This document describes the MapReduce programming model for processing large datasets in a distributed manner. MapReduce allows users to write map and reduce functions that are automatically parallelized and run across large clusters. The input data is split and the map tasks run in parallel, producing intermediate key-value pairs. These are shuffled and input to the reduce tasks, which produce the final output. The system handles failures, scheduling and parallelization transparently, making it easy for programmers to write distributed applications.

The insatiable desire for more capacity and faster datarate arising from the explosion in bandwidth-intense applications necessitates deployment of higher capacity WDM systems in both inside datacenter and metro datacenter interconnects systems. This demand for higher datarates is reflected by the numerous standardization and study groups commenced in the last couple of years. While the standardization scrutinizes the requirements for smooth migration for a datacenter interconnect with distances of upto 40km, the upgrade to high capacity DC metro access networks (beyond 40km), where no standardization exists, needs to address the economic viability together with greater space, power and bandwidth efficiency requirements. This presentation focuses on both of these areas and elucidates the current trends and evolving technologies to deal with the dynamically shifting landscape of DCI.

VXLAN is a point to point, UDP-based "tunneling" protocol, that enables L2 encapsulation over an L3 "undernet", while also allowing up to 16 million Virtual Networks. One challenge with deploying VXLAN is that by default VXLAN requires multicast support for Broadcast, Unknown and Multi-cast packets. Often this is not possible in customer networks. An alternative approach is to use the Service Node concept where dedicated node(s)/process(es) are responsible for flooding Broadcast, Unknown, and Multicast packets throughout a network.
This removes the need for multi-cast, and greatly simplifies network configuration. However, it does require a scalable, and highly available implementation.
Built on the ADVA FSP 150 product family, One Network Edge is the most comprehensive range of edge devices available in the industry. Combining a mixture of hardware and software that ensures quick and easy service implementation with low operational impact, One Network Edge is a one-stop shop for high-value communication solutions. Covering service demarcation and performance assurance, virtual network function hosting, security, and synchronization delivery, One Network Edge has been specifically engineered to meet every edge application.
vPC allows links connected to two Nexus switches to appear as a single port channel to a third device. It provides advantages like eliminating STP blocked ports, using all available uplink bandwidth, and fast convergence upon failures. Configuring vPC involves the vPC peer switches, peer link, domain, and member ports. vPC avoids loops at the data plane layer. It can be used within a single data center for active-active server connectivity or between two data centers to extend VLANs across sites at layer 2. Object tracking allows vPC to modify its state based on peer link states.
Flexible Data Centre Fabric - FabricPath/TRILL, OTV, LISP and VXLANCisco Canada
This document discusses several technologies for building flexible data center fabrics including FabricPath/TRILL, VXLAN, LISP, and OTV. It provides an overview of the goals of the data center fabric including addressing workload mobility, scalability, and high availability. It also summarizes some of the key capabilities and advantages of technologies like FabricPath, VXLAN, LISP, and OTV for building flexible intra- and inter-DC fabrics.
It's common business policy for organizations of a certain size to have two data centers as part of a disaster recovery or business continuity plan. However, most enterprise - applications are not designed for or intended to use systems in two different locations.
Enter the notion of a data center interconnect, which extends an Ethernet network between two physically separate data centers. While the idea is simple, Ethernet wasn't designed to run across a wide area network. Thus, a DCI implementation requires a variety of technological fixes to work around Ethernet's limitations.
This report outlines the issues that complicate DCIs, such as loops that can bring down networks and traffic trombones that eat up bandwidth. It also examines the variety of options companies have to connect two or more data centers, including dark fiber, MPLS services and MLAG, as well as vendor specific options such as Cisco OTV and HP EVI. The report looks at the pros and cons of each option.
This webinar explains why PISA chips are inevitable, provides overview of machine architecture of such switches, presents a brief primer on the P4 language with sample programs for a variety of networks and demonstrates a powerful network diagnostics application implemented in P4.
Programmability in SDNs is confined to the network control plane. The forwarding plane is still largely dictated by fixed-function switching chips. Our goal is to change that, and to allow programmers to define how packets are to be processed all the way down to the wire.
This is made possible by a new generation of high-performance forwarding chips. At the high-end, PISA (Protocol-Independent Switch Architecture) chips promise multi-Tb/s of packet processing. At the mid- and low-end of the performance spectrum, CPUs, GPUs, FPGAs, and NPUs already offer great flexibility with performance of a few tens to hundreds of Gb/s.
In addition to programmable forwarding chips, we also need a high-level language to dictate the forwarding behavior in a target independent fashion. "P4" (www.p4.org) is such a language. In P4, the programer declares how packets are to be processed, and a compiler generates a configuration for a PISA chip, or a programmable target in general. For example, the programmer might program the switch to be a top-of-rack switch, a firewall, or a load-balancer; and might add features to run automatic diagnostics and novel congestion control algorithms.
Building DataCenter networks with VXLAN BGP-EVPNCisco Canada
The session specifically covers the requirements and approaches for deploying the Underlay, Overlay as well as the inter-Fabric connectivity of Data Center Networks or Fabrics. Within the VXLAN BGP-EVPN based Overlay, we focus on the insights like forwarding and control plane functions which are critical to the simplicity operation of the architecture in achieving scale, small failure domains and consistent configuration. To complete the overlay view on VXLAN BGP-EVPN, we are going to the insides of BGP and its EVPN address-familiy and extend to about how multiple DC Fabric can be interconnected within, either as stretched Fabrics or with true DCI. The session concludes with a brief overview of manageability functions, network orchestration capabilities and multi-tenancy details. This Advanced session is intended for network, design and operation engineers from Enterprises to Service Providers.
In a telecommunications network, a switch is a device that channels incoming data from any of multiple input ports to the specific output port that will take the data toward its intended destination.

The need for GBaaS as GPS/GNSS is no longer a reliable source for critical PN...ADVA
Critical network infrastructure is increasingly dependent on precise synchronization and timing. As operators address this need by adding GNSS receivers across their geographically dispersed networks, their infrastructure becomes more and more vulnerable to jamming and spoofing attacks. At PTTI, Nino De Falcis explained how GNSS/GPS-backup-as-a-service (GBaaS) makes timing networks independent from GNSS. With GBaaS, a specialized service provider operates a robust and reliable network, delivering precise and secure timing to critical infrastructure as a backup to highly vulnerable GNSS.

ePRTC in data centers - GNSS-backup-as-a-service (GBaaS)ADVA
Accurate timing is essential for effective operations in today’s data centers. An ePRTC synchronization source can offer the levels of precise synchronization required and remove vulnerability to GNSS outages. With the latest optical timing channel (OTC) technology, PTP-optimized optical transport can be used to distribute accurate timing all the way from the core of the network to the edge. What’s more, this can be delivered through GNSS/GPS-backup-as-a-service (GBaaS), whereby a specialized service provider operates a robust and reliable network, supplying precise and secure timing as a backup to highly vulnerable GNSS. In his ITSF 2022 presentation, Igal Pinhasov explored the value of utilizing GBaaS to provide accurate time for data centers using optical timing channel technology over long distances.

Optical networks and the ecodesign tradeoff between climate change mitigation...ADVA
1. Optical networks face several environmental challenges including high power consumption that outpaces efficiency increases, e-waste generation that exceeds recycling capabilities, and reliance on critical raw materials.
2. Timely equipment replacement aims to minimize total lifetime emissions but contradicts circular economy goals, demonstrating the complex tradeoffs between climate mitigation and adaptation that optical network design entails.
3. Both maximizing the carbon savings enabled by digitalization and improving the sector's climate change adaptation are necessary to help meet climate targets while ensuring raw material and waste sustainability.
Trends in next-generation data center interconnects (DCI)ADVA

Open optical edge connecting mobile access networksADVA
Generic optics, developed for applications different from RANs, may not fit the requirements of the mobile transport network. Optical components natively conceived for radio access and based on technologies driven by its requirements (right optics at the right time and the right cost) would accelerate the pace at which RANs are deployed and decrease the relative cost of the optics as part of the total RAN solution. In this session, Jim Zou looked at how emerging innovation is enhancing networking energy efficiency. While today’s solutions focus on high-end performance and end user experience, tomorrow’s infrastructure must also balance energy efficiency with varying traffic loads, and designs focused on sustainability.

From leased lines to optical spectrum servicesADVA
This document discusses optical spectrum as a service, which allows communication service providers (CSPs) to sell unused optical spectrum. Advances in coherent transport and flexgrid open line systems now enable CSPs to segment spectrum into slices and assign them to different users. This transforms spectrum into a new service that CSPs can offer beyond traditional leased lines. Realizing spectrum as a service requires an open line system with programmable spectrum allocation, flexible grid technology, service demarcation functions, and network slicing through open control and management. Several examples demonstrate how spectrum services are being implemented in multi-domain and multi-operator networks.
Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
