The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Welcome back to school!!! I know we are all excited to be here and to begin a new school year!! This year at St. Clare Walker, we will be using Kunos. These are android tablets and we have already downloaded some really cool tools for use in our school. In this presentation I am going to cover five tools that I found useful to anyone that teaches. These are already on the Kunos to make it easier for you but I hope you won’t limit your Kuno use to just these. Throughout the year, I will also be researching apps, websites, and tools to use in the classroom as well as at home for our students. I will pass along any new tools that I discover. In return, I ask that you do the same. With our whole teaching staff working together we can discover lots of apps, websites and tools for our Kunos. The best part is most are free to use in our classrooms and in our school. (2 minutes)
I am going to cover five useful tools to use on the Kuno tablets. Some may be of interest to you while some may not. At this time, I hope to cover tools that can be useful to any teacher so these are broad topic tools, not just those subject specific ones. We are striving to make these Kuno tablets useful for our school as a whole. At our department meetings, I will introduce subject specific apps, websites, and tools that can be used for your core subject (reading, math, science, history, art, music, etc.). So keep in mind these are general and cover the school as a whole and can be applied to most any subject. I am just trying to get us started with the Kunos. We need to be successful in using these devices. We will learn a lot from them and our students will soar!!! (3 minutes)
These are the technology tools we will highlight today. I will have information printouts on each tool so feel free to pick and choose what you are interested in and what you feel will be beneficial to your subject and your students. I realize we all teach different grade levels (6 to 8) and we all must meet different SOLs and curriculums, so I focused on the apps, websites, and tools that will work for all and any of us. Then I will challenge you to find your own specific tools for your subject and try them or let me know and I will try them. I am also excited to hear about tools you already use or any new ones you discover throughout the school year. Ok but for now let’s focus on these five: Knowmia, Gooru, Remind, Weebly, and images. These can be used in any classroom and with any subject. (3 minutes)
Let’s talk about Knowmia. This is an awesome website that I have already put on your Kuno home screen. This website is full of videos. These videos range from an actual lesson being taught to a class to an informational video on a subject to a how-to video. This website is so useful in and out of the classroom. Any teacher can use this for introducing a lesson or topic, or as a review for a topic, or for anything in between. These videos can be used for any student that is not understanding a subject as extra practice or a homework video to watch. The videos can be used to catch a student up that has been sick and has missed class for a day or two. You could actually record your lesson and upload it to show the student. Students who are ahead of the game can use this website to further their knowledge of a subject. For special need kids this could be used to review again what was taught in class just to emphasize the lesson once again. The videos can be individually viewed or viewed as a class on the projector. No android app is available (yet) but I will keep check on this because I am sure it is coming!! (5 minutes)
Next is Gooru. Gooru has thousands of resources. Where Knowmia was a video resource, Gooru is a resource for every type of lesson. This is an awesome website for teachers. It too is free to use. It is full of lessons, lesson plans, online classroom resources. With this tool, you can mix and match resources to suit your classroom needs and create your own learning platform for your students. Searching for information is easy. You can search by SOL or by grade level and subject. A laptop is the best way to explore this website but I used to Kuno and it worked fine. (5 minutes)
Remind is a communication app. It’s like the calls we all receive from the automated service we have through school. This is a great way to keep in touch with parents, students, coworkers, etc. It is FREE!!! It is safe. No other recipient sees any of the numbers or other information of the others receiving this call or text. It is an instant way to get a message out to your students and parents. There are also chat options available so you can receive information back. This is perfect to use as a reminder for a test, a project that is due soon, or to let students know what tomorrow’s lesson will be. I plan to use it to remind students to return books to the library and to announce any special events (book fairs, author visits). This tool can keep you in contact with your class as well as their parents. (5 minutes)
Weebly is a FREE web design app. I actually used this to make my own website in my summer class at ODU. I have provided the url on the handout for you if you are interested in looking! It was fairly easy to create. This could be created by you and used in your classes and for your classes. You could also have groups or individuals create websites for different SOLs in your subject. Your department can create a website for parents. We can link these to the SCW website…the possibilities are endless!! I am hoping to create a website specifically for our library use. It will contain information on must read books, our library schedule, special events in the library, and a student blog where students can suggest books and even give feedback on our library. There will also be a place for teachers and parents! I can list the new tech tools I am finding and keep everyone up to date on AR goals and library projects in the works. (5 minutes)
Images can add to any presentation or lesson. It is important to either use your own images that you created, or use those covered by the creative commons license. These are pictures that are approved for use but please always remember to cite your sources. There are also many editing tools out there. I have listed three but there are many more. I do not have time today to cover all of these but I do encourage you to try these. There are so many possibilities for these in the classroom. Not only does an image help visual learners, it draws in attention where words will bore a classroom of students. There are also fun options to otherwise boring lessons using these editing tools. Instead of a book report, make a movie poster introducing your book using big huge labs. There are so many variations to our “old school” lessons. Here’s a challenge to liven up your classrooms! (5 minutes)
These are just a few more apps I have installed on my own Kuno. I would encourage you to try these and other free apps to use in your classrooms, for yourself as a resource, for your gifted or special needs students, etc. The students will be so much more engaged if they are using a tablet rather than a textbook. I hope you will venture out and try some of these and other apps. I have covered five technology tools today but there are SO MANY MORE!!!! Please feel free to ask me questions about these tools, give me your feedback (positive or negative) on these tools, and let me know which ones you like and don’t like and which ones your students like or dislike. Trial and error…that’s the process I use with my own children and with teaching I think that’s what you have to do. While one thing works for a teacher it may not work for another teacher. Same goes with students…they are very diverse, they all learn differently, we must try new methods to teach and reach these students. Now you may start diving into these new tools and I will walk around and answer your questions. Have fun!!! (10 minutes)
