This presentation was given at the 11th Extended Semantic Web Conference (ESWC '14), Anissaras/Heronissou, Crete, Greece, and is related the publication of the same title.
In this paper we introduce Spartiqulation, a system that translates SPARQL queries into English text. Our aim is to allow casual end users of semantic applications with limited to no expertise in the SPARQL query language to interact with these applications in a more intuitive way. The verbalization approach exploits domain-independent template-based natural language generation techniques, as well as linguistic cues in labels and URIs.

Federated Query Formulation and Processing Through BioFed
This document describes BioFed, a system for federated query processing over large biomedical datasets. It discusses how BioFed selects relevant data sources for query subpatterns and rewrites queries into a federated form using SPARQL 1.1's SERVICE clause. Source selection is done by identifying sources that contain predicate terms and then pruning based on subject/object bindings. Queries are rewritten by grouping subpatterns with the same source and using UNION and SERVICE for patterns with multiple sources. The document concludes by mentioning an evaluation of BioFed on a federated benchmark and providing a link to demo the system.

HiBISCuS: Hypergraph-Based Source Selection for SPARQL Endpoint Federation
Efficient federated query processing is of significant importance to tame the large amount of data available on the Web of Data. Previous works have focused on generating optimized query execution plans for fast result retrieval. However, devising source selection approaches beyond triple pattern-wise source selection has not received much attention. This work presents HiBISCuS, a novel hypergraph-based source selection approach to federated SPARQL querying. Our approach can be directly combined with existing SPARQL query federation engines to achieve the same recall while querying fewer data sources. We extend three well-known SPARQL query federation engines with HiBISCus and compare our extensions with the original approaches on FedBench. Our evaluation shows that HiBISCuS can efficiently reduce the total number of sources selected without losing recall. Moreover, our approach significantly reduces the execution time of the selected engines on most of the benchmark queries.
Introduction to SPARQL
- SPARQL is a query language for retrieving and manipulating data stored in RDF format. It is similar to SQL but for RDF data.
- SPARQL queries contain prefix declarations, specify a dataset using FROM, and include a graph pattern in the WHERE clause to match triples.
- The main types of SPARQL queries are SELECT, ASK, DESCRIBE, and CONSTRUCT. SELECT returns variable bindings, ASK returns a boolean, DESCRIBE returns a description of a resource, and CONSTRUCT generates an RDF graph.

Muhammad Saleem defended his PhD thesis on efficient source selection for SPARQL endpoint query federation. The thesis addressed five main research questions: (1) how to perform join-aware source selection while ensuring complete result sets, (2) how to perform duplicate-aware source selection, (3) how to perform policy-aware source selection, (4) how to perform data distribution-aware source selection, and (5) how to design comprehensive benchmarks for federated SPARQL queries and triple stores. To provide a flexible exchange format that could be used for converting data from libraries and information services of all types, UNESCO developed the Common Communication Format (CCF). The main aim of this format was to produce a method of organising bibliographic descriptions which could be exchanged between institutions. SPARTIQULATION - Verbalizing SPARQL queries
This presentation was given at the International Workshop on Interacting with Linked Data (ILD 2012) co-located with the 9th Extended Semantic Web Conference 2012, Heraklion, and is related the publication of the same title.
Much research has been done to combine the fields of Data-bases and Natural Language Processing. While many works focus on the problem of deriving a structured query for a given natural language question, the problem of query verbalization -- translating a structured query into natural language -- is less explored. In this work we describe our approach to verbalizing SPARQL queries in order to create natural language expressions that are readable and understandable by the human day-to-day user. These expressions are helpful when having search engines that generate SPARQL queries for user-provided natural language questions or keywords. Displaying verbalizations of generated queries to a user enables the user to check whether the right question has been understood. While our approach enables verbalization of only a subset of SPARQL 1.1, this subset applies to 90% of the 209 queries in our training set. These observations are based on a corpus of SPARQL queries consisting of datasets from the QALD-1 challenge and the ILD2012 challenge.

Reference Question Data Mining
This document describes a methodology for mining reference transaction data to aid in reference, instruction, outreach, and collection development activities. Abstract: Linked Data comprises of an unprecedented volume of structured data on the Web and is adopted from an increasing number of domains. However, the varying quality of published data forms a barrier for further adoption, especially for Linked Data consumers. In this paper, we extend a previously developed methodology of Linked Data quality assessment, which is inspired by test-driven software development. Specifically, we enrich it with ontological support and different levels of result reporting and describe how the method is applied in the Natural Language Processing (NLP) area. NLP is – compared to other domains, such as biology – a late Linked Data adopter. However, it has seen a
steep rise of activity in the creation of data and ontologies. NLP data quality assessment has become an important need for NLP datasets. In our study, we analysed 11 datasets using the lemon and NIF vocabularies in 277 test cases and point out common quality issues.
Faceted search using Solr and Ontopia
This document discusses integrating faceted search capabilities from Apache Solr with structured semantic data from Ontopia. Finding a Common Language: Bringing Complex and Disparate Vocabularies Together
This case study addresses the challenges ProQuest faced in managing multilingual controlled vocabularies using multiple Word documents and authority files maintained in an Oracle database. Speakers describe how implementing a thesaurus management tool helped ProQuest simplify and standardize its business semantic management to create a common language and connect disparate information assets as well as handling large and varied vocabularies and authority files, linking new and existing editorial systems and enabling hierarchical views, and automating thesaurus management tasks.

About the Webinar
In May 2011, the Library of Congress officially launched a new modeling initiative, Bibliographic Framework Initiative, as a linked data alternative to MARC. The Library then announced in November 2012 the proposed model, called BIBFRAME. Since then, the library world is moving from mainly theorizing about the BIBFRAME model to attempts to implement practical experimentation and testing. This experimentation is iterative, and continues to shape the model so that it’s stable enough and broadly acceptable enough for adoption.
In this webinar, several institutions will share their progress in experimenting with BIBFRAME within their library system. They will discuss the existing, developing, and planned projects happening at their institutions. Challenges and opportunities in exploring and implementing BIBFRAME in their institutions will be discussed as well.
