Editor's Notes
I’ll tidy it up when I know who’s doing what!!! To add Sarah/Wendy details if the partner event gets postponed until next week.
I will make sure that the VC computer has Google Chrome on it for the day of presentation. Have a separate Chrome window open with this Prezi ready to present.
FAQs list all the IT and Library Support you may need. The ‘Electronic Resources’ topic has lots of useful information about Summon.
Metflix is a series of online support videos on topics, such as Summon, ebooks, e-journals, etc.
Simple search for resource discovery or use Advanced Search for specific title/author
Strip back your search to the basics, such as a few words from the title or the author’s name.
To get students to experiment. Make sure that they know that they can access the library catalogue through here now.
Summon brings together millions of records from different providers which might not all work to the same standard, so there are different ways you can access a journal article after clicking on the link in Summon. It will either…
1. Take you to a brief ‘citation only’ record with a PDF or HTML full text icon that you click on to view the article in its entirety.
2. Take you directly to article – (best outcome!)
3. Use ‘link screen’ as above, to find it manually using the information they have on the screen.
4. If you still can’t find the article, try looking for it via Journal A-Z.
5. Contact us if all the above fails!
‘Link screen’ is a gateway for journals that don’t have a direct link or access to the actual article. The Link Screen takes you one step closer to the content..
The link to the e-journal article is Plan A.
The link to the publisher site is Plan B.
We’re looking at an MyLibrary eBook. Other eBooks can be viewed from Dawsonera or EBSCO – although they look different, the structure & tools are basically the same. If students have any problems accessing or viewing them, please feedback us via our help/feedback button on e-library home page.
Some eBooks can be downloaded for a limited period of time. For more about downloading books, follow instructions as provided onscreen.
Alphabetical and subject index of Cardiff Met’s e-journals
In contrast to Summon searching everything, ejournal A-Z is there to help you find SPECIFIC ejournal titles e.g. to check if Cardiff Met subscribes to a ejournal in a bibliography.
If a link to full text is broken in Summon, then use the E-journal A-Z to find an article.
Browse by letter, or search title and subject
On the results page, find the journal you are looking for.
We hold some e-journals in more than one place: check the coverage dates beside each link, and find one with access that suits your requirements.
Click your chosen link. You will be taken to an external website where you can browse issues of the journal and download or print articles.
Alphabetical and subject index of Cardiff Met’s databases
In contrast to Summon searching everything, Database A-Z is there to help you find SPECIFIC databases relevant to your subject
Can search by type of resource (ebooks, Ejournals) or name or subject (business)
Results have symbols for full text, EndNote, etc.
Some databases need individual registration to offer features. Need to re-register. If have to choose Cardiff Met as institution, go for the full name one.
We’re not going to spend time going through these today. We will provide an additional session which will explore these resources in more detail: you can contact us and let us know of a suitable time for this.
