Approach to Studying
A Few Notes on Learning
Preference
• Defined as a unique orientation to receiving and
cataloguing information.
• Learning preferences can change depending on the
class and subject.
• Learning preferences include environment.
• Three major learning preference groups:
Visual
Audio
Kinesthetic
Why is learning preference
important?
• Preventing the “I am not good at__________” myth.
• Learning Style is adaptable.
• Each learning preference includes study strategies.
• Learning style and Teaching Style will almost always be
different.
• Learning preference can help you to chose a field of study!

Cornell College Academic Support
Communicating Your Need
•Communication can be verbal or written.
•Ask for help Early, Often, and Now.
•Ask clarifying questions during and after class.
•Attend the office hours of your professor
•Know where to go to get the help that you
need…then ask for it.
Bad Example:
I dropped the ATMO class and
math i have no idea,Ii might
take it at home over the
summer but not sure yet. Also i
been trying to get into american
sigh language since even before
i started the school. Also will
there be any open classes in
july? because if there isn't any
I'm at 6 credits which doesn't
even make me full time student
which also mean i could not be
in my sorority. I just really don
know what to do and I'm
undecided so i cant start taking
other kind of classes besides GE
classes.
thank you
Good Example:
Dear Susan,
Is NSC 170C1 a Tier 1 Natural
Sciences course?
Thank you,
Wilma Wildcat
