Situation:
l Your	role:	Buyer.	You	are	at	the	market	and	you	want	to	buy	a	new	rug.
l Your	teacher’s	role:	Seller.	The	seller	wants	to	get	a	high	price	for	the	rug.
Key	Information:
l There	is	no	price	tag	on	the	rug.
Negotiation	Instructions:
l Negotiate	the	price	of	the	rug	with	the	seller.
l Be	sure	to	ask	questions	such	as	“is	the	price	negotiable?”,	 and	“why	is	the	rug	so	
expensive?”
l Consider	using	the	“Final	Offer”	approach	to	end	the	negotiation.
l Do	not	accept	a	price	higher	than	$100.

Situation:
l Your	role:	Buyer.	You	are	at	the	car	dealership	and	you	want	to	buy	a	new	car.
l Your	teacher’s	role:	Seller.	The	seller	wants	to	get	a	high	price	for	the	car.
Key	Information:
l The	listed	price	of	the	car	is	$30,000.
l Your	brother	bought	the	same	car	last	week	at	a	different	car	dealership	for	$25,000.
Negotiation	Instructions:
l Negotiate	the	price	of	the	car	with	the	seller.
l Consider	using	the	“Final	Offer”	approach	to	end	the	negotiation.	Remember,	you	
have	negotiating	leverage	because	you	can	buy	the	car	at	another	dealership	for	
$25,000.
l Do	not	accept	a	price	higher	than	$25,000.
Negotiation	Tips

In	this	lesson,	you	will	conduct	two	simple	negotiations.	
Here	are	some	tips	to	help	you	prepare:
l Assume	that	all	prices	are	negotiable: in	a	market	setting,	most	prices	are	
negotiable;	always	ask	the	seller	if	he/she is	willing	to	negotiate.	The	answer	is	
usually	“Yes”!
l No	offer	is	too	low: when	you	make	your	first	offer,	don’t	be	afraid	to	suggest	a	low	
price.	The	final	price	will	likely	be	higher	than	your	initial	offer,	so	you	want	to	start	
low.
l “Final	offer”	approach: one	way	to	end	a	negotiation	 is	provide	a	“final	offer”.	Give	
the	seller	a	price,	and	tell	the	seller	it	is	your	final	offer.	If	the	seller	says	no,	then	
walk	away	and	purchase	the	goods	from	a	different	seller.
Sample	Negotiation

Buyer:	 How	much	is	this	rug?
Seller: This	rug	is	50	dollars.	Do	you	want	to	buy	it?
Buyer:	 I	like	the	rug,	but	50	dollars	is	too	expensive.	Are	you	willing	to	negotiate?
Seller: Yes,	I	will	negotiate.	How	much	do	you	want	to	pay?
Buyer:	 I	think	this	rug	is	worth	10	dollars.	Will	you	accept	10	dollars?
Seller:
No,	10	dollars	is	not	enough.	This	is	a	great	rug!	It	is	worth	a	lot	more	than	
10	dollars.
Buyer:	 I	agree,	it	is	a	nice	rug!	I	will	offer	you	25	dollars.	But	that	is	my	Final	Offer.
Seller: You	have	a	deal.	I	will	sell	you	the	rug	for	25	dollars.
