Name of project: Cost analysis of Lettuce Production
Location: North Georgetown Secondary School. Agricultural Plot. Thomas Land.
Duration: 6 Weeks (October 7th, 2015- November 11th, 2015)
Description of Activity
Land Preparation
 Land clearing- This was done to remove unwanted vegetation using manual method
(cutlass). This process discourages competition for soil nutrients moisture and root space
for proper growth between lettuce seedlings.
 Tillage (Primary and Secondary) - Beds was harrowed and ploughed to allow aeration to
restore moisture to the top soil. After this, beds were leveled using a rake.
 Construction of beds and drains- Drains were dug to remove excess water from the
surface of the soil. Drains were dug at a depth of 12 cm and 1ft.
 Mixing in of Manure- Cow manure was used to give the soil nutrients so that the soil can
become more friable providing nutrients and aid in organic content.
 Transplanting of seedlings- Each bed had four holes of equal depth and spacing. Seeds
were sowed 38cm between rows and 3cm within the row.
 Construction of sheds- This was conducted along with making of fork sticks to provide a
form of warmth and shelter for the lettuce seedlings because they would have been in a
state of shock after transplanting.
 Routine activities-This project included watering the plants twice per day, aeration
whenever it was required and weed control activity was continued.
 Harvesting- This was done in the last week whereby lettuce was harvested manual.
 Marketing- Lettuce was sold to students in the school for $200 was a profit of $860 was
made.

Comparison of Data
Comparison of Projected and Actual Income
The projected income was higher than the actual income because it was
projected that the lettuce would have been sold at $360 but was actually sold for $200 due to the
current market price at the time of harvest. There was a difference of $800 between the
projected and actual income.
Comparison of Projected and Actual Expenditure
The projected expenditure was higher than the actual expenditure
because it was projected that the total cost for all the items needed was $2680 but the total cost
for all the items needed was actually $ 1540. There was a difference of $ 1140 between the
actual and projected income.
Comparison of the Projected and Actual Surplus
The projected surplus was more than the actual surplus because a profit
was made from lettuce production. There was a difference of $780 between the actual and
projected surplus.
General Comments
Lettuce was grown successful without any unwanted vegetation because it was removed with
seven dusts. Cow manure was used, making the soil compact (clayey soil). The manure
will give the soil nutrients so that both clayey and sandy soils can form small clods to produce
humus. Lettuce is of great demand since a profit was made. Land clearing, mulching, mixing in
of manure and Routine activities all contributed to the growth of lettuce. Lettuce was grown for
6 weeks. Lettuce was harvested and a profit was made.
Conclusion
 A profit was obtained from a venture of lettuce production. A profit of $ 840 was made.
Recommendations
 Hydroponics can be practiced since it is planting the crops without soil. It has advantage
whereby the crops will have optimum humidity and it controls micro- climate.
 Urea can be applied since it is readily available and have nitrogen.

  • 2. Description of Activity Land Preparation  Land clearing- This was done to remove unwanted vegetation using manual method (cutlass). This process discourages competition for soil nutrients moisture and root space for proper growth between lettuce seedlings.  Tillage (Primary and Secondary) - Beds was harrowed and ploughed to allow aeration to restore moisture to the top soil. After this, beds were leveled using a rake.  Construction of beds and drains- Drains were dug to remove excess water from the surface of the soil. Drains were dug at a depth of 12 cm and 1ft.  Mixing in of Manure- Cow manure was used to give the soil nutrients so that the soil can become more friable providing nutrients and aid in organic content.  Transplanting of seedlings- Each bed had four holes of equal depth and spacing. Seeds were sowed 38cm between rows and 3cm within the row.  Construction of sheds- This was conducted along with making of fork sticks to provide a form of warmth and shelter for the lettuce seedlings because they would have been in a state of shock after transplanting.  Routine activities-This project included watering the plants twice per day, aeration whenever it was required and weed control activity was continued.  Harvesting- This was done in the last week whereby lettuce was harvested manual.  Marketing- Lettuce was sold to students in the school for $200 was a profit of $860 was made.

  • 8. General Comments Lettuce was grown successful without any unwanted vegetation because it was removed with seven dusts. Cow manure was used, making the soil compact (clayey soil). The manure will give the soil nutrients so that both clayey and sandy soils can form small clods to produce humus. Lettuce is of great demand since a profit was made. Land clearing, mulching, mixing in of manure and Routine activities all contributed to the growth of lettuce. Lettuce was grown for 6 weeks. Lettuce was harvested and a profit was made. Conclusion  A profit was obtained from a venture of lettuce production. A profit of $ 840 was made. Recommendations  Hydroponics can be practiced since it is planting the crops without soil. It has advantage whereby the crops will have optimum humidity and it controls micro- climate.  Urea can be applied since it is readily available and have nitrogen.
