Payroll Webinar: Understanding the 2020 W4Ascentis
As we approach a historic election in November, most experts agree: as a nation, we are at unprecedented levels of political division in this country. Given the recent activism of the executive and judicial branches of the federal government (if not the legislative), and increased levels of state and local activity as well, we in HR mostly “hunker down” and wait for the next mandate to roll out, wondering what impacts it will have on our HCM technology platforms. From minimum wage changes to enhanced EEO reporting, from gender pay equity issues making top news headlines to the question of where the Affordable Care Act will be a year from now, HR professionals need as much information as they can garner to be ready for potential change.
In this session, we’ll explore what impact pending legislation (of both the “blue” and “red” variety), recent court cases, and a possible change in control of the Presidency and/or the Senate could have on our professional lives as HR compliance officers.

How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.

6. | Employer Solutions
1. Accuracy
Improving information
accuracy and reliability are
two of the primary reasons
why organizations install a
time and attendance system.
7. | Employer Solutions
• Illegible handwriting on timesheets
• Abuses in documenting hours
• Relies on the honor system
• Often not completed until end of
pay period
• Little insight into true labor costs.
• Exact accuracy of punches
• Reduces or eliminates ‘buddy
punches’
• Capture and correction during the
pay period
• Punch data transferred in real time
• Supervisors alerted to missing
punches etc. during the pay period.
Accuracy: Handwritten versus Automated
Manual Timekeeping Automated Timekeeping
8. | Employer Solutions
2. Increased Productivity
Manual processes require collection
of timecards and re-entering the
data into your payroll solution. This
can take hours each pay period and
is prone to errors.
9. | Employer Solutions
Is This Time Well spent?
• Time spent processing each timecard
can be up to 7 minutes
• Not unusual for Payroll to spend up to
8 hours per pay period
• APA estimates 1-8% of total payroll
spent on correcting clerical errors.
10. | Employer Solutions
A thought from Stephen Hawking . . . .
“The cost to fix a data error
at the time of entry is $1.
The cost to fix it an hour
after it's been entered is
$10.
And the cost to fix it
several months later is
$100+.”
11. | Employer Solutions
3. Bottom Line Savings
•Reduce human error
•Eliminate time theft
•Monitor and reduce
overtime
•Allocate labor resources
more effectively. – leaner
with less padding staff levels
12. | Employer Solutions
4. Decrease Burden on Payroll Department
• Paper records: storage and retrieval
• Sole responsibility for payroll outcome
• Bottleneck around individual
• Greater accountability
13. | Employer Solutions
5. Stronger Corporate Culture
• Engage employees with expected technology
• Empower employees and supervisors with self-service features
• Manage employee scheduling to balance employee skill sets
• Pro-active WorkLife balance leads to greater employee satisfaction.
