Principles of Bracing: • The principles of a brace are based on a hydraulic theory. • The brace provides compression to the muscles compartments which are a bulky fluid mass confined within the boundary of the facia, therefore increasing the tension within the soft tissues thus stabilising the fracture site • Sarmiento recommends the ability to maintain the soft tissue COMPRESSION is far more important than the rigidity of the material used to manufacture the brace
- 16. Into The 1990s… • 1990s – Casting technicians (Germany and Holland began to make casts in different ways to established POP techniques). • They challenged the two stage approach and the actual rigidity of the casts themselves.

Also developed minimal casts • 1993 - German cast technician (Schleikis) published the use of a straight through DCC cast in the treatment of distal radius fractures. Compared fibreglass against polyester
- 18. Into The 1990s… 1996 – Theo Van Diemen – trial of 200 straight through unsplit FRC casts where swelling is not anticipated. 1998 – Anne Petty, Chris Wardman, Published the results from a RCT, undertaken at Bradford Royal Infirmary. 200 patients, included 5 injury groups.
