8 tips for managing conflict
Attack the issue not the person
“I believe…” states your position – “You believe…” attacks
the other person – avoid it.
Solutions not blame
It does not matter who is responsible – it matters that
solutions are found
Lose the word “BUT”:
“I see what you mean, but…” immediately tells the other
person that you don’t. Try substituting with “and”
“you should”, “you must”, “you have to” are invitations to do
the opposite.
Imperatives are out
Respect the other person’s view as you would
have them respect yours
Listen and respond
Writing out points beforehand helps keep
tempers in check and discussions on track
Write it out
Is it important? If it isn’t, let it go
Pick your battles
“on the record” keeps things honest, open and
polite
Take notes
