The Reign of Augustus
1) Augustus was born Gaius Octavius and became the first emperor of Rome, ending the Roman Republic.

As princeps, or first citizen, Augustus instituted social reforms, public works programs, and established the Pax Romana, during which the Western world was generally peaceful for over two centuries. However, Augustus did not solve the problem of imperial succession, establishing a system of heredity and designation that later caused instability in the third century. Roman law also contributed to integrating the empire under a common legal system.

Beginning in the eighth century B.C., Ancient Rome grew from a small town on central Italy’s Tiber River into an empire that at its peak encompassed most of continental Europe, Britain, much of western Asia, northern Africa and the Mediterranean islands.
Among the many legacies of Roman dominance are the widespread use of the Romance languages (Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Romanian) derived from Latin, the modern Western alphabet and calendar and the emergence of Christianity as a major world religion.
They then instead had a council known as the 'senate' which ruled over them. From this point on one speaks of the 'Roman Republic'.
Early Rome was governed by kings, but after only seven of them had ruled, the Romans took power over their own city and ruled themselves
The word 'Republic' itself comes from the Latin (the language of the Romans) words 'res publica' which mean 'public matters' or 'matters of state'.
The senate under the kings had only been there to advise the king. Now the senate appointed a consul, who ruled Rome like a king, but only for one year. - This was a wise idea, as like that, the consul ruled carefully and not as a tyrant, for he knew that otherwise he could be punished by the next consul, once his year was up.
Rome knew four classes of people. This division was very important to the Romans.
The lowest class were the slaves. They were owned by other people. They had no rights at all. The next class were the plebeians. They were free people. But they had little say at all.
The second highest class were the equestrians (sometimes they are called the 'knights'). Their name means the 'riders', as they were given a horse to ride if they were called to fight for Rome. To be an equestrian you had to be rich.
The highest class were the nobles of Rome. They were called 'patricians'. All the real power in Rome lay with them.
The greatest challenge the Roman Republic faced was that of the Carthaginians. Carthage was a very powerful city in North Africa which, much like Rome, controlled its own empire. The fight between the two sides was a long one and took place on land and on sea.
The most famous incident came when the great Carthaginian general Hannibal crossed the mountain chain of the Alps to the north of Italy with all his troops, including his war-elephants, and invaded Italy. Though Rome in the end won and Carthage was completely destroyed in the year 146 BC.
Rome's most famous citizen was no doubt Julius Caesar. He was a Roman politician and general who, without having any orders to do so, conquered the vast territory of the Gauls to the north of his province in France.
In the year 49 BC Caesar crossed the small river between his province and Italy, called the river Rubicon, and conquered Rome itself which he then ruled as a dictator.
His military campaigns also took him to Egypt where he met the famous Cleopatra.

- 1. Octavio Augusto The first emperor of Rome
- 2. BIOGRAPHY First emperor of the Roman Empire. He ruled between 27 B.C. and 14 AD., year of his death. He was adopted by his uncle Julius Caesar. From that moment until 27 B.C. happened to be called: Cayo Julio César Octaviano. In 27 B.C., the Senate granted to him to use the nickname of "Augusto" and consequently happened to be called Cayo Julio Caesar Augustus. He became the heir of Julius Caesar, after his death. A year later, he formed with Marco Antonio and Lepido, a military dictatorship known as the “Second Triumvirate”. With the disappearance of the Second Triumvirate, Octavian restored the principles of the Roman Republic: the government power was theoretically established in the Senate.
- 3. PERIODS Several years passed, until it was determined that the republican structure could be led by a single ruler, which gave way to a new period: “the Empire”. By law he had the “Potestas Tribunicia”, besides the appointment like “Pontifex Maximus”. These gave him, sovereign control over the civil and military administration, both in Rome and in the provinces. In his capacity as prefect of customs, he was directly involved in the appointment of members of the Senate. The public treasury (“Aerarium”) was also under his supervision. In addition, he was recognized with the title of “Princieps civium et Senatus”. He increased his security, by creating a large escort known as “Praetorian Guard” (“Cohors Praetoria”) under the command of a “Prefect of Pretorius”. Occupy the Consulate until 23 A.C. . The mandate of Augustus, began an era of relative peace known as the “Roman Pax”. It expanded the Roman Empire, celebrated a Peace agreement with the Parthian Empire. After his death in 14 A.D. the Senate, divinized him and was then worshiped by the Roman people. His achievements, are reported by the Roman people in a document known as "The Writings of Divine Augustus" which at his request, was engraved on a pair of bronze pillars. “The Writings of Divine Augustus”
- 4. BATTLE OF PHILIPPOS AND TERRITORIAL DIVISION In the year 42 A. C., the Senate recognized Julius Caesar, as a divinity of the Roman State: “Divus Iulius”. After this, Antonio and Octaviano, sent by sea 28 legions to face the armies of Brutus and Cassius, who had installed their base of power, in Greece. After two clashes in Philippos, the Caesarean army, obtained the victory and both Brutus and Casio committed suicide. Marco Antonio, used such battles to belittle Octavian, since the two contests had been decisively won, with the use of Antonio's troops. After the battle of Philippos, the triumvirs, arrived to a new territorial agreement, for the distribution of power. As there was no more public land, Octavian decided to face many Roman citizens. In the end, there were 18 roman towns, affected by the new settlements.

- 7. THE MONTH OF AUGUST The month of August, known then as “Sextilis”, for being the sixth month of the original Roman calendar, received its present name, in honor to Augusto. There is a common belief, that August has 31 days, because Augusto wanted his month, to be the same length as Julius Caesar's month (July). Sextilis, had already 31 days before the change of name, and was chosen by its length and later renamed in honor of Augusto.
