This document provides an overview of three societies - Native Americans, Africans, and Europeans - that came into contact in the Americas in the 15th-16th centuries. It describes the social structures, beliefs, and technologies of each group. Native Americans lived in diverse societies across North America, with extended families, animism, trade, and kinship-based social organization. West Africans also had complex societies based on family, elders' councils, animism, and collective land ownership. Europeans were exploring globally starting in the 15th century, driven by goals of trade, wealth, and religious conversion. Their society was stratified and influenced by the Renaissance, printing press, and growing commerce and nationalism.
