ralph was voted in as chief because he was the one who blew the conch. The conch that would call the
boys to sort out and discuss all the problems that they would have over the months that the boys would spend on the island. During these meetings, the
conch didn't just call them, the conch allowed the holder to speak. To express their thoughts and ideas to all the other boys. But as soon as fear and
bloodthirst took over their minds, the conch didn't mean anything to them and once this happened there was no way of getting them back. Soon Jack,
Ralphs hunter, turned too and decided to start his own group. "Who'll join my tribe and have fun?" Boy by boy, more kids started to join Jacks tribe.
Eventually the conch smashes and all breaks loose on the island. The conch represented law and order on the island and once the conch was destroyed,
Ralph's rules went with it.

Lord Of The Flies Innocence Character Analysis
March from Innocence The author Lyman Abbott once said, "Every life is a march from innocence, through temptations, to virtue or vice" (qtd. in
Brainy Quote). This march, as Abbott puts it, is maturation. Inevitably, everyone must experience these phases, ending either in, the iconic, good or
evil. The novel, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, examines these very steps. More specifically, Golding displays through the character Ralph; the
phases of psychological maturity. Ralph throughout his experiences on the island will progress and digress in maturity. Ralph will begin as a carefree,
innocent child–happy to be away from constraints of society. However, through certain events, Ralph will grow to become a leader and choose to stay
morally good, while the boys around him digress in evil. More specifically, events that illustrate Ralphs, responsibility, assertiveness, honesty,
detachment, and understanding lead to his complete maturation. Stranded on an island with no supervision, Ralph does what any child would do, " he
stood on his head and grinned"(Golding 8). Ralph's immaturity is marked by this reaction of being without adult supervision. Like any child, he finds
pleasure in doing what he wants and strips his clothes and plays around. Though Ralph displays childlike attributes now, he will experience steps that
begin his maturation process. The first step Ralph experiences is responsibility. An example; when the boys' first crash on the island and everyone strays,

Good Morning Midnight By Jean Rhys
Jean Rhys, the author of Good Morning Midnight, wrote about women with sense and sensitivity in mostly controversial ways. Rhys was born in
Dominica in eighteen ninety–four. She came to England at the age of sixteen and hovered on many jobs before she moved to Paris, where she began
writing and was found by Ford Maddox Ford.
About the essay question and theme, of the representation of women in the city, I believe Rhys exposes the restrictive attitudes places upon women in
the town rather than perpetuating them. Her novels, often showed women as underdogs out to exploit their sexualities, which shows they were ahead
of their time. Once Good Morning Midnight was written she lived reclusively and was largely forgotten.
In 'Good Morning Midnight' Sasha's story moves back and forth, her outlook shifting from her time in London to Paris. She remembers when she

is from the way she appears. This could suggest that Rhys acknowledges that it is not just men who treat women unequally, but it is also women who

Lord of the Flies Speech
Who is ultimately responsible for the destruction of the island in lord of the flies?
"Shut up," said Ralph absently. He lifted the conch. "Seems to me we ought to have a chief to decide things." ... Good morning Mrs Downes and
class, every civilisation needs a leader or a chief without one, it would deteriorate into utter chaos. William Golding shows early on that a natural born
leader is amongst the mix of boys on the island whether he leads the boys to their rescue or demise only his actions and decisions will tell. Ralph is
responsible for the island's decline because his poor leadership skills result in nothing getting done and the island breaking into splinter groups. From
the beginning, Jack edges for power against Ralph. Unlike Ralph, Jack has some leadership skills. Ralphs claim to leadership is his good looks and that
he was the one who first blew the conch. Yet Ralph is voted leader.
At the beginning of the novel, Golding depicts Ralph as the natural leader. However his only claim to leadership is his good looks, and that he, first

natural propensity for leadership as he is confident, eloquent and attractive. Additionally, on page 31 Ralph progresses to the realisation that the boys

Is Ralph A Good Leader Essay
What makes up a leader? In the book Lord of the Flies, whose author is William Golding, this question wasn't well thought through before a leader was
chosen. Though the main characters are only little kids, they had a challenging choice they had to make; they had not the slightest idea that the choice
that they would make might amount to some of them losing their lives. In the Lord of the Flies, a group of boys from an all–boys school,
crash–landed on an inhabited island. Upon arriving on the island, they had to choose who would be chief. Mostly everybody chose the same kid as
a chief. Though, only a handful of boys, the choir boys were loyal to their choir leader, Jack, voted him as chief. Yet the result was the same, Ralph
was chief. The reason behind why the kids nominated Ralph chief was because he looked more appealing than jack and he seemed to know what to
do. Like for instance, the kids were bewildered when they saw that Ralph had the conch in his hands and that he was not the "man with a trumpet."
Then they realized that Ralph was "the man with the trumpet" and perceived that he would make a fine leader. I say overall: his honesty, his ability to...

Interpretation In Ford Madox Ford's The Good Soldier
Within the novel The Good Soldier, by Ford Madox Ford, narration serves as an imperative framing mechanism for propelling the plot of the story,
while also generating the fragmentation necessary for maintaining the unclarity that pervades John's story.
While establishing himself within his story, Dowell claims that the
adulterous affair "is, I believe, a state of things only possible with English people of whom, till today, when I sit down to puzzle out what I know of this
sad affair, I knew nothing whatever," proceeding to concede that "Six months ago [he] had never been to England" (Ford, 13). That Ford notes this
distinction on the first page of the narrative forces the reader to immediately consider John as a relative outsider in the story, a notion that is
compounded by the latter's constantly identifying cultural differences between himself and the Ashburnhams. By conceding that he had not even
traveled to England prior to his experience with the Ashburnhams, Dowell implicitly frames their cultural differences as responsible for Edward
Ashburnham's infidelitous tendencies and Leonora's

Regulatory Oversight And Recall Of President Lyndon B....
Regulatory Oversight and Recall Congress began to hold high–profile hearings on automobile safety in 1965. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson
signed both the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act and the Highway Safety Act into law. The two bills gave the federal government
authority to set and enforce safety standards for vehicles and roads. The NTMVSA was the first legislation mandating federal safety standards for
motor vehicles. Although the safety standards in the NTMVSA were watered down in response to industry lobbyists, it required important safety
features that the current generation of car drivers would never expect to be absent from a vehicle: "seat belts for every passenger, impact–absorbing
steering wheels, rupture–resistant fuel tanks, door latches that stayed latched in crashes, side–view mirrors, shatter–resistant windshields, windshield
defrosters, lights on the sides of cars as well as the front and back, and 'the padding and softening of interior surfaces and protrusions.'" (History.com)
Also in 1966, two new government agencies–the National Traffic Safety Agency and the National Highway Safety Agency–were created to carry out
the safety programs authorized under the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act and the Highway Safety Act. The two agencies were
consolidated in 1970 and became the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ("NHTSA"). NHTSA is responsible for reducing deaths, injuries
and economic losses resulting from

Analysis Of The Motif Of Black Invisibility, By Michelle...

  • 1. Analysis Of The Motif Of Black Invisibility, By Michelle... "Blackness": An Invisible Disposition Explored Through Free Enterprise and Invisible Man As observed throughout history and various societies, the notion of a "racial hierarchy" proves to be a superficial design which ultimately assigns value to a group of people based solely upon their skin color. As a result, certain groups are promptly associated with influence and supremacy, while others are disregarded in their "inherent" inferiority. Michelle Cliff's Free Enterprise and Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man approach this paradigm by facilitating their readers' understandings regarding the debilitating ostracism associated with the social construct of "blackness," as well as the metaphorical societal invisibility that is suffered as a result. In Free Enterprise, Cliff's implementation of the motif of black invisibility is prevalent throughout the depiction of a leper colony. In the literal sense, the colony serves the purpose of preventing those with leprosy, a disease which "flourishes among the darker races," from infecting the rest of the general populace (Cliff 35). In the metaphorical sense, however, its existence in the work is meant to represent the estrangement and containment of marginalized people from the other, "superior" society. Through the eyes of Annie Christmas, the channel of the narrator's observations, the "numericalized" lepers are described as a secreted and unknown people, "hidden away as she had hidden herself" (Cliff 42). In the colony, there is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Analysis Of The Play ' The Play Of Sweet Town ' Production Report The Play of Sweet town is set in a small country town in the mid–1960s, Sweetown explores Australia's uneasy relationship with the darker aspects of our national history. It deals with themes of, Australian history, memories, change, denial, reconciliation, identity, guilt. The writer Melissa Reeve's purpose for its creation was to bring to attention and satirise the history that happened and was forgotten many years ago. The set is minimalistic, sparse and Non–realistic, with open space in the middle to reflect the outback and the use of some 1960s set pieces such as chairs to indicate the era. The style of the play is a satire, which is a form of comedy that can also be found at the heart of more serious drama. Its ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The purpose of Ralph in the play is one that unintentionally takes the good guy down, he is the betrayal of the story, and he deals with themes of change and guilt. Ralphs key objective in the play is to help but the motivation behind that is to be important that is his main driving force. My rehearsal technique of getting into character was quite extensive, along with regular rehearsal, I and the others on stage would do improvisation in our characters and build a back story with each other to better cement our chemistry. I wrote a back story for the character and tried to work out what he would do on a daily basis, that along with watching a number of different videos from the time period and listening to music form the 1960s time period really helped me find my character. The means through which I showed my character was through the tone of voice and the body language directed towards the other person. One the first night of performance my acting was much more skewered to the side of realism, with a stern and authority voice directed towards the characters at the apex club, with body language which was at times antagonising with arms directed to the person or person's I was speaking to. While I was talking to characters such as Veronica or Jack, a stern yet ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Honors The Crucible Arthur Miller The main character, John Proctor proves himself an honest, level headed, dignified man who is broken down but never lets go of his name showing that his reputation is more important than his life. For example, he cannot escape the adultery he committed with Abigail. Proctor tries to ignore this, but during the trials, Proctor realizes that the only way to stop Abigail would be to confess his adultery. Proctor cannot ruin his reputation, he wants to maintain his dignity, however, as the trails begin to lead to more and more deaths, Proctor has no choice. Furthermore, after he is thrown in jail, he continues go down a downward spiral. Proctor is forced to admit working with Satan to save himself and others that will be hanged. He loses self–respect because he must lie and act like a fool just to survive. In addition, when given a paper to sign, Proctor cannot sign it. Although he gave up his soul, his name is all he has left and he cannot give it up and he tears up the paper and chooses to hang. Being a good man, Proctor will never give up is name. To him, giving up his name means giving up his dignity, without it he is nothing, so he would rather die with dignity, than live with nothing. • 4. Lord Of The Flies Character Analysis The first character that readers are introduced to in William Golding's Lord of the Flies is Ralph, a young British boy with fair skin and an athletic build. Ralph is shown to have a child like personality at first; the first thing he does is strip and run into the ocean to swim, and as he looks around he is excited by the prospect of his very own undiscovered island without adults around. However, despite the childish and innocent side of his personality, Ralph is a natural leader and is quickly elected as such by the boys on the island after he calls a meeting by blowing on a conch shell. As the chief of the island, Ralph suggests that the boys build a signal fire at the top of the mountain on the island in case a passing boat or plane might see it and save them. Ralph and three other other boys, Jack, Simon, and Piggy, all hike to the top of the mountain, but when they are about to make their signal fire, none of them know how to start it without having any matches– until Jack points to Piggy. Piggy is a fat boy with asthma and glasses with frames that "had made a deep, pink V on the bridge [of his nose]", he is the most educated of the boys, but is often ignored or made fun of; his glasses are an essential part of him and his identity. Piggy's glasses are also important to the boys in the book because they are used to start the signal fire, signally the start of civilization on their island; Piggy's glasses become a symbol of advancement, innovation, and civilization. ... • 7. Savagery In William Goldings Lord of the Flies the boy's human nature shifts into savagery without a civilization to keep them in order. The first character to start the slow descent into savagery is Ralph who because of his continual battle for power with Jack, uses violence to settle disputes, contributes to the killing of Simon, and emulates a wild animal to survive. Roger who rejects the idea of civilization from the start instills fear in younger tribe members, kills Piggy, and plans the brutal sacrifice of Ralph. Next, Ralph again loses his civility in a moment of savagery thus contributing to the killing of Simon. • 8. The True Maeaning of Invisiblity With the title that Ralph Ellison chose for this book one could easily conclude, without even reading it, that the text is science fiction and deals with the super natural. Upon actually reading it however it becomes painfully obvious that the main character of "Invisible Man" is quite visible indeed. Fictional or not, he is a regular human being made of flesh and bone, and he even says so in the first sentences of the book. So how can this black man possibly deem himself invisible? Perhaps this nameless protagonist cannot be blamed completely for this freak occurrence. Maybe the invisibility stems from a lack of sight of the people (mainly white) around him. Those people allow themselves to be blinded by the semitransparent veil of stereotypes and racism, causing them not to be able to see the protagonist/narrator for who he really is. With that being said, the narrator himself still has a part to play in this so called invisibility. Throughout the story the narrator's actions cause people to see him as someone he is not. It seems as though every time there is about to be a turning point in the narrator's life his good ambitions are tampered with by the cruel intentions of those around him. The genres of this work appear to be African American literature, satire, and in a sense it is a coming–of–age kind of story. As such, the story follows the narrator's life during the great migration/Harlem Renaissance era and has many different locations. It starts off in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. 12th Man Essay Brown, M. T., Zuefle, D. M. & Batista, P. J. (2007). "Will the real 12th man please stand up? Texas a&m and seattle seahawks settle dispute over right to identify fans as '12th man'." Sport Marketing Quarterly, 16, 115–117. The legal dispute between the National Football League's Seattle Seahawks and Texas A&M University over the exploitation of the slogan "12th Man" is not only a respectable example of the significance of brand loyalty, but it is also an important case that proves the importance of having a strong brand equity. Both sport organizations take considerable pride in their supporters and fans, who they realize is the backbone of their success as an organization/ corporation. Texas A&M University's claim over the use of the phrase "12th Man" was arguable but they stood their ground when the Seahawks defied the University's letter to discontinue their usage of the phrase. The TAMU Vice President for Communications was protected under the Federal Trademark Act of 1946, which had the purpose of defending the right of the owner to protect the mark that symbolizes their respective organization. The case between the two warring sport properties (which was ultimately settled out of court) proved the importance of brand equity and the benefits of it as well–one major benefit being the licensing and merchandising opportunities to sell to other organizations. In exchange for the Seahawks to use the 12th man trademark, they had to pay a $100,000 licensing fee plus, publicly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The first time Golding illustrates the conflict between Jack and Ralph, is in chapter one when they experience their encounter. Through this, it helped me to establish the obvious difference in opinion andleadership. The first major conflict I identified was when it came to electing a chief. "I ought to be chief." Jack believed that he was the best option as he thinks of himself of having superiority, because he was blessed with a previous life as being authority figure, leader of the choir. I recognised this distinctly as he wants to be called "merridew" his surname. However, when it came to votes Jack's choir was unable to override the other school boys, and Ralph was elected chief due to his natural leadership presence and "a stillness about Ralph... that marked him out." Jack was described by Golding as "this was the voice of one who knew his own mind" so it was evident that he had already framed himself as a leader. This disappointment and anger was easily recognisable as he continued to interrupt Ralph, clearly illustrating that he was jealous of the authority Ralph had above him. In reaction Ralph recognised this hatred and tried to keep ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The blurred border between these subdivisions implements the need to search for . In Shakespeare's "Hamlet" and Ellison's Invisible Man, the feminine character traits of the protagonists are alluded to as the cause of their failures, which supports the idea that the inward battle between masculinity and femininity exist as the characters journey closer to their identity. (2009) In short, Hamlet's mind never stops working. His dialogues are majorly infested with unraveled philosophies and understandings of the essence of human life: "the whips and scorns of time / Th' oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely / The pangs of disprized love, the law's delay / The insolence of office, and the spurns / That patient merit of th'unworthy takes." (Hoy 1992) However abundant, these reasoning do not dissolve into a solution, but rather, they project shadows upon Hamlet's determination to avenge by glazing his lenses with a pessimistic perception of life. As a result, Hamlet questions the necessity of killing Claudius and fails to settle the revenge accordingly to his father's will. The perfect foil character for the audience to collate against Hamlet's feminine mentality is Hamlet himself. His character is an amalgamation of contrasting personalities: good and bad, feminine and masculine. The prince's masculinity is discerned in the courage that lifts his steps when the ghost of Old Hamlet told him to go to a more isolated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. Letter From A Birmingham Jail Rhetorical Analysis While Martin Luther King Jr. was locked up in a jail he received a letter from eight clergymen. They reached out to King in a letter that is called "A Call for Unity." In this letter, they are telling king that people needed to stand up and try to make a change by peaceful protesting to get their point across ("A Call for Unity"). King then replies to their letter with a letter of his own which is known as "Letter from a Birmingham Jail." King states that he gets a lot of letters and doesn't reply to them but he thought that the clergymen meant good so he would try to answer their questions to the best of his ability (King). Also in the letter, he focuses on what is going on in Birmingham at the time and tells about himself and how he oversaw a lot of planning comities (King). In the "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" King uses three main ways to connect with the audience of the letter and those are ethos, pathos, and logos. Ethos can be a very effective way of reaching out to the people, because it is showing what kind of person that you are and in a way what is expected out of you. Ethos is sometimes most affective at the begging of the letter because it is laying out the background of the author. King states "I have the honor of serving as president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference..." (King). When King made this statement towards the beginning of his letter it was showing that he had power over people. Not only was he showing that he had power he was also showing that he was a Christian and worked with others to do something that they believed in. King then goes on to state "I cannot sit by idly by in Atlanta and not be concerned about what happens in Birmingham". Some people may not understand why I would label this ethos, I label it that way because he is showing that he cares about things that is a distance away from him and he does not just care about what is happening in the city that he is currently living in. By King saying that he is a Christian people would expect a lot out of him, because he a person that people look up to daily. King is also a person that people would go to for advice with him being a president. Pathos in my opinion could be one of the best ways to connect with your ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One event, conversation, or action may result in an illuminating moment changing the course of one's life. Oliver Wendell Holmes, a nineteenth century American poet, describes the lasting effects of this phenomena, "a moment's insight is sometimes worth a life's experience". The narrator, in Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man, experiences this life– altering moment when he is ensnarled in a race riot. They, as well as others (such as James Joyce), were trying something new, by breaking down the boundaries of traditional writing. Ford's Good Soldier and Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway are two particular examples of the genre. These novels were not well–received in their own time. As time went on, however, the attitudes of the literary world changed and were able to finally see these works for what they really are – exemplary pieces of fiction, certainly worth merit. The Good Soldier was first published in 1915. Rebecca West penned a promising review for the year, ending with "Indeed, this is a much, much better book than any of us deserve" (40). ... Edward Ashburnham is guilty of the very same things, yet he is still regarded as "good people." He also wonders at "the meaning of the narrator's nearly phobic concern with Catholicism, or of the way in which his slurs at Leonora are justified by her attachment to that persuasion"(46). If the implication is that John Dowell is crazy, Schorer is failing to see other psychological reasons why a man such as Dowell would think this way. It is evident that our narrator has not fully processed all of the events before he begins to tell of them. In addition, Dowell obviously wants to continue thinking highly of Ashburnham the "good soldier," and this completes John's psychological quandary. At the very least, Schorer recognizes the merit of The Good Soldier, and his essay appears to understand the deliberate complexities of the novel. Charles Hoffman likens The Good Soldier to an allegory, "the breakup of civilization itself, heading toward disaster" (53). Even while the quartet is falling apart, however, they still put on the proverbial brave face and, to all outward appearances, are just fine. This can be applied to the world at large. • 22. Essay Characterization in The Good Soldier In The Good Soldier, Ford Maddox Ford does not fully develop any of the characters. The reader is intended to use the narrator Dowell's disconnected and inaccurate impressions to build a more complete version of who the characters are, as well as form a more accurate view of what actually happens with "the sad affair" (Ford 9) of Dowell's pathetic life. This use of a single character's various perceptions creates a work that follows the style of literary impressionism, which, to some extent, should be only a series of personal impressions that culminates in the portrayal of reality as "a subjective experience" (van Gunsteren 239). This very subjectivity of reality is clearly evident in Dowell's perception of other people and events.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He also says that her heart had made him lead the life "of the sedulous, strained nurse" (13), constantly needing to watch her and protect her from anything that might possibly excite her or cause damage to her heart. While this apparently constrictive relationship could be construed as irritating, Dowell does not seem to have any objection to the role Florence has given him, even when he later realizes that she had faked her heart condition to manipulate him. For the most part, Florence even inspires some degree of pity in him, and she often becomes "poor dear Florence" (12) in his mind. That he is capable of pity for such a manipulative person is only explained by his oblivious nature. This particular version of Florence shows the full extent of his lack of understanding as he attempts to explain things to himself. It also shows the degree of his gullibility. Dowell also describes Florence as weak and simple–minded, saying that "she was bright and she danced" (17). This portrays Florence as an essentially superficial person. However, this superficiality does not really say anything directly about Florence, but illustrates what Thomas C. Moser phrases as "Dowell's conviction of the meaninglessness of existence" (Moser 354). IM is merely an entertainer or comedy act for the wealthy white men. In Twarie's article, he discusses an element of moral and emotional ambiguity to the novel, contributing to the mode of questioning that dominates it. Symbolic situations are illuminated in Ellison's novel such as the Battle Royal, and the boxing match which give rise to the stereotypes we see throughout the chapter (196). When the IM first arrived at the ballroom, he was under the impression that because he was there anyway, he might as well take part in the battle royal to be fought (Ellison 2). The Invisible Man suspected that fighting a battle royal might distract from the dignity of his speech. Tewarie tells us that the Battle Royal scene emphasizes the essentially feudal nature of southern society in the relationship between the black, and the white men. Tewarie emphasizes that "a black man cannot hope to be conceded his individuality nor his personhood" (193). As the chapter continues, we see how the white men at the smoker treat the IM, and interact with him. Before the battle royal begins I can see that the Ellison forecasts an air of humility and social responsibility– acknowledging social inequality. II. • 31. Analysis Of Social Inequality In Battle Royal By Ralph... Social inequality seems to be more common in places you will not expect. The story "Battle Royal" By Ralph Ellison explains that a young boy grows up to learn the harsh reality of being an invisible man. The author does this by putting the main character in the story, though situations that make him realize that he is diminished from society. The meaning of the story is supported by the setting of where different things take place throughout the story. Places such as the main ballroom played an important role. The ring of where the battle royal took place between the classmates can also be looked at to see how the narrator explains his point. Towards the end is when the main character presents his speech in a harsh environment that forces him to push his boundaries. These three settings throughout the story help the reader understand the meaning of the story that social inequality can make someone become an invisible man. According to the story "Battle Royal" by Ralph Ellison, the settings differ between different parts of the story. In the beginning when the passage states "It was in the main ballroom of the leading hotel... was told since I was to be there anyway, I might as well take part in the battle royal to be fought by some of my schoolmates as part of the entertainment" (Ellison 205). The main character finds himself having no choice but to do what he was told without a say about whether he would want to or not. This form of obedience of social class between the African American boy and white men happens throughout the story. Ralph Elision continues to explain that the form of entertainment was to watch the kids fight brutally in a bloodshed battle between African school boys. It all began when he was invited into the hotel ballroom that he would begin being told what to do or what to say or act. The way the room was set up, put a boxing ring in front of a row of chairs from all three sides. His father, Prescott Bush, a partner in a leading Wall Street law firm, was a Republican U.S. senator from Connecticut between 1952 and 1963. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1964 Bush ran for the U.S. Senate against Ralph Yarborough, the Democratic incumbent. Yarborough argued that Bush's views were too extreme, and, like most Republican candidates that year, Bush was defeated in the landslide that accompanied the victory of Texas Democrat Lyndon B. Johnson over U.S. Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona in the presidential election. Bush's strong showing in the firmly Democratic state, however, won the attention of a former Republican vice president and U.S. senator from California, Richard Nixon. In 1966, with assistance from Nixon, an affluent Houston district elected Bush to the U.S. House of Representatives, and reelected him in 1968. In the Congress of the United States Bush identified with Republican moderates who were practical and business–oriented, approaches to which his father had subscribed. He won a coveted seat on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee (which has jurisdiction over financial matters), supported the extension of voting rights to 18–year–olds, and voted to abolish the military draft. After two terms, he gave up his seat in the House to run again for the Senate, expecting to take on his old rival Ralph Yarborough. The Democrats, however, nominated a much more moderate candidate instead, former congressman Lloyd Bentsen, who defeated Bush in the fall. Despite his defeat, Bush was just the kind of ... • 33. What Is The Theme Of Law And Order In Lord Of The Flies William Goldings 'Lord of the Flies' represents the theme of Law and order throughout the novel. During the novel the group of the boys are stuck on an island and some turn into savages. Golding uses symbolism, characters and actions to represent law and order. The conch was the first thing to gather all the boys on the island, for a meeting. The boys then discussed how things should be done and they elect to vote for a chief. "Him with the shell." Ralph, the fair haired, good looking boy is voted as chief. But he isn't voted chief because of his age, leadership skills or any form of democracy. Ralph was voted in as chief because he was the one who blew the conch. The conch that would call the boys to sort out and discuss all the problems that they would have over the months that the boys would spend on the island. During these meetings, the conch didn't just call them, the conch allowed the holder to speak. To express their thoughts and ideas to all the other boys. But as soon as fear and bloodthirst took over their minds, the conch didn't mean anything to them and once this happened there was no way of getting them back. Soon Jack, Ralphs hunter, turned too and decided to start his own group. "Who'll join my tribe and have fun?" Boy by boy, more kids started to join Jacks tribe. Eventually the conch smashes and all breaks loose on the island. The conch represented law and order on the island and once the conch was destroyed, Ralph's rules went with it. Throughout the ... • 34. Lord Of The Flies Innocence Character Analysis March from Innocence The author Lyman Abbott once said, "Every life is a march from innocence, through temptations, to virtue or vice" (qtd. in Brainy Quote). This march, as Abbott puts it, is maturation. Inevitably, everyone must experience these phases, ending either in, the iconic, good or evil. The novel, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, examines these very steps. More specifically, Golding displays through the character Ralph; the phases of psychological maturity. Ralph throughout his experiences on the island will progress and digress in maturity. Ralph will begin as a carefree, innocent child–happy to be away from constraints of society. However, through certain events, Ralph will grow to become a leader and choose to stay morally good, while the boys around him digress in evil. More specifically, events that illustrate Ralphs, responsibility, assertiveness, honesty, detachment, and understanding lead to his complete maturation. Stranded on an island with no supervision, Ralph does what any child would do, " he stood on his head and grinned"(Golding 8). Ralph's immaturity is marked by this reaction of being without adult supervision. Like any child, he finds pleasure in doing what he wants and strips his clothes and plays around. Though Ralph displays childlike attributes now, he will experience steps that begin his maturation process. The first step Ralph experiences is responsibility. An example; when the boys' first crash on the island and everyone strays, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Good Morning Midnight By Jean Rhys Jean Rhys, the author of Good Morning Midnight, wrote about women with sense and sensitivity in mostly controversial ways. Rhys was born in Dominica in eighteen ninety–four. She came to England at the age of sixteen and hovered on many jobs before she moved to Paris, where she began writing and was found by Ford Maddox Ford. About the essay question and theme, of the representation of women in the city, I believe Rhys exposes the restrictive attitudes places upon women in the town rather than perpetuating them. Her novels, often showed women as underdogs out to exploit their sexualities, which shows they were ahead of their time. Once Good Morning Midnight was written she lived reclusively and was largely forgotten. In 'Good Morning Midnight' Sasha's story moves back and forth, her outlook shifting from her time in London to Paris. She remembers when she was married, to the time she was alone. Her life in Paris moves between a range of cafes and bars, places where she was known. And some she wants to stay away from, and areas ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, 'the woman at the bar gives me one of those looks: what do you want her, you? We don't cater for tourists here, not our clientele'. This sort of attitude is linked to stereotypes and prejudice. The barkeeps know nothing of Jensen personally by they automatically calculate the person she is from the way she appears. This could suggest that Rhys acknowledges that it is not just men who treat women unequally, but it is also women who degrade one another in the novel too. It also is a sudden example of female on female hostility. Sternlicht sees that 'women in her earlier novels are always hostile, and the protagonist is hostile in return or they repress anger or flee in tears'. (Sternlicht, 98). and throughout the novel in her sour encounters with other women, the reader see's Jansen's prosperity in all three ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Lord Of The Flies Character Analysis Lord of the Flies Speech Who is ultimately responsible for the destruction of the island in lord of the flies? "Shut up," said Ralph absently. He lifted the conch. "Seems to me we ought to have a chief to decide things." ... Good morning Mrs Downes and class, every civilisation needs a leader or a chief without one, it would deteriorate into utter chaos. William Golding shows early on that a natural born leader is amongst the mix of boys on the island whether he leads the boys to their rescue or demise only his actions and decisions will tell. Ralph is responsible for the island's decline because his poor leadership skills result in nothing getting done and the island breaking into splinter groups. From the beginning, Jack edges for power against Ralph. Unlike Ralph, Jack has some leadership skills. Ralphs claim to leadership is his good looks and that he was the one who first blew the conch. Yet Ralph is voted leader. At the beginning of the novel, Golding depicts Ralph as the natural leader. However his only claim to leadership is his good looks, and that he, first blew the conch. From the start of the novel Ralph is forced to take responsibility through the symbolic conch, being voted "chief", and possessing a natural propensity for leadership as he is confident, eloquent and attractive. Additionally, on page 31 Ralph progresses to the realisation that the boys need order. 'There aren't any grown–ups. We shall look after ourselves...We'll have to have 'hands up' like at ... • 37. Mrs. Dalloway Mental Illness Both settings in the The Good Soldier and Mrs. Dalloway take place in the early 1900's. This a time in which patriarchy and conservative ideals rule. The authors of the novels, Ford Madox Ford and Virginia Woolf, create characters that oppose such standards. They battle mental illness, extramarital temptation and economic disabilities, thus leading to an interesting development in the personalities, thoughts, and actions of such characters like, Edward Ashburnham, Florence Dowell, Clarissa Dalloway and Septimus. . Characters in both The Good Soldier and Mrs. Dalloway are deeply affected by mental illness at a time in which such ailments weren't recognized as a real health issue. The issue of unequal health care is specifically highlighted between the two novels, The Good Soldier and Mrs. Dalloway. In The Good Soldier, doctors recommend that the the very wealthy Edward Ashburnham and Florence Dowell visit luxurious spas to treat their fictitious heart problems. Edward uses such heart problems to escape from the military while Florence's uses hers to distance herself John. These two characters selfishly abuse the opportunities provided to them whereas Septimus and LuCrezia desperately search for any sort of mental illness treatment in Mrs. Dalloway. Unlike Edward and Florence, the couple is left very few options to treat Septimus's shell shock. They ultimately find help in Dr. Holmes and Sir William Bradshaw. While it unclear whether or not Sir William Bradshaw could have effectively treated Septimus or not, the reader has evidence to how harmful Dr. Holmes is, as seen when he practically scared Septimus into killing himself. This all may have been avoided if Septimus and LuCrezia had the same access to outstanding medical treatment as Edward and Florence did. All in all, Characters in The Good Soldier take advantage of exceptional medical services for imaginary ailments while sickly and underprivileged people like Septimus are left to their own devices . • 38. Invisible Man Character Analysis If you skipped from the end of the prologue of Invisible Man, by Ralph Ellison, all the way until the protagonist's eviction speech, you would probably pick up the plot and character developments without a problem. The first few ordeals described in the novel can be infuriating because of the narrator's naГЇve outlook and his persistence in trying to follow a 'respectable' path upwards in life. All of the psychological shifts that lead up to the captivating scenario from the first few pages happen after the entrance of Brother Jack, and suspenseful segments appear more often – and arguably more effectively – in the second half of the book. Despite this, the first half is just as important, due to Ellison's detailed characterization of the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Surrounding the narrator's appearance at this "smoker" are flickers of the sentiments he's had to discard. His least favorite memory is hearing his grandfather's last words: "Son, after I'm gone I want you to keep up the good fight... I want you to overcome 'em with yeses, undermine 'em with grins, agree 'em to death and destruction, let 'em swoller you till they vomit or bust wide open" (16). One would expect the narrator to hold on to this dream, that if black communities prove themselves to be good Christians, Americans, and everything else, they will eventually prevail over their oppressors. After all, he "visualized [him]self as a potential Booker T. Washington" (18). in those days. But because it directly states that white society is the enemy, none of the people close to the protagonist's grandfather can accept it, and it only causes them fear. • 39. Is Ralph A Good Leader Essay What makes up a leader? In the book Lord of the Flies, whose author is William Golding, this question wasn't well thought through before a leader was chosen. Though the main characters are only little kids, they had a challenging choice they had to make; they had not the slightest idea that the choice that they would make might amount to some of them losing their lives. In the Lord of the Flies, a group of boys from an all–boys school, crash–landed on an inhabited island. Upon arriving on the island, they had to choose who would be chief. Mostly everybody chose the same kid as a chief. Though, only a handful of boys, the choir boys were loyal to their choir leader, Jack, voted him as chief. Yet the result was the same, Ralph was chief. The reason behind why the kids nominated Ralph chief was because he looked more appealing than jack and he seemed to know what to do. Like for instance, the kids were bewildered when they saw that Ralph had the conch in his hands and that he was not the "man with a trumpet." Then they realized that Ralph was "the man with the trumpet" and perceived that he would make a fine leader. I say overall: his honesty, his ability to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is true, even though the kids were not told that ralph was supposed to symbolize leadership, order, and responsibility, they saw somehow that he was made up of those things. This idea is supported in the novel where it says, "They obeyed the summons of the conch, partly because Ralph blew it, and he was big enough to be a link with the adult world of authority," (Golding 59). • 40. Interpretation In Ford Madox Ford's The Good Soldier Within the novel The Good Soldier, by Ford Madox Ford, narration serves as an imperative framing mechanism for propelling the plot of the story, while also generating the fragmentation necessary for maintaining the unclarity that pervades John's story. By both subtly positioning the narrator John Dowell as an outsider relative to the other characters, and consequently emphasizing the notion of being outside, Ford facilitates a pointillistic representation of the infidelities that characterize his story. Not only does Ford distance Dowell from the other characters in his narrative, but he also prompts the reader to reject John as an omnipotent, reliable source, thereby provoking the former to rely on interpretation as the primary means for finding resolution. Emphasizing several factors that distinguish John from the other characters, such as his nationality, his inclusion in and knowledge of the infidelitous relationships, his personality type, his future reflective standpoint, and his tendency to infuse his current attitudes and nostalgia into his retelling of this story, Ford employs narration as the essential mechanism for framing the story. Initially denoting both his position as an outsider, and his efforts to justify the abhorrent, adulterous, behavior of Edward Ashburnham and Florence, Dowell frames himself as an American who is merely observing British culture. While establishing himself within his story, Dowell claims that the adulterous affair "is, I believe, a state of things only possible with English people of whom, till today, when I sit down to puzzle out what I know of this sad affair, I knew nothing whatever," proceeding to concede that "Six months ago [he] had never been to England" (Ford, 13). That Ford notes this distinction on the first page of the narrative forces the reader to immediately consider John as a relative outsider in the story, a notion that is compounded by the latter's constantly identifying cultural differences between himself and the Ashburnhams. By conceding that he had not even traveled to England prior to his experience with the Ashburnhams, Dowell implicitly frames their cultural differences as responsible for Edward Ashburnham's infidelitous tendencies and Leonora's ... • 41. Regulatory Oversight And Recall Of President Lyndon B.... Regulatory Oversight and Recall Congress began to hold high–profile hearings on automobile safety in 1965. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed both the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act and the Highway Safety Act into law. The two bills gave the federal government authority to set and enforce safety standards for vehicles and roads. The NTMVSA was the first legislation mandating federal safety standards for motor vehicles. Although the safety standards in the NTMVSA were watered down in response to industry lobbyists, it required important safety features that the current generation of car drivers would never expect to be absent from a vehicle: "seat belts for every passenger, impact–absorbing steering wheels, rupture–resistant fuel tanks, door latches that stayed latched in crashes, side–view mirrors, shatter–resistant windshields, windshield defrosters, lights on the sides of cars as well as the front and back, and 'the padding and softening of interior surfaces and protrusions.'" (History.com) Also in 1966, two new government agencies–the National Traffic Safety Agency and the National Highway Safety Agency–were created to carry out the safety programs authorized under the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act and the Highway Safety Act.
