thGAP - Transgenic Human Germline Alternatives Project, presents an evening of input lectures, discussions and a performative workshop on artistic interventions for future scenarios of human genetic and inheritable modifications.
To begin our lecturers, Marc Dusseiller aka "dusjagr" and Rodrigo Martin Iglesias, will give an overview of their transdisciplinary practices, including the history of hackteria, a global network for sharing knowledge to involve artists in hands-on and Do-It-With-Others (DIWO) working with the lifesciences, and reflections on future scenarios from the 8-bit computer games of the 80ies to current real-world endeavous of genetically modifiying the human species.
We will then follow up with discussions and hands-on experiments on working with embryos, ovums, gametes, genetic materials from code to slime, in a creative and playful workshop setup, where all paticipant can collaborate on artistic interventions into the germline of a post-human future.
3. Research
I have done a lot of visual research in trying to find the right
song which took a large amount of time but to progress with
my project I needed to choose a song to plan out everything I
was going to do in the video.
After many choice changes I eventually landed on A-punk by
vampire weekend. This song felt like the perfect choice when
thinking of the possibilities of what could be in the video. The
genre had many other diverse songs in which I could take
inspiration from and start to build and create my own video. I
looked for inspiration in alternative rock and indie music
videos and my ideas started to intrigate into the style of these
other videos.
4. Planning
• Alothough its not connected to my finished product I settled on a few
songs and came up with plans for each of them. One other song I may of
picked was going to be the riddle by Nick Kershaw and the video was
very simple and it was to film what was being said in the lyrics e.g '' near
a tree by a river''. This song took a bit of my planning proccess and
shows what other options I had to make a successful music video.
• My main planning source for the A punk video was the structural
breakdown slides. Although I didn’t follow it shot for shot it presented
some of the ideas I wanted to bring to the table like the 5 second part at
the start where I have to change the scene 9 times.
• Other than this I used things I had planned out for A-punk in other
powerpoints and sculpted the main idea and style I wanted to use. I used
a few shots I had planned out but a lot of shots were improvised but I
think that outcome was better than one where ii followed a specific
continuity shot list but furthermore I agree that they will be needed in
future projects and is a much more organised way of doing it.
5. Time Management
• Like the audio project my time management needs improvement but
thinking about the actual filming, editing and final product of the project
was done very efficiently and I had time to spare when finished. It took
me a few days to film but I had enough footage for each day so I could
work on editing constantly for the last week of the project.
6. Technical Qualities – camera
The technical qualities I used while filming but I tried to film at appropriate times of
day to get my desired lighting for the shots. I included some moving shots while on my
bike whuch I thought fit well with the song. Another typr of shot I used was a walking
shot which I only used a couple of times. And my two other main shot types were the
slowly moving up and to the side which was for the flute sections on the song. And the
other being the standing still shot which fit well with a number of parts of the song and
also fit nicely with some sunsets I filmed.
The last technique I used was on one of the last shots where I move the camera side to
side in sync with the song just before the last ''AY,AY,AY'' occurs.
7. Technical Qualities – editing/post
I used a number of techniques when I was editing on premire pro. Firstly, I used a green
screen over the whole video which consisted of artificial film grain and scratches which game
the video a vintage look which is what I was aiming for with the video. This effect goes hand
in hand with the yellow retro tint which I added by mixing and focusing the colour wheel and
tints to yellow. The overall look of the video is achieved when these two elements are used
with eachother.
If I were to complete this project again I wouldve focused more on the stop motion aspect as
I feel like that would have been intresting to see and to make, in future projects I may use this
technique and try to intrigate it into my next project. One more technique I said I was going
to use was the sped up footage aspect which the actual official A-punk video uses, this would
only of worked if the whole video was using it and this would've taken extremly longer to film
as it requires a lot more footage.
8. Aesthetic Qualities
I used a green screen over the whole video which consisted of artificial film grain and
scratches which game the video a vintage look which is what I was aiming for with the
video. This effect goes hand in hand with the yellow retro tint which I added by mixing and
focusing the colour wheel and tints to yellow. The overall look of the video is achieved
when these two elements are used with eachother.
I think the yellow was the best option when choosing a tint for the video, the normal
footage wasn’t consistent in its colour grading so the largly saturated tint was a positive as
it gave the footage a great consistent look.
Setting is also an important factor when talking about aesthetic qualities as that’s the
actual thingb your trying to show, Before I started filming I knew I wanted some town/old
fashiniond town shots and York was the most easiest and nice looking place I could find
but then these shots only take up a few seconds of footage because I felt like scenic shots
represented the build up parts of the song like the flute part and I thought that other
parts will be shown with semi rural locations.
9. Audience Appeal
Im not sure I have appealed to my target audience because its no shot in thr same way the
original one shot video used by vampire weekend but it feels and looks more like indie
/ alternative rock video with the shaky footage but also still and pivoting shots. What also is
different is the style. The official A-punk video was lightly or not tinted and the shot was more
square and it also has the sped up movements whereas my video was heavily tinted rectangle
cropped and I have 1x tempo throughout my whole video.
