Burning fossil fuels releases sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere. These gases react with water and oxygen in the air to form acids, which fall to earth as acid rain. Acid rain harms forests and lakes by making the water and soil too acidic for many plants and aquatic animals to survive. We can reduce acid rain by switching to cleaner energy sources like natural gas, removing sulfur from coal before burning it, and installing catalytic converters in vehicles.
