Fire Interpreting Evidence
Haely Pratt J. Tristan PHIL 1106 002 Trial by Fire: Interpreting Evidence In late 1992, Cameron
Todd Willingham was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death for a fire that claimed the lives
of his three daughters the previous December. During the trial, the prosecution cited evidence from
two arson investigators, Douglass Fogg and Manuel Vasquez, listing more than twenty indicators of
arson, along with testimony from medical experts and other witnesses. The trial lasted only two
days and resulted in a unanimous guilty verdict. However, now following Willingham s execution,
it has come to light that much of the evidence used in his conviction in no way guarantees that
arson had occurred. If this is true, the state may have put an... Show more content on

by human hands. They also cited the path of the fire the burn trailer being abnormal as it turned
sharply toward the front door. Finally, a sample taken from the home revealed the presence of
mineral spirits, a substance that is often found in charcoal lighter fluid, near the front door. They
concluded that the evidence simply didn t match up with Willingham s version of events. The
remaining evidence came from witness testimony, such as an inmate in the same jail who alleged
that Willingham had confessed to him, neighbors, firefighters, and police that were at the scene,
and testimony from medical experts. Tim Gregory, a psychologist, and James Grigson, a forensic
psychiatrist, testified that art possessed by Willingham (and his tattoos) suggested an association...

Essay about Prison Reform In America
Prison quot;Reform quot; in America
In the essay quot;Prison quot;Reform quot; in America, quot; Roger T. Pray points out the much
attention that has been devoted to research to help prevent crimes. Showing criminals the errors of
their ways not by brutal punishment, but by locking them up in the attempt to reform them. Robert
Pray, who is a prison psychologist, is currently a researcher with the Utah Dept. of Corrections. He
has seen what has become of our prison system and easily shows us that there is really no such thing

They felt that the brutal criminal punishment was irreconcilable with their Christian beliefs. So in
1786, they persuaded the Pennsylvania legislature to limit the death penalty to murder, treason,
rape and arson. It was then that all other criminals would have to be imprisoned for up to ten
years. As the population grew and more people where getting sent to prison instead of being
executed the prison began to get crowded.
The Walnut Street prison, which was the first prison, built in 1790 was a prototype for other
prisons to be built over the next 30 years. By the year 1817 the prison began to deteriorate.
Changes and overcrowding of prisoners in one room pushed Pennsylvania legislature to build
more prisons. In 1817 two more prisons where built, one in eastern and one in western
Pennsylvania. They built these prisons with separate cell areas, so each inmate could be kept
alone, eliminating all the problems of congregate living. The idea of having separate cells did not
originate in America. quot;Of course the notion of forcibly confining people is ancient and there is
extensive evidence that the Romans had a well developed system for imprisoning different types of
offenders. quot; (Meskelly).
It was the Auburn jail that added a new system to imprisonment. It was solitary confinement. At the
time many criminals had mental breakdowns being locked up in one room by themselves for
years. It was then that a thirty five year rivalry between Pennsylvania and New York

Nazi Propaganda In Nazi Germany
Nazi Propaganda
Propaganda tries to force a doctrine on the whole people... Propaganda works on the general
public from the standpoint of an idea and makes them ripe for the victory of this idea, (United
States Holocaust Memorial Museum 1) written by Adolf Hitler in his book Mein Kampf published
in 1925. Propaganda is defined as the spreading of ideas, information or rumors for the purpose of
helping or hurting an institution (Propaganda in Nazi Germany 1). After the Nazi seizure of power
in 1933, they used this method of persuasion to spread the ideas of National Socialism, racism,
anti Semitism, and to explain who was excluded from Hitler s perfect community. Hitler saw
propaganda as the art of persuasion, taking it to new levels ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Hitler believed the Aryan people and those of true German decent were predestined to rule the
world. All other races were seen as a threat to the end product of his master plan(The Holocaust
Explained). This led to deportation, being forced to live in ghettos, and eventually the killing of
races seen as degenerates to the Nazi party. Propaganda was used to create stereotypes and bad
images of Jews and other unworthy races, while creating a fear, distrust and eventually a hatred of
these supposed enemies. Anti Semitic and other racist propaganda was used to justify the status of
pariah being given to Jews and others deemed as undesirables (The Chief). This form of
manipulation also helped to portray Germany as the defender of the west after the German invasion
of the Soviet Union. The propaganda painted a catastrophic image of what would have happened if
the Soviets would have won, hoping with this, German citizens would better support the Nazis in
the war efforts (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

Social Darwinism In The Challenge Of Facts By Maudsley
Advocated for by English philospher, sociologist, and prominent classical liberal political theorist,
Herbert Spencer, Social Darwinism is essentially the theory that individuals and groups of people
are subject to the same Darwinian laws of natural selection as plants and animals, that their struggle
for existence is ultimately a competition that results in a survival of the fittest scenario. American
sociologist, economist, William Sumner along with renowned British psychiatrist, Dr. Henry
Maudsley, were both prolific proponents of Social Darwinismand argued that their evidence in
support of Social Darwinism were scientific and that Social Darwinism as a theory itself, was
science. In his essay The Challenge of Facts, Sumner argues that... Show more content on

In this article he argues that providing higher education to adolescent girls would not only
produce permanent injury to their reproductive organs, but to their brains as well. He insists that a
great amount of stress and change affects the psychological functions of girls going through
puberty and that because of their delicate constitution during this time, they would be subjected to
exhaustive mental strain by pursuing the same courses of study and being subjected to the same
examinations as their more verile and strong minded male counterparts, for there is sex in mind
as distinctly and there is sex in body...and regard must be had to the mental qualities which
correlate difference of sex. (79) Maudsley claims that even when these functions are in good
working order and the woman as arrived at maturity, the facts of her organization interfere
periodically to such an extent with steady and serious labour of mind or body that she can never
hope to compete successfully with men. Instead, Maudsley suggests that women stick with what
they and their mental capacities were built for, i.e. to be companions and helpmates to men, and
conceivers, mothers, and nurses to children, arguing that men are not so fitted mentally as women
to be the educators and caregivers of children during the early years of infancy and childhood. (81)
However, because women are provided with certain qualities specifically catered to fostering the
growth of children, it only makes sense for her to focus what little energy she has to doing just that
and leave the more psychologically intense work to the men. Further, Maudsley continues to paint a
dire picture of the inevitable results of women s over expenditure of her vital energy. While the
stimuli of competition in men is healthy and brings out the best in them, for women it would cause
the calamitous denigration

The Hebrew Diaspora
The Jews faced a long history of persecution and racism. Envy, greed, and thirst for power caused
groups such as the Assyrians, Babylonians, and Romans (to name a few) to persecute, exile, and
threaten the existence of the Hebrew community. The Diaspora was definitely not a single event
taking place over the course of one night, it was rather a series of dispersals by varying groups of
people continuing up to the present time. The Diaspora resulted in the spread of the Hebrew
population along with their culture and beliefs, which ultimately strengthened the Hebrew
community. The Hebrew Diaspora was a forced movement of Hebrews as a direct result of racial
prejudice and anti Semitic movements, ultimately resulting in the spread of the... Show more

This occurred to concentrate the various skills of the Jewish in separate arenas and to use these
individually skilled communities for the benefit of the Babylonians. For example, as previously
mentioned the most skilled and elite Jews were dispersed to Babylon the heart of the Babylonian
empire. Thus, the better trained and more adept a Jew was, the more opportunity the Jew had to
serve for empire in higher ranks solely to meet the needs of the empire and its rulers. This helped
the empires exiling the Jews to prosper, but unfortunately created rifts and gaps within the Hebrew
community. This pattern of dispersion, which was developed by the Babylonians and used by the
Romans to scatter the Jews, allowed for these dominant empires to prosper, however, limited the
interaction within the Hebrew community and resulted in the diminishing originality and novelty
of the skilled Jews. Despite the use of the uniform dispersion pattern based on the occupations of
the Jews, the reason why Jews were exiled and dispersed varied depending on the imposing empire
of the time, which performed these actions. The Hebrew Diaspora was caused by different factors
depending on the group exiling the Hebrews. In other words, the reason for dispersing the Hebrews
depended on the context of time, circumstance, and those carrying out the exile. The Assyrians and
Babylonians dispersed the Hebrew community in the early sixth century

Installing The Four Integrated Spaces
I started my design process by sketching the overall form of the four integrated spaces. I intended
the place to be a relaxation centre for the community in an area. The place has to be larger than
private residential space as it is intended for the public.
For the first concept, I intended the space to be of different heights, to show that some spaces need
more privacy than the other. The cellar has to has more privacy than the belvedere and hearth and
bathe space is in between,
The belvedere has to have big openings (windows) so that the occupant of the space can see the
best view of the surrounding. The hearth has to have a fireplace and a chimney, with seating. The
bathe space has to have a medium sized pool and some privacy as an ... Show more content on

I started to draw the plan of the spaces on the ground floor. I also experimented with the
appropriate scale of the spaces. The elements of the spaces was decided at this point of the design
process. I also emphasise on the accessibility to all the spaces, to create continuity and connections.
The next step ws to integrate the cellar design (overall form), to match the ground level plan and to
create the best pathway to access all the four spaces, to create an amazing architectural experience.
Sketch of the final form designed after all the spaces was integrated.
Final model, overall form.
I intended the cellar to be a dark place, with low amount of light entering the space. However, still
creates an interesting experience throughout the whole space.
I experimented with arrangement of cards vertically cards with certain intervals to direct the whole
journey. It also creates continuity in the space. The cards have different arrangent of whole that is
going to give some sense of direction for the whole journey . It is meant to be slightly

Hope Is The Thing With Feathers By Emily Dickinson
Analyzing Birds and Hopes in Hope is the thing with feathers Is hope a thing with feathers?
Hard to believe it, right? Hope is the thing with feathers is one of the best well known poems of
Emily Dickinson. An inspiring story, connecting the significance of hope with a bird that it s
permanently perching the soul of every human. The author of this poem, Emily Dickinson, wrote
this extended metaphor in 1862. Only seven poems from 1800 poems that she wrote got
published when she was alive. This poem has a very good use of the language, different types of
rhythm, and stands out the word Hope which reminds all of us that no matter how are the
circumstances if you are singing and have hopes you can change the consequences. I will analyze
the use of symbolism and language that Emily Dickinson uses in Hope is the thing with feathers to
convey the setting and the theme of the poem. Establishing the poem s theme, the speaker begins:
Hope is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul And sings the tune without the words And
never stops at all . (Dickinson lines 1 4)... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What Dickinson is doing in these two first lines are giving emphasis with the use of a bird to
symbolize freedom and to make you realize that hope is always there, in your heart. In the last
two lines of the first stanza, the speaker focuses in what the bird does: sings the tunes without the
words (Dickinson line 3), meaning that hope is endless, and it will remain on you forever. The
bird singing in the soul it s a perfect example of Dickinson s homiletic style. Her language through
the first stanza is vivid and gentle, and it captions the attention of the reader using metaphors (lines
1 3), personifications (line 2 and 3), slant rhymes and

The Home By Edgar Guest Essay

the men who live their creeds, For to see a good put in action is what everybody needs. I can

people coming up that path, we knew they were coming to our house, because it was the only one
up there. But, what I remember most about that was all that took place from the time we saw our
company coming up that path until they reached our front porch. Why, you never saw so much
straightening up, sprucing up and putting up. And, then there was that smile, which was always
reserved for company. I used to wonder about that then and I still wonder about it so far as most

Proton- Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) Essay
A H2/O2 protonв€’exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is a clean, sustainable energy source
and suitable for the operation of small electronic device [1]. Among many problems that still exist
for PEMFC, the sluggish reactions at the cathode electrode and poor mass transport of protons and
electron decrease the fuel cell performance by increasing the activation overvoltage, or activation
loss [2]. This problem can, however, be solved by raising the fuel cell operating temperature [3],
but only up to a certain temperature before the deformation or degradatation of polymeric
components occurs. Thus, the reduction in the activation overvoltage for low temperature fuel cell
operation is still necessary when the PEMFC components are made of... Show more content on

Epichlorohydrin is suitable to be used as a crosslinking agent for crosslinking chitosan as it only
reacts with the hydroxyl groups of chitosan, leaving the primary amine groups free to bind with
protons or water molecules (both of which contribute to the proton mitigation). However, many
questions have not been answered in the previous report [7]. The current study thus focuses on
the effects of the operating temperature and relative humidity (RH) on performances of H2/O2

6.Damages. The amputated leg cannot be replaced; therefore the patient is entitled to compensatory
damages regarding pain and suffering, permanent disability, disfigurement, emotional damages as
well as financial loss and medical expenses. In this scenario, all six elements to prove malpractice
are present. The negligence is by licensed personnel in a hospital setting. Using the definitions and
criteria above, the newspaper incorrectly defines the mishap as negligence. The correct term to use
in this case is professional negligence or malpractice. Nursing documentation should be reflective of
the patient s hospital stay. This includes identifying and addressing patient needs, assessments,
problems, limitations, and responses to nursing interventions. According to Guido (2010),
Documentation must show continuity of care, interventions that were implemented, and patient
responses to the therapies implemented. Nurses notes are to be concise, clear, timely, and
complete (p. 197). Guido (2010) lists the following guidelines for nurses to use to ensure
documentation is complete and accurate (p. 197 209): 1.Make an entry for every observation. If
documentation is absent, it can be assumed an observation did not take place. 2.Follow up as
needed. Evaluation and observations require follow up to ensure appropriate patient responses and
optimal outcomes. 3.Read nurses notes prior to giving

At first she forgets to bring the right shoes to work, and then she decides to explain it with

that the narrator s sense of order is not the best. She also tells us, that she has dry washed her hair,

looking for order? It could be that she almost all the time, searches amongst others for the one thing

It seems that she is in a drastic development. She is married, but yet she wants to be divorced, and
when she goes home after work it s without her husband. The relationship between her and her

Social Interaction In Human Society
Social interaction is what make up our human society. Through interaction, we socialize with our
family, friends, people in the community to strengthen our relationship with each other. Through
socialization, human society is established and become the foundation for everything inside the
society. Our society is more complex than any society found in nature, but it s not perfect nor
ideal for every member inside the society. Thus, the thought of an ideal society as well as how to
achieve that society is very fascinating among sociologists, whose role is to solve social problems
and develop this theory. Human society is composed of multiple factors: individuals who work
together in the same environment and contribute to the society; cultures which were passed down
by previous generations and become the foundation for the future in spirituals, values, beliefs and
norms; materials that people consume or use to develop society and improve their live (agriculture,
infrastructure...); social organizations and institutions which regulate the behavior of people like
laws, religions, government, religions...to help guide them down the path accepted by the majority.
All these components work together to maintain order, and thrive human society forward,
eventually lead to an ideal society where every individual can have their need fulfills, and most of
the social problems solved. As human society advance forward, so will the structure of the society.
There have been many type of societies

The Responsibility Of 911 Attacks
Have you ever think of the US should take the responsibility of 911 attacks? September 11
attacks, the deadliest terrorist attack in world history, were a series of airline hijacking by
nineteen militants of an Islamic extremist group Al Qaeda. The hijackers, along with the suicide
bombers, seized four US commercial jets and crashed them into US s landmarks, Twins tower of
World Trader Center and the Pentagon, at 8:46 a.m. on September 11, 2011. The notorious Al Qaeda
chief Osama bin Laden masterminded the attacks. According to CNN News, the September 11
attackskilled 2,966 people and injured more than 6,000 citizens in New York City (CNN).
Moreover, as reported by Health Department WTC s Health Registry, the attacks brought on the
post traumatic stress disorder, and they concluded that 1,140 people who worked near the
Manhattan and the New York City at the time are diagnosed with cancer caused by exposure to
toxins at Ground Zero (Bendix). On September 11, President George W Bush addressed a
plausible but flawed explanation, America was targeted for attack because we re the brightest
beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world. And no one will keep that light from shining
(The Boston Globe), which indirectly reveals that Bush is blaming Muslims for the fault for 911
attacks. While most of the Americans believe that Muslims are fully responsible for the 911

Research Paper Dermatologist
Dermatologist take care of people with problems relating to skin. They can prescribe medicine,
perform surgery, and write treatment plans for a patient. Most dermatologist work in a group
clinic. Working in a group clinic is very helpful because they share many of the same patients. It
is a lot easier to communicate information about a patient when most of the doctors work in the
same place. People aspiring to be a dermatologist need to be able to work long hours, be able to
handle stress, emotionally stable, patient, and have problem solving skills.
A bachelor s degree is the minimum degree a person can have to become a dermatologist. Math,
English, physics, biology, and inorganic and organic chemistry will most likely be required with a
bachelor s degree. Most people have more advanced degrees, but they are not needed. There are
more opportunities with an advanced degree. To be a dermatology physician assistant, you need a
master s degree. A master s degree usually takes around four years to complete. To be a
dermatology medical doctor, you need to complete medical school, one year internship, three years
on the job training, and state licensing exam and certification from the American Board of

Mega Events Like The Olympics And Fifa World Cup
Mega Events like the Olympics and FIFA world Cup are both tremendously important and popular
today. It is because there are so few, if any, other events that truly inspire international cooperation
and unity like they do. If one can imagine these events as a mirrors reflecting back the
organization of international politics, the mega events show a picture of incredible harmony and
cooperation (Segrave, 1988). Inherent in that picture of harmony is the opportunity to spread
important ideals such as equality, freedom, and democracy throughout the world. In addition
global mega events like the world cup and the Olympics have become incredibly effective tools
for reorganizing an economy on neoliberal grounds. The Olympics in particular has emerged as
the premier event in the international community. However, for all its acclaim, the presentation of
the games is drastically different from the games of old. Throughout the evolution the intentions
of the games has been skewed. As a result, the modern games, as we know them portray an
interesting question politically and economically. In this chapter I will discuss the evolution of the
Games conceptually, in order to pose the ultimate question; Why host the Olympics? The First
Games The first Games of 776 B.C. in Olympia, Greece were a time to celebrate sport and honor
their religious deity. In many regards it was considered a cultural festival by which Greek regions

The Family Systems Theory During The Mid 20th Century
Murray Bowen, an American psychiatrist, began developing what would become known as the
family systems theory during the mid 20th century. He believed that the family was an emotional
unit and that it could be best understood by looking not just at current family interactions but the
interactions of prior generations as well (Helm, 2009). His focus was on using theory, not therapy,
to treat the patient and the cornerstone of that theory is that human behavior is based on a person
being able to maintain intimacy with loved ones while differentiating themselves sufficiently as
individuals so as not to be swept up by what is transpiring within the family(p. 205).
At both the Menninger Clinic and the National Institute of Mental Health, Bowen became
interested in schizophrenia specifically in relation to the mother and child. He soon realized that he
needed to focus on the entire family rather than just mother and child to provide a more accurate
picture for his research. The Bowen Family Systems theory was born of this realization. The basic
premise of the family systems theory is that the therapist cannot fully understand or successfully
treat the client without first grasping how that individual functions within their family system.
To this end, Bowen postulated eight interlocking concepts for the family as an emotional unit and
they are differentiation of self, triangles, nuclear family emotional process, family projection
process, emotional cutoff, multigenerational

Similarities Between Ww1 And Russia
There are parallels between what was happening in Ireland and Russia during World War I that
spurred revolution in both of them. Both countries were generally unhappy with their government
and their involvement in the war. The war amplified the problems, like poverty in Russia and
England limiting Ireland s government, that already existed in both of those countries. Without the
negative impacts of World War Ion countries like Russiaand Ireland, there would have been less of
a call for revolution.
The social and political climate in Russia changed greatly during WWI. The main reason was

One of the major similarities between the two countries situation was that Germany had
involvement in both of their revolutions. As previously mentioned, Germany sent aid for Ireland s
revolution, but they also sent revolutionary Vladimir Lenin back to Russia after he was exiled.
Lenin eventually led the October Revolution in 1917 and became a highly involved leader in the
new Russian Bolshevik government. Both Russia and Ireland were displeased with their
governments and a large reason these revolutions happened was to change this. In addition, both
countries suffered because of their ruling government s involvement in the war. Irish soldiers were
treated poorly and there was animosity between English and Irish soldiers. Meanwhile. The
Russian army had a similar animosity, but there s was with their leader. Involvement in World War
I negatively impacted the social and political climates in Russia and Ireland. While revolution in

Control Of Employee Turnover At Tft Corporation
Proposal For Control of Employee Turnover at TFT Corporation Submitted To Department of
Human Resource Management TFT Corporation 1600 Park Road Dallas By Erin Turner Best
Human Resource Practices Consulting Limited (BHRPCL) 1300 Second Street Vice City,
California August 09, 2016 INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY This project proposes practical
ways to minimize the diversifying rate of employee turnover at TFT Corporation with no exertion
of extreme pressure on the existing resources (material, human, and monetary). Employees can
leave one firm for another in the quest for better payments, better working environment, better
organizational culture, and freedom from managerial pressure. The HRM sector is obligatory for
most of the duties... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
TFT Corporation loses an average of thirty employees every year since 2013 and hence enacts a
recruitment strategy at the start of every successive year to compensate the created vacancies.
Besides to that, the company has noted a declining trend in the profit trend since the existing
consumers are losing their confidence in the productivity of the corporation. Retention of
specialized employees in a firm upholds the consumers trust in a company s potential to meet
the underlying customer needs optimally. This trend accounts for the corporation s statistics
whereby it had noted a decrease in aggregate sales from $46 billion in 2014 to $40 billion in
December 2015. The high employee turnover rate in TFT Corporation is adversely affecting the
company s economic growth and competitiveness. PROJECT GOAL I propose to present
practical strategies targeted at reducing the final rate of employee turnover at TFT Corporation to
a reasonably productive rate like one or two employees per year. I recommend the establishment
of winning strategies for employee motivation, setting of promotion strategies based on employee
performance, and training of employees. PLAN OF PROPOSED WORK The project will cover
seven main strategies whereby the following will be enacted. The plans entail effective employee
motivation; promotion based on employee job performance; Training of employees;

Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED)
This paper explores Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED), a disorder categorized by the
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fifth Edition (DSM 5) as an impulse
control disorder. To understand this disorder research was collected on predisposing factors that
make an individual more vulnerable to IED. Research was also collected on precipitating and
perpetuating factors to explore what factors trigger the disorder and subsequently prolong the
symptoms. Finally, research was collected on how the disorder is diagnosed and current treatment
options for individuals diagnosed with IED.

The optimal goal of treatment for patients with IED is remission, which is the resolution of
symptoms or improvement to the point where only one or two symptoms of mild intensity persist.
If that goal is unattainable a practical goal is stabilizing the safety of the patient and others as well
as substantially improving the number, intensity, and frequency of symptoms. To achieve these
treatment goals studies have shown the best treatment is a combination of medication and
psychotherapy (Alpert Spillmann, 1997). The use of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor
(SSRI) Fluoxetine has shown moderate to large improvement in the reduction of impulsive
aggressive behavior. The goal of the Fluoxetine is to balance out the altered serotonin levels that
are commonly altered in individuals with IED (Coccaro, M.D., 2012). In addition to medication
cognitive behavioral therapy has been shown to reduce impulsive aggression, anger, and hostile
automatic thoughts. The therapies used include relaxation training, cognitive restructuring, and
coping skills training. The rates of full remission from IED were 29% with fluoxetine alone and
33% from cognitive behavioral therapy alone. When combined the treatments are more effective
for sustained remission because they work through different mechanisms (Coccaro, M.D., 2012).
Studies have shown that IED symptoms precede the onset of other comorbid disorders and are
persistent and follow a chronic course of at least 12 years. Intervention at an early age is most
effective before development of comorbid disorders (Coccaro, M.D.,

Memory Monologue
The slow steady thrum of a machine sounds from somewhere behind you. You don t recognize it.
Where s it from? When did it even start humming? You don t know, nor do you remember it being
there a few minutes ago, or was it an hour? Your brain is fuzzy, leaving spots of your memories
foggy or gone completely, having disappeared in the time it took you to think of your next thought.
This was confusing. It made your head hurt, a hammering ache behind your eyes that seemed to
pulsate in time with your heartbeat. Your heartbeat? Why do you know the rhythm of your heart?
Oh. There it is. To your left. Another machine perhaps? Probably, it seemed likely. It beeped in a
soft chime in time with the thumping in your chest that you were aware of now. Huh...weird....

Who Is Petruchio In The Taming Of The Shrew
While the conclusion of The Taming of the Shrew seems to suggest that Kate s opinionated,
obstinate behavior has been subdued by Petruchio, further in depth analysis of her character
reveals that she is merely acting as the stereotypical submissive wife. The entire plot of this
comedy revolves around the challenge of finding a husband for Katherine the wild hawk and is
driven by the recurring themes of deceit and trickery (18). For example, Lucentio disguises
himself as the schoolteacher Cambio to become closer to and woo Bianca. Hortensio, also hoping
to win Bianca s hand, plays the role as the music teacher Litio. Arriving in Padua seeking a wealthy
wife, Petruchio assumes several personas to wed Katherine and tame her wild behavior. Each

submissive to him is to avoid his cruel punishments when she does not comply with his decisions.
After experiencing his abuse, she realizes that her life benefits more when acting as the dutiful
wife. Thus, Katherine conceals her true independent character. By the conclusion of the play, none
of the characters are persuaded that Katherine has been tamed. Lucentio proclaims in the final line,

How Did We Revolutionize Canada
Nothing could have better complimented the end of WW1 than the 1920s, also known as the
roaring twenties. This era is most notable for its help in revolutionizing Canada into a new
modern age and help shape Canada into what it is today. This was a time of many new
remarkable inventions like the automobile, the radio, and the telephone which all had advanced
and change how we live today. This era was also when Canada took the necessary steps in
achieving greater autonomy from Britain. Canadians believed that Canada should no longer be
controlled by a European power, so in the decades after war, Canada took steps toward
independence. Canada joined the League of Nations in 1919. This was one of the first times canada

Theme Of Absurdism In Waiting For Godot
Theatre of the absurd is one of the prominent schools of drama which flourished during the
twentieth century. Absurd plays usually convey the believe that human existence is pointless and
life is irrational, meaningless, and futile. Therefore, they illustrate humanity s correspondence to the
absurdity of the world especially after the two destructive world wars. Although people struggle to
give life meaning, their inability to find any led them to experience anxiety and confusion. As a
result, people started to doubt religion, question the existence of God, and suffer from weak faith.
Samuel Buckett s play Waiting for Godotdeals with several themes that highlights the absurdity of
human conditions. The play starts with Nothing to be done .... Show more content on

While language has a great importance for human beings, absurdists believe that language is
meaningless and useless. Beckett uses some techniques to emphasize this idea. First, the repetition
of words and phrases makes the language sounds incomprehensible. Vladimir and Estragon repeat
the dialog and sometimes reversed, but sill it has no meaning. Secondly, since people are isolated
and cut from each other, they cannot establish meaningful conversations. Accordingly, Vladimir and
Estragon cannot understanding each other when they have a conversation. They are just speaking
to fill their time while waiting. Language fragmentation adds one more level of absurdity to the

What Is The 1988 Reform Act To Present
There s little disbelief that education, as a social institution, has an important role to play in our
society (Moore, Aiken, Chapman, 2005). This essay will look further into the influences of social,
economic and political changes in Britain s education over the last 30 years. The essay will mainly
review and focus on the eras between the 1988 reform Act to present. This essay will explore further
into the influences of the national curriculum, how conservatives, labour and the coalition have
affected social and economic environments in educationand comparisons between the conservatives
and labour. It will also discuss, philosophers Dewey and Freire reviewing how both of their
methods of pedagogy has influenced teachers methods and approaches to teaching.
Successive conservatives in the 1980s increased the pace of improvement and reform and
introduced Market Mechanisms into the education system, in aim to force schools to increase their
standards of teaching (Ross Gibson, 2007). The real uprising in Britain s education legislation came
in 1988 when the education Reform Act was introduced, this Act is widely known to be the most
important since the 1944 Butlers Act (Meredith, 1989). The Act introduced the National
curriculum, so far being the most important provision, presenting new outcomes for secondary and
primary education. The National Curriculum sets out attainment targets, knowledge, skills and

An engagement in a gruesome ethnic cleansing must be treated as a felony, considering the amount

Multiple Choice, Binary Choice And Matching Questions Essay
Multiple Choice, Binary Choice, and Matching Questions
My greatest strength in writing multiple choice, binary choice, and matching questions is creating
scenarios for the multiple choice. I enjoyed writing these scenarios by making up stories that are
related to the content. I was also good at keeping track of what we have and what we needed to do.
Another strength I had was in creating binary choice question because there is only one right answer.
My greatest weakness was coming up with good alternate choices for the multiple choice. I had a
hard time with this because the ones that I came up with were either too obvious, not
homogeneous, or too similar. Another weakness I had was creating matching because I found it
hard to make them all homogeneous. They were also hard to make because we had to come up
with different responses that were similar in order for the premises not to stand out.
My contribution to the multiple choice, binary choice, and matching questions was that I created
many of multiple choice questions this was because I enjoyed writing the scenarios. I also wrote
some of the binary questions. I also contributed to the group by helping and collaborating on the
matching. I also help by keeping track of what we had in terms of number of different types of
questions and the number of learning objectives.
I would rate myself a ten out of a ten on my contribution to the multiple choice, binary, matching
questions because I did my share of crating the number

Essay on Anthony Burgess A Clockwork Orange
Anthony Burgess A Clockwork Orange
Choice and free will are necessary to maintain humanity, both individually and communally;
without them, man is no longer human but a clockwork orange , a mechanical toy, as
demonstrated in Anthony Burgess novel, A Clockwork Orange . The choice between good and
evil is a decision every man must make throughout his life in order to guide his actions and control
his future. Forcing someone to be good is not as important as the act of someone choosing to be
good. This element of choice, no matter what the outcome, displays man s power as an individual.
A Clockwork Orange starts with Alex posing the question: what s it going to be then, eh? . Burgess
begins the story by demonstrating that Alex ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

but the result of autonomy. The voice of reason in the prison is the prison Chaplin who questions

his characters, Burgess is stating that inhibiting a person s free will is more evil than a person s
ability to choose evil over good. If one cannot choose, one ceases to be human and is exactly like a
machine controlled by the government.
After Alex undergoes the Ludovico Technique, he stops asking what s it going to be then, eh?

to improve or modify current services. The first pillar, target market segment is essentially the

have the customer, they are able to offer more features such as a mortgage for undocumented

third pillar is the operating strategy. This factor focuses on the structure and order of the company.

although El Banco is located only in Georgia, they do employ a similar strategy in terms of
structure. They too are culturally homogenous, by focusing on their Hispanic constituents and
employing Spanish speaking workers. Two vast differences in their structure is that El Banco is
informal in their overall appearance and their business structure is a franchise company. Lastly, the
fourth pillar is service delivery system. This pillar

Coming Of Age In Hamlet Research Paper
Tragic stories have been around for thousands of years. The earliest forms were ancient Greek and
Roman myths and plays that told stories of magnificent heros and their quests of self fulfillment.
They became so prevalent in culture that a certain formula for writing them was developed. This
formula, called The Aristotelian Tragedy, would be used for thousands of years after the Greeks
came up with it. One of the most obvious uses of this formula is a play titled Hamlet by English
playwright William Shakespeare. His use of ideas like blood vengeance, coming of age, and the
downfall of a hero are directly connected to the ways of the ancient Greeks.
A very common idea within the realm of classical literature is blood vengeance. Blood vengeance ...

They add to another very important aspect of a tragedy. The coming of age of the protagonist is
a very key element according to the Aristotelian Tragedy. The whole point of the protagonist
going through all of the things they do in the story is to set up the moment where they finally
reach their coming of age. We can see that characters in a tragedy make very difficult decisions
and take them seriously. (Hajdu 2). Often within a tragedy, the hero starts out as a young and
inexperienced person with no experience killing, or making hard decisions. Through the tasks
that they are given, their morality is tested to the utmost extreme, and as a result, they come out
in the end as a wise, and honorable hero to themselves. In Hamlet, when he finds out that his
Uncle Claudius was the one who killed his father, he had to make a very quick decision about
what he should do. His morals and wisdom guide him to the right path, and he ends up killing his
Uncle. Orestes, faced with the task of killing his own mother, is torn apart. He struggles to find
the morality in killing the woman that had birthed him and raised him. Although this left him with

emerging quickly and leaving huge impressions. New inventions and scientific principles
emerged during WWII in fields such as weaponry, communications and effective defensive means
that helped lead the allies to total victory. Allied weapons technology developed at a rapid rate
during WWII and was crucial in overpowering the German and associated forces. Developments in
tanks, bombs and other weapons across many allied states, contributed to their victory. New
communication technology meant that forces could crypt and encrypt secret messages and detect
enemy forces from never seen before distances, making the idea of surprise attack virtually
impossible. Defensive technology, although not necessarily considered as a large part of the war
effort, played a crucial role in protecting the allied countries from invasion or surrender and
ultimately helped defeat the axis forces. Defensive systems were implemented by the allied
countries including Chain Home and the Maginot line that helped win back control. Development
of weapons technology is what primarily changed the tides of WWII, essentially winning the war

Differences between The Birds the Movie and The Birds...
The Birds
The Birds, the movie was directed by Alfred Hitchcock and was based on the short story The
Birds written by Daphne du Murrier. If you would have read the book and then watched the
movie, you would see that very few things are the same. In both the short story and the movie
flocks of gulls, robins, crows, and sparrows join each other. This is really weird because different
species of birds never work together. The story and the film both have the same climate. It is cold
and chilly; the ground is frozen and it will be a black winter. The climate gives the versions of the
story a creepy and suspenseful feeling.
Each version also has the main characters boarding up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Is Melanie or the lovebirds really evil in the film, or in the story is it just the black winter and the
tides?
The short story and the film have differences too but none of these differences really affected the
main plot. The short story s setting is placed just south of London, England right after World
War II. The films setting is in Bodega Bay just a little ways away from San Francisco and takes
place in the 1960 s. In the film a mad woman accused Melanie of bringing evil and causing the
attacking of the birds. In the story birds attacked when the tide came in and in the film the birds
attack at different times, over and over.
The characters are totally different in the two versions. The short story s main characters are a
family; a husband, a wife, and two children. The film s characters are a woman and a man, and the
man s mother and younger sister.
In the film, it shows more of the school and the children then it does in the short story. The radio is
also more involved in the short story then it is in the film.
More events happen in the film, such as the fire at the gas station and the restaurant. The film shows
more details then the short story and helps you visualize the attacks more.
There is no real ending to the

Primary Lymphedema Paper
Primary lymphedema occurs due to an intrinsic, most of the time genetic, aberration in the
lymphatic vasculature. Over the past decade, some of the key genetic factors leading to primary
lymphedema have been elucidated. In 2013, Connel and his colleagues created a clinical algorithm
for the diagnosis of primary lymphatic dysplasia [Figure 3.0].23 The figure demonstrates nine
causal mutations linked to primary lymphedema and we will briefly discuss some of these.
3.1 Milroy Disease
Milroy disease is a form of primary lymphedema, which presents with progressive swelling of the
face and lower extremities.24 It is characterized by the absence or marked diminution of lymphatic
vessels.25 Some cases have been associated with missense mutations in vascular endothelial growth
factor receptor 3 receptor tyrosine kinase (VEGFR3).26 The underlying pathology for this disease
is not the mere absence of initial lymphatic capillaries but the inadequacy of initial lymphatic fluid
absorption.3
3.2. Hennekam Syndrome
Hennekam syndrome, a rare autosomal recessive disorder, is characterized by lymphangiectasia
along with mental retardation.27 Limb and facial edema may be apparent at ... Show more content

Occurrence of lymphedema and distichiasis at puberty comprise the clinical diagnostic criteria.31
In LDS, germline mutations in forkhead transcription factor C2 (FOXC2) gene mutations have been
implicated.31 This gene is integral in the development of lymphatic vasculature.32 In patients with
FOXC2 mutation, 100% will have superficial vein incompetence while a third will have deep vein
incompetence.33 The resulting venous stasis explains the edema. In a very recent study, even
mutations FOXC1 were noted to cause abnormal lymphatic vessel morphogenesis.34 This
discovery recognizes both FOXC1 and FOXC2 as fundamental controllers of lymphangiogenesis
and demonstrates another potential target for the management of

Dental Cavities And Periodontal Disease
In my opinion, I believe that three most important social issues in dentistry today are the high
rates of dental cavities and periodontal disease in which are major causes of tooth loss.
Worldwide majority of school children and most adults have dental cavities. Dental cavities, also
known as tooth decay, or caries are the result bacteria in your mouth that then turns into acids. The
bacteria, acids, food and other debris combine to form plaque. The plaque sticks to the teeth and
begins to dissolve the teeth creating the holes that we call cavities. Dental cavities can cause pain
and discomfort. Cavities are bad because they can damage your teeth and even cause you to lose
your teeth.
Periodontal disease is the infection and inflammation of tissues that support your teeth. Many
adults have some sort of form of the disease. Periodontal disease can ange from gum inflammation
to a serious disease that s causes damage to the tissues and even bone that support the teeth and can
cause teeth to be lost. Like cavities whatever is in our mouth turns into acid, and causes build up

When a tooth is lost, it lacks the stimulation to the surrounding bone that result in a decrease in
the tooth s density and dimension. Meaning there is a loss of width and height of the bone; like
the jaw. When teeth are lost the facial aging, process is more rapid. A decrease in face height
occurs because of the bone loss when teeth are lost. This results in many facial changes such as a
decrease in the angle next to the lips and deepening of the vertical lines of the lip creating a
harsher appearance. As bone loss progresses the chin rotates forward making one look unhappy
with their mouth at rest. Another effect is lower intake of foods due to trouble chewing. This
reduces the nutritional intake and can cause several more health problems like illness, debilitation
and a shortened life

Ludwig Van Beethoven ( 1770-1827 )
Introduction
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 1827) was a German composer, pianist and a key figure in the
evolution of Classical music to Romanticism. While he is known as a key figure in the musical
world, he faced the challenge of losing his hearing within the last 10 years of his life.
History
Born in the city of Bonn, Germany to Maria Magdalena and Johann van Beethoven. Naturally
gifted in the field of music since a young age, he was first taught by his alcoholic father, who was
rumored to have, flogged, locked in the cellar and deprived of sleep for extra hours of practice,

being taught by several other famous teachers: Court organist Gilles van den Eeden, Tobias
Friedrich Pfeiffer, who taught Beethoven the piano, and Franz Rovantini, a relative, who instructed
him in playing the violin and viola. After 1779, Beethoven started his studies under Christian
Gottlob Neefe, a renowned opera composer and conductor. Ludwig was also known to have been a
close friend of prolific Austrian composer Joseph Haydn and intended to study with Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart.
Music
Beethoven s music, which was broken up into three periods, also reflected his hearing loss.
His Early Period music, which contained higher notes, had a number of was known for a number

Producer: Margo Burns
Description: 17th Century New England and the Salem Witchcraft Trials
17th Century Colonial New England The 17th Century Colonial New England historical website
was produced and maintained by Margo Burns. Margo Burns is an independent scholar with a
bachelor s degree in English from Mount Holyoke College. While she has no academic background
in history, she has a growing reputation for specializing in the Salem witch trials, especially those in
North Andover. There is much history to explore in the 17th century; however, the witch trials of
Salem have attracted more scholarly attention than most events in colonial America. Although some
of the recent scholarship examines these trials, there is still so much more to learn about this
revolutionary event that impacted the American society. The Web site, 17th Century Colonial New
England, can help mitigate interested researchers. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although she is one of many thousands of such descendants, the intriguing trials of Salem have
long fascinated writers and historians. In addition, she derived an interest in the subject when she
got her role as an Associate Editor and Project Manager of the new book of scholarly
transcriptions of all the primary sources of the legal records of the witchcraft prosecutions...
Therefore, as the site s creator, Burns provides a topical structured website with nine documents
from the trials; an account of one witchcraft trial written by Cotton Mather; four documents from
Salem court records; an annotated bibliography with 26 titles; a table listing more than 200 people
accused of witchcraft from their place of residence, a year of accusation, and jurisdiction; and a

It is very easy to fall in love with the hero. The nobleman who commits no wrong, saves the day,
and usually looks good doing it. But the best characters aren t thoroughly perfect and selfless like
we would like them to be, because in the end, that s not real life. The best, most relatable
characters are those in which we can associate, abhor, and admire all at the same time. Sophocles,
William Shakespeare, and Arthur Miller were able to capture this characterin the tragic hero. A
character who, despite their human nature, ends up destroying themselves because of their own
faults. Though these three playwrights display the tragic model in different ways, they all come
back to point out the flaws in human nature through five stages; nobility,... Show more content on

As radium continued to increase in popularity, more uses for the material emerged. The U.S.
Radium Corporation began making big money on having their workers paint watch dials with
radium luminescent paint known as Undark. Not only were these watches practical for everyday
life, they were also helpful with the war effort and provided young women with jobs to help
support their families with. The factories were clean and well lit, and the girls were paid 8 cents
a dial and could earn as much as $24 a day. However as these girls were painting their 300 dials a
day, people didn t seem to notice that the average painter consumed approximately 4,000
micrograms of radium in six months , as they pointed the tips of their brushes on their lips to get a
better point (Moss). The hamartia never truly became apparent to anyone until girls such as Amelia
Maggia started developing the symptoms of radiation poisoning. For most girls it started with tooth
decay, so The dentist would remove the rotten teeth, already practically falling out of the girls
mouths, but the gums wouldn t heal. Instead, agonising ulcers sprouted in the holes left behind.
Very often their jawbones crumbled to the touch (Fergusson). However, instead of looking for
answers in these never before seen medical ailments, Amelia Maggia s death was reported as
syphilis. This left radium and the U.S. Radium Corporation unblemished, but instead brought
humiliation to the families of the innocent girls like Amelia. As we see the radiation begin to
poison more and more unknowing citizens, it becomes clear that it is those side effects that act as
the equivalent of the hamartia in the tragic model, as it takes control of the entire element just as
ambition took full control of Macbeth without him realizing

The Probate Process
Probate is a process which begins when an individual passes away. This legal process oversees
the administration of the person s estate and the resolution of any claims that may be placed on
this estate. Upon completion of the debt resolution process, assets are distributed as laid out by
the person who passed away. Probate law is the area of law that interprets any instructions of the
person who is deceased and determines who will become executor of the will and serve as this
person s personal representative. In addition, it adjudicates the interests of anyone who has a claim
against the estate, including heirs and other parties.
The Administration Of Probate Law
The first step in the probate process involves formally declaring the will of the deceased to be
valid. Legal notices must be published and all creditors notified when the individual passes away.
The law outlines how assets must be distributed and creditors paid and puts time constraints on the
filing and object of claims against this estate. Separate procedures are needed when an ... Show

Visual Exploration Of Video Games
Through the course of the English 1102 Folklore In Video Games class, I not only gained
exposure to the analytic exploration of video games, but developed as a reader, writer, and

learning how to analyze these games and showcase my knowledge through multimodal projects and

The peer review process was critical towards the improvement of my work. For the first artifact,
which was the standard essay, I drafted the essay and received feedback on my thesis via email
from my professor Dr. Addcox as well as my roommate. The changes suggested to me clarified
my paper and strengthened my argument. It was in my second artifact however that I realized
the importance of getting an outside opinion on my work. For this assignment I had to create a
new storyline for a video game we played in class. The storyline we created had to be a
branching narrative and under the pressure of developing my own storyline my storyline was not
a proper branching narrative. After developing my first draft, I had a collaborative conference
with my professor (Dr. Addcox), where I received feedback which helped me incorporate a
branching narrative structure into my idea. I then had a comprehensive peer review session with a
classmate, which allowed me to refine my storyline and improve upon details.
The first two artifacts that were individually completed taught me how to work with discipline
over a period of time, something that I had not often done in high school. For the first assignment
a blog post based on a short reading had to be converted into a polished essay. While this seemed
like a simple task, I had to re read the short story to develop a purposeful thesis and had to add

The Culture Of China And The Chinese Culture
China is one of the oldest civilization s still around to this day. The Chinese culture has been
around with records over 4000 years old. During its time, it has been both Democratic party and a
Communist party, and is still to this day is a Communist party. While the Communist party has
adopted aspects of capitalism, and over the years has relinquished some control. The Chinese
culture is very different from that of America, as the Chinese government still has strict control
over speech, assembly and belief overall affecting their culture. Culture includes religion, food,
style, language, marriage, morals, military and many other things that make up how a country or
group can act.
China has the second largest economy and one of the biggest stock exchanges the industry and the
agricultural sectors provide the largest revenue for the state. The United States of America has the
largest economy followed by the Republic of China. In terms of Population, China has the largest
population, then India followed by the USA. These factors and the economic considerations have
placed the country being a world superpower in the near future with the rapid economic
developments. The economic stability of the country can also be attributed to the cultural
development of the ancient China states. The country was generally socialist, but recent times have
seen a transformation from the socialists to the capitalist side. Although the country can be said to
have gained economic

The government collects basic information on a person and then makes sure they

would have well educated and informed voters who are easy contact. Having read about Mrs.
Hamer s experience trying to register to vote makes the situation seems, for a lack of a better
term, less black and white. The system doesn t scream corruption. It makes it easy for moderates
to exist. Only people that put some thought into what was going on or went to register to vote
and was denied would start to see the problems that existed and the real motives behind the
system. Often disenfranchisement is presented as this giant splinter in a people s eyes. It is

Many people are quick to over glorify Martin Luther King Jr. They will make him sound

Juvenile Crime Essay
One of the biggest problems which the United States is faced with is juvenile crime. The reason
experts feel juvenile s commit crimes is because of risk factors when they were younger but
experts still have not found the main reason why juvenile s commit crimes. Some risk factors
associated with juvenile crimeare poverty, repeated exposure to violence, drugs, easy access to
firearms, unstable family life and family violence, delinquent peer groups, and media violence.

Another risk factor is the effect of the media on the juveniles of today. Before the time a child
has reached seventh grade, the average child has witnessed 8,000 murders and 100,000 acts of
violence on the television. There is no doubt that heavy exposure to televised violence is one of
the causes of aggressive behavior, crime and violence in society. Television violence affects
youngsters of all ages, of both genders, at all economic levels, and all levels of intelligence. Long
term childhood exposure to television is a casual factor behind one half of the homicides committed
by juveniles in the United States.
The increased availability of guns has played a big part in escalating the number of crimes
committed by juveniles.
In Los Angeles juvenile delinquency cases involving weapon violation grew by 86% from 1988
to 1992, which was more then any other type of juvenile offense. According to a University of
Michigan study found that 270,000 guns accompany secondary school students to class daily. This
is startling because it shows how many more juveniles are carrying guns and the juvenile use of
guns in homicides has increased from 65 to 80 percent from 1987 to 1991.
The possession of firearms plays a big cause in the delinquency of children and is playing a bigger

  • 2. Fire Interpreting Evidence Haely Pratt J. Tristan PHIL 1106 002 Trial by Fire: Interpreting Evidence In late 1992, Cameron Todd Willingham was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death for a fire that claimed the lives of his three daughters the previous December. During the trial, the prosecution cited evidence from two arson investigators, Douglass Fogg and Manuel Vasquez, listing more than twenty indicators of arson, along with testimony from medical experts and other witnesses. The trial lasted only two days and resulted in a unanimous guilty verdict. However, now following Willingham s execution, it has come to light that much of the evidence used in his conviction in no way guarantees that arson had occurred. If this is true, the state may have put an... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They found pour patterns in the home that indicated a flammable or combustible liquid [had been] doused on [the] floor and caused the fire to concentrate, crazed glass that had been cited in textbooks as being the result of a fire burning fast and hot, which also indicated a liquid accelerant, and V shaped soot marks that pointed to multiple origins and the fire having been intentionally set by human hands. They also cited the path of the fire the burn trailer being abnormal as it turned sharply toward the front door. Finally, a sample taken from the home revealed the presence of mineral spirits, a substance that is often found in charcoal lighter fluid, near the front door. They concluded that the evidence simply didn t match up with Willingham s version of events. The remaining evidence came from witness testimony, such as an inmate in the same jail who alleged that Willingham had confessed to him, neighbors, firefighters, and police that were at the scene, and testimony from medical experts. Pray points out the much attention that has been devoted to research to help prevent crimes. Showing criminals the errors of their ways not by brutal punishment, but by locking them up in the attempt to reform them. Robert Pray, who is a prison psychologist, is currently a researcher with the Utah Dept. of Corrections. He has seen what has become of our prison system and easily shows us that there is really no such thing as quot;Prison Reform quot; In Roger Prays essay we see how our prison system has come to where we are at now. They felt that the brutal criminal punishment was irreconcilable with their Christian beliefs. So in 1786, they persuaded the Pennsylvania legislature to limit the death penalty to murder, treason, rape and arson. It was then that all other criminals would have to be imprisoned for up to ten years. As the population grew and more people where getting sent to prison instead of being executed the prison began to get crowded. The Walnut Street prison, which was the first prison, built in 1790 was a prototype for other prisons to be built over the next 30 years. By the year 1817 the prison began to deteriorate. Changes and overcrowding of prisoners in one room pushed Pennsylvania legislature to build more prisons. In 1817 two more prisons where built, one in eastern and one in western Pennsylvania. They built these prisons with separate cell areas, so each inmate could be kept alone, eliminating all the problems of congregate living. The idea of having separate cells did not originate in America. quot;Of course the notion of forcibly confining people is ancient and there is extensive evidence that the Romans had a well developed system for imprisoning different types of offenders. quot; (Meskelly). It was the Auburn jail that added a new system to imprisonment. It was solitary confinement. At the time many criminals had mental breakdowns being locked up in one room by themselves for years. Propaganda works on the general public from the standpoint of an idea and makes them ripe for the victory of this idea, (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum 1) written by Adolf Hitler in his book Mein Kampf published in 1925. Propaganda is defined as the spreading of ideas, information or rumors for the purpose of helping or hurting an institution (Propaganda in Nazi Germany 1). After the Nazi seizure of power in 1933, they used this method of persuasion to spread the ideas of National Socialism, racism, anti Semitism, and to explain who was excluded from Hitler s perfect community. Hitler believed the Aryan people and those of true German decent were predestined to rule the world. All other races were seen as a threat to the end product of his master plan(The Holocaust Explained). This led to deportation, being forced to live in ghettos, and eventually the killing of races seen as degenerates to the Nazi party. Propaganda was used to create stereotypes and bad images of Jews and other unworthy races, while creating a fear, distrust and eventually a hatred of these supposed enemies. Anti Semitic and other racist propaganda was used to justify the status of pariah being given to Jews and others deemed as undesirables (The Chief). This form of manipulation also helped to portray Germany as the defender of the west after the German invasion of the Soviet Union. The propaganda painted a catastrophic image of what would have happened if the Soviets would have won, hoping with this, German citizens would better support the Nazis in the war efforts (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum ... • 5. Social Darwinism In The Challenge Of Facts By Maudsley Advocated for by English philospher, sociologist, and prominent classical liberal political theorist, Herbert Spencer, Social Darwinism is essentially the theory that individuals and groups of people are subject to the same Darwinian laws of natural selection as plants and animals, that their struggle for existence is ultimately a competition that results in a survival of the fittest scenario. American sociologist, economist, William Sumner along with renowned British psychiatrist, Dr. Henry Maudsley, were both prolific proponents of Social Darwinismand argued that their evidence in support of Social Darwinism were scientific and that Social Darwinism as a theory itself, was science. In his essay The Challenge of Facts, Sumner argues that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this article he argues that providing higher education to adolescent girls would not only produce permanent injury to their reproductive organs, but to their brains as well. He insists that a great amount of stress and change affects the psychological functions of girls going through puberty and that because of their delicate constitution during this time, they would be subjected to exhaustive mental strain by pursuing the same courses of study and being subjected to the same examinations as their more verile and strong minded male counterparts, for there is sex in mind as distinctly and there is sex in body...and regard must be had to the mental qualities which correlate difference of sex. (79) Maudsley claims that even when these functions are in good working order and the woman as arrived at maturity, the facts of her organization interfere periodically to such an extent with steady and serious labour of mind or body that she can never hope to compete successfully with men. Instead, Maudsley suggests that women stick with what they and their mental capacities were built for, i.e. to be companions and helpmates to men, and conceivers, mothers, and nurses to children, arguing that men are not so fitted mentally as women to be the educators and caregivers of children during the early years of infancy and childhood. (81) However, because women are provided with certain qualities specifically catered to fostering the growth of children, it only makes sense for her to focus what little energy she has to doing just that and leave the more psychologically intense work to the men. Further, Maudsley continues to paint a dire picture of the inevitable results of women s over expenditure of her vital energy. While the stimuli of competition in men is healthy and brings out the best in them, for women it would cause the calamitous denigration ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Hebrew Diaspora The Jews faced a long history of persecution and racism. Envy, greed, and thirst for power caused groups such as the Assyrians, Babylonians, and Romans (to name a few) to persecute, exile, and threaten the existence of the Hebrew community. The Diaspora was definitely not a single event taking place over the course of one night, it was rather a series of dispersals by varying groups of people continuing up to the present time. The Diaspora resulted in the spread of the Hebrew population along with their culture and beliefs, which ultimately strengthened the Hebrew community. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This occurred to concentrate the various skills of the Jewish in separate arenas and to use these individually skilled communities for the benefit of the Babylonians. For example, as previously mentioned the most skilled and elite Jews were dispersed to Babylon the heart of the Babylonian empire. Thus, the better trained and more adept a Jew was, the more opportunity the Jew had to serve for empire in higher ranks solely to meet the needs of the empire and its rulers. This helped the empires exiling the Jews to prosper, but unfortunately created rifts and gaps within the Hebrew community. This pattern of dispersion, which was developed by the Babylonians and used by the Romans to scatter the Jews, allowed for these dominant empires to prosper, however, limited the interaction within the Hebrew community and resulted in the diminishing originality and novelty of the skilled Jews. Despite the use of the uniform dispersion pattern based on the occupations of the Jews, the reason why Jews were exiled and dispersed varied depending on the imposing empire of the time, which performed these actions. The Hebrew Diaspora was caused by different factors depending on the group exiling the Hebrews. In other words, the reason for dispersing the Hebrews depended on the context of time, circumstance, and those carrying out the exile. I intended the place to be a relaxation centre for the community in an area. The place has to be larger than private residential space as it is intended for the public. • 8. Hope Is The Thing With Feathers By Emily Dickinson Analyzing Birds and Hopes in Hope is the thing with feathers Is hope a thing with feathers? Hard to believe it, right? Hope is the thing with feathers is one of the best well known poems of Emily Dickinson. An inspiring story, connecting the significance of hope with a bird that it s permanently perching the soul of every human. The author of this poem, Emily Dickinson, wrote this extended metaphor in 1862. Only seven poems from 1800 poems that she wrote got published when she was alive. This poem has a very good use of the language, different types of rhythm, and stands out the word Hope which reminds all of us that no matter how are the circumstances if you are singing and have hopes you can change the consequences. I will analyze the use of symbolism and language that Emily Dickinson uses in Hope is the thing with feathers to convey the setting and the theme of the poem. Establishing the poem s theme, the speaker begins: Hope is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul And sings the tune without the words And never stops at all . (Dickinson lines 1 4)... • 9. The Home By Edgar Guest Essay The Home Edgar Guest wrote: I d rather see a sermon than hear one any day; I d rather one should walk with me than merely tell the way. The eye is a better pupil, more willing than the ear; Fine counsel is confusing, but example is always clear, And the best of all the preachers are the men who live their creeds, For to see a good put in action is what everybody needs. I can soon learn how to do it if you will let me see it done; I can watch your hand in action, but your tongue too fast may run. And the lectures you deliver may be very wise and true, But I d rather get my lesson by observing what you do. For I may misunderstand you and the high advice you give, But there is no misunderstanding how you act and how you live. [Edgar Guest] When I was a boy, our house was on a little hill several yards off the mail route. We could see the road alright; however, the mailbox was a long walk from our front porch. Anyway, when we saw people coming up that path, we knew they were coming to our house, because it was the only one up there. But, what I remember most about that was all that took place from the time we saw our company coming up that path until they reached our front porch. Why, you never saw so much straightening up, sprucing up and putting up. And, then there was that smile, which was always reserved for company. I used to wonder about that then and I still wonder about it so far as most homes go. Why couldn t we have some of that when we didn t have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Proton- Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) Essay A H2/O2 protonв€’exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is a clean, sustainable energy source and suitable for the operation of small electronic device [1]. Among many problems that still exist for PEMFC, the sluggish reactions at the cathode electrode and poor mass transport of protons and electron decrease the fuel cell performance by increasing the activation overvoltage, or activation loss [2]. This problem can, however, be solved by raising the fuel cell operating temperature [3], but only up to a certain temperature before the deformation or degradatation of polymeric components occurs. Thus, the reduction in the activation overvoltage for low temperature fuel cell operation is still necessary when the PEMFC components are made of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Epichlorohydrin is suitable to be used as a crosslinking agent for crosslinking chitosan as it only reacts with the hydroxyl groups of chitosan, leaving the primary amine groups free to bind with protons or water molecules (both of which contribute to the proton mitigation). The current study thus focuses on the effects of the operating temperature and relative humidity (RH) on performances of H2/O2 PEM fuel cells, which are assembled with Pt/C which have previously been treated by using various epichlorohydrin amounts. In this scenario, all six elements to prove malpractice are present. The negligence is by licensed personnel in a hospital setting. Using the definitions and criteria above, the newspaper incorrectly defines the mishap as negligence. The correct term to use in this case is professional negligence or malpractice. Nursing documentation should be reflective of the patient s hospital stay. This includes identifying and addressing patient needs, assessments, problems, limitations, and responses to nursing interventions. According to Guido (2010), Documentation must show continuity of care, interventions that were implemented, and patient responses to the therapies implemented. Nurses notes are to be concise, clear, timely, and complete (p. 197). Guido (2010) lists the following guidelines for nurses to use to ensure documentation is complete and accurate (p. 197 209): 1.Make an entry for every observation. Through interaction, we socialize with our family, friends, people in the community to strengthen our relationship with each other. Through socialization, human society is established and become the foundation for everything inside the society. Our society is more complex than any society found in nature, but it s not perfect nor ideal for every member inside the society. Thus, the thought of an ideal society as well as how to achieve that society is very fascinating among sociologists, whose role is to solve social problems and develop this theory. Human society is composed of multiple factors: individuals who work together in the same environment and contribute to the society; cultures which were passed down by previous generations and become the foundation for the future in spirituals, values, beliefs and norms; materials that people consume or use to develop society and improve their live (agriculture, infrastructure...); social organizations and institutions which regulate the behavior of people like laws, religions, government, religions...to help guide them down the path accepted by the majority. Moreover, as reported by Health Department WTC s Health Registry, the attacks brought on the post traumatic stress disorder, and they concluded that 1,140 people who worked near the Manhattan and the New York City at the time are diagnosed with cancer caused by exposure to toxins at Ground Zero (Bendix). On September 11, President George W Bush addressed a plausible but flawed explanation, America was targeted for attack because we re the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world. And no one will keep that light from shining (The Boston Globe), which indirectly reveals that Bush is blaming Muslims for the fault for 911 attacks. While most of the Americans believe that Muslims are fully responsible for the 911 attacks, the U.S involvement in Middle East affairs and the exploitation of Middle East resources sparked off ... Most dermatologist work in a group clinic. Working in a group clinic is very helpful because they share many of the same patients. It is a lot easier to communicate information about a patient when most of the doctors work in the same place. People aspiring to be a dermatologist need to be able to work long hours, be able to handle stress, emotionally stable, patient, and have problem solving skills. A bachelor s degree is the minimum degree a person can have to become a dermatologist. Math, English, physics, biology, and inorganic and organic chemistry will most likely be required with a bachelor s degree. Most people have more advanced degrees, but they are not needed. It is because there are so few, if any, other events that truly inspire international cooperation and unity like they do. If one can imagine these events as a mirrors reflecting back the organization of international politics, the mega events show a picture of incredible harmony and cooperation (Segrave, 1988). Inherent in that picture of harmony is the opportunity to spread important ideals such as equality, freedom, and democracy throughout the world. In addition global mega events like the world cup and the Olympics have become incredibly effective tools for reorganizing an economy on neoliberal grounds. The Olympics in particular has emerged as the premier event in the international community. However, for all its acclaim, the presentation of the games is drastically different from the games of old. Throughout the evolution the intentions of the games has been skewed. As a result, the modern games, as we know them portray an interesting question politically and economically. In this chapter I will discuss the evolution of the Games conceptually, in order to pose the ultimate question; Why host the Olympics? • 18. The Family Systems Theory During The Mid 20th Century Murray Bowen, an American psychiatrist, began developing what would become known as the family systems theory during the mid 20th century. He believed that the family was an emotional unit and that it could be best understood by looking not just at current family interactions but the interactions of prior generations as well (Helm, 2009). His focus was on using theory, not therapy, to treat the patient and the cornerstone of that theory is that human behavior is based on a person being able to maintain intimacy with loved ones while differentiating themselves sufficiently as individuals so as not to be swept up by what is transpiring within the family(p. 205). At both the Menninger Clinic and the National Institute of Mental Health, Bowen became interested in schizophrenia specifically in relation to the mother and child. He soon realized that he needed to focus on the entire family rather than just mother and child to provide a more accurate picture for his research. The Bowen Family Systems theory was born of this realization. The basic premise of the family systems theory is that the therapist cannot fully understand or successfully treat the client without first grasping how that individual functions within their family system. To this end, Bowen postulated eight interlocking concepts for the family as an emotional unit and they are differentiation of self, triangles, nuclear family emotional process, family projection process, emotional cutoff, multigenerational ... Research was also collected on precipitating and perpetuating factors to explore what factors trigger the disorder and subsequently prolong the symptoms. The optimal goal of treatment for patients with IED is remission, which is the resolution of symptoms or improvement to the point where only one or two symptoms of mild intensity persist. If that goal is unattainable a practical goal is stabilizing the safety of the patient and others as well as substantially improving the number, intensity, and frequency of symptoms. To achieve these treatment goals studies have shown the best treatment is a combination of medication and psychotherapy (Alpert Spillmann, 1997). The use of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) Fluoxetine has shown moderate to large improvement in the reduction of impulsive aggressive behavior. The goal of the Fluoxetine is to balance out the altered serotonin levels that are commonly altered in individuals with IED (Coccaro, M.D., 2012). In addition to medication cognitive behavioral therapy has been shown to reduce impulsive aggression, anger, and hostile automatic thoughts. The therapies used include relaxation training, cognitive restructuring, and coping skills training. The rates of full remission from IED were 29% with fluoxetine alone and 33% from cognitive behavioral therapy alone. When combined the treatments are more effective for sustained remission because they work through different mechanisms (Coccaro, M.D., 2012). Studies have shown that IED symptoms precede the onset of other comorbid disorders and are persistent and follow a chronic course of at least 12 years. One of the most obvious uses of this formula is a play titled Hamlet by English playwright William Shakespeare. The Second World War (WWII) was a devastating global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945, causing struggle and suffering across much of the world s nations. During this period, technological developments increased significantly and advancements in every field of war were emerging quickly and leaving huge impressions. New inventions and scientific principles emerged during WWII in fields such as weaponry, communications and effective defensive means that helped lead the allies to total victory. Allied weapons technology developed at a rapid rate during WWII and was crucial in overpowering the German and associated forces. Developments in tanks, bombs and other weapons across many allied states, contributed to their victory. New communication technology meant that forces could crypt and encrypt secret messages and detect enemy forces from never seen before distances, making the idea of surprise attack virtually impossible. Defensive technology, although not necessarily considered as a large part of the war effort, played a crucial role in protecting the allied countries from invasion or surrender and ultimately helped defeat the axis forces. Defensive systems were implemented by the allied countries including Chain Home and the Maginot line that helped win back control.
