Appendicitis is the most common cause of abdominal pain requiring surgery in patients under age 60. In older patients over age 60, biliary diseases and intestinal obstructions are more common surgical causes of abdominal pain. The location, characteristics, and progression of abdominal pain can provide clues to diagnose the underlying cause and determine appropriate treatment. A thorough history, physical exam, and testing are important for correctly diagnosing acute abdominal pain.
