A hand abscess is a bacterial infection under the skin of the hand, usually caused by injury that introduces bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus. Signs of a hand abscess include a painful, swollen area of hardened or firm skin that is warm and red with visible pus buildup, and possibly a fever. The standard treatment is incision and drainage of the abscess by a doctor to remove pus and any foreign objects, along with antibiotics to treat the infection.

Hand abcess

4. A hand abscess is an accumulation of pus
affecting the hand, usually caused by a bacterial
infection. Abscesses in the hands are fairly
common and usually result from injury.
Such an infection may occur after the skin is
ripped or the hand is punctured by something
sharp.

5. • Causative organisms :
Staphylococcus is the most common bacterial
cause of skin abscesses. A skin abscess can be
the result of a bacterial infection that occurs
when Staphylococcus aureus bacteria enter the
body through a hair follicle or through a wound
or injury that has punctured or broken the skin

6. • Signs of an abcess :
• a smooth swelling under your skin that can feel
hard or firm.
• pain and tenderness in the affected area.
• warmth and redness in the affected area.
• a visible build-up of white or yellow pus under
the skin in the affected area.
• a high temperature (fever)
• chills.

7. • Treatment :
• Incision & drainage :
• The standard treatment for an uncomplicated
skin or soft tissue abscess is opening and
draining
• The abscess should be inspected to identify if
foreign objects are a cause, which may require
their removal. If foreign objects are not the
cause, incising and draining the abscess is
standard treatment.
• Antibiotics
