The Romanesque style emerged across Europe in the 11th-12th centuries and was characterized by some shared features while also varying between regions. It spread due to religious orders constructing monasteries, pilgrimages like the Camino de Santiago, and increased Church influence. Romanesque art focused on religious themes and reflected the values of feudal society, with the Latin cross a common church design promoted by orders like Cluny and Cister.
The new bourgeois society also revolutionised the artistic tastes. Linked to the new political ideals, the art experienced a new age of development during the 19th century.
This is a lecture on Romanesque and Gothic Art to give to a college introductory survey course. It should take about an hour and a half to an hour and forty-five minutes to work through with students.

"Romanesque" can be used to cover all derivations of Roman architecture in the West, from the fall of Rome (c.450 CE) until the advent of the Gothic style around 1150. Traditionally, however, the term refers to the specific style of architecture, along with sculpture and other minor arts that appeared across France, Germany, Italy and Spain during the 11th century. Richer and more grandiose than anything witnessed during the era of Early Christian Art, the Romanesque style is characterized by a massiveness of scale, reflecting the greater social stability of the new Millennium, and the growing confidence of the Christian Church in Rome, a Church whose expansionism set in motion the Crusades to free the Holy Land from the grip of Islam. Later, the success of the Crusaders and their acquisition of Holy Relics stimulated further construction of new churches across Europe in the fully fledged Romanesque style of architecture (Norman architecture in Britain and Ireland). In turn this building program produced a huge demand for decorative religious art, including sculpture, stained glass and ecclesiastical metalwork of all types. By the 12th century certain architects and sculptors had become highly sought-after by ecclesiastical and also secular patrons.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
2. The Romanesque was an artistic predominant style in Europe during the 11th and
12th century and part of the 13th. It was not a product of an alone nationality or
region, but it arose in a gradual and almost simultaneous way in Spain, France, Italy,
Germany and in each of these countries it arose with own characteristics, though with
sufficient unit as to be considered to be the first international style.
3. It spread around the whole Europe, due to:
· Expansion of the religious orders (Cluny and Císter) that construct
monasteries. These are source of wealth and culture and urban center of the
company.
· The peregrinations (in Spain the Romanesque gets across the Camino de
Santiago).
· Increase of the influence of the Church.
·And the Crusades
4. The kings, nobles, bishops and abbots of the monasteries stimulated the
construction of the big churches and sometimes there were villagers that
were financing and constructing them. The works were realized by
specializedcraftsmen as architects, stonecutters, painters, etc. The
Romanesque art was especially a religious art, which was reflecting the
values of the new feudal society
5. The Latin cross plan is very common in the churches of the Latin
Christianity; and particularly it was developed in the monastic
churches of Cluny and Cister and in the churches called of
peregrination (Camino de Satiago).
