New Product Launch Failure Avoidance
A lecture for startup & established companies on the interferences and barriers (some real, some percieved) to executing the operational launch of their products (NPD, NPI, Phase Gates). ADBA Spring Regulatory Forum - May 2016
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has launched a new strategy to help Great Britain work well by protecting lives, quality of life and livelihoods. The strategy focuses on collective ownership of health and safety, tackling ill health issues in addition to safety, and supporting small businesses. It aims to identify and manage real risks smartly in order to boost Britain's businesses through a healthier, safer and more productive workforce. The waste industry still sees too many fatalities and injuries, so the strategy provides an opportunity for all stakeholders to work together to drive further improvement in health and safety performance.
Severn Trent site visit
Severn Trent Water provides services to over 4.3 million customers in central England and Wales. It aims to source more renewable energy over the next 5-10 years to reduce costs and carbon emissions from its energy-intensive water and wastewater operations. Severn Trent has significantly expanded its renewable energy portfolio from 50 GWh in 2013 to over 252 GWh in 2020 through investments in sewage anaerobic digestion, crop digestion, food waste digestion, and solar power generation.
Nick Cheffins, Peakhill Associates
Most AD plants in 2013 spread digestate straight to land without separating it first. A survey found digestate management cost the average plant -£3.73/tonne, totaling an estimated £7.9 million cost to the industry. As AD capacity increases, the amount of digestate produced is also growing rapidly at a time when key support mechanisms for the industry like feed-in tariffs are decreasing. There is potential to increase the value of digestate fiber from £5/tonne as fertilizer to £100/tonne by using it as a horticultural growing medium.

National Grid is striving to reach its target of at least 80 biomethane connections by 2021. The document discusses National Grid's role in connecting biomethane production sites to the UK gas grid. It outlines National Grid's initial lengthy process for connection and an improved streamlined process that combines steps and turns what was previously a months-long process into just days to issue a connection agreement. Government funding of £41.5 million in 2014-15 supported translating biological research into industrial processes and manufacturing new or improved products. Key areas included production of chemicals, fuels, proteins and improving upstream/downstream processes. The panel discussion focused on these topics.

Ann Ballinger, Eunomia
Ann Ballinger from Eunomia Research & Consulting presented the results of a cost benefit analysis of different options for managing digestate from anaerobic digestion in Wales. The analysis considered eight options including applying whole digestate to agricultural land, dilution to different dry solid percentages, various treatment processes, and transport distances. The results showed that applying whole digestate to land was the best option environmentally but that financial costs increased with additional processing. Dilution to 20% dry solids with 80km transport had the lowest overall costs. Biological oxidation of liquor followed by discharge to watercourses was also competitive. Longer transport distances favored treatment before land application.

He described providing green kerbside food waste caddies for weekly collection and silver kitchen caddies for raw and cooked food waste. Improving collections requires communication with stickers and liners, support through education, and involvement through school and business programs. The panel discussed best practices with organizations including the Organic Resource Agency and Biogas Weser-Ems GmbH.

There are frequent accidents at anaerobic digestion plants during construction and operation due to gas explosions and exposure to toxic hydrogen sulfide gas. Many of these accidents are preventable through proper risk mitigation measures. During construction, risks can be reduced through adherence to the Construction Design and Management regulations, which require principal designers and careful attention to interfaces between equipment. During operation, permanent gas monitoring, confined space procedures, training, and permit-to-work programs can help protect workers from gas exposure. Incident reports show common risks involve maintenance activities, mixing of feedstocks, and overloading of digesters leading to gas release.
