This document outlines the 8 step problem solving method taught in the Lean Systems Program. It begins with learning goals which are to deepen awareness of the importance of the 8 step process, apply it to work situations, experience how the A3 tool communicates the process, and apply it in the work environment. It then details each of the 8 steps which are to clarify the problem, break down the problem, set a target, analyze the root cause, develop countermeasures, see the countermeasures through, monitor the results and processes, and standardize successful processes. Examples are provided to illustrate how to apply each step. Guiding principles are also discussed such as using facts, thorough communication, and addressing the root cause not symptoms.
