2. Academic Web Resources
A web resource is any identifiable resource (digital, physical, or abstract) present on or
connected to the World Wide Web. Resources are identified by Uniform Resource Identifiers
(URIs). Academic resources are any extracurricular support for our academic work. Therefore,
academic web resources are the resources that helps us academically.
Higher education system has grown exponentially in the last few decades and e-resources have
become an inseparable part of this educational system. E-resources have a prominent role in
supporting higher education and in fulfilling educational objectives. Digitalized,
technologically enhanced teaching and learning is becoming a norm in Education. Students are
living in a world that has been effectively digitalized, and the digitally native culture has been
crossed over into the world of education.
E-resources are rich source of information for those students who want extra learning materials
in addition to their regular classroom activities. There are a number of e-books, reference
books, e-journals, inter-linked hypertext documents, online help centres, expert’s views and
other study-oriented material that can make the learning process very easy. The use of e-
resources in higher education lends itself to more student-centred learning settings.
Technology is evolving so rapidly, it’s difficult to keep up with what’s new, and to find new
technologies that can be included in the classroom. Wikis, Blogs and social media groups
provide a place where students and teachers can interact and collaborate on research,
assessment work and study. It seems every day; someone else is coming out with a new
innovation that can be incorporated into education, either for teaching or for learning purposes.

• Very useful for academic and research purposes as it gives a variety of materials.
Demerits of Academic web resources
• Lot of wrong information
• Some people are getting addicted to internet
• It may be difficult to researches to locate, especially if there are many similar site.
• There is no opportunity to ask questions.
• It may lead to illegal copying and reproduction of academic materials.

3. E-journals
The word journal is derived from the Anglo- French word Jurnal, was first used in 15th century.
A journal is a periodical dealing especially with matters of current interest. Journals that are
available in an electronic format are known as e-journals. An e-journal is “A journal for which
the full end product is available on optical disc, over a network or in any other electronic form.”
Electronic journals, also known as ejournals, e-journals, Online Journals, Electronic Journals,
Electronic Periodicals, Virtual Journals and Digital Serials and electronic serials. They are
scholarly journals or intellectual magazines that can be accessed via electronic transmission.
They are a specialized form of electronic document published on the Web. Some electronic
journals are online only journals; some are online versions of printed journals, and some consist
of the online equivalent of a printed journal, but with additional online-only (sometimes video
and interactive media) material.
E-journals is a periodical publication which is published in electronic format, usually on the
Internet. It consists of full-text and bibliographic databases. Full-text databases contain the
whole content of an article such as citation information, text, illustration, diagrams and tables.
Bibliographic databases only contain citation information of an article, such as author’s name,
journal title, publication date and page numbers. An e-database is an organized collection of
information. Therefore, an e-database is extremely useful to find out the articles on particular
topics. Electronic journals can be accessed via internet from any web enabled PC. Depending
on the type of subscription, one or more users can access the service simultaneously, either
directly from an independent web enabled PC or in a local area network through a proxy server
(IP addresses-based access). Electronic journals also offer benefit of full text searching and
downloading of articles. Many publishers of electronic journals offer their journals through
consortia of libraries at much lower rates. INDEST and INFLIBNET are two such consortia
operating in India. Access to articles in electronic journals can also be made through aggregator
services which offer searchable databases of contents of e-journals from several publishers,
and links to journal site for full text. Emerald, OCLC and J-Gate are some of the example of e-
journal aggregator services. The main disadvantage of electronic journal is that libraries cannot
physically possess the journals.
Some e-journals are free of cost while most commercial journals are subscription-based, and/or
allow pay-per-view access. Many universities subscribe in bulk to packages of electronic
journals, so as to provide access to them to their students and faculty. It is generally also
possible for individuals to purchase an annual subscription to a journal from the original
publisher. An increasing number of e-journals are available as open access journals, requiring
no subscription and offering free full-text articles and reviews to all. Most electronic journals
are published in HTML and/or PDF formats. E-Journals can be accessed online or in the form
of a CD.

The e-journals can be accessed in three ways:

❖ From the library - Certain databases offer e-journals as one of the e-resources to the
library. They can be open access or subscribed.

of cost.
They have the purpose of providing material for academic research and study, and they are
formatted almost like journal articles in traditional printed journals. Many electronic journals
are listed in directories such as the Directory of Open Access Journals, and the articles indexed
in bibliographic databases and search engines for the academic discipline concerned. E-
journals have given researchers an unprecedented level and convenience of access to
knowledge in scholarly articles. Using e-journals can save you lots of time as you do not have
to visit multiple libraries, and you may be able to access articles from home, work etc.

Intute -Intute is a multidisciplinary resource providing links to quality websites
evaluated by subject experts. When browsing a subject area or looking at search results,
it is possible to filter by resource type, which includes full text journals.
British Library - a directory of freely available e-journal collections
Oxford University e-Journals
Fulltext Database - a database that is comprised of several books, articles, journals,
magazines, newspapers and other textual documents.

Online Dictionary
Dictionary is a reference source in print or electronic form. Containing words usually
alphabetically arranged. Information about their forms, pronunciations, functions, etymologies,
meanings and syntactical and idiomatic uses. Age of the internet brought online dictionaries to
the desktop and to the smart phones. Online dictionary is dictionary that is accessible via the
internet through a web browser. Online dictionary is a comprehensive resource for everything
related to words. Some online dictionaries are organized as lists of words, similar to a glossary,
while others offer search features, reverse lookups, and additional language tools and content
such as verb conjugations, grammar references, and discussion forums.

There are several types of online dictionary, including:
• Aggregator sites, which give access to data licensed from various reference publishers.
They typically offer monolingual and bilingual dictionaries, one or more thesauruses,
and technical or specialized dictionaries. (e.g., TheFreeDictionary.com,
Dictionary.com, Kotobank, and Goo Dictionary)
• 'Premium' dictionaries available on subscription (e.g., Oxford English Dictionary,
van Dale, and Kenkyusha Online Dictionary)
• Dictionaries from a single publisher, free to the user and supported by advertising
(e.g., Collins Online Dictionary, Duden Online, Larousse bilingual dictionaries, the
Macmillan English Dictionary, and the Merriam-Webster Learner's Dictionary)
• Dictionaries available free from non-commercial publishers (often institutions with
government funding), such as the Algemeen Nederlands Woordenboek (ANW), and
Den Danske Ordbog.
Online dictionaries are regularly updated, keeping abreast of language change. Many have
additional content, such as blogs and features on new words. Some are collaborative projects,
most notably Wiktionary and the Collins Online Dictionary. And some, like the Urban
Dictionary, consist of entries (sometimes self-contradictory) supplied by users. Many
dictionaries for special purposes, especially for professional and trade terminology, and
regional dialects and language variations, are published on the websites of organizations and
individual authors. Although they may often be presented in list form without a search function,
because of the way in which the information is stored and transmitted, they are nevertheless
electronic dictionaries.
