billet, rod, or tube are continuous cast, defined
as the continuous solidification and withdrawal
of product from an open-ended shaping mold.
Methods include both vertical and horizontal
casting, depending on product size, shape, and
volume. Casting vertically has certain inherent
technical advantages. The symmetry of cooling
promotes a uniform and predictable solidification
growth pattern and uniform axial loading
on the freshly solidified shell as it is withdrawn
from the mold. In tube or hollow section casting,
the vertical process has particular merit.
The disadvantages of vertical casting are
mostly logistic: difficulty in handling long
lengths of section; cut-off can be more difficult
to engineer and control; and it is generally a
semicontinuous operation. Horizontal casting
requires lower capital investment, is compatible
with lower production rates, and is a continuous
operation.
This article briefly reviews the history and
methods of copper alloy continuous casting;
the information is drawn from the very detailed
and extensive coverage of the subject in Ref 1
and the numerous publications of equipment
supply companies such as Rautomead, SMS
Meer, and so on

Aluminium is an element in the boron group with symbol Al and atomic number 13
Aluminium is so called because it is a base of “alum,” which in turn is derived from the Latin for “bitter salt.”
Aluminium is the second most plentiful metallic element on earth; an estimated 8.3% of the earth crust is composed of aluminium.

This paper deals with the problem of robust jointly state and fault estimation (actuator and sensor) observer design for discrete-time Descriptor-Linear Parameter Varying (D-LPV) with unmeasurable gain scheduling. The proposed approach is based on the H ∞ synthesis applied to the state estimation error. Sufficient conditions are given by a set of Linear Matrix
Inequalities (LMIs), which guarantee robustness to disturbances/noise and to the error given by the unmeasurable gain scheduling functions. Thus, the main contribution is to develop a conceptually simple integrated procedure to estimate states, sensor or actuator faults. In order to illustrate the methodology, simulations based on a realistic model of binary distillation column are considered.

This briefing note focuses on the pyro-metallurgical recycling of copper squirrel cage rotors used in electrical motors (Copper Rotor Motors or CRM). Like conventional electrical motors, after adequate sorting of the different metals, they can be easily recycled with existing technologies. This can achieve an almost 100% recovery of copper in a highly purified state and the formation of a valuable iron-silicon slag suitable for a variety of applications after granulation, including materials suitable for infrastructure construction. The same technology holds also for other copper/steel and copper/stainless steel composites. Indeed, in the latter, a large fraction of the nickel contained in the steel is recoverable separately.
