3. WHAT IS IT?
Treating (anyone/anything) with
cruelty or violence, especially
regularly or repeatedly.

4. In this presentation we will focus on the
following types of abuse:
• EMOTIONAL ABUSE
• SEXUAL ABUSE
• PHYSICAL ABUSE

5. Ask yourself the following questions:
 Does anyone make fun of you or
put you down in front of others?
 Do they tease you, use sarcasm as
a way to put you down or degrade
you?
 When you complain do they say
that “it was just a joke” and that
you are too sensitive?
 Do they tell you that your opinion
or feelings are “wrong?”
 Does anyone regularly ridicule,
dismiss, disregard your opinions,
thoughts, suggestions, and
feelings?

6. If you answered YES to any of
these questions, you are either
the one emotionally abusing
others or the person being
emotionally abused!!!

7. So what is emotional abuse???
Emotional abuse is any kind of abuse that is emotional rather than
physical in nature. It can include anything from verbal abuse and constant
criticism to more subtle tactics, such as intimidation, manipulation, and
refusal to ever be pleased. It may not cause physical damage, but it does
cause emotional pain and scarring. It can ALSO lead to physical violence.

9. WHAT IS IT?
Sexual abuse is any sort of non-consensual
sexual contact. Sexual abuse can happen
to men or women of any age. Sexual abuse
by a partner/intimate can include
derogatory name calling, refusal to use
contraception, deliberately causing
unwanted physical pain during sex,
deliberately passing on sexual diseases or
infections and using objects, toys, or other
items (e.g. baby oil or lubricants) without
consent and to cause pain or humiliation.

instrument used during the sexual abuse
•Feelings of shame, guilt, isolation, depression
and low self-esteem
•Sexual confusion or promiscuity as a result of
not dealing with the emotions and feelings
surrounding the abuse
•Confusing rape or sexual abuse fantasies
•Eating disorders, obesity and anorexia
•Drug abuse and alcoholism
•Poor decision-making in relationships
•Difficulty with intimacy
•Self-destructive or even suicidal behaviour
Dr. Berman stresses the importance of bringing
the abuse to light and hopes victims will feel
more comfortable coming forward. She also
wants victims to know they are not alone and
help is available. But most importantly, she says,
they should know that "healing is definitely
possible."

Physical abuse is an act of another party involving contact
intended to cause feelings of physical pain, injury, or other
physical suffering or bodily harm.
