Compare and contrast Ben Jonson’s ‘The Alchemist’ and...
The study will encompass the compare and contrast of two great writers literary works. It will take
comprehensive discussion on Ben Jonson s The Alchemist and William Shakespeare s The Tempest .
Jonson and Shakespeare were contemporaries with more immediately recognizable common ground
between them than difference. They shared the same profession and brought forth their works from the
matrix of common intellectual property. They appealed to the same audience and both gained
popularity and esteem as accomplished playwrights. At the more social level, they were both
struggling artists conscious of the need for patronage and support from their wealthier and more
powerful peers. Both Jonson and Shakespeare experienced the trials and ... Show more content on

The distinction between I and him is emphasized by Jonson s assertion of an answer to Shakespeare s
way of doing things. The quest for self knowledge has been integral to the structures and evolution of
human society throughout history. During the early modem period, the classical maxim of nosce
teipsum operated almost universally, not only as a prompt towards, but also as a goal of, both
individual and communal achievement and actualization. At one level, Hamlet s tribute may be taken
as an adumbration of the Renaissance engagement with the epistemological enquiries into the nature
of man, and his place and function in the cosmic chain of being. What a piece of work is a man, How
noble in reason, how infinite in faculty, in form and moving how express and admirable, in action how
like an angel, in apprehension how like a god the beauty of the world, the paragon of animals. And yet
to me what is this quintessence of dust? Jonson explicitly bases their sense of the play s similarity
upon theories of comedy that imply such affirmation. In Volpone and The Alchemist, Jonson sues
irony to expose how far short of the ideal is the world of the play, and thus celebrates the ideal
indirectly. If the

IN SEARCH OF.... SPIRITUALITY
Growing up I used to watch a show hosted by Leonard Nimoy, Spock from Star Trek, called: In

various topics from paranormal phenomena, to myths, monsters and witchcraft. For most of my life,
spirituality was a very similar elusive quest.
I was raised in religion. Catholicism. Its impact may not have meant much at the time but as my life

Homer s Use Of Authority In The Iliad
The word authority originated from the Latin verb augere which means to increase or promote. From
the perspective of an everyday usage it has broad meanings and associations such as power to enforce
obedience, or power to influence action and when we are using authority we are referring to a person
or group of people who exercise that power. Moreover, authority is associated with social force and is
linked to ideas of power through knowledge thus, we ought to respect it. Furthermore, authority
depends on collective consent and they are the ones who give approval to authorities in order for their
work to be a literary canon. Even though, the word canon was initially referenced only to religious
texts such as the Bible and its like but it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It starts with But Achilles was coming closer, like Enyalius here the poet is showing us the bravery of
Achilles by comparing him to the war of god and how good he is in the battlefield. He goes further on
by glorifying the war and the protagonist and enhancing it by saying The bronze around him glittered
like a blazing fire or rising sun. Also, Homer is eloquent in the language and that is proven by how the
choice of his vocabulary, for example when he was narrating the fastness of Achilles when chasing
Hector Pelus son went after him, sure of his speed on foot. Just as a mountain falcon, the fastest
creature of all the ones which fly, swoops down easily on a trembling pigeon as it darts off in fear, the
hawk speeding after it with piercing cries here, he is comparing the speed of Achilles with the fastest
bird and it is also an extended simile and he is trying to show us both the speed and power of the hero
and how he wants to devour its victory. These are just few examples of the similes the poet used but
we can see that he has in depth knowledge of the event and time is not a limited factor since he is able
to narrate the past, current and events that may happen in the future, he also knows what the Gods are
discussing regards to human affairs. Homer is also rich in language and he is able to play with the
language in various ways, such as the usage of similes and puns, he is talking about the fig tree, which
is alluded to the bible and it is referring to the beginning of the

Screwtape Letter Research Paper
Indeed, the safest road to Hell is the gradual one... (Lewis 61).
Throughout The Screwtape Letters, Screwtape consistently reiterates his
idea that the gradual road to hell is the safest . Because Screwtape
places so much emphasis on the gradual road, one must stop and consider
it closely. This gives us three questions that we should consider: What is
the gradual road to hell? How does Satan use it? How can the
Christian be on guard?
The gradual road to hell is the small sins that can separate someone
from God without the person even noticing they are drifting away. While
many people may believe that the quickest ways into hell are big sins like
murder, rape, and stealing, Screwtape seems to think the contrary. He ... Show more content on

Murder is no better than cards if cards can do the trick (60 61).
In reality, no sin is greater than another. Satan understands that, though
we often do not, and will use that to his advantage.
Satan uses the gradual road to hell to enslave the victim often without the victim knowing what is
happening. If the Christian knew
he was on the steep road down, he would surely notice and turn around.
As Screwtape says:
As long as he retains externally the habits of a Christian he can still be made to think of himself as one
who has adopted a few new friends and amusements but whose spiritual state is much the same as it
was three weeks ago. And while he thinks that, we do not have to contend with the explicit repentance
of a definite, fully recognised, sin, but only with this vague, though uneasy, feeling that he hasn t been
doing very well lately. (57 58)
If Satan is able to keep us entangled in sin, no matter how small, we begin
to drift away from God and follow our own path, while still thinking we are
close to God, when the reality is that we have given ourselves over to
something else. The reason Satan s methods work is because we are so often
focused on ourselves that we don t even see the road we are walking.

Role Of Investment And Commercial Banks Play On The Global...
Introduction: This paper will examine the roles that investment and commercial banks play in creating
and predicting systemic risk in the global economy. This topic is of particular relevance due to the
events that unfolded in the economic sphere nearly a decade ago during the financial crisis of 2007
2008. Our study will provide a detailed rendering of the crisis, outlining each of the key factors that
contributed to the crash in an attempt to gain a better understanding of what happened and how to
avoid similar events from unfolding in the future. Much of our study hinges on the role of banks on
the markets and their influence over global systemic risk. In order to establish a link between bank
prices and economic trends, we will focus our analysis on one key metric, Value at Risk (VaR). A
powerful statistical measurement, VaR is used to assess a firm s potential loss over a certain period of
time. To generate a diversified and complete quantitative analysis, our calculation will incorporate
pricing data from January 1st, 2000 to November 30th, 2016 of eleven of the most prevalent banks in
the US financial system: Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Barclays, Citi Bank, Credit Suisse, Deutsche
Bank, Goldman Sachs, HSBC, JP Morgan, Royal Bank of Canada, UBS, and Wells Fargo. Our aim is
to establish a predictive correlation between the historical performance of these banks and the markets
in order to avoid downturns such as the financial crisis of 2007 08 from happening in the

Essay on Dances With Wolves by Michael Blake
Dances With Wolves by Michael Blake is a novel that covers the topics of cross culture, equality and
respect. It also shows me the history of modern America. Reading this novel is a great adventure to
me. Through years of getting ready, Michael Blake spent nine months on writing the book and got it
done in 1981. The story happens in 1863, when US civil war was in ongoing. Knowing the potential
amputation of his wounded leg, Union Army Officer Lieutenant John J. Dunbar turns suicidal and
rides a horse to attract the enemy during a strange standoff. His act of suicide has the unexpected
effect of rallying his comrades who win the battle later, thus, was misconstrued as bravery and earns

Dunbar becomes a hero among the Comanche after he helps locate and hunt the buffalo on which the
life of Comanche depends. After being seen the larkishness with Two Socks, a older wolf who s been
named and befriended by Dunbar, he is given a Comanche name Dances With Wolves by Kicking
Bird who is a medicine man and wondering the reason of Dunbar s alone existence in the deserted
fort. Dances With Wolves is integrating into the Comanche with the help of Kicking Bird who assigns
Stands With A Fist to be the translator and teach Comanche language. Dances With Wolves and Stands

Comanche fight off the raid from Pawnee by providing weapons. But his idyllic life ends when he
tells Kicking Bird and Ten Bears, chief of the Comanche the inevitable coming and invasion of white
soldiers to their land. Then, Ten Bears decides to move the village to its winter camp. Before their
leaving, Dunbar rides Cisco back to Fort Sedgewick for his journal and gets captured by the
reinforcing Army troops. Without any evidence to prove his post in Fort Sedgewick (his journals gets

Hispanic Immigration And The United States
Hispanic immigration to the United States stems primarily from uniquely developed push pull
migration mechanisms in which interplay of national, regional, and global economic developments,
the history of U.S. military and foreign policy in the Western Hemisphere, the checkered history of
international border enforcement and interdiction efforts, and, not least, the aspirations of Latin
American migrants and potential migrants themselves (Gutierrez). In other words, migration from
Latin American to the United States shouldn t have been consistent, however, there are several factors
that triggered massive waves of such.
The first major wave of Hispanic migration to the United States was in 1848, which was a result from
the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The newly acquired lands of the United States hosted a population
of about 75,000 100,000 and the U.S. Government offered blanket naturalization to the former
Mexican Citizens. After the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Mexican immigration to the U.S.
average[d] 3,000 5,000 persons per decade, with the exception of the California Gold Rush, where
around 10,000 Mexican miners migrated to California, all totaling to about 100,000 Mexicans in the
U.S. by the end of the 1900 (Gutierrez). However, historical migration statistics for this period are
inaccurate because of inconsistent enumeration techniques, changing methods of ethnic and racial
classification in the U.S., and the constant movement of uncounted thousands of

Interval Walking Benefits
Walking is a proven exercise that carries a wealth of benefits. However, if you want to up the ante a
little bit and gain more benefits from your walking regimen, you can do interval walking. This is a
type of walking exercise where you walk at a steady pace and then like interval training, do short
bursts of aerobic activity combined with periods of rest and recovery.
For example, if you are planning to do brisk walking for 30 minutes, you can speed up the pace by
jogging for about two to three minutes every five minute intervals. If you are on the treadmill, do the
same thing by breaking into a run or getting off the equipment and doing jumping jacks. The same
thing can be done when you are power walking two minutes of slow jogging every five minutes. You
can adjust the time intervals depending on your fitness ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You will definitely lose weight faster if you break out of your plateau by modifying your walking
workouts this way.
Another benefit if you interval walk is increased stamina and endurance due to a strengthened
cardiovascular system. Regular walking, by itself, already reduces your risk of high blood pressure,
type 2 diabetes and heart attack. It lowers your cholesterol and blood sugar levels and protects you
from kidney diseases and the development of cancers. When you interval walk, you enhance your
cardiovascular capacity and as a result are able to reap these benefits even if you only do the exercise
in a much shorter period than what your regular walking regimen would actually take.
Since a little high impact routine is included in interval walking, make sure that you consult with your
doctor before adding this to your workout repertoire if you have a heart or some other medical
condition. Also, wear comfortable clothing and well fitting shoes before you go out to walk. Don t
forget to bring a bottle of water with you as

The Origins Of Christianity And Christianity
Christianity is one of the most common religions of the world and was founded in the early stages of
time as we know it. Christianity was formed by the power of one man, Jesus Christ, whose life was
unexplainably different from anyone else s of his time. The influences of his character, beliefs,
customs, and teachings, are the foundation of the religion today. Throughout time and as more
knowledge was gained and received, the customs of the religion changed and new smaller groups
broke free from tradition and formed themselves into their own organizations. Every event that
happened shaped the religion, but the messiah or better known as the Son of God, played the most
important role. Jesus Christ born circa 6 B.C in Bethlehem which is the south city of Jerusalem was
born of Virgin Mary and Joseph, but as the author states, Christians have believed that Jesus was born
in Bethlehem. The details are fully explained in the rabbinic interpretation which is provided in the
Old Testament. (Fisher, 2014, 305) There is very little written about Jesus s early life. But what is said
in The Gospel of Luke (2:41 52) conveys that when Jesus was 12 years old, he had accompanied his
parents on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and they became disunited. After a few days, he was found in a
temple conversing affairs with some of Jerusalem s elders. Throughout the New Testament, there are a
few trace references of Jesus working as a carpenter while he was a young adult. Moreover, at age 30

Impact Of Technology On Business Techniques
1. Introduction The analyzation of data or the observation of information has never been an
uncommon occurrence; these analyses have grown exponentially since the rise of technology in the
21st century. The results produced through big data analysis have the potential to be paradigm
altering; the implications run much deeper than simply connecting x to y. Although its foundations
have been interwoven into society, big data has only recently become a commonly known term. Still,
very few are well versed in the subject. What exactly is big data? Danah Boyd and Kate Crawford put
it in the simplest terms when they define it as, very large data sets and the tools and procedures used to
manipulate and analyze them (Boyd and Crawford). This manipulation is vital to many large
corporations as they attempt to harness the data in order to personalize the consumer experience in
their business techniques. Since its inception, big data has warranted a moral investigation: ethicists
have been scrambling to determine how this alien method of marketing should be dealt with. There
have been the supporters of big data use, while there have also been those who disapprove, vehemently
denouncing even the idea of such a thing. In this paper, big data will be described exactly, including
the way it is projected to affect the marketing world, and how utilitarianism should be applied to the
moral dilemma in order to reach a satisfactory resolution on the topic.

Section One: Choose and Research a Policy
Introduction
At the president s inaugural, the 2010 National Drug Control Strategy presented an evidence based
practice that addressed reducing drug use and eliminating its consequences in the United States
(National Drug Control Strategy, 2013). The president responded by having his administration draft
the third way in drug policy, which rejects taking extreme measures on drug addicts and in
criminalizing them, also minimizing the United States participation in the war on drugs (National
Drug Control Strategy, 2013). This policy hopes to take a nuance approach on drug policy as it aims to
balance public health programs, effective law enforcement, and international partnerships. After all we
are in the twenty first century, where forward thinking is highly commendable and very much needed.
The third way is rooted in the belief that drug addiction is a disease and causes grave damage to the
brain (National Drug Control Strategy, 2013). Therefore it is true that one can seek treatment in hopes
of recovery for his/her disease or one has the ability to completely prevent them from acquiring the
disease of addiction. This policy is believed to represent the future of drug policy not only nationally,
but globally as well (National Drug Control Strategy, 2013). History/Evolution of the Policy The

Lady Gaga And Pop Culture
From pop star sensation to fashion icon, Lady Gaga has influenced pop culture in many ways. After
her 2008 hit single Just Dance the singer quickly gained fame for her unique techno pop music. From
there on she has acquired a huge following and quickly took over the world of pop music. The singer
then used the newly popular twitter website to tweet to her fans. She encouraged them to love
themselves, spread positivity to one another, and most importantly funded her Born This Way
Foundation in hopes of helping bullied victims. Not only did she use her music and social media
account to influence her fans, she also made a broad fashion statement to motivate her fans to be
weird, different, and unique. Many people still remember her famous meat dress she walked the red
carpet in, while others reminisce on all the outrageous outfits she s worn over the years. Over the last
nine years, this pop star diva continues to top the charts with her music, spreading kindness, and
walking the streets wearing memorable outfits. Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta was born March

The Culture Of Asian American And Being Labeled As An Ethnic
Preface
In this essay, I attempted to lay bare the issues of being an Asian American and being labeled as an
ethnic other in modern America. This label of other causes them to become marginalized and lose
their sense of identity, belonging neither to Western culture nor Eastern culture. In order help stop this
loss of identity in Asian Americans, we must tear down the social construct of the other and integrate
the different cultures into the melting pot of popular culture. Once we have stopped alienating
different cultures, we can then have a moral society that upholds diversity and identity.
The Struggles of the Other
The apparent dominance of White Europeans in America results in a common set of values, beliefs,
and norms that are endorsed by Whites, leading to an America whose vision is filtered through the
lens of the White European perspective. This established vision and power creates the social construct
of the ethnic other. As an ethnic other in America, my analysis incorporates my personal experiences
and the experiences of those around me. In a nation that has a population so diverse in personal and
collective identities, problems regarding morality and culture can arise. In the America of the past and
present, the norm by which all are measured against is that of a heterosexual White European. This
norm creates a conflict with the marginalized groups who wish to gain acceptance by and into the
dominant culture, but are not allowed to do so due to their

Grimm s Fairy Tales
I chose to research the genre of fairy tales, specifically the ones written and told by the Grimm
brothers. Fairy tales took shape in sixteenth century Italy as literature for adults. They are known to be
children s stories about magical and imaginary beings in wonderful lands. They can also be described
as a fabricated story, especially one intended to deceive the mind. It typically features European
fantasy characters. The characters may be distinguished from other folk tales such as legends. They
can also be found in oral and literary forms. The term is also used to describe something happy, also
known as a fairy tale ending . The history of the fairy tale is particularly difficult to trace. I am writing

Fairy tales have always appealed to the young and old, and they play an important role in a child s life.
Fairy tales play an important role in a child s life because many fairy tales have a female as the main
character, or they play a very important role. The lead characters of fairy tales, perhaps because they
were originally told by groups of females, are women (Neikirk, par. 9). Some of the stories with strong
female roles that were written by the Grimm brothers include Cinderella , Little Snow White and
Rapunzel . Cinderella was a sweet and innocent young woman who had to do what her evil
stepmother and stepsisters told her to. She was strong and was eventually rewarded while her sisters
are punished with blindness for their wickedness. Snow White runs away to the forest to not be killed
by the Queen. Rapunzel does not fear the wicked woman that keeps her locked in the tower for all of
those years. Women were the ones that did most of the story telling back then, so it makes sense that
they would be the main characters. Fairy tales have never been bedtime stories; in this day and age,
they have morphed into a very effective means of exercising power over women and maintaining
gender inequality (Neikirk, par. 1). Women have always played important roles in society, and the fact
that they play main roles in these stories empowers them even more.

Communication Is A Cornerstone Of Building A Strong...
Introduction
Communication is a cornerstone of building a strong relationship (Robinson, 2012). Numerous studies
show that marriages that do not have an effective communication between partners easily end up in
divorces. Researchers have identified the habits that people have that hinder effective communication
in marriages (Kusi Kusi, 2015). These habits are: avoiding the expression of honest feelings and
opinions about issues; failing to listen to a partner and being quick to react to the partner s comments
on issues; being subjective in a dialogue; failing to allow a partner adequate time to respond to one s
questions; and using negative impolite language that seem to order a partner rather than request a
partner (Kusi Kusi, 2015). These habits and much hinder effective communication in marriages, which
often lead to divorces.
Topic Problem
Many people believe that infidelity is the major cause of divorces in relationships. However, this is not
the case. The main cause of failure in a relationship is the lack of proper communication. Infidelity,
trust issues, different expectations, addictions, responsibilities, money issues, narcissism, and different
priorities are simply the underlying factors that cause a deterioration in communication among couples
(Wright, 2000). Consequently, poor communication, which is triggered by the underlying factors, is
the basic cause of break ups (Chapman, 2013). This research aims to affirm that poor communication
is the major cause

Universal Medical Codes
In the health care system, there are a lot of codes that help diagnose, treat, and discharge patients daily.
Codes help nurses
especially make reports faster along with making them easier to read for individuals within the HIS
department. For a universal set of
codes to be nationally accepted in crucial when dealing with different hospitals. Let s say you are an
individual that was out of town, got
injured and then wanted your care while you were out of town to be documented through medical
records. Medical records at the town
you were in uses a list of codes that are not accepted by the CPT manual. So now, when your records

Why is a universal code manual supposed to be used around the world? Simple, so your care is
properly documented and can be billed to you in the correct manner. Also, another use for medical
codes is to protect yourself from false
documentation. If your documentation is correctly coded according to the CPT manual and everything
else follow correctly, you would be
covered if your documents got tested by someone higher than you or another hospital perhaps. Good
documentation provides a safety
net because it shows exactly what patient care you actually provided. If there is any scrutiny, you are
more protected. (Key Issues
Shaping Clinical Terminology and Classification).
In Radiology, there is not too many codes used within the department. However, when a doctor orders
an exam, often times they
will be abbreviated for the scheduler to schedule the exam. For instance, when we take a wrist x ray,

corporate employees. The company s competition, which includes Amazon and Walmart have had an
advantage over Toys R Us because they mark down toy prices to attract their customers. But the
competition was only part of their problem. The main cause of the company s debt was the inability to
transform its company digitally. In 2009, the company s e commerce sales amounted to only 4%. The
company s failure to properly set up a digital strategy was their main downfall (Lashinsky, 2017).

Daniel Gilbert Happiness
Happiness. It is not tangible, measurable or even understandable. Yet, above all other things, it is what
people seek the most. Individuals draw happiness from a number of different sources, presumably
causing the confusion as to why happiness can not be traced back to a specific object. Still, how can
you possibly meet the expectations of being happy? This article will attempt to demystify the subject
of happiness. The best way to achieve happiness would be by using the 3 aspects of philosophy
created by Sam Berns. These three aspects to the philosophy are as follows,1)accepting flaws in
oneself,2) Surrounding yourself with people whom you want to be around and lastly,3)Keep moving
forward. As simple as it may seem to be contempt with yourself;it s not. Loving yourself or being
fully competent with the flaws you own can either make you or break you, it s a constant work in
progress. If you surround yourself with people who ultimately care about your well being and who

New York City s greatest assets. The city s parks, playgrounds, streets, avenues, stoops and plazas are

The Female Body By Margaret Atwood
Existence of Serving and Survival in The Female Body by Margaret Atwood
Even though humans all have the same label, preferential treatment resides with the males. This is
especially true in The Female Body by Margaret Atwood. Considering the society s perception of how
interaction between races and genders should be, white males are at the top of the social hierarchy. In
this hierarchy, the white are above the coloured and the men are above the females. Hence, women are
given selective and limiting freedom and yet men are also limited by society to the point that most
men do not realise they have limitations placed upon them. Nevertheless men and women do not live
their lives, they survive and yet men seem to enjoy life. Therefore women are marionettes, men are
puppets and society is the puppeteer.
There s a wide range (38) of marionettes and to the men in society; they must have one. A wife that
men will select from many; like selecting an item from the vast versions of the same product. Women
are a commodity that all men eligible for marriage will receive. Hence, women are degraded to as if it
were flesh and blood (38); they are not even considered as humans, but a topic (38) that has the
appearance of a human. Atwood also mentions that female bodies need maintenance like a car would;
a woman that is not human and a female that wants to be more than surviving. Women are objectified
even further by pleasure not being a requirement. Indicating that women are

through media, known as satire. Satire can be defined as, the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the
like, in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice ( satire ) to expose the faults of humanity, institution or
society. Satirists use literary techniques and elements of satire in order to communicate a message to
the reader. That message can be conveyed through the five steps of satire. First is to determine the
object of satire; this usually pokes fun at someone or something resulting in laughter. Next, determine
the underlying message the author is trying to get across. Then, figure out the type of irony which is

nurse. There are several things they need: critical thinking skills, compassion, detail oriented,
emotional, organizational skills, patience, and speaking skills. The median annual wage of registered
nurses was $64,690 in May 2010. That s enough to buy a house or even a brand new car. The median
wage at which half of the workers in a nursing earned more than that amount and half earned less. The

it will also be more need for home healthcare. Now that means more back problems and even more

An Explanation Of Why Sociologists Are Interested On Class
Class is important as it can determine various aspects that will have a significant impact and influence
on how people s lives are shaped. Feminists have argued for other things to be included such as social
divisions to show how they intersect with class. Economic inequalities can have an impact on class as
they can determine a person s status, wealth, income and lifestyle. Class is important as social
inequalities exists amongst the rich and poor. Important social factors include poverty, health and
education. A person s identity is just as important as their class. People may face discrimination due to
their identity, whether that may be due to their gender, age, ethnicity or disability. Social mobility is
where people are in a different social class now from which they were brought up in. However
sociologists argue that class is less important in contemporary society today than it once used to be.
The purpose of this essay is to provide an explanation on why sociologists are interested in class. This
assignment will define what class is and to what extent class matters. Other social divisions will be
explored in this assignment to show how they intersect with class. The social divisions which intersect
with class which will be discussed include economic and social inequalities, social mobility and
identity. The beliefs from well known theorists, Karl Marx and Max Weber who disagreed on the
nature of class, will also be included to support the main points which are

Soon after President Abraham Lincoln died on Good Friday, April 15, 1865, the fatal bullet with
which he was murdered was removed. Dr. Curtis, one of the doctors who performed the procedure,
later wrote, There it [the bullet] lay upon the white china, a little black mass no bigger than the end of
my finger dull, motionless and harmless, yet the cause of such mighty changes in the world s history

Booth s family, a well known family of actors that was famous before the assassination, lost its
positive reputation forever. Also, people who knew Booth or were associated with him were
persecuted for his wrongdoing. An article from the American Civil War Roundtable of Australia, a
conference in Australia for people interested in the Civil War and its aftermath, says that four
supposed co conspirators Lewis Powell, David Herold, George Atzerodt, and Mary Surratt were
hanged for their part in the assassination plot. Mary Surratt s sentencing was considered very
controversial because some evidence against her was later determined to be erroneous, and her
sentence of death shocked the nation. Three men Sam Arnold, Michael O Laughlin, and Dr. Samuel
Mudd were given life prison sentences, and another man, Edmen Spangler, was imprisoned for six
years (Curry 24). These people were accused of assisting Booth in his assassination plot. While
Powell, Herold, Atzerodt, Arnold, and O Laughlin were actually found guilty in helping Booth in his
plot, and Dr. Mudd had aided Booth s escape, Spangler and Surratt s participation in the assassination
plot or its execution was uncertain; they were tried and punished partially because they were
associated with Booth. As a result of Lincoln s death, Booth s family and acquaintances were blamed,
hated, and persecuted.

Certain models predict that drought activity is expected to increase toward the end of the 21st century
and particularly in the Colorado River Basin (MacDonald Turner, 21260). When the dam was built in
the early 20th century, annual flow was about 17.0 MAF (million acre feet) at Lees Ferry, Arizona
which is a few miles below the dam. Estimates calculating the past MAF of the Colorado River
average to about 13.8 14.6 over the last 450 years. Thus, the dam was built in a period with an
unexpectedly high MAF. Alarmingly in 2000 the river averaged less than 9 MAF. (Bolin, Seetharam,
Pompeii, 263). In 2002, the river reached a low of about 6.2 MAF (MacDonald Turner, 21256). Some
models estimate that the river could reach the range of 1.5 to 4.5 MAF in the next 30 50 years. (Bolin,
Seetharam, Pompeii, 271). The reduction of MAF in the Colorado River is due to drought. Droughts
have been occurring throughout the 20th century with droughts from 1900 1904, 1924 1936, 1953
1964, and 1988 1991. These droughts are associated with warmer regional temperatures and the level
of warming is deemed exceptional for the 21st century (MacDonald Turner, 21257). Recently the
Colorado River has experienced the lowest 5 year mean flows on record (MacDonald Turner, 21257).
If river flow is low, so is Lake Powell s water level. One study suggests that Lake Powell have a 50%

The film reminds us that slavery and its aftermath involved the emasculation physical as well as
psychological of black men, the drive for black power was usually taken to mean a call for black male
power, despite the needs of (and often with the complicity of) black women. That continues to result
in the devaluing of black female contributions to the liberation struggle and in the subordination of
black women in general. 4 The result of emasculation became hyper masculinity. This phenomenon
confined the meaning of what it meant to be black even further. For example, to be black is not to be
homosexual. This is due to the notion of homosexuality as the ultimate weakness. Hence there is often
prejudice of homosexuals in the black community. The homophobic initiative from the black Catholic
Church doesn t make the situation any better. Hence, Marlon Riggs ties in his own story as a gay black
man with AIDS. It really assists the film in showing the restrictions that exist in black unity. So what
is the black identity? Are you black enough? Do you talk black? Are you a hyper masculine
heterosexual male with kinky hair and a criminal record? I can see how it must be difficult to maintain
a sense of communal self. Angela Davis one of the speakers in the film, provides this answer: You take

Edith Budge Influence
In addition, Budge also directly influenced at least two authors. The first of these authors was Edith
Nesbit. She was the British author who wrote The Story of the Amulet (1906), a children s novel. In
the novel, a group of kids get their hands on an Ancient Egyptian amulet near the British Museum in
London. Nesbit dedicated the novel to E. A. Wallis Budge after talking with him about the book before
she wrote it. The story was clearly influenced by the concept of Egyptian magic, as well as curses, as
the children are told the amulet will grant their heart s desire. The amulet then sends them back in
time, and allows them to understand the language of ancient Egypt. This narrative is clearly influenced
by the tales of Egyptian magic Budge described. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rider Haggard, also corresponded directly with Budge. Haggard wrote King Solomon s Mines (1885),
a novel that tells of a group of adventurers searching in an unknown part of Africa for one of the
member s missing brother. The novel could be seen as having colonialist themes, due to the
uncomfortable exchanges between white and black characters. Not only that, there are also references
to curses in this novel. Though the stories were different, Sands O Connor, a British literary critic,
talks about some of their shared similarities. Both authors had interests in Egypt, but due to their lack
of knowledge, consulted the British Museum before writing their novels. According to Sands O
Connor, Nesbit and Haggard valued and trusted the opinions of Keeper Budge enough to submit
various drafts of their manuscripts to him and to be humbled by his encouragement. Thus, there was a
direct correlation between fiction authors and archeologists at the time. With that in mind, the
documents written by Budge, and his more bigoted counterparts, become even more

The Three Stages Of Behaviorism
BEHAVIORISM
Behaviorism is a type of psychology and a theory of learning. Everything we know about behaviorism
is through observation and experimentation. It is not concerned with internal thoughts like thinking,
feeling, knowing or emotions. What behaviors believe is people have no free will. A person s
environment determines their behavior Behaviorism is the idea that all behavior is the result of our
environmental surroundings. On other words, the things that happened in the environment leading up
to the behavior are what caused it. The environment provides a stimulus, and our behavior is a
response to that stimulus. It focuses on the objective and observable components of behavior

Classical conditioning is defined as a learning process where two stimuli are repeatedly paired and
eventually a response originally elicited by the just the second stimuli is elicited beforehand by the
first stimuli.
Classical conditioning theory involves learning a new behavior via the process of association. In
simple terms two stimuli are linked together to produce a new learned response in a person or animal.
There are three stages of classical conditioning. At each stage the stimuli and responses are given
special scientific terms.
Before Conditioning:
In this stage, the unconditioned stimulus produces an unconditioned response in an organism. In basic
terms, this means that a stimulus in the environment has produced a behavior / response which is
unlearned (i.e. unconditioned) and therefore is a natural response which has not been taught. In this
respect no new behavior has been learned yet.
During Conditioning:
During this stage a stimulus which produces no response (i.e. neutral) is associated with the
unconditioned stimulus at which point it now becomes known as the conditioned stimulus.

Biometric access control systems are so far the best type of access control we have today. The
reasoning for this is because it relies on identifying unique human characteristics such as fingerprints,
retinas, hands, etc. Since these characteristics are unique to each person like DNA, biometric access
control systems are considered far better than the other systems I have listed.
When it comes to access control of computer systems, many of the same types of control systems
mentioned above are also used along with passwords and encryption.
Uses of different systems
There are many ways to use the systems I have already mentioned. Almost all buildings use keys to
lock doors, but depending on the facility, they might also use smart card or proximity cards to control
access into different parts of the building. By doing this they can enhance security and effectively
control the access to different areas all through a computerized system. This allows them to easily
grant or deny access in a very short period of time or only allow access during certain times of the day.
Biometric access control systems can also be used in the same manner. Being able to control access in
this manner also allows for good tracking and logging of who comes and goes.
Components of an access control system
Components of an access control system can be a door, turnstile, gate, elevator, or any other physical
barrier where granting access

The Problem With Body Dysmorphic Disorder ( Bdd )
Concerns about one s own appearance are not uncommon. The majority of people that dislike a certain
aspect of their appearance may occasionally refer to it negatively and leave it at that, whereas
someone with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) will refer to their perceived flaws so much so that it
affects their life on a daily basis (The BDD Alliance, 2016). About 1.7% to 2.4% of the general
population is affected by BDD, meaning that about 1 in 50 people have the disorder (Phillips, n.d.).
Fortunately, there is a generous amount of information available about the history of BDD, which
includes its causes, effects, treatments, and much more. History The earliest documentation of BDD
was made by Italian psychiatrist Enrico Morselli in 1891 (Vashi, 2015). He referred to it as
dysmorphophobia , derived from the Greek word dysmorfia dys meaning abnormal and morfia
meaning shape (Phillips, 2009). In one of Morselli s papers, he described BDD as: [...] the sudden
appearance and fixation in the consciousness of the idea of one s own deformity; the individual fears
that he has become deformed [...] or might become deformed, and experiences at this thought a feeling

Deep Space Nine Episode The Visitor
I m a Star Trek nut. Always have been. Always will be. One of my favorite episodes in the entire
franchise was the Deep Space Nine episode The Visitor. Captain Benjamin Sisko is the father of a
writer an avid writer named Jake. You know the type. The storyteller who can t drop the pen or push
away the keyboard until they ve pumped out one more story or polished that last paragraph to
perfection. This episode is not about space battles, light speed or technobabble. It s about love and loss
and desperation. The episode is powerful and poignant, worthy to be seen even by folks who flee from
Trek. In the opening act, the captain is trying to pry his son away from his writing just long enough to
see an event that happens only twice a century. In doing so, Jake s father gave him some advice. He
said: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
See what s going on. It s life, Jake! You could miss it if you don t open your eyes. What a pearl of
wisdom this is. It applies to everyone, but particularly to writers. We storytellers create places, people
and events that we hope will somehow resonate with our readers. Achieving this is no small task. It
requires more than talent and skill. It requires us to live a life in balance. I ve frequently written about
that whimsical, imaginary muse of mine who pops in unannounced and refuses to memorize my
schedule, but I ve come to realize that we each have a real life muse inspiring us and feeding us
tantalizing story bits. That muse is our life experiences. When we don t take the time to poke our
heads up every once in a while and open our eyes to actually live life then our muse won t have much
material with which to work. It s often said that our stories come from within us. Experiencing life
fills our creative tanks with fuel. It s the charge that starts the engine and powers the creative

The Assyrians and Cyrus Essay
INTRODUCTION At its height, the ancient Assyrian Empire stretched from the north in the upper
Tigris river valley, south to the northern tip of the Persian Gulf including Babylon, along the
Mediterranean Sea from Tarsus to Jerusalem and all the way down into Egypt to the city of Thebes.
This vast empire took several thousand years to build. Early settlements can be traced back to the
northern city of Nineveh around 5000 B.C. The success of this nearly 2000 year empire had a lot to do
with the way the rulers divided up the empire into states with local governors; a radical idea during
that time. The advances they made in the area of science and architecture were extremely important as
well. Unfortunately, the great Assyrian ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For the most part, these common people felt that their lives improved greatly under Assyrian rule.
CONQUERORS The Assyrians were considered brutal conquerors that conducted their wars with
shocking ferocity. The leaders of these conquered cities were often interrogated, tortured, mutilated
and then finally killed. Everyone seemed to be generally frightened by the Assyrians when they saw
them on the horizon. Although their military and usurping tactics were greatly feared, they never
conquered a civilization to destroy it. They were in the business of acquiring cultures to enrich their
dynasty. They would conquer an area, secure it and start setting up local government. The government
would be responsible for re educating the subjects in their newly acquired heritage. This gave these
subjects a sense of belonging and pride. This also allowed for the greatest achievement of the Assyrian
Empire; the cultural unification of the Middle East. Not an easy task as can be seen today by the
turbulent violence and unrest. The Assyrians were very viscous to any group who revolted and tried to
fight against them. There are several horrific stories of piles of bodies being stacked and left to rot at
the front gates of the cities that dared to start a revolution. There are even some places where the skins

Steve Jobs Accomplishments
The goal is to make the best devices in the world not to be the biggest (Steve). In hind sight this quote
had a bigger impression than one would ever imagine at the time. Steve Jobs grew up in a
neighborhood that was full of Electronic Engineers which allowed for hands on, real world, training
and a glimpse into the beginning of the electronic industry. This glimpse sparked a fire in Jobs which
created an internal desire and almost frenzied drive to further educate himself in the world of
technology. The visionary, that Steve Jobs was, had almost a sixth sense when it came to technology

The Power of The Sea-Wolf Essay
The Power of The Sea Wolf
Jack London s novel, The Sea Wolf, has many different interpretations. The story can be read as a
combination of the naturalistic novel and the sentimental romance, both very popular around the turn
of the century. London also brings into play literary naturalism, in which human beings are
characterized as just another species in nature, subject to all of Her cosmic forces. The Sea Wolf fits
almost perfectly the archetypal pattern of an initiation story. Depth and interest are added to The Sea
Wolf by successfully integrating these three elements the combination of two popular genres, literary
naturalism, and the initiation story.
One of the characteristics common to most naturalistic novels is the ... Show more content on

Two elements of the naturalistic novel are present in The Sea Wolf humans fighting nature, humans
fighting one another.
Jack London also uses another popular genre of the time the romance novel. This novel is very much
about Humphrey Van Weyden and Maud Brewster falling in love. As soon as Humphrey sets eyes on
her he s entranced: She seemed to me like a being from another world; she smiled amusedly and
sweetly, as only a woman can smile (142). She was like a feather in my arms, so slender, so ethereal
(276). Humphrey knew for a long time that he was deeply in love with her, but she didn t realize that
she reciprocated the feelings until late in the novel. When she finally realized it, she smiled a most
adorable smile, whimsical as I had never seen it, for it was whimsical with love (284). This
combination of the naturalistic novel and the romance novel brings out the best sides of both and
allows for a very interesting novel.
Throughout the novel, London brings somewhat into play the ideas of literary naturalism, in which
human beings are treated as just another species. Many times, the idea is introduced of the enormity of
nature and the fact that humans are subject to all of the cosmic forces. When trying to fix up the
Ghost, Humphrey and Maud run into many problems resulting from the destructive forces of nature.
At one point, Humphrey is blown off

Bingo Research Paper
Bingo rallies on for more good causes last month Bingo was once again playing its part in the charity
fundraising process last month, with October yielding some impressive sums for good causes. Both
the Clee Hill Royal British Poppy Appeal, and a comedy bingo night for a children s charity, did their
bit to raise much needed funds, as the month passed out of sight. Over in Clee Hill, in Kidderminster,
an evening of bingo managed to raise £772.28 thanks to 100 people attending a Poppy Appeal bingo
event, in support of the Clee Hill and District Branch Royal British Legion. The annual remembrance
Sunday event will take place on November 8, and there will be more events taking place following the
service at St. Peters Church at 6.30pm. Meanwhile, over in Brentwood, the Shenfield Parish Hall s
Comedy Bingo Night turned out to be quite the success, with over £1,720 raised for the Brentwood
Children s Charity SNAP. Again, over 100 people attended the event, which features giggles and gags
from comedian, Skittleman. The Mayor of Brentwood also called one of the bingo rounds at the event,
which was pleasing to the small crowd in attendance. Skittleman and the Mayor provided free
appearances at the event, which certainly aided the amount raised. ... Show more content on

Shadow of the Night
Shadow of the Night
On a freezing, dark blue night of Li, in the Village of Li Marta. This was an old little village, the
houses were nothing but ash and rubble except an old abandoned barn. The barn had creaking floor
boards and a rotten wooden roof.
In this abandoned barn there lived a young and confident farm boy; his clothes were ragged and full of
holes. The young boy was called Rye named after the agricultural god Ren Rye.
As Rye was sitting on the creaking floor boards a thought hit him, he remembered something his
mother told him, be strong like an ox! Suddenly a gang of raiders came down from the north came to
torch the village to ashes. A horn blew. It was the raider chieftain Kai Tai s way of terrifying the
villagers. Outside the Barn two raiders were battering through the barn door, then Rye s mother said
hide, son! Hide in the rafters! from his hiding place Rye saw the doomed doors explode into a shower
of splinters and he saw his mother being dragged away.
Rye remembered those horrendous moments. In frustration he would kick a stone for no purpose or
reason. His father fought till his last breath and defending Rye, valiantly clutching his pitchfork.
Rye had woken up from that dreadful nightmare, he was now somewhere unfamiliar a dark, dark
place, where there was no light. It was the spirit realm of Gahem a quiet but deadly realm to stay in.
Suddenly out of the darkness a shadow appeared the shadow had black clothing and a dark purple

Analysis Of The Poem Pentagram
Pentagram
The simple definition of the term pentagram is a five pointed star whose arms are equal length that is
drawn with a continuous line. Throughout history, this symbol has been used by religions and has
many different meanings.
The Pentagram can be traced back to carvings on stone walls in ancient Mesopotamia, dating these
carvings leads us back to 3500 BC. Many cultures use the symbol for various things.
It is a sign of royalty, representing power sent to the four corners of the earth; it was a sign of
protection, it was the Endless Knot and was a symbol for Truth; knights painted it on their shields, a
reminder of the five virtues they were to follow; Christianity claimed it represented the five wounds of
Christ; it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For me, this means a lot. As well as teaching a young girl about the craft, often referred to as my grand
Witchling, I am guiding my partner on the path to being Wiccan. Knowing the correlation to the
horned God gives me another way to tap into those energies and helps me teach him to focus in the
divine masculine with the use of symbols.
In Modern Pagan/Wiccan practices the symbol is often used interchangeably with pentacle, though
there is a difference. The pentagram has no circle surrounding it and is composed of a single line. It
symbolizes the four quarters or directions, the four elements, the four seasons, and at the top point is
spirit, the fifth element from which all others come.
Satanists use this symbol, surrounded by a circle or not, upside down to represent their relationship
with Satan. They have taken our sacred symbol and twisted it to mean the opposite of what we think
and teach. In our modern age, with the extremes Satanists have gone to so they are noticed and make
an impact on society, the pentagram with the point down represents evil. To most, it means a covenant
with the devil and all that is unholy and against Christianity.
The Latter Day Saints use the inverted pentagram on many of their older buildings, I found this
amazing and since I live in Utah, about an hour from Salt Lake, I visited some of the older churches
and found one downtown that still had the symbol emblazoned above the

The Seminole Indian Tribe
The Seminole Indian Tribe of Florida is a renowned group in South Florida area. Besides being the
only Federal recognized tribe that has not signed a peace treaty, the Seminoles are known for things as
Chickee Architecture, Billie Swamp Safari, and the Infamous Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.
All these groundbreaking and recognized accomplishments were only cable because of the hard work
and dedication from the different tribes that make up the Seminole Nation. That being said, the
Seminoles success was also due to opening of smoke shops and high risk gaming in the 1970
s(Cattelino 5). However, with the wealth that has come, it also brings along the Fungibility of money.
This Fungibility is what enabled growth with the Seminole people. ... Show more content on

With money, one can choose their own fate to an extent, and even help shape the path for others
around them. I believe that the Seminole Indian tribe is a perfect example of this. Due to their large
success with gaming, they have become a finically independent group that can now better themselves
because of money. Things such as education, health, and preservation of cultural are now enabled due
to the gain of funds from the casinos, but these positives do come with a price. Thanks to financial
freedom, Seminole artist have pursued expanding their knowledge of skills and crafts. This new want
for cultural expansion can be seen as a positive since people can now focus on past crafts and
practices. Unfortunately, due to gaming revenue, people worked on crafts because they no longer have
to work, while others stopped crafts for the same reason. They no longer need to make money, so they
no longer saw a need in making them. This shows that economic freedom was as much as a curse as it
was a blessing. Freedom allows one to choose their own path. The Seminole tribe was able to find
freedom through gaming revenue, and it has had many positives in their tribe. However, freedom can
also make people forgetful of passion and hard work. Not to say that all Native Americans who have
benefitted from tribal funding from things such a gaming revenues are lazy. I believe that the majority
will make the best choice at the end of the day. Hopefully the money earn through gaming does not
lead to a downfall in such a respected

The Waiting Room Sociology
Have you ever heard the quote Health is not valued till sickness comes, before? Or how about To keep
the body in good health is a duty... otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear, ?
From the fact that these quotes are from Thomas Fuller and Buddha, it s clear to see that throughout
the history of the world, plenty a focus has been on the topic of health. Over the years, questions like
these have been asked: How do we keep ourselves healthy? In which ways should we keep ourselves
healthy? Is healthcare a right, or a commodity? What is health ? Even today, these questions are hotly
debated. However, as our country becomes more industrialized, and healthcare becomes more
accessible, (although often not in equal amounts), ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first article I read was titled Education, Health, and the Default American Lifestyle, was written
by John Mirowsky and Catherine E. Ross. The main idea of this article was to articulate that education
has the ability to override the default American lifestyle, which has has three elements to it: displacing
human energy with mechanical energy, displacing household food production with industrial food
production, and displacing health maintenance with with medical dependency. Overall, the paper says
that in order to get out of an unhealthy lifestyle, you need to recognize the risks, which require some
form of higher education. According to this paper though, health is being vigorous, vital, and fit .
According to the Symbolic Interactionist, that isn t what every culture would say health is. Some may
say that being a little overweight is a sign of good fortune. While the paper does make a good
argument that education is the most important influence on health, I do not think is it the overall single
most important impact. One can be educated, but can still be turned down for a job, therefore leaving
them without insurance or health care. Education isn t always the deciding factor in what you re going
to get. Race, wealth, and gender also play a very big role, arguably bigger

  • 2. Compare and contrast Ben Jonson’s ‘The Alchemist’ and... The study will encompass the compare and contrast of two great writers literary works. It will take comprehensive discussion on Ben Jonson s The Alchemist and William Shakespeare s The Tempest . Jonson and Shakespeare were contemporaries with more immediately recognizable common ground between them than difference. They shared the same profession and brought forth their works from the matrix of common intellectual property. They appealed to the same audience and both gained popularity and esteem as accomplished playwrights. At the more social level, they were both struggling artists conscious of the need for patronage and support from their wealthier and more powerful peers. Both Jonson and Shakespeare experienced the trials and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The distinction between I and him is emphasized by Jonson s assertion of an answer to Shakespeare s way of doing things. The quest for self knowledge has been integral to the structures and evolution of human society throughout history. During the early modem period, the classical maxim of nosce teipsum operated almost universally, not only as a prompt towards, but also as a goal of, both individual and communal achievement and actualization. At one level, Hamlet s tribute may be taken as an adumbration of the Renaissance engagement with the epistemological enquiries into the nature of man, and his place and function in the cosmic chain of being. What a piece of work is a man, How noble in reason, how infinite in faculty, in form and moving how express and admirable, in action how like an angel, in apprehension how like a god the beauty of the world, the paragon of animals. And yet to me what is this quintessence of dust? Jonson explicitly bases their sense of the play s similarity upon theories of comedy that imply such affirmation. In Volpone and The Alchemist, Jonson sues irony to expose how far short of the ideal is the world of the play, and thus celebrates the ideal indirectly. If the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For most of my life, spirituality was a very similar elusive quest. I was raised in religion. Catholicism. Its impact may not have meant much at the time but as my life transpired, I realized the great significance of these beginnings. And the more I explore, as we will be doing in this class, I realize I haven t even touched the tip, of the wealth, of information that exists in search of spirituality. • 4. Homer s Use Of Authority In The Iliad The word authority originated from the Latin verb augere which means to increase or promote. From the perspective of an everyday usage it has broad meanings and associations such as power to enforce obedience, or power to influence action and when we are using authority we are referring to a person or group of people who exercise that power. Moreover, authority is associated with social force and is linked to ideas of power through knowledge thus, we ought to respect it. Furthermore, authority depends on collective consent and they are the ones who give approval to authorities in order for their work to be a literary canon. It starts with But Achilles was coming closer, like Enyalius here the poet is showing us the bravery of Achilles by comparing him to the war of god and how good he is in the battlefield. He goes further on by glorifying the war and the protagonist and enhancing it by saying The bronze around him glittered like a blazing fire or rising sun. Also, Homer is eloquent in the language and that is proven by how the choice of his vocabulary, for example when he was narrating the fastness of Achilles when chasing Hector Pelus son went after him, sure of his speed on foot. Just as a mountain falcon, the fastest creature of all the ones which fly, swoops down easily on a trembling pigeon as it darts off in fear, the hawk speeding after it with piercing cries here, he is comparing the speed of Achilles with the fastest bird and it is also an extended simile and he is trying to show us both the speed and power of the hero and how he wants to devour its victory. These are just few examples of the similes the poet used but we can see that he has in depth knowledge of the event and time is not a limited factor since he is able to narrate the past, current and events that may happen in the future, he also knows what the Gods are discussing regards to human affairs. Throughout The Screwtape Letters, Screwtape consistently reiterates his idea that the gradual road to hell is the safest . Because Screwtape places so much emphasis on the gradual road, one must stop and consider it closely. This gives us three questions that we should consider: What is the gradual road to hell? How does Satan use it? How can the Christian be on guard? The gradual road to hell is the small sins that can separate someone from God without the person even noticing they are drifting away. While many people may believe that the quickest ways into hell are big sins like murder, rape, and stealing, Screwtape seems to think the contrary. He ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Murder is no better than cards if cards can do the trick (60 61). In reality, no sin is greater than another. Satan understands that, though we often do not, and will use that to his advantage. Satan uses the gradual road to hell to enslave the victim often without the victim knowing what is happening. If the Christian knew he was on the steep road down, he would surely notice and turn around. As Screwtape says: As long as he retains externally the habits of a Christian he can still be made to think of himself as one who has adopted a few new friends and amusements but whose spiritual state is much the same as it was three weeks ago. • 7. Role Of Investment And Commercial Banks Play On The Global... Introduction: This paper will examine the roles that investment and commercial banks play in creating and predicting systemic risk in the global economy. This topic is of particular relevance due to the events that unfolded in the economic sphere nearly a decade ago during the financial crisis of 2007 2008. Our study will provide a detailed rendering of the crisis, outlining each of the key factors that contributed to the crash in an attempt to gain a better understanding of what happened and how to avoid similar events from unfolding in the future. Much of our study hinges on the role of banks on the markets and their influence over global systemic risk. In order to establish a link between bank prices and economic trends, we will focus our analysis on one key metric, Value at Risk (VaR). A powerful statistical measurement, VaR is used to assess a firm s potential loss over a certain period of time. To generate a diversified and complete quantitative analysis, our calculation will incorporate pricing data from January 1st, 2000 to November 30th, 2016 of eleven of the most prevalent banks in the US financial system: Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Barclays, Citi Bank, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, HSBC, JP Morgan, Royal Bank of Canada, UBS, and Wells Fargo. Our aim is to establish a predictive correlation between the historical performance of these banks and the markets in order to avoid downturns such as the financial crisis of 2007 08 from happening in the ... Hispanic Immigration And The United States Hispanic immigration to the United States stems primarily from uniquely developed push pull migration mechanisms in which interplay of national, regional, and global economic developments, the history of U.S. military and foreign policy in the Western Hemisphere, the checkered history of international border enforcement and interdiction efforts, and, not least, the aspirations of Latin American migrants and potential migrants themselves (Gutierrez). In other words, migration from Latin American to the United States shouldn t have been consistent, however, there are several factors that triggered massive waves of such. The first major wave of Hispanic migration to the United States was in 1848, which was a result from the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. This is a type of walking exercise where you walk at a steady pace and then like interval training, do short bursts of aerobic activity combined with periods of rest and recovery. For example, if you are planning to do brisk walking for 30 minutes, you can speed up the pace by jogging for about two to three minutes every five minute intervals. • 11. The Origins Of Christianity And Christianity Christianity is one of the most common religions of the world and was founded in the early stages of time as we know it. Christianity was formed by the power of one man, Jesus Christ, whose life was unexplainably different from anyone else s of his time. The influences of his character, beliefs, customs, and teachings, are the foundation of the religion today. Throughout time and as more knowledge was gained and received, the customs of the religion changed and new smaller groups broke free from tradition and formed themselves into their own organizations. Every event that happened shaped the religion, but the messiah or better known as the Son of God, played the most important role. Jesus Christ born circa 6 B.C in Bethlehem which is the south city of Jerusalem was born of Virgin Mary and Joseph, but as the author states, Christians have believed that Jesus was born in Bethlehem. The details are fully explained in the rabbinic interpretation which is provided in the Old Testament. (Fisher, 2014, 305) There is very little written about Jesus s early life. But what is said in The Gospel of Luke (2:41 52) conveys that when Jesus was 12 years old, he had accompanied his parents on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and they became disunited. After a few days, he was found in a temple conversing affairs with some of Jerusalem s elders. • 13. Impact Of Technology On Business Techniques 1. Introduction The analyzation of data or the observation of information has never been an uncommon occurrence; these analyses have grown exponentially since the rise of technology in the 21st century. The results produced through big data analysis have the potential to be paradigm altering; the implications run much deeper than simply connecting x to y. Although its foundations have been interwoven into society, big data has only recently become a commonly known term. Still, very few are well versed in the subject. What exactly is big data? Danah Boyd and Kate Crawford put it in the simplest terms when they define it as, very large data sets and the tools and procedures used to manipulate and analyze them (Boyd and Crawford). This manipulation is vital to many large corporations as they attempt to harness the data in order to personalize the consumer experience in their business techniques. Since its inception, big data has warranted a moral investigation: ethicists have been scrambling to determine how this alien method of marketing should be dealt with. There have been the supporters of big data use, while there have also been those who disapprove, vehemently denouncing even the idea of such a thing. In this paper, big data will be described exactly, including the way it is projected to affect the marketing world, and how utilitarianism should be applied to the moral dilemma in order to reach a satisfactory resolution on the topic. 2. Assignment #1: Policy and Implications Paper Mary Marrone USC School of Social Work January 29, 2016 Section One: Choose and Research a Policy Introduction At the president s inaugural, the 2010 National Drug Control Strategy presented an evidence based practice that addressed reducing drug use and eliminating its consequences in the United States (National Drug Control Strategy, 2013). The president responded by having his administration draft the third way in drug policy, which rejects taking extreme measures on drug addicts and in criminalizing them, also minimizing the United States participation in the war on drugs (National Drug Control Strategy, 2013). This policy hopes to take a nuance approach on drug policy as it aims to balance public health programs, effective law enforcement, and international partnerships. After all we are in the twenty first century, where forward thinking is highly commendable and very much needed. The third way is rooted in the belief that drug addiction is a disease and causes grave damage to the brain (National Drug Control Strategy, 2013). Therefore it is true that one can seek treatment in hopes of recovery for his/her disease or one has the ability to completely prevent them from acquiring the disease of addiction. This policy is believed to represent the future of drug policy not only nationally, but globally as well (National Drug Control Strategy, 2013). History/Evolution of the Policy The ... Many people still remember her famous meat dress she walked the red carpet in, while others reminisce on all the outrageous outfits she s worn over the years. Over the last nine years, this pop star diva continues to top the charts with her music, spreading kindness, and walking the streets wearing memorable outfits. • 17. The Culture Of Asian American And Being Labeled As An Ethnic Preface In this essay, I attempted to lay bare the issues of being an Asian American and being labeled as an ethnic other in modern America. This label of other causes them to become marginalized and lose their sense of identity, belonging neither to Western culture nor Eastern culture. In order help stop this loss of identity in Asian Americans, we must tear down the social construct of the other and integrate the different cultures into the melting pot of popular culture. Once we have stopped alienating different cultures, we can then have a moral society that upholds diversity and identity. The Struggles of the Other The apparent dominance of White Europeans in America results in a common set of values, beliefs, and norms that are endorsed by Whites, leading to an America whose vision is filtered through the lens of the White European perspective. This established vision and power creates the social construct of the ethnic other. As an ethnic other in America, my analysis incorporates my personal experiences and the experiences of those around me. In a nation that has a population so diverse in personal and collective identities, problems regarding morality and culture can arise. In the America of the past and present, the norm by which all are measured against is that of a heterosexual White European. This norm creates a conflict with the marginalized groups who wish to gain acceptance by and into the dominant culture, but are not allowed to do so due to their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 18. Grimm s Fairy Tales I chose to research the genre of fairy tales, specifically the ones written and told by the Grimm brothers. Fairy tales took shape in sixteenth century Italy as literature for adults. They are known to be children s stories about magical and imaginary beings in wonderful lands. They can also be described as a fabricated story, especially one intended to deceive the mind. It typically features European fantasy characters. The characters may be distinguished from other folk tales such as legends. They can also be found in oral and literary forms. The term is also used to describe something happy, also known as a fairy tale ending . The history of the fairy tale is particularly difficult to trace. I am writing this paper because I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fairy tales have always appealed to the young and old, and they play an important role in a child s life. Fairy tales play an important role in a child s life because many fairy tales have a female as the main character, or they play a very important role. The lead characters of fairy tales, perhaps because they were originally told by groups of females, are women (Neikirk, par. 9). Some of the stories with strong female roles that were written by the Grimm brothers include Cinderella , Little Snow White and Rapunzel . Cinderella was a sweet and innocent young woman who had to do what her evil stepmother and stepsisters told her to. She was strong and was eventually rewarded while her sisters are punished with blindness for their wickedness. Snow White runs away to the forest to not be killed by the Queen. Rapunzel does not fear the wicked woman that keeps her locked in the tower for all of those years. Women were the ones that did most of the story telling back then, so it makes sense that they would be the main characters. Fairy tales have never been bedtime stories; in this day and age, they have morphed into a very effective means of exercising power over women and maintaining gender inequality (Neikirk, par. 1). Women have always played important roles in society, and the fact that they play main roles in these stories empowers them even more. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 19. Communication Is A Cornerstone Of Building A Strong... Introduction Communication is a cornerstone of building a strong relationship (Robinson, 2012). Numerous studies show that marriages that do not have an effective communication between partners easily end up in divorces. Researchers have identified the habits that people have that hinder effective communication in marriages (Kusi Kusi, 2015). These habits are: avoiding the expression of honest feelings and opinions about issues; failing to listen to a partner and being quick to react to the partner s comments on issues; being subjective in a dialogue; failing to allow a partner adequate time to respond to one s questions; and using negative impolite language that seem to order a partner rather than request a partner (Kusi Kusi, 2015). These habits and much hinder effective communication in marriages, which often lead to divorces. Topic Problem Many people believe that infidelity is the major cause of divorces in relationships. However, this is not the case. The main cause of failure in a relationship is the lack of proper communication. Infidelity, trust issues, different expectations, addictions, responsibilities, money issues, narcissism, and different priorities are simply the underlying factors that cause a deterioration in communication among couples (Wright, 2000). Consequently, poor communication, which is triggered by the underlying factors, is the basic cause of break ups (Chapman, 2013). The Female Body By Margaret Atwood Existence of Serving and Survival in The Female Body by Margaret Atwood Even though humans all have the same label, preferential treatment resides with the males. This is especially true in The Female Body by Margaret Atwood. Considering the society s perception of how interaction between races and genders should be, white males are at the top of the social hierarchy. In this hierarchy, the white are above the coloured and the men are above the females. Hence, women are given selective and limiting freedom and yet men are also limited by society to the point that most men do not realise they have limitations placed upon them. Nevertheless men and women do not live their lives, they survive and yet men seem to enjoy life. Therefore women are marionettes, men are puppets and society is the puppeteer. There s a wide range (38) of marionettes and to the men in society; they must have one. A wife that men will select from many; like selecting an item from the vast versions of the same product. Women are a commodity that all men eligible for marriage will receive. Hence, women are degraded to as if it were flesh and blood (38); they are not even considered as humans, but a topic (38) that has the appearance of a human. Feminists have argued for other things to be included such as social divisions to show how they intersect with class. Economic inequalities can have an impact on class as they can determine a person s status, wealth, income and lifestyle. Class is important as social inequalities exists amongst the rich and poor. Important social factors include poverty, health and education. A person s identity is just as important as their class. People may face discrimination due to their identity, whether that may be due to their gender, age, ethnicity or disability. That continues to result in the devaluing of black female contributions to the liberation struggle and in the subordination of black women in general. 4 The result of emasculation became hyper masculinity. This phenomenon confined the meaning of what it meant to be black even further. For example, to be black is not to be homosexual. This is due to the notion of homosexuality as the ultimate weakness. Hence there is often prejudice of homosexuals in the black community. The homophobic initiative from the black Catholic Church doesn t make the situation any better. The novel could be seen as having colonialist themes, due to the uncomfortable exchanges between white and black characters. Not only that, there are also references to curses in this novel. Though the stories were different, Sands O Connor, a British literary critic, talks about some of their shared similarities. Both authors had interests in Egypt, but due to their lack of knowledge, consulted the British Museum before writing their novels. According to Sands O Connor, Nesbit and Haggard valued and trusted the opinions of Keeper Budge enough to submit various drafts of their manuscripts to him and to be humbled by his encouragement. Thus, there was a direct correlation between fiction authors and archeologists at the time. With that in mind, the documents written by Budge, and his more bigoted counterparts, become even more ... It is not concerned with internal thoughts like thinking, feeling, knowing or emotions. What behaviors believe is people have no free will. A person s environment determines their behavior Behaviorism is the idea that all behavior is the result of our environmental surroundings. On other words, the things that happened in the environment leading up to the behavior are what caused it. The environment provides a stimulus, and our behavior is a response to that stimulus. There are three stages of classical conditioning. At each stage the stimuli and responses are given special scientific terms. Before Conditioning: In this stage, the unconditioned stimulus produces an unconditioned response in an organism. In basic terms, this means that a stimulus in the environment has produced a behavior / response which is unlearned (i.e. unconditioned) and therefore is a natural response which has not been taught. In this respect no new behavior has been learned yet. The reasoning for this is because it relies on identifying unique human characteristics such as fingerprints, retinas, hands, etc. Since these characteristics are unique to each person like DNA, biometric access control systems are considered far better than the other systems I have listed. When it comes to access control of computer systems, many of the same types of control systems mentioned above are also used along with passwords and encryption. Uses of different systems There are many ways to use the systems I have already mentioned. Almost all buildings use keys to lock doors, but depending on the facility, they might also use smart card or proximity cards to control access into different parts of the building. By doing this they can enhance security and effectively control the access to different areas all through a computerized system. This allows them to easily grant or deny access in a very short period of time or only allow access during certain times of the day. Biometric access control systems can also be used in the same manner. Being able to control access in this manner also allows for good tracking and logging of who comes and goes. Components of an access control system Components of an access control system can be a door, turnstile, gate, elevator, or any other physical barrier where granting access ... • 40. The Problem With Body Dysmorphic Disorder ( Bdd ) Concerns about one s own appearance are not uncommon. The majority of people that dislike a certain aspect of their appearance may occasionally refer to it negatively and leave it at that, whereas someone with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) will refer to their perceived flaws so much so that it affects their life on a daily basis (The BDD Alliance, 2016). About 1.7% to 2.4% of the general population is affected by BDD, meaning that about 1 in 50 people have the disorder (Phillips, n.d.). Fortunately, there is a generous amount of information available about the history of BDD, which includes its causes, effects, treatments, and much more. History The earliest documentation of BDD was made by Italian psychiatrist Enrico Morselli in 1891 (Vashi, 2015). He referred to it as dysmorphophobia , derived from the Greek word dysmorfia dys meaning abnormal and morfia meaning shape (Phillips, 2009). In one of Morselli s papers, he described BDD as: [...] the sudden appearance and fixation in the consciousness of the idea of one s own deformity; the individual fears that he has become deformed [...] or might become deformed, and experiences at this thought a feeling of an inexpressible disaster. ( History of Body Dysmorphic Disorder , n.d.) While a lot has changed during the century since Morselli documented BDD, the specifics of the disorder have remained relatively the same. This vast empire took several thousand years to build. Early settlements can be traced back to the northern city of Nineveh around 5000 B.C. The success of this nearly 2000 year empire had a lot to do with the way the rulers divided up the empire into states with local governors; a radical idea during that time. Although their military and usurping tactics were greatly feared, they never conquered a civilization to destroy it. They were in the business of acquiring cultures to enrich their dynasty. They would conquer an area, secure it and start setting up local government. The government would be responsible for re educating the subjects in their newly acquired heritage. This gave these subjects a sense of belonging and pride. This also allowed for the greatest achievement of the Assyrian Empire; the cultural unification of the Middle East. As soon as Humphrey sets eyes on her he s entranced: She seemed to me like a being from another world; she smiled amusedly and sweetly, as only a woman can smile (142). She was like a feather in my arms, so slender, so ethereal (276). Humphrey knew for a long time that he was deeply in love with her, but she didn t realize that she reciprocated the feelings until late in the novel. When she finally realized it, she smiled a most adorable smile, whimsical as I had never seen it, for it was whimsical with love (284). This combination of the naturalistic novel and the romance novel brings out the best sides of both and allows for a very interesting novel. Throughout the novel, London brings somewhat into play the ideas of literary naturalism, in which human beings are treated as just another species. It is a sign of royalty, representing power sent to the four corners of the earth; it was a sign of protection, it was the Endless Knot and was a symbol for Truth; knights painted it on their shields, a reminder of the five virtues they were to follow; Christianity claimed it represented the five wounds of Christ; it ... In Modern Pagan/Wiccan practices the symbol is often used interchangeably with pentacle, though there is a difference. The pentagram has no circle surrounding it and is composed of a single line. It symbolizes the four quarters or directions, the four elements, the four seasons, and at the top point is spirit, the fifth element from which all others come. Satanists use this symbol, surrounded by a circle or not, upside down to represent their relationship with Satan. They have taken our sacred symbol and twisted it to mean the opposite of what we think and teach. In our modern age, with the extremes Satanists have gone to so they are noticed and make an impact on society, the pentagram with the point down represents evil. Things such as education, health, and preservation of cultural are now enabled due to the gain of funds from the casinos, but these positives do come with a price. Thanks to financial freedom, Seminole artist have pursued expanding their knowledge of skills and crafts.
