2. Introduction
• About 70 per cent Indians live in rural areas: 2011 Census report
• Of the 121 crore Indians, 83.3 crore live in rural areas while 37.7 crore
stay in urban areas
• The level of urbanisation increased from 27.81 per cent in the 2001
Census to 31.16 per cent in the 2011 Census, while the proportion of
rural population declined from 72.19 per cent to 68.84 per cent.
3. • The statistics reveal that while the maximum number of people living in
rural areas in a particular state is 15.5 crore in Uttar Pradesh, Mumbai tops
the list having the maximum number of people in urban areas at five crore.
• The data also reflects that 18.62 per cent of the country’s rural population
lives in Uttar Pradesh and 13.48 per cent urban population lives in
Maharashtra.
4. Meaning of Rural Area
• Rural areas are also known as 'countryside' or a 'village' in India. It
has a very low density of population.
• In rural areas, agriculture is the chief source of livelihood along with
fishing, cottage industries, pottery etc.
5. Definition of Rural Area
• The "rural area" means any place as per the "latest census " which
meets the following criteria,
• A population of less than 5,000
• Density of population less than 400 per sq km and
• more than "25 per cent of the male working population" is engaged in
agricultural pursuits.
6. Features of Rural Community
Village is an institution : The Village is a primary institution. The development of
villages is influenced considerably by the life of the village. It satisfies almost all
the needs of the rural.
Community: They have a sense of unity and a feeling of belongingness towards
each other.
Religion: Faith in religion and universal power is found in the life of the villages.
Agriculture: Main occupation is agriculture which involves dependence on nature.
Nature gives the livelihood to them. Farmers worship forces of nature.
7. Rural Development
• Our economy is developing fast, Industries and big corporates are
going globalised, with liberalization, tremendous changes are being
felt in IT, manufacturing, Service sector, but nobody thinks of the
rural development to make it as fast as in these sectors.
