Analysis of Album Release Posters
- 1. Analysis of album release posters By Pegah Nourmand
- 2. Why are album release posters important? • The album releposter is a form of advertisement for the music released by the artist. The album poster is released to the public, such as on the underground, and is used as an attempt to attract new audiences. The artwork that is released is used to represent the artist and the music genre they represent. Essentially, posters are created to attract the consumer and make them interested in the album and artist without the individual listening to the music.
- 3. Stormzy – Gang Signs & Prayer Stormzy's album release poster was seen everywhere on London's busy underground and viewed by millions taking public transport every week. Therefore, he was able to achieve a large audience on his release date, many of which were unfamiliar of his previous music. Stormzy is positioned in the middle of the frame, stating his authority and making it fairly obvious that he is the artist of the album. Another factor that makes this clear is that every other individual is in ski masks whereas, he isn't. The ski masks which are being worn are a play on the view of a certain group in society of young adults in London. This links with the title "Gang signs and Prayer" as the ski masks connect with gang culture. The album was advertised to be released on the 24th February 2017. Pictures of the album poster with the release date was difficult to find which is why I have included an example of the advertisement. Similarities have been drawn between this album cover and Da Vinci's religious painting. Since Stormzy has been very explicit on his Christian beliefs through his lyrics "we were doing road and doing church", it could be seen as a humble gesture and tribute. The picture also links to the album title "Gang signs and Prayer"
- 4. Kanye West - Yeezus Kanye West's album release poster is very simplistic, contrasting the mainstream release poster's that are shown to the public. The font is as if it was written with a marker pen, possibly a representation of how much pride Kanye West takes in his work as he has written out his own album poster. The simplicity of the CD and a note saying "Yeezus" shows the audience that he understands he is a successful artist who doesn't necessarily need an eye-catching and flashy release poster to be recognised. The demanding text of "NO PRE ORDER. PLEASE PURCHASE JUNE 18" shows Kanye West's demanding advertisement in order to attract his audience. Kanye West is being adamant on what he wants from his audience by stating they shouldn’t pre order and should purchase on the release day.
