The Modern Prometheus In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein
The Modern Prometheus, a term coined by Mary Shelly in her novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern
Prometheus. A modern Prometheus is a term used to describe someone who crosses an invisible
boundary and brings something into this world, which might have a very large or a very small
impact, that humanity loses the ability to control. In Frankenstein, Mary Shelly names Victor
Frankenstein as a Modern Prometheus. Like the Prometheus from the myths, he steps over the
boundaries and creates a superhuman homunculus who he cannot control, and who eventually
destroys everything that was important in life for Victor. A modern Prometheus, however, does not
always create something that is harmful, but rather something that can cause harm because it is

Social media had been around for approximately 7 years when Facebook was originally launch
the first site being Six Degrees, which was launched in the spring of 1997 (CBC News Staff).
However, it is not the introduction of the idea of social media that makes Zuckerberg a modern
Prometheus, but rather the extraordinary growth and success of his creation, Facebook, that gives
him this title. Mark Zuckerberg recently said that ...Just wanting to connect people has been a
pretty deep thing for me...it s something that I have cared about since I was a kid... (Zuckerberg,
Highlights from Q A with Mark). He then goes on to recount how, when he was a child, he wanted
all children to communicate to resolve their issues rather than fighting over them. Facebook was
designed to help people connect and communicate with each other. However, Zuckerberg himself
said ...you know, Facebook is not a static thing... (Zuckerberg, Highlights from Q A with Mark).
This constant transformation of Facebook is slowly but surely pushing the boundaries of what we
as humans had and has gradually given us something of which the implications go far beyond what
anyone could have imagined 11 years ago when Facebook was first

The Influence Of Jazz Music
Jazz is one of few purely American art forms. Its creation came out of the southern United States
and the social conditions associated with the relationship between the white and African American
communities there (Larson 1). African American musicians in particular were the key proponents
in the development of jazzin the early 20th century. The creation and shaping of jazz music came
from a combination of the musical styles of spirituals, the blues, ragtime, and Western European
classical music (Larson 37 38). Although jazz originated from these four styles, defining jazz
itself cannot be done so plainly. Since its origin, jazz has continued to progress and branch out into
a wide variety of musical styles and genres. At its root, jazz is about the individual expression of
the musician (Larson 2). John Coltranewas one of many musicians that used jazz as this medium.
Through his early works in the bebop and hard bop styles to free form and more spiritual styled
music later in his career, Coltrane pursued deeper expression from his music (Wikipedia). John
Coltrane s upbringing and early interest in music led to a successful career of highly innovative
works that have left a lasting legacy and influence on the jazz community.
John William Coltrane was born September 23, 1926 in Hamlet, North Carolina. His family moved
to High Point, North Carolina shortly after his birth and would remain there throughout his
childhood. Coltrane s family embraced music and it became an

Pros And Cons Of Self Driving Cars
Technology is ever advancing in our society today. It continues to progress and further itself and it
is benefiting us substantially. It is helping our epistemological understanding on the way the world
operates and how to further our work and understanding of the world. It is benefiting us
economically, making it faster to produce goods and creating new ways to make money. One of the
fastest growing ways to earn a fortune is that of the automobileindustry and the evolution of cars. In
the early 1900 s, Henry Ford start the assembly line for the Model T, which mass produced cars. It
evolves with interchangeable parts, so if something broke it was less expensive to repair. 100 years
later, we now look to make cars able to drive on their own, self driving cars, but is it a good idea?
There are many benefits and just as many negatives to having a self driving car, and this will be a
brief synopsis on what some of these reasons are.
There are several ways that these self driving cars can be manufactured and operated in order to
make them how they are. One method is to attach a copious amount of sensors to the vehicle so
anytime it senses an object coming it ll avoid it. This method wouldn t be very practical,
however, because oncoming traffic would run the car off the road. There would also be no way to
keep the vehicle in the road because there would be nothing to keep the vehicle on the road. Or,
possibly, the sensors could go bad if they get covered with elements anywhere in

Catch 22 Genres
Genres are categorizations of any media based on established similarities in writing style and
conventions. Instead of a strict set of rules, works under genres typically follow a loose set of
guidelines. For example, movies under the horror genre typically employ suspense and mystery to
give viewers a sense of unease and discomfort. One example of a genreis superhero fiction, chosen
mainly because it is one of the most popular genres in movies today. Within this genre, the
protagonist or hero is often a superhuman, a person who wields one or more superpower; the
antagonist or villain also wields superpowers in order to provide conflict to the protagonist. Action
scenes between the hero and the villain or the hero and the villain s grunts are a key part of
superhero fiction. Another example of genres is science fictionwhich is chosen due to its wide
prevalence in literature. Writers of this genre typically speculate on more advanced technology such
as space travel and artificial intelligence wielded by either humans or some other sentient species
introduced by the writers. While this... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Genres are fluid: they often respond to changes within the world. For example, Joseph Heller s
satirical novel Catch 22 became popular as it reflected the growing opposition towards the
Vietnam War in the 1960s through its criticism of the military complex (BBC News, 2012).
Because genres are fluid, they frequently change to reflect the shifting expectations of readers or
viewers. The superhero genre, for instance, evolved from simple stories involving the triumph of
good over evil in its beginning to stories incorporating darker and grittier themes today. New
genres also form to meet the developing needs of consumers. For instance, satire developed as a
means to draw attention to faults within society and criticize established groups such as

Character Analysis Of Ravana
Ravana Anand Neelakantan portrays Ravana as a loving father, an inspiring leader and a caring
brother. Ravana ceaselessly fights for the much deserved freedom and glory for the Asura race
and his motherland. He overthrows the yoke of Deva ruling and carves out a big part of land from
under the reign of the Deva, he leads the Asuras to a better future. Ravana looks upon the great God
Indra with contempt. Through Ravana s eyes, one can see Indra as ruthless and savage . Indra laid
waste to Asuratowns and set fire to beautiful villages. He captured cities, butchered all living
things and blazed huge funeral pyres. Anand brings in a contradiction in viewpoints here. When the

Music Piracy And Piracy
Introduction In today s world of conflict and international tension, music can aid to bring people
together. This generation enjoys access to extensive communication with people around the
world, through calls, text messages, and social media. Social media especially plays a vital role
in bringing people from all parts of the world together over common interests and beliefs. Music is
playing a major role in the unity of people through social media (Lachman, 2014). Music is often
shared through Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and Tumblr, allowing thousands of people to access
new and old music alike. This music acts as a commonality between people in different parts of the
world. Piracy Issues While the mutual positive relationships amid... Show more content on

While they put their music up on YouTube in order to gain recognition, they risk losing money
due to loose piracy laws. For the artists, this means that while their music may be popular, they
aren t getting the benefits that should be receiving from the songs they release. Copyright Issues
Another problem that is arising with the growing access to the Internet is the ability for people
to make mashups and remixes of existing music. A mashup is the blending of multiple songs to
create a new unique track. A remix is a rearrangement of a song with original sounds and
melodies added to it. Many free softwares are available to the general public that allows them to
use already existing music to create new tracks (Potter, 2012). Although this may seem legal
because the new tracks are original, it s still considered copyright. Unless the original artist of
the song gives permission for someone to use their track in a mashup or remix, it is illegal to
reproduce the music in any way. Unfortunately, due to the number of people who create mashups
and remixes of their own, and the difficulty of reaching an artist to gain permission, most people
do not attempt it at all. Mashups shared by mashup artists through social media as a form of
creative expression, similar to art and writing. Like original art and writing, mashups play a role in
global communication. Mashups get spread around social media, allowing people from all over the

The Federal Reserve System
The Federal Reserve is a federal system enacted to help balance the monetary system of America.
Overall, the system is meant to encourage economic growth. However, there are some flaws of the
system that result in economic chaos, such as stealing and inflation. It s vital to understand the
biblical principles that are overstepped by the Federal Reserve to determine if it is a system that
aids Christian practices. Thus, one can observe the important role that the system plays, but also the
problems that its flaws can create by overstepping Christian principles.
The Federal Reserve system was created to help maintain a balance for the monetary system in
America. Not only does it help regulate the flow of currency, but it also oversees banks and
therefore influences Americans on a personal level with their finances. Evidently, the system is
deeply webbed into the federal system and everyday American life that it is now the system that is
largely used help to keep order to the economy. While the system has been beneficial, it s also had

controls many important aspects of a stable country and economy. However, this doesn t necessarily

The History of Sex Workers
Sex Workers
There are many different ideas as to what a sex worker is. A sex worker is someone who uses
sexual acts in return for money, services, or products. The person benefiting on behalf of the sex
worker can be the actual sex worker or someone referred to as a pimp. Throughout history, people
around the world have had different views of sexuality. Sex work is an area of sexuality that has
been around for centuries. There are many different areas of sex work. There are such things as
prostitution, pornography, sex tourism, and the sex trade. Sex workers are present in almost every
country.

female. Sex was not allowed outside of marriage. It ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This attracted many Western pedophiles. The supply of customers caused pimps to acquire
children through sale and through kidnapping to meet their demand. Widespread rural poverty
and the low socioeconomic status of children caused the influx of a large supply of rural
children that could be acquired relatively cheap. To prevent the interference of the government
Thai officials were bribed or in some cases offered a portion of the profits of the trade (Jubilee,
4.) In the past decade the media, most specifically the travel industry, has developed a taste for
women with girly qualities. The result of this trend is a steadily increasing demand for underage
prostitutes as well as the continual decline in the desired age for child prostitutes. Due to these
unfortunate circumstances the child sex trade has steadily grown and it is estimated that every year
one million children are enter the sex trade (World Congress, overview, 2.)
Sex workers can come from a variety of backgrounds. According to a table about China from an
article called HIV/AIDS Risk Among Brothel Based Female Sex Workers in China: Assessing the
Terms, Content, and Knowledge of Sex Work, the women s economic backgrounds affect what role
they have in the sex industry. The table explains what income they receive, the demographics, and
the organization of work and employment status (Huang, 696.)
In China, there are at least seven different types of female sex work. Second wives are self

happening now with Government spending on trying to improve flood protection from climate

commissioned research on how sea level rise can affect their communities, while North Carolina
banned the studies from informing coastal policies in 2012. There isn t an agreement in the U.S.

Governor Chris Christie believes that climate change is a problem, but he doesn t think that
climate change affected the damage done by Hurricane Sandy (Haddon 1). This was a short article

of changes done to reduce the effects of climate change since Hurricane Sandy.

Social Movement Theory Framing, Political Opportunities,...
Do the three core concepts of social movement theory framing, political opportunities, and
mobilizing structures provide an adequate account of the emergence of social movements?
Social movements have been a fundamental part of civilization s freedom. It is the bridge that
takes social grievances to the polity. Without this connection, people would not be able to express
their concerns freely. A social movementis much more than just spontaneous uprisings with no
organization; they are a complex organization that require detailed analysis to understand where
they come from. In this sense, I would be devoting my time to analyze the different factors that
cause the rise and development of social movements. I will consider a social movement as
organized yet informal social entities that are engaged in extra institutional conflict that is oriented
towards a goal. These goals can be either aimed at a specific and narrow policy or be more broadly
aimed at cultural change (Christiansen, 1, 2009). Consequently, it would be naГЇve to propose any
explanation that relies solely on a single factor as the reason for the emergence of a social
movement. Any meaningful analysis here has to happen through the understanding of multiple
factors (both endogenous and exogenous), as well as their interaction, which collectively culminate
in any given type of social movement. More importantly, it is key to understand that every social
movement is the product of the previously mentioned

reactivity, storage, disposal, protective equipment, and spill handling procedures. This information
provided in one s specific place for lab workers and users means that work in the lab can be
carried out safely as they are able to access any details they need about equipment, machines and
chemicals etc.
MSDS (which stands for: Material Safety Data Sheet) is a document that contains information on
potential hazards (e.g. health, fire hazards, reactivity and environmental), how to work safely with
a chemical product and the use, storage, handling and emergency procedures all related to the
hazards of a material. MSDS documents contains more information about materials than a label
would and they are prepared by the supplier/manufacturer of the material. It helps to maintain the
safe working practices as it outlines the hazards of products, how to use products safely, what to
expect if recommendations are not followed, what to do if accidents occur, how to recognize
symptoms of overexposure, and what to do if such incidents occur and it is an essential starting
point for the development of a complete health and safety program.
Good laboratory practice involves communication with various organisations that assess labs by
embodying a set of principles which provide a framework for lab studies to be planned,

Refugee Challenges
There are many challenges that refugees face fleeing home, finding home, and moving to a new
country altogether. Some refugees have been abused in their own country, and some have been
persecuted. Others have lost their country because of war. Refugees have no choice but to flee and
find home and this turns them inside out and back again. In Inside out and back and again Ha
experienced many of the challenges that refugees face. Some of the challenges that she faced were
adapting to a new life in the US, making friends, and finding home, these challenges that Ha faced
also reflect on the universal refugeeexperience.
People from all over the world face traumatizing experiences that cause them to leave their home
countries. War, famine, natural disasters, persecution, and discrimination are just a few of the
reasons people flee. For example, in the excerpt from Children of War, the author states, the war
in the Balkans has caused grievous suffering for millions of people (Brice). Inside Out and Back
Again represents that universal experience as well when Ha states, people run and scream
Communists! (Lai 68) which refers to how the war has led the Communists to take over Ha s
home of Saigon. Clearly Ha is experiencing what refugees all over the world experience when they
have to flee their home countries because of war.
All refugees face many challenges when fleeing home. Some challenges that they have to face are

Silica mines the sand looks and feels like baking flour. They also have kaolin which is a white
type of clay. They try to stay away from working with the kaolin because it s sticky and hard to
deal with. They also do very little frac mining. The frac mining process has several steps. Before
frac mining can began all vegetation must be removed from the area. Then to reach the target
sandstone, all unwanted rock layers has to be removed. Thirdly the top of the sandstone has to
be exposed and since frac sand is cemented together explosive charges has to be placed inside
holes drilled near the edge of the mine so the sandstone can break into small pieces. Then loaders
are driven in to scoop up sandstones from near the wall of the mine pit. After the loaders scoop
up the sandstones they send the sandstones to a crusher which breaks down the large chunks into
individual sand grains. Sand grains are then washed to remove any unwanted particles. Once it
has been washed, it is stockpiled for drying, sorting, and the final shipment. After the final
shipment mine reclamation is started which is when the mined pit is filled back up with rocks
and other materials that were not used from the sandstones and the new surface eventually be
replanted. Regular sand mining at the U.S. silica is similar to this process except that there is no
need for the explosives process because the sand is already soft and comes apart

Tower Of Babel
Art Essay
As I walked around the Grohmann Museum s Man at Work collection, I appreciated looking at the
great variety of all of man s work throughout time, and I analyzed the evolution of technology
throughout history. I thought the whole collection depicting man at work throughout history was
very interesting and informative. I saw quite a few paintings which interested me and that I could
write about.
The painting I choose to write about is Tower of Babel by Gillis van Vlackenborch. I choose this
painting because, as I walked around the Grohmann Museum and looked at all the paintings, the
Tower of Babel caught my eye by being a very large, detailed, and involved painting. The painting

If one were to be alive during the time of the building of the Tower of Babel, this painting may
very well be what it could have looked like to someone. The painting is extremely detailed and
each time you look at it, you can notice some new details. This painting depicts lots of people
working hard to finish building the Tower of Babel. You can see everyone in the painting
working extremely hard except the small group of people in the far right corner. In the right
corner of the painting there appears to be an architect or engineer holding a scroll with a picture
of the tower on it. The guy next to him might be someone important because he is wearing some
type of fancy hat and he is the only one in in the whole painting who is overweight. The main
focus of the painting is obviously the Tower of Babel. The tower is very large and in the middle
of the painting so when you look at it your attention is immediately drawn to the tower. The
painting doesn t have a great variety of color in it. Most of the colors are red or brown. The
whole painting is pretty dark except the sun trying to peak through the clouds in the upper right
hand corner of the painting. There seems to be a slightly inclined road the spirals up to the top of
the tower. My best guess for them building the tower with this inclined spiral road is for the easy
transportation of building supplies and materials to the top of the

Vengeance And Vengeance In Beowulf
V is for Vengeance
Anglo Saxon culture consisted of receiving fame, glory, and wealth through acts of vengeance and
courage. Beowulf portrays these parts in great detail and shows how destabilizing it can be.
Through acts of vengeance, a never ending war occurs.
It is said in Beowulf that old tongues poke and prod youngsters to wars with incendiary
comments like, That sword, that previous old blade over there, I think you know it friend. Your
father carried it, fought with it the time he could swing a sword; The Danes killed him and many
more of our men and stripped the dead bodies; The brave, bold Danes! (Beowulf pg. 86]. These

In this quote, Beowulf believes that it would be cowardly to fight Grendel with a sword and that
facing him with only his hands is the only way to do it right. The word struggle really shows
how an Anglo Saxon life must be lived. In Anglo Saxon culture, you had to show signs of
struggle for everything you owned or else it would seem as though it were illegitimate and
others would look down upon you if items or positions were just given to you. Those who take
vengeance with courage are thought deserving of the wealth they get from those of high social
status according to Anglo Saxon culture. A courageous warrior can earn quite a lot and you can
see this after the defeat of Grendel and Hrothgar states And take, in return, whatever you may
want from whatever I own. Warriors deserving far less have been granted as much, given gifts
and honored, though they fought no enemy like yours. Glory is now yours forever and ever; your
courage has earned it, and your strength ( Beowulf pg,43]. Hrothgar is telling Beowulf that
anything he has is his. Beowulf showed great strength and courage when fighting Grendel and
because of that, Hrothgar believes that the glory Beowulf has earned is now unassailable.
Hrothgar uses words like courage and strength to show real admiration for Beowulf. He knows that
these are the words that warriors like to hear and what the Anglo Saxons revere

Stress Relief Techniques for College Students
Stress Relief Students in college have many reasons to stress. There are classes to plan for,
homework to do, tests to take, money to earn, and familial pressure to boot. Researchers have
determined the top ten most common hassles associated with attending college. These include:
fear about the future, lack of sleep, wasting time, smoking and its health effects from either first
or second hand smoke, their physical appearance, the feeling that they have too much to do,
misplacing or losing important materials or personal property, not having enough time for the
things they must do, concerns about the high standards they set for themselves or that parents
or the school sets for them, and the feeling of loneliness and homesickness that accompanies
college enrollment (Huffman 2012, page 97). No one can get through college without
experience stressful moments. The trick is to learn how to handle this stress and in what ways
the pressure can be relieved. One of the best ways to reduce stress is to exercise. Working out by
doing activities such as running outdoors, boxing and sparring, aerobics, swimming, and
bicycling have been proven to have extremely positive effects on a person s mental state and
their ability to handle stress. Stress is the feeling of intense pressure which people feel when they
are depended upon to perform actions which overwhelm them. It is defined as a response to a
demand that is placed upon you (Managing 2013). People s responses to stress can be

Similarities Between La Belle Dame Sans Merci And Annabel Lee
Love in Poe s Annabel Lee and Keats s La Belle Dame sans Merci
Poe s Annabel Lee and Keats s La Belle Dame sans Merci depict the destructive effects that women
exercise upon men. In both poems, women, by death and deception, harm their adoring lovers. In
Annabel Lee, Annabel dies and leaves the speaker in isolation; in La Belle Dame Sans Merci, the
fairy, La Belle Dame, captures the speaker s heart, and then deserts him. The common theme of
both poems, that love generates harmful effects, is a reflection of both poets upsetting and harmful
childhood experiences.
Poetry, Keats purports, comes from the ferment of an unhappy childhood working through a noble
imagination (Keats 16). The lesson of [Keat s] ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He creates an aroma of sex in pacing steed, which might be an innocent horse ride, but is
possibly a sexual metaphor (the speaker being the steed.) The repetition of wild eyes is a sexual
euphemism, furthering the sexual nature of love expressed within the poem. Even the knight s
last memory of the fairy is of a sexual nature; the knight receives kisses four, afterwards the fairy
lulls him to sleep. Keats s love is relatively more tenuous than Poe s, because the fairy s love is
unpredictable, and bizarre ( In language strange she said / I love thee true ). This love is also
destructive, as warned by the dead men in the last stanza with their horrid warning that La Belle
Dame/ Thee hath in thrall! Poe and Keats employ the their speakers painful experiences with love
as examples of love s ruinous consequences.
La Belle Dame sans Merci and Annabel Lee develop their characters with attention to details, so that
the impact of the characters experiences are more intense and vivid.. In Annabel Lee, the speaker
calls Annabel a maiden, starting the poem with virtuous connotations. The reader learns that
Annabel is from high birth through reference to her as a highborn kinsmen, and her grave as a
sepulchre. Annabel s wealthy birthright generates the

The Fundamentals of Merchandising
The Principles of Merchandising
The past decade has witnessed sea change in the world of retail, of which increasing competition is
just one aspect. New and emerging technologies and customers fragmentation has made it even
more difficult for retailers to retain consumers who are loyal to their stores. Walters and Hanharan
have identified four key elements of the strategic direction that are retailer may take, they are: *
Merchandise strategy; * Communications strategy; * Customer service strategy; and * Format and
environment strategy.
Among all the elements of retail strategy, that of merchandising is becoming increasingly
important, eventually determining the loyalty that a customer may have for a retail store. Over ...

The structure of the merchandising department largely depends on the organizational structure
adopted by that particular retail organization. Many organizations may also have a position known
as a Purchase Agent. Purchase Agent and Buyers commonly focus on routine purchasing tasks,
often specializing in a commodity or a group of related commodities, such as steel, cotton, grains,
fabricated metal products, or petroleum products. Purchase Agents usually track market conditions,
price trends, or futures markets.
The Merchandiser, on the other hand, is responsible for particular lines of merchandise. For
example, in a departmental store, there may be merchandisers for menswear, women swear,
children s wear, etc. The basic duties of the merchandiser can be divided into four areas: planning,
directing, coordinating and controlling as follows: 1. Planning. Though merchandisers may not be
directly involved in the actual purchase of merchandise, they formulate the policies for areas in
which they are responsible. These include forecasting sales for the forthcoming budget period,
which further involves estimating consumer demand and the impact of changes in the retail
environment. These sales forecasts are then translated into budgets to help the buyers to work
within the financial guidelines. 2. Directing. Guiding and training buyers as and when the need
arises is also a function of the merchandiser. Many a times, buyers

Why Psychopaths Are Serial Killers
Imagine being free of the mental chains called a conscience. Unpleasant feelings such as guilt or
regret would no longer be able to be felt. Theoretically, this would sound preferable, but in
actuality a conscience is what makes us truly human, and without it we would not have any
compassion or empathy for others. This is why conscienceless people, psychopaths, are such a
threat to society; they care only for themselves and will not hesitate to harm anyone if it means
they achieve a certain goal. It is a proven fact that, much like how all squares are rectangles but
not all rectangles are squares, all serial killers are psychopaths but not all psychopaths are serial
killers. Therefore, I decided that the book best suited for me to learn... Show more content on

Serial killers unavailability of remorse or guilt is linked with their lack of a conscience that gives
them the remarkable ability to rationalize their behavior and to shrug off personal responsibility
for actions that cause shock and disappointment to family, friends, or associates (42). Due to the
absence of that little voice present in most people s minds, serial killers are like robots in view of
the fact that they are unemotional and indifferent about the lives of others. They can, and do,
ruthlessly slay people just as easily and with no feeling as I can crunch an irritating bug beneath my

Never On A Sunday, By Companies Like Mccoy s Building...
Never on a Sunday is a case study that discusses the philosophy carried out by companies like
McCoy s Building Supply and Chick Fil A. Both of these organizations are perfect examples of
Organizational or Corporate culture defined as a system of shared actions, values, and beliefs that
develop within an organization that guides the behavior of its members (Schermerhom, Osborn,
Uhl bien, Hunt, 2012, p. 348). At McCoy s for example Managers are asked to concentrate on
service related issues Managers focus more on the items in store and customer service and the
majority of their administrative workload is handled through headquarters (Schermerhom, Osborn,
Uhl bien, Hunt, 2012, p. 353). Working as a manager myself that really sounds like a great method
of management. There are many times where my boss and the rest of the management team where I
work struggles. Keeping up with all the administrative duties and the store at the same time can be
really trying and is a never ending workload. This makes neither one of them get the attention they
require and more often than not we find ourselves trying to do just enough administrative work and
just enough floor work to get through the day. Additionally, the management teams meet regularly
to discuss products and other important aspects that impact the stores. Sometimes in my line of
work we wish that we had the opportunity to meet and discuss new ideas and products that could
improve our stores.

Socrates Definition Of Justice Essay
Justice
What is justice? This is a question that men have struggled with answering for centuries. Justice
should be defined for the sake of all people, especially by rulers who attempt to make fair laws so
that their society functions in an orderly fashion. In Book 1 of The Republic, Plato attempts to
define exactly what justice is. To help determine this definition, he speaks through the philosopher
protagonist of Socrates. Justice is first brought up in The Republic during Socrates trip to Piraeus.
While traveling Socrates ends up gathering with his interlocutors and together, they talk about
justice and how one would define it. Socrates debates with the men about the definition of justice
and is presented with a definition of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Republic presents two very different views of justice as argued by two skilled thinkers. The
beginning of the discussion starts off with Thrasymachus explaining what exactly he believes
justice is; justice is nothing other than the advantage of the stronger. (338c) Although
Thrasymachus definition is clear, Socrates attempts to spite him by using a wild comparison, by
saying If Polydamamas, the pancratiast, is stronger than we are and beef is advantageous for his
body, then this food is also advantageous and just for us who are weaker than he is. (338c) This
statement from Socrates disgusts Thrasymachus because Thrasymachus was simply referring to
stronger in the sense of being a ruler, not strong in the sense of being physically larger. To counter
Socrates, Thrasymachus explains how different societies are ruled throughout the world whether it
be tyrannically, democratically, or otherwise, and how the rulers, those who are strongest, are the
ones who make the laws and they do so to their advantage. Thrasymachus establishes this by saying
how, A democracysets down democratic laws; a tyranny, tyrannic laws; and the others do the
same. (338e) It is clear from this line of reasoning that Thrasymachus has a solid position that
justice is, rightly or wrongly, the enforcement of the rule of law as dictated by the strong leaders
that make the law.
Socrates attempts to disprove Thrasymachus definition of

Metaphors In Dante s Inferno
Dante Alighieri was one of the most inspiring Italian poets in the middle ages. One of his greatest
writings is about the afterlife, from the depths of Hell in his own made Inferno, into the mountains
of Purgatory and in the ever lasting spirits of Heaven called the Paradiso. But my main focus on
this essay is what in Dante s life inspired him to write like he did, particularly his Inferno. Questions
and history may lead us to believe that was it was his love, war or political view that shaped him
as an artist. There is a gap in his history with some unknowns for the simplest things like what was
his birth date. But some metaphors from his Divine Comedymay answer these questions.
Even today, Dante is inspiring artists with his writings and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Florence at this time being a loathed, despised, derogated community with corruption and discard,
Dante Alighieri lived most of his days working on his writings that will last hundreds of years.
Church versus independence of the city states gave Dante the motivation to get involved of
becoming a member of political governing body. In this time Florence has split into two parties,
Guelphs who support the pope and Ghibellines that support the Roman Emperor with the need of
more freedom. Dante was part of the White Guelphs and fought in war of his cause but with
seeing life and death in the horrific battle of war, this may have lead to vision of his own Hell.
Dante was exiled from the city by Black Guelphs or else he would be burned to the stake in result
of his family having to split apart leaving behind his wife Gemma Donati and his four children.
Dante spent 20 years drifting from city to city thinking about his long lost love Beatrice who was

Factors Influencing Consumer Behaviour towards Store Brands
In the article Factor influencing consumer behaviour towards store brands: Evidence for the French
market , Mbaye Fall Diallo, Jean Louis Chandon, GeВґrard Cliquet, Jean Philippe (2013), the main
aims for this research is to examine the factors of store brands purchase behaviour on consumer,
image factors and store familiarity.
The French market has been chosen in this research because it is convenience and the fast
developing of store brands itself. Several factors that motivates consumer to purchase store brands
(SB) product are socio demographic factors, which is including gender, age, household income and
the number of children in the household. According to Burton et al (1998) and Martinez and
Montaner (2008), research that showed family capacity and income has become a strong element of
store brand purchase behaviour. Economic factors are in touch to the economic cycle whilst
psychographic factors consist of value consciousness, self smart shopper perceptions and so forth.
Based on chapter one I learned in class, the marketing concept were divided into four concepts
which are consumer research, segmentation, market targeting and positioning. The authors goes on
with research using structural equation modelling and finalize ANOVA and MANOVA analysis to
proof the outcome of store familiarity on store brands purchase behaviour.
The process of dividing the market into subsets of consumer needs and characteristics is called
segmentation. These processes are based on

Poverty In America Research Paper
Poverty is a very big problem happening around the world, especially in America. America is
known for being successful, however, the difference between the rich and poor is very big. A
great example will be a recession that happened in America in 2007 until 2009. These people
living in poverty suffer getting jobs, supporting their family with the lack of money they earn and

A recession, the definition by Cambridge dictionary, is a period when the economy of a country is
not successful and conditions for business is bad. A massive amount of Americans lost wealth
during the recession that happened in 2007 2009. According to Scholars Strategy Network, to this

Biology Beetroot Lab Report
Investigating Effects of duration of heating on permeability of beetroot cell membrane
Introduction: Cell membranes contain many different types of molecules which have different
roles in the overall structure of the membrane. Phospholipids form a bilayer, which is the basic
structure of the membrane. Their non polar tails form a barrier to most water soluble substances.
Membrane proteins serves as channels for transport of metabolites, some act as enzymes or carriers,
while some are receptors. Lastly carbohydrate molecules of the membrane are relatively short chain
polysaccharides, which has multiple functions, for example, cell cell recognition and acting as
receptor sites for chemical signals.
The plasma membrane is a permeable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus it forms holes, disrupting the membrane of the beetroot core which essentially prevents the
betacyanin pigment from leaving the cell. Also, when exposed under heat, the cholesterol,
glycolipids and phospholipids expand, putting pressure on the membrane from inside. The lipid part
of the membrane will become liquid, making it open to leakage. The proteins in the membrane will
denature, increasing the permeability in the surface. The combination of vibrating molecules and a
denaturing membrane would disrupt the organized structure of the membrane. And eventually with
a disrupted membrane, betacyanin pigment in the innermost compartment will leak out.
When the beetroot sample is heated for a longer period of time, it is exposed to the vigorous and
frequent vibrating molecules for a longer duration. This further disrupts the cell membranes making
them more fragile, thus more pigment will leak out into the external solution. With more leakage of
the betacyanin pigment, the % transmittance should be lower, indicating that the % of light that is
able to pass through the beetroot solution should be less as duration heated increases.

Based on previous knowledge, research and the above prediction, I would expect to get results
similar to:
The data collected of % transmittance can then be used as an indication of changes in membrane

The one we have been is bigger than another one, and it is brighter.
The service process for the Starbucks coffee shop has several steps. First step is the customers
get in to the coffee shop; second step is customers go to the encounter or queue up in front of the
encounter; third step is the staff of coffee shop greet with customers; forth step is the staff takes
order from customers and ask them would you like anything else? ; fifth step is the staff asks the
customers name and write on the cups; sixth step is customers pay the bill; seventh step is
customers go to the another encounter to waiting the drinks; eighth step is the staff calls the
customers name; ninth step is customers crap the drinks; finally, the staff says goodbye and have
nice day to customers. When customers order the drinks, they have to join a queue in front of
encounter. This likes a policy in the every coffee shop.
They also have some supplementary services, such as customers can take away the drinks, or the
store provides some chairs and tables for customers can have drink inside the store.
We also discussed about the human resource management for the Starbucks coffee shop. There
are five people in the store, one staff takes order and check the bills, two staffs make the drinks,
one staff cleans the cups or machines, and the last one is manager, he monitors the other
employees work and when the peak hours, he will help them to take order or make drinks.

Despite this, there is no specific punishment for homosexuality; instead, the decision is left to the

The Importance Of The First And Second Language Acquisition
First and second language acquisition have been a topic of interest in linguistics for decades.
Researchers have been approaching these topics from many points of view, angles, and models
(Gass, 2013). Regarding second language acquisition, and especially English as a second
language, the most researched topics include the effects of the Critical Period on second language
learners, age of acquisition, age of onset, and individual differences (i.e. L1, motivation, aptitude)
(Gass, 2013). Even though it is possible to find a wide variety of research on L2 acquisition,
researchers are still debating on which elements affect learners more. Furthermore, while there is
plenty of research on gender differences in the field of first language acquisition, there seems to be
a lack of studies on said topic in regards to learning a second language. For said reason this
research paper will focus on gender and first language influences on English as a second language
acquisition, with the goal to comprehend whether one, both or neither of those factors contributes or
hinders L2 acquisition and why. Furthermore, the current research paper is a follow up of
Chiamenti (2016).

They argued that the use of written agreement set out task, boundaries, limitations and any future

limitation, set out clear boundaries and promotes mutual responsibilities. Similarly, Healy (2012)
argues that social worker must be respectful, honest and transparent when working with a family.
The second stage of the negotiation was to take the draft copy of the agreement letter to show my
lecturer at the University for Approval. After the approval the agreement letter. The approved letter
of agreement was now signed by myself, preschool manager and the child s parent. This agreement
shows that the preschool and parent of the child has granted me their consent to observe this child.
The parents and their child were not coerced into participating in this observation to ensure
voluntary participation and the parents and the child were free to change their mind at any stage of
the observation.
Reflection of the process of negotiation.
Social workers need to develop a good observation skill for them to be able to do their work
effectively because communication is one of the key tool which social work use (BASW, 2014,
HCPC, 2016 and Healy, 2012). Therefore, having good observation skills is relevant in social
work. Healy (2012) suggested that communication could be verbal and non verbal methods of

deterrent. After presenting those three anti Death Penalty arguments, the pro Death Penalty
responses will be examined. Anti Death Penalty Arguments One argument against the Death
Penalty is that innocent people are wrongfully convicted and sentenced to death. While the
Innocence Project, associated with the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, was not established to
abolish the Death Penalty, many of its findings support the innocent convict argument. The
Innocence Project maintains that people have been wrongfully convicted due to: eyewitness
misidentification; invalidated or improper forensics; false confessions/admissions; forensic science
misconduct; government misconduct; informants; and bad

The Jury Of A Jury
Jury Paper The concept of juries dates back to the eighth century. Instead of it being an impartial
body of unbiased people, juries interrogated prisoners. It was not until the fourteenth century that
juries would start to become what we know them today. About three million people are called to
serve juryduty every year in the United States. On average only 1.2 million actually serve their
request according to the American Bar Association. A jury is picked from a jury pool. The jury
pool is made up of around sixty people. These sixty people are questioned and screened by both
lawyers to weed out any that are to bias toward the subject of the case. The first part of jury is
picking one person to speak for everyone, they are known as the... Show more content on

Juries in other countries are not quite like ours. In the United Kingdom they do not have a grand
jury. If the judge or police feels that the crime is serious enough it is sent straight to a jury trial.
Other countries such as Canada, Australia, and New Zealand have started to adopt the concept
as well. Other than this a jury trial is set up relatively the same as they are in the United States.
Both sides are able to present evidence to a jury and the jury discusses and comes up with a
verdict. A former New York judge, Sol Wathtler, once said A district attorney could get a grand
jury to indict a ham sandwich. (Hans, 2008). This is because a prosecution is able to get a jury
to believe anything due to they are able to present evidence such as hearsay and illegally
obtained evidence that wouldn t be used in a jury trial. The defense is not allowed to be in the
court when a grand jury is in session, that is the reason the prosecution is able to present that
evidence. This is one major reason why many countries stopped showing cases in a grand jury. In
the United States .027 percent of trial by juries are tried unfairly. That gives our justice system a
99.973 percent success rate according to researchers from National Geographic (Hughes, 2014). In a
case known as the Affluenza Teen; teenager Ethan Couch

transport of crude oil by rail will require updated regulations to ensure the safety of lives and
property, a topic that will likely be a key issue in the coming months due to pending legislative
and regulatory activity. In 2013, railroads originated more than 400,000 carloads of crude oil, or
about 800,000 barrels per day, which represents a 42 fold increase from 2008. This trend is
expected to continue as domestic production of shale oil grows, since rail offers a convenient
method of transportation to refineries from these newer production sites that are not well served by
existing pipeline infrastructure. Accompanying this growth is an increasing number of incidents
and amount of property damage, setting records the past three years. Many of the laws and
regulations regarding the shipment of crude oil were created before this rapid increase, and are
inadequate for the unforeseen boom in transporting oil by rail. This document provides an overview
of major policy issues and recommendations on this topic gathered from

Response For Young Goodman Brown
Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne can be interpreted in one of two ways. Some
people believe it was all just one big bad dream, others believe it actually happened. Either way
you interpret it can be right, there isn t a right or wrong answer, you just have to support your
answers. I believe that it was all a dream, and Young Goodman Brownwoke up with a completely
corrupt mind that cost him his life. This is because Goodman Brown s good friends never even
acknowledged him, his wife who wanted him to stay home was out there, and everything was
normal when he woke up.
Young Goodman Brown was only dreaming the whole time. I honestly believe that the whole
entire story was a dream all up until the part where he woke up and went into the town. Although,
when he woke up, his life was already ruined and his mind was already 100% corrupt. Young
Goodman Brown thought that everyone was devil worshippers because he saw them out at the

This is part of the reason why I think it was just a dream. You would think if people he knew, and
was good friends with were in the forest with him, they would at least acknowledge him. In the
story, it says that Goodman saw Goody Cloyse and he was so surprised about her being out there.
That is when everybody else started showing up and he thought it was more than a dream.
The part that leads me to believe that is was a dream even more, is that his wife was so upset
that he was leaving the house to go out into the forest. She basically begged him to stay but he
was too stubborn and decided to go after thinking about it long and hard. His wife, Faith, was
wearing a little pink ribbon in her hair right before he left for the woods. After he saw Goody
Cloyse, and then seeing the other towns members, Goodman Brown spots a little pink ribbon laying
on the ground, the same one that Faith was wearing before he

How To Read In Elementary School
In elementary school the one subject I always would struggle with was spelling. At the end of
every week we would have a spelling test based on a set of words that came from a vocabulary
or spelling workbook. On Mondays at the beginning of class we would receive the previous
week s test and examine the words for the test that week. I would always study and would try a
million different methods, even coming up with my own unique methods to study. No matter
what process I used my grade would always end up being poor. My mom would always be on me
about doing better on the test but nothing would come about from that. So, my mom decided to
get involved and attempt to raise my grades. At first she tried studying with me. She would go
over the words with me and use the methods I had previously used myself. After studying with
my mom, I would always feel more confident but the grades I would receive were still subpar. It
was frustrating. For some reason, it was just a task for me to spell. I would make up fake dieses
with my best friend Becca like spellyosis, the inability to spell. We would have to participate in the
class spellingbee and I would... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Evaluation Of An E File System
Painters Case Study This is a thought provoking case study which, like most of the effort in
Sociotechnical Theory, is concentrated on a certain type of production system , in this case an E
File system. Socio Technical Theory is an intellectual model that helps us recognize patterns in the
way technology is used. How well businesses can utilize this model can make or break the success
or failure of an organization as they change the way they do business or introduce new technology
to their workforce. In looking at the case study by Painter B he mentions the renovation of a paper
method to an electronic E file system. Reasons standing behind these changes were noted;
Claims from injured
Delayed payment on claims
Rising costs of disability benefits. According to Painter (NA), The Electronic Claim File system
was customized for the assertion of reimbursement and compensation division of an insurance
conglomerate, Workers Compensation Board (p.2). The firm had huge client database and hence
the main task was to collect data, weigh evidence, and relate specified information in making
difficult decisions about workers injury compensation entitlements in an assortment of businesses.
Painter, the author of this study executed a sequence of before and after evaluations and
comprehensive consultations, approved and developed by labor and executives, to aid them closely
with the effects of E File transition on the employees, during the periods of pilot testing

Explain Why the Hispanic Vote Is Becoming More Important...
Explain why the Hispanic vote is becoming more important in US elections (10 marks)
Hispanics are a growing group in the USA in terms of politics, this can be seen through
demographics, according to the 2000 census, they did form 12% of the population, but by the
2010 census this figure has increased over 16% (51 million people) this was due to immigration
and birth rates, therefore over the years they have become more influential as they are now a larger
proportion or the electorate.
Furthermore, because they are a young group and a significant proportion are not yet of voting age,
with one quarter of Hispanics being under 18, Their full political importance is yet to show as they
have not yet acquired the right to vote, which is one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This could be due to George D. Bush though, as in the 2000 he made a significant effort to pitch for
the Hispanic vote, with the help of him speaking fluent Spanish. However, in 2012 these figures
went down to 27%. With 71% of the Hispanic population supporting Obama and the Democratic
beliefs such as rights for ethnic minorities, welfare and supporters of the dream act allowing for
naturalisation. There was also evidence of the alienation of this group however, by Romney in
2012, whose reference to self deportation and anti immigration views in the campaign is thought to
have affected his chances of winning in several states and for some future Republicans in their
campaigns. But, Hispanics did help push Republicans to victory in a few 2014 races, as when Cory
Gardner ousted Colorado Senator.
When looking at political campaigns in recent years there has been increasing evidence in the
parties campaigns for the support of this racial group as they are being targeted in the campaigns
in a strategic manner, by campaigning in Spanish or supporting citizenship, or heavy focus on
Hispanic candidates from the parties for examples the Republican focus was on candidates such as
Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz.
It is true that the Hispanic population, at 53 million, is still much smaller than the non Hispanic
population, at around 260 million. But it s also a population that represents a massive opportunity
for either party. In

Illegal Immigration Reform
The various policies and issues with immigration and family.
Post the Civil Rights movements in the United States it is visible the upswing in wars; it went
form war to poverty, to war to drug, to war to terrorist. Immigration law is very complex, and as
result there is much confusion as to how immigration law works in reality. Most people get confused
thinking that because United States is a country built of Immigrants however immigrants have
experienced discriminatory process, for example: the Chinese exclusion Act. In which at certain
point America wanted immigrants in the country and then suddenly the government does not what
them anymore and expulse them of their soil.
The Immigration and Naturalization Act is basically the body of law ... Show more content on

The first, Illegal Immigration Reform Responsibility Act passed in 1996 by president Bill
Clinton, which covers many aspects of immigration, and the responsibilities placed upon those
enforcing the law as well as immigrants. Basically, this act addresses border patrol and its
process. The anti terrorist and the effective terrorist act became a huge step forward to continue
the fight against terrorism. However, this law endangers democracy by creating an authoritarian
style of government. Moreover, the Patriots act signed by president W. Bush in 2001, this act is
an antiterrorist law enacted by congress as a response to the 911, terrorist attack. These policies
are very different from previous policies because they impact families drastically. In other words,
those policies contribute to the destruction of families. There are many ways to get deported for
example: visa expiration, fail to renew for green card, crimes acts, and traffic violations. The
National Origin act passed in 1924 it is a quota system that allows certain amount of people into the
United States. Looking at the dynamics of Immigration in the United States, discriminatory and
prejudice acts has been taking place throughout the history. Ironically, after a group of Immigrants
settle in the country and set their root, the groups that established and were discriminated repeat the
same actions to the groups that come to America after

Manhattan Project History
The Manhattan Project was one, if not the most, secretive projects to take place in the history of
the United States of America. Dating back to World War II, its purpose was to create a bomb
capable of splitting atoms apart. The project was a success and resulted in one of the most
devastating bombs ever to be developed and utilized by mankind. Franklin Delano Roosevelt and
Harry S. Truman, the acting Presidents during the time, faced many factors that were involved in
deciding to proceed with developing and ultimately, dropping the bomb. August, 1939, Albert
Einstein was residing in a Nazi occupied Germany. Upon discovering that Germany was in the
process of researching and developing nuclear based weapons, he partnered with Edward Teller,...

The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock is a Poem Written by...
The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock is a poem written by T. S. Eliot in 1911. Prufrock is a
fictional character with the poets intended audience being fictional as well. In this poem, Eliot
uses multiple forms and meters in this monologue, rhyming couplets that have a song like
quality while other lines are more like a free verse with no regular meter. Along with blank
verse, the poet uses iambic meter which is also used by one of Eliot s favorite authors,
Shakespeare. This poem dramatizes the conflicts of a middle aged man that is wandering the
city, alone and overcautious. He is full of questions, insecurities and the inability to follow
through with his plans. In the form of a dramatic monologue, this modernistic poem is a journey
into the mind of a man who may or may not be in love. J. Alfred Prufrock is a confused lonely
soul that has many unanswered questions and lacks the ability to communicate with anyone but
himself. The poet begins this 132 line monologue with an excerpt from Dante s Inferno. This is a
reference to a character named Guido da Montefeltro in which his soul has been damned to an
eternity in hell. This is a reference to Prufrock who also believes that what he is contemplating
feels like hell on earth. Beginning in stanza 1, Prufrock invites you to join him on a journey. Let us
go then, you and I/When the evening is spread out against the sky. (line 1, 2) Prufrock also
suggests that he might not be comfortable on this walk, Like a

Black Masculinity And The Hip Hop Culture
In the predominantly patriarchal history of the world masculinity and what it means to be a
man have differed from culture to culture. When it comes to African American history and
culture, particularly what it has meant to be a man has no clear set of universal rules or
guidelines. There are a few different sources such as hip hop and television many young black
men across America draw their sense of masculinity from. On the other hand, there are role
models in black communities that many young black men also draw their sense of masculinity
from. With so many different sources to draw a sense of what it means to be a black man in
today s society from what is the true definition of black masculinity. In black media today the hip
hop culture is often referred to when defining what it means to be a black person in society. In
particular the hip hop culture is where many young black men pull both positive and negative
aspects of black masculinity. Many mainstream hip hop songs often create a common misogyny
by objectifying and stereotyping women. An example of this can be heard in the song Nasty Girl
by The Notorious B.I.G. where he states: Conversate. Sex on the first date. I state, You know what
you do to me? She starts off, Well I don t usually. Then I, whip it out, rubber no doubt. Step out,
show me what you all about. Fingers in your mouth, open up your blouse, pull your G string down

means city, so acropolis can be translated as High City and is sometimes referred to as City in the

Civilization as well as the Edinburgh in Scotland are both acropolis . In particular, the Athens
Acropolis is a magnificent citadel. The construction began in 447 BCE. The construction was
overseen by the general Pericles of Athens. The planning alone was an immense procedure.
Hundreds of artisans, metal workers, craftspeople, painters, woodcarvers, and literally thousands
of unskilled laborers worked on the Acropolis. The end goal was to produce a lasting monument in
order to honor the goddess Athena and to declare how glorious the city was. It was especially
important to them because they had just won the war against Persia.... Show more content on

The Parthenon is known as the Temple of Athena Parthenos. Phidiasand his team (Ictinus and

buildings in the Acropolis and was dedicated to honor Athena. The buildings showed a lot of wealth
and power to the Athenian empire. The architecture of the Parthenon shows elements of the clarity.
The Parthenon has a rather uniquely structured building. There is nothing cookie cutter about the
shape. The surfaces are rarely straight and there are hardly any completely horizontal or vertical
lines. Instead of using the straight lines they went with more of a slight curve. Also the floor was
not flat it had a more pronounced curve than people had seen before which made it stand out. The
outer floor was had about a 6 inch difference from the inner floor. The unusual structure of the
Parthenon was not due to poor architect skills it was completely

Compare And Contrast Child Care Practices In Austria Vs Usa
Childcare Practices in Austria vs. USA Nurseries in Austria are tailored specifically for children
up to the age of three. A group of four school employees usually take care of about 15 children. In
Vienna alone, there are 549 nurseries taking care of 5000 children. Once your child reaches the age
of three, they graduate into kindergarten, then they go on to primary schoolat the age of six. In the
nurseries, children are taught physical activities and cultural practices, and they are first
introduced to the English language and computers. In kindergarten, there are twenty five children
per group. After school services are typically found nearby primary schools. There, the staff
concentrates on various activities, including homework (Practical Life in Vienna). Similarities in
childcare practices in Austria vs. the USA include how informal babysitting is. It is done on an
informal basis in both countries (Practical Life in Vienna). They both offer childcare facilities for
working parents, and both are equally expensive at the preschool level and below. Both countries
have nannies for more wealthy families to hire to help take care of their children while they are

The Adaptive Identity
The concern about identity is a major existential question. People recognize different objects by
their sense, and thus consider their appearance, sound, or smell as their identities. In many cases,
even though the physical traits of an object have changed, people still know the object. Therefore,
these physical definitions of objects are not their identities. The connections of these characteristics,
and furthermore of them and their inner self, define the uniqueness of an individual. Since the
massive universe constantly moves toward entropy, the only consistency is change : caterpillars
transform to butterflies, the ugly duckling turns into a beautiful swan, and I have become
unacquainted with my mother language but more comfortable with English. Thus, I am concerned
about my rising ignorance of my own culture and of my true being in the world. But in the poem
Identity by A. R. Ammons, I find relief: identity holds its center within but proceeds to randomness
on the exterior to adjust and adapt. The spiderand the spider webserve as extended metaphors that
represent human beings and their identity. A spider makes web from its body and creates a place
for itself in the world. Because the spider silkis formed in its body, it is a portrayal of the inner
part of an individual; with the silk, spiders weave webs that identify a species (2). Mostly, they
weave a special center (on which they rest), and leave a relatively large circular space around the
beautiful

  • 2. The Modern Prometheus In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein The Modern Prometheus, a term coined by Mary Shelly in her novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. A modern Prometheus is a term used to describe someone who crosses an invisible boundary and brings something into this world, which might have a very large or a very small impact, that humanity loses the ability to control. In Frankenstein, Mary Shelly names Victor Frankenstein as a Modern Prometheus. Like the Prometheus from the myths, he steps over the boundaries and creates a superhuman homunculus who he cannot control, and who eventually destroys everything that was important in life for Victor. A modern Prometheus, however, does not always create something that is harmful, but rather something that can cause harm because it is beyond... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Social media had been around for approximately 7 years when Facebook was originally launch the first site being Six Degrees, which was launched in the spring of 1997 (CBC News Staff). However, it is not the introduction of the idea of social media that makes Zuckerberg a modern Prometheus, but rather the extraordinary growth and success of his creation, Facebook, that gives him this title. Mark Zuckerberg recently said that ...Just wanting to connect people has been a pretty deep thing for me...it s something that I have cared about since I was a kid... (Zuckerberg, Highlights from Q A with Mark). He then goes on to recount how, when he was a child, he wanted all children to communicate to resolve their issues rather than fighting over them. Facebook was designed to help people connect and communicate with each other. However, Zuckerberg himself said ...you know, Facebook is not a static thing... (Zuckerberg, Highlights from Q A with Mark). This constant transformation of Facebook is slowly but surely pushing the boundaries of what we as humans had and has gradually given us something of which the implications go far beyond what anyone could have imagined 11 years ago when Facebook was first ... • 3. The Influence Of Jazz Music Jazz is one of few purely American art forms. Its creation came out of the southern United States and the social conditions associated with the relationship between the white and African American communities there (Larson 1). African American musicians in particular were the key proponents in the development of jazzin the early 20th century. The creation and shaping of jazz music came from a combination of the musical styles of spirituals, the blues, ragtime, and Western European classical music (Larson 37 38). Although jazz originated from these four styles, defining jazz itself cannot be done so plainly. Since its origin, jazz has continued to progress and branch out into a wide variety of musical styles and genres. At its root, jazz is about the individual expression of the musician (Larson 2). John Coltranewas one of many musicians that used jazz as this medium. Through his early works in the bebop and hard bop styles to free form and more spiritual styled music later in his career, Coltrane pursued deeper expression from his music (Wikipedia). John Coltrane s upbringing and early interest in music led to a successful career of highly innovative works that have left a lasting legacy and influence on the jazz community. John William Coltrane was born September 23, 1926 in Hamlet, North Carolina. His family moved to High Point, North Carolina shortly after his birth and would remain there throughout his childhood. • 4. Pros And Cons Of Self Driving Cars Technology is ever advancing in our society today. It continues to progress and further itself and it is benefiting us substantially. It is helping our epistemological understanding on the way the world operates and how to further our work and understanding of the world. It is benefiting us economically, making it faster to produce goods and creating new ways to make money. One of the fastest growing ways to earn a fortune is that of the automobileindustry and the evolution of cars. In the early 1900 s, Henry Ford start the assembly line for the Model T, which mass produced cars. It evolves with interchangeable parts, so if something broke it was less expensive to repair. 100 years later, we now look to make cars able to drive on their own, self driving cars, but is it a good idea? There are many benefits and just as many negatives to having a self driving car, and this will be a brief synopsis on what some of these reasons are. There are several ways that these self driving cars can be manufactured and operated in order to make them how they are. One method is to attach a copious amount of sensors to the vehicle so anytime it senses an object coming it ll avoid it. This method wouldn t be very practical, however, because oncoming traffic would run the car off the road. There would also be no way to keep the vehicle in the road because there would be nothing to keep the vehicle on the road. Or, possibly, the sensors could go bad if they get covered with elements anywhere in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Catch 22 Genres Genres are categorizations of any media based on established similarities in writing style and conventions. Instead of a strict set of rules, works under genres typically follow a loose set of guidelines. For example, movies under the horror genre typically employ suspense and mystery to give viewers a sense of unease and discomfort. One example of a genreis superhero fiction, chosen mainly because it is one of the most popular genres in movies today. Within this genre, the protagonist or hero is often a superhuman, a person who wields one or more superpower; the antagonist or villain also wields superpowers in order to provide conflict to the protagonist. Action scenes between the hero and the villain or the hero and the villain s grunts are a key part of superhero fiction. Another example of genres is science fictionwhich is chosen due to its wide prevalence in literature. Writers of this genre typically speculate on more advanced technology such as space travel and artificial intelligence wielded by either humans or some other sentient species introduced by the writers. While this... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Genres are fluid: they often respond to changes within the world. For example, Joseph Heller s satirical novel Catch 22 became popular as it reflected the growing opposition towards the Vietnam War in the 1960s through its criticism of the military complex (BBC News, 2012). Because genres are fluid, they frequently change to reflect the shifting expectations of readers or viewers. The superhero genre, for instance, evolved from simple stories involving the triumph of good over evil in its beginning to stories incorporating darker and grittier themes today. New genres also form to meet the developing needs of consumers. For instance, satire developed as a means to draw attention to faults within society and criticize established groups such as ... Through Ravana s eyes, one can see Indra as ruthless and savage . Indra laid waste to Asuratowns and set fire to beautiful villages. For the artists, this means that while their music may be popular, they aren t getting the benefits that should be receiving from the songs they release. Copyright Issues Another problem that is arising with the growing access to the Internet is the ability for people to make mashups and remixes of existing music. A mashup is the blending of multiple songs to create a new unique track. A remix is a rearrangement of a song with original sounds and melodies added to it. Many free softwares are available to the general public that allows them to use already existing music to create new tracks (Potter, 2012). Although this may seem legal because the new tracks are original, it s still considered copyright. Unless the original artist of the song gives permission for someone to use their track in a mashup or remix, it is illegal to reproduce the music in any way. Unfortunately, due to the number of people who create mashups and remixes of their own, and the difficulty of reaching an artist to gain permission, most people do not attempt it at all. Mashups shared by mashup artists through social media as a form of creative expression, similar to art and writing. Like original art and writing, mashups play a role in global communication. Widespread rural poverty and the low socioeconomic status of children caused the influx of a large supply of rural children that could be acquired relatively cheap. To prevent the interference of the government Thai officials were bribed or in some cases offered a portion of the profits of the trade (Jubilee, 4.) In the past decade the media, most specifically the travel industry, has developed a taste for women with girly qualities. The result of this trend is a steadily increasing demand for underage prostitutes as well as the continual decline in the desired age for child prostitutes. This article discusses what changes are happening now with Government spending on trying to improve flood protection from climate change. Haddon says, States such as New York, California, Oregon and Washington have commissioned research on how sea level rise can affect their communities, while North Carolina banned the studies from informing coastal policies in 2012. There isn t an agreement in the U.S. Government yet that more money needs to be spent on climate change. Surprisingly, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie believes that climate change is a problem, but he doesn t think that climate change affected the damage done by Hurricane Sandy (Haddon 1). • 11. Social Movement Theory Framing, Political Opportunities,... Do the three core concepts of social movement theory framing, political opportunities, and mobilizing structures provide an adequate account of the emergence of social movements? Social movements have been a fundamental part of civilization s freedom. It is the bridge that takes social grievances to the polity. Without this connection, people would not be able to express their concerns freely. A social movementis much more than just spontaneous uprisings with no organization; they are a complex organization that require detailed analysis to understand where they come from. In this sense, I would be devoting my time to analyze the different factors that cause the rise and development of social movements. I will consider a social movement as organized yet informal social entities that are engaged in extra institutional conflict that is oriented towards a goal. These goals can be either aimed at a specific and narrow policy or be more broadly aimed at cultural change (Christiansen, 1, 2009). The frac mining process has several steps. Before frac mining can began all vegetation must be removed from the area. Then to reach the target sandstone, all unwanted rock layers has to be removed. Thirdly the top of the sandstone has to be exposed and since frac sand is cemented together explosive charges has to be placed inside holes drilled near the edge of the mine so the sandstone can break into small pieces. Then loaders are driven in to scoop up sandstones from near the wall of the mine pit. After the loaders scoop up the sandstones they send the sandstones to a crusher which breaks down the large chunks into individual sand grains. Sand grains are then washed to remove any unwanted particles. Once it has been washed, it is stockpiled for drying, sorting, and the final shipment. After the final shipment mine reclamation is started which is when the mined pit is filled back up with rocks and other materials that were not used from the sandstones and the new surface eventually be replanted. The beginning of the discussion starts off with Thrasymachus explaining what exactly he believes justice is; justice is nothing other than the advantage of the stronger. (338c) This statement from Socrates disgusts Thrasymachus because Thrasymachus was simply referring to stronger in the sense of being a ruler, not strong in the sense of being physically larger. To counter Socrates, Thrasymachus explains how different societies are ruled throughout the world whether it be tyrannically, democratically, or otherwise, and how the rulers, those who are strongest, are the ones who make the laws and they do so to their advantage. Thrasymachus establishes this by saying how, A democracysets down democratic laws; a tyranny, tyrannic laws; and the others do the same. • 31. Biology Beetroot Lab Report Investigating Effects of duration of heating on permeability of beetroot cell membrane Introduction: Cell membranes contain many different types of molecules which have different roles in the overall structure of the membrane. Phospholipids form a bilayer, which is the basic structure of the membrane. Their non polar tails form a barrier to most water soluble substances. Membrane proteins serves as channels for transport of metabolites, some act as enzymes or carriers, while some are receptors. Lastly carbohydrate molecules of the membrane are relatively short chain polysaccharides, which has multiple functions, for example, cell cell recognition and acting as receptor sites for chemical signals. The plasma membrane is a permeable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus it forms holes, disrupting the membrane of the beetroot core which essentially prevents the betacyanin pigment from leaving the cell. Also, when exposed under heat, the cholesterol, glycolipids and phospholipids expand, putting pressure on the membrane from inside. The lipid part of the membrane will become liquid, making it open to leakage. The proteins in the membrane will denature, increasing the permeability in the surface. The combination of vibrating molecules and a denaturing membrane would disrupt the organized structure of the membrane. And eventually with a disrupted membrane, betacyanin pigment in the innermost compartment will leak out. When the beetroot sample is heated for a longer period of time, it is exposed to the vigorous and frequent vibrating molecules for a longer duration. This further disrupts the cell membranes making them more fragile, thus more pigment will leak out into the external solution. With more leakage of the betacyanin pigment, the % transmittance should be lower, indicating that the % of light that is able to pass through the beetroot solution should be less as duration heated increases. (Source: http://www.wisegeek.com/what is membrane permeability.htm) Based on previous knowledge, research and the above prediction, I would expect to get results similar to: The data collected of % transmittance can then be used as an indication of changes in membrane permeability of ... Researchers have been approaching these topics from many points of view, angles, and models (Gass, 2013). Regarding second language acquisition, and especially English as a second language, the most researched topics include the effects of the Critical Period on second language learners, age of acquisition, age of onset, and individual differences (i.e. L1, motivation, aptitude) (Gass, 2013). Even though it is possible to find a wide variety of research on L2 acquisition, researchers are still debating on which elements affect learners more. Furthermore, while there is plenty of research on gender differences in the field of first language acquisition, there seems to be a lack of studies on said topic in regards to learning a second language. For said reason this research paper will focus on gender and first language influences on English as a second language acquisition, with the goal to comprehend whether one, both or neither of those factors contributes or hinders L2 acquisition and why. The number of Death Penalty executions from 1977 2010 by color coded States follows: (Death Penalty Information Center, 2012). The basic dispute involving the Death Penalty is whether or not it should be abolished. This dispute has raged for decades in the United States and people on both sides of the debate appear to be equally passionate. Anti Death Penalty individuals propose numerous arguments for banning the Death Penalty; this paper will address three of them: some innocent people are sentenced to death; the Death Penalty is administered arbitrarily; and the Death Penalty is not a deterrent. After presenting those three anti Death Penalty arguments, the pro Death Penalty responses will be examined. Anti Death Penalty Arguments One argument against the Death Penalty is that innocent people are wrongfully convicted and sentenced to death. While the Innocence Project, associated with the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, was not established to abolish the Death Penalty, many of its findings support the innocent convict argument. Both sides are able to present evidence to a jury and the jury discusses and comes up with a verdict. This trend is expected to continue as domestic production of shale oil grows, since rail offers a convenient method of transportation to refineries from these newer production sites that are not well served by existing pipeline infrastructure. Accompanying this growth is an increasing number of incidents and amount of property damage, setting records the past three years. Prufrock is a fictional character with the poets intended audience being fictional as well. In this poem, Eliot uses multiple forms and meters in this monologue, rhyming couplets that have a song like quality while other lines are more like a free verse with no regular meter. Along with blank verse, the poet uses iambic meter which is also used by one of Eliot s favorite authors, Shakespeare. This poem dramatizes the conflicts of a middle aged man that is wandering the city, alone and overcautious. He is full of questions, insecurities and the inability to follow through with his plans. In the form of a dramatic monologue, this modernistic poem is a journey into the mind of a man who may or may not be in love. J. When it comes to African American history and culture, particularly what it has meant to be a man has no clear set of universal rules or guidelines. There are a few different sources such as hip hop and television many young black men across America draw their sense of masculinity from. On the other hand, there are role models in black communities that many young black men also draw their sense of masculinity from. With so many different sources to draw a sense of what it means to be a black man in today s society from what is the true definition of black masculinity. In black media today the hip hop culture is often referred to when defining what it means to be a black person in society. In particular the hip hop culture is where many young black men pull both positive and negative aspects of black masculinity. Many mainstream hip hop songs often create a common misogyny by objectifying and stereotyping women. She starts off, Well I don t usually. Then I, whip it out, rubber no doubt. Step out, show me what you all about. Fingers in your mouth, open up your blouse, pull your G string down South. Aoowww. Acropolis is used to describe any complex built on a tall hill. The Mayan Civilization as well as the Edinburgh in Scotland are both acropolis . In particular, the Athens Acropolis is a magnificent citadel. The construction began in 447 BCE. The construction was overseen by the general Pericles of Athens. The planning alone was an immense procedure. Hundreds of artisans, metal workers, craftspeople, painters, woodcarvers, and literally thousands of unskilled laborers worked on the Acropolis. The end goal was to produce a lasting monument in order to honor the goddess Athena and to declare how glorious the city was. It was especially important to them because they had just won the war against Persia.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Parthenon is known as the Temple of Athena Parthenos. Phidiasand his team (Ictinus and Callicrates) began the process of building the Parthenon in 447 B.C.E. It is one of the main buildings in the Acropolis and was dedicated to honor Athena. The buildings showed a lot of wealth and power to the Athenian empire. The architecture of the Parthenon shows elements of the clarity. The Parthenon has a rather uniquely structured building. There is nothing cookie cutter about the shape. The surfaces are rarely straight and there are hardly any completely horizontal or vertical lines. Instead of using the straight lines they went with more of a slight curve. Also the floor was not flat it had a more pronounced curve than people had seen before which made it stand out. The outer floor was had about a 6 inch difference from the inner floor. The unusual structure of the Parthenon was not due to poor architect skills it was completely ... • 54. The Adaptive Identity The concern about identity is a major existential question. People recognize different objects by their sense, and thus consider their appearance, sound, or smell as their identities. In many cases, even though the physical traits of an object have changed, people still know the object. Therefore, these physical definitions of objects are not their identities. The connections of these characteristics, and furthermore of them and their inner self, define the uniqueness of an individual. Since the massive universe constantly moves toward entropy, the only consistency is change : caterpillars transform to butterflies, the ugly duckling turns into a beautiful swan, and I have become unacquainted with my mother language but more comfortable with English. Thus, I am concerned about my rising ignorance of my own culture and of my true being in the world. But in the poem Identity by A. R. Ammons, I find relief: identity holds its center within but proceeds to randomness on the exterior to adjust and adapt. The spiderand the spider webserve as extended metaphors that represent human beings and their identity. A spider makes web from its body and creates a place for itself in the world. Because the spider silkis formed in its body, it is a portrayal of the inner part of an individual; with the silk, spiders weave webs that identify a species (2). Mostly, they weave a special center (on which they rest), and leave a relatively large circular space around the beautiful ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
