Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. 2. Process
• First, I went online and found a
snap back cap template and
pasted it into adobe photoshop.
• Next, I then found a line
drawing of a dead tree then
pasted it into photoshop to use
as a basis for the tree in the
design.
• Then I colored the cap template
red so when I did the white
lines for the cap design is still
can see where the limitation
line, so I don’t overstep the
design over the limit.
3. Process
• Then I first traced the
image of the tree in the
color bright blue using
the pencil tool, so I knew
were I was in the trace.
• I then did a bush draw
over the tree to make it
look different from the
base image.
• Next, I found a line
image of a phoenix and
pasted it over to adobe
photoshop.
4. Process
• I then edited the image using
the lasso tool to select the wing
then use the vertical and
horizontal command to turn the
wings upside down then change
their position around.
• I then did the same I did with
the tree design using the pencil
tool using light blue which will
be recolored white when the cap
design color is recolored black.
• Next, I found and image of a line
drawing of a Dimond and pasted
it over to adobe photoshop.
5. Process
• After which I traced over the
reference image in the color of
bright blue with the pencil tool
which like the tree and phoenix
before will be recolored white
after the hat design has been
recolored black.
• After finishing the designs for
the logo of the hat I changed the
color of the snap back cap base
design from red to black using
the paint bucket tool.
• Then change the tree image
color from blue to white with
the paint bucket tool
6. Process
• I did the same for the
Dimond design in which I
used the paint bucket tool to
change the color from bright
blue to white.
• Finally to finish the snap back
cap design I tool the phoenix
design and used the paint
bucket tool to paint it white.
• Then I moved onto to doing
the hoodie design by finding
a hoodie base design and
pasting it over to adobe
photoshop.
7. Process
• Next, I pasted over the wolf
image I had used for my
preproduction page for the
hoodie design as I feel it
works quite well with what I
plan to do with the design.
• The I did the same for the
tomahawk design with me
making it bigger with the
scale command.
• And vice versa for the spear
design.
8. Process
• Next, I mover on doing the
base color for the hoodie which
I planed on doing as red using
the paint bucket tool to paint
over the base design.
• Then I went back to the wolf
design and took out the pupal
with the eraser tool and then
used the paint bucket tool to
paint the design gold.
• Then I went back to the
tomahawk image then deleted
it but instead replaced it with a
second spear because I feel it
fits better with the wolf design
better.
9. Process
• I also added some image
of feathers to the picture
of the spears to reference
what was originally going
to be on the hoodie
design.
• I then drew around the
base images with the
pencil tool the same color
of the wolf head until I
had the final complete
design for the hoodie.
10. Process
• To begin the t-shirt design
process I found a shirt design
based and pasted it over to
adobe photoshop.
• Then I copied over the base
character image I plan editing
to look more like a king over
to adobe photoshop.
• I then downloaded the font I
wanted to use for my shirt
design and the wrote out the
sentence it ain’t easy being
king which I might edit later
during the design process.
11. Process
• Next, I selected the whole cape
of the character and used the
hue and vibrancy setting to
change the color of the cape
from green to rose red.
• I then did the same for the shirt
base design and changed the
color from white to grey.
• Next, I selected the hair and
top pieces of the armor and
used the hue and saturation
option to turn the armor more
gold and silver, and for the hair
I used the color balance option
to change the character hair
form black to brown.
12. Process
• Next, I found and image of some chain
mail and copied it over to adobe
photoshop.
• After which I selected certain pieces of
the character clothes using the lasso
tool in which I deleted it then took the
select area over to the chain mail and
cut out the image that was in the
selected area then moving them over
to the deleted parts of the clothing
making it look like the character it
wearing chain mail and then used the
hue and saturation option to change
the leg leather guards into gold leg
guards.
• Then using the pencil tool I drew his
eyes looking away upwards and, I
drew a goatee onto his face.
13. Process
• Then I went back to the
trouser and use the hue and
saturation option to turn
the top part of the trousers
gold.
• Next, I selected the trouser
area and deleted and
replaced a small area of
them with chainmail.
• Then I moved onto doing
the crown design in which I
found a base image of a
crown and pasted it over to
adobe photoshop an used
the resize command to
shrink it down until it fit the
characters head.
14. Process
• I then found an image of an anime jewel
online and then pasted it over to adobe
photoshop and then shrunk it down with
the resize command.
• Next, I colored n the crown gold and dark
red with the paint bucket tool and then
copied and pasted the gem a few more
time then used the hue and saturation
command to change the color of the gem
and then place them onto the gem areas
of the crown base image.
• Then afterwards I deleted some more
areas of the trouser area ad replaced it
with chainmail to make the armor look
more modular and added silver trimmings
using the pencil tool to each end during
which I went back to the top layer of gems
and deleted small bits of the gems form
the far right and left to make them look
more compatible with the crown using the
lasso select tool.
15. Process
• Then finally I went back to the
text and change the font from
bittersweet to Blackadder ITC
which I feel fits the design
better although I may come
back to the design again if
something, I can do with the
text comes to me during my
production of other products.
• Next, I moved onto designing a
mug for the dwarf faction of
my game in which I first fond a
line design of a mug and pasted
it over to photoshop.
• The I did the same for a line
image of a cog.
16. Process
• Then I looked online for line images
of pickaxes as dwarf are know in
fantasy to be expert miners in
which when I found a suitable
image, I pasted it over to
photoshop.
• And vice versa for the battle axe
image.
• Then to start making the final
design I first started by selecting
one of the pickaxes using the lasso
tool and then deleting it and doing
the same for the white background
until finally I had a lone pickaxe
which would go behind the gear
similar to the orc faction flag.
17. Process
• Then after ward I would move onto
doing the axe in which I would use the
pencil tool to bolden up to line work
and then use the wand select tool to
delete the white background then I
used the flip horizontal command to
flip it to be the opposite of the pickaxe.
• Then I took both the pickaxe and the
war axe and put them behind the cog
during which I also shrunk down the
cog to allow the war axe and pickaxe to
stand out more on the symbol.
• Then I went back online and found a
line image of a flame and pasted it over
to adobe photoshop as the flame will
be representative of the forges the
dwarf use to make them tools and cog
of their symbol of their flag.
18. Process
• Then I used the wand tool to delete
the white background around the
flame drawing then I took the flame
layer and put it behind the cog,
pickaxe and war axe.
• Then I used the lasso select tool to
select the area around the smaller
flame inside the bigger flame then
deleted it then used the paint
bucket tool to fill the flame in
orange.
• After which I used the pant bucket
tool to color in the mug a dark grey
with the cog, pickaxe and war axe
being colored a lighter grey
19. Process
• To begin the news page design I wrote up a small
article on Microsoft word in which it was
mentioned what questions were asked and the
answers that were given.
• Then I copied the article over to adobe
photoshop in which I found some image from
other games and then copied them over to
adobe photoshop in which I scale three down
using the scale command which were the halo
infinite pictures and the apex legends picture
and then use the box select tool and paint
bucket tool to paint a track were the halo infinite
pictures would go when the page was scrolled
down.
• Finally I used the paint bucket tool to paint the
background dark grey then using the scale
command I shrank down the rest of the image
then I put down 6 text box for each image to
make them look like different article then I found
an image of a spy ad pasted it over to photoshop
and added a title of the news page which game
spy
