According to Maclver “ Community is an aggregation of families and individuals,
settled in a fairly compact and contiguous geographical area, with significant
elements of common life, as shown by manners, customs, tradition and modes of
speech.”

• Density of population less than 300/sq km,
• Population size less than 5000
• More than 75% people depend on agriculture
• Agriculture would be the major occupation in rural
area.
• A minimum population of 5000
• At least 75% of the population is non-agriculture
• A density of population of at least 400 persons per
sq.km
6. • A tribe is a collection of families bearing a common name,
speaking a common dialect, occupying or professing to
occupy a common territory and is not usually endogamous
though originally it might have been so.
• All rural features plus geographical location is hill
• According to the census 2011 the total tribal population in
India is 8.6%
• Sarchhip district Mizoram states have high number of
tribal population in India (98.1%)

7. • Coastal communities are people living on the thin strip of land or
on the water along the fluctuating line where the sea meets the
land.
• The nine coastal states of India have a population of 420 million. Of
this, about 330 million live on or within 150 km of a coast. The
management of this intensely populated region is an extremely
difficult issue.
