This document discusses ammonia fuel cell systems and the potential for ammonia to enable a hydrogen economy. It provides an overview of different fuel cell types and their operating temperatures. Ammonia is proposed as an alternative fuel to hydrogen that could take advantage of existing infrastructure for storage and transport. High-temperature fuel cells like solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) are well-suited for utilizing ammonia without the need for external reforming. PCFCs in particular are highlighted for their ability to enable direct ammonia fuel cells and fuel cells, electrolyzers, and synthesis reactors with benefits like nitrogen-free hydrogen products.
